When I was young hanging around my cousin he always had sealed boxes in all his cars and they always pounded hard I always like the sound of a sealed box
Absolutely true info. As an example when we first started in to SPL comps, we had a Chevy Astro van with 12, 15" JL w0 each pair in a 9 cubic foot sealed box. (Suggested by JL) Went to a comp in Vegas and hit in the mid 140's. It hit low and mean setting alarms off for blocks. After that comp we went to a ported enclosure with a single MTX RFL in a Yugo and did constant 160s tuned at 63hz. The Yugo sounded like crap bur was loud, the astro van sounded clean and mean. Each box design serves a purpose. As Ive aged I tend to like sq and sealed boxes myself. But still like a well designed ported also.

been in the subwoofer game 20 years I'd consider myself very well educated with all things car audio. you did a excellent job explaining this. anyone watching pay close attention he's droppin info that most ppl do not understand and will set your audio system above other ppls systems. it's not all about power its about the correctly built box for your application. typically ported run very well in suv or a car with a back seat that goes down typically they don't perform as well in a sealed trunk environment use your time and energy building out what's best for your application that's the key not haveing a powerful sub or amp. additionally I see way to many people running CCA power and ground wires... don't do this if your serious about your system you should be running oversized high quality OFC copper wire with high quality terminals. and please stop grounding onto a painted surface it will never work correctly always bare metal then protect that connection with a sealant to prevent future issues. no matter what how big your power wire is your always limited by the smallest power or ground wire in your system. upgrade them all for optimal power flow. all these things will put you on the next lvl
I’d have to hear ported in one of your custom boxes to be convinced. From my experience the bass hits lower notes inside the car with sealed but the bass from ported hits lower notes a few feet in front of the car.
I really like a sealed enclosure with extra juice for the low end extension and quality of sound reproduction. I am willing to sacrifice SPL for sound quality and depth of reproduction. Great video as always.
I already knew the differences but you do a great job explaining! used to be all bout that SPL ported boxes for the win but recently I hate the boosted and lacking areas so I made a big sealed box for JL w6 12 v2 and mannnn this thing gets loud and low and it’s it’s SMOOTH every bad note hits the same and it’s all loud!
Hope you are running 4 of them at once if you are doing 5 cubes...sealed box volume: 1.25 cubic feet ported box volume: 1.5 cubic feet as per specs on JL's site per speaker.
@MBEnchlosures LLC one thing I was expecting you to say, sealed typically is smaller volume versus ported. That can be a real consideration at times. It's a different conversation, but I don't hear people talk much about passive radiator setups. I really really like it. You can get the tighter higher frequency response of a sealed box, and the added efficiency at lower frequency of a ported box. I've got a 10" that plays lower 20 Hz area with authority. Very musical box design.
Can you do a db test with the 8(S) in a sealed box vs a ported box. Would be a great video and we don’t get to see any videos of sealed enclosures from one of the greatest sub enclosure designers.
It really depends on the ported box every box is not the same I've heard guys using pre fab enclosures and they sound like garbage you absolutely have to have the correct volume with the correct Port area and Port velocity and you want at least 10 DB of rise and should have a decent frequency band for instance my average enclosure that I build will play down to the low 20s high teens and up to 70 to 90 HZ with 10 to 15 DB of rise
I like sealed boxes with shyt tons of power and alot of woofers over a ported box with less power and less woofers. I can feel sealed bass more and its meaner and cleaner and just is so earthquake, however, i cant ever buy the best subs cause those mega subs with like rediculous insaine xmaxx want a ported box... So im stuck with mid grade subs usually, but they good.. People hear me forever away still.. I think that clean bass note travels better than the ported even though its louder.. not sure , just seems.
I have three stereo integrity SQL 12s and ready to run them sealed in my car. I know that loading a surface always gains a little bit of output ( like facing your subs upward toward the glass and a hatchback for example). What are your favorite ways to improve the sound of a sealed install? I can either wall them directly up to where my rear seats are and seal off from trunk to eliminate the back wave or I can put the subs all the way in the back of the car and fire them into a chamber that comes all the way up to the opening and then seal that off from trunk. Iron law states that more space equal more bass and it also helps with the subs being further back from the driver's seat as it allows the wave of bass to develop further. I have seen diagrams from professionals stating there's always decibels to be gained when loading surfaces with sealed enclosures. With the subs facing each other and loading onto the boundaries and the air mass in the chamber I can't help but think it will be a significant gain over just walling them up flush against the trunk opening. Ideas, opinions, it's basically three 12s in the back of the car firing into a v shaped megaphone( with a MDF floor and ceiling on top of the three enclosures) that's mouth opens up into the listening area. I can't help but think it's going to sound good as it will take advantage of the horn loading effect like a hatchback. I don't want to slam 3K of legit power directly into my back window in a coupe lol!
How's the install? I haven't installed my si sql 12s yet. But I'm going ported first, then later this year, I'll probably buy a 3rd sub and do 3 12s seal in about 3.2cf net
This was an excellent video well explained. My question would be more for a home theater application in a small room. I have a 12x12 room. Which in your experience would perform better? My listening is split 50/50 music and movies.
MB if on a sub in a sealed box is only getting bass from the front of the cone, why do a lot of people run 4th order box? A sealed box inside a ported box doesn't make sense to me and how is a 4th order louder than just a regular sealed box? I don't understand how it works. I understand 6th order and I was just wondering what was your knowledge of the my question. Love your channel brother especially the teaching videos 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Basically, in a 4th order bandpass you're using the sealed box to change the properties of the subwoofer to make it better for the ported side. Now, imo outside of shear spl and giant walled builds, a standard ported box is gonna be better. But 4th orders definitely have great applications in certain areas.
In regards to ported vs sealed, I think it all depends on where the box will be installed. I had a ported box in the trunk of my vehicle, and it sounded nice. Yet, when I took the same setup, and moved it to the back of a Tahoe, it didn't sound as nice. Going back to the ported box in the trunk to my car, it sounded nice, yet when I would lower the back seat (acces into trunk), it would hit harder. So I guess it all depends on where you'll install the box; I guess if the box and subs have more air. But in regards to having more air, the subs and box had plenty of air in the back if my Tahoe, yet they didn't sound good. It's still all a mystery. LOL
I've only had ported boxes tuned to 33-35hz on my two kicker 12 cvr And my American bass xfls. Always ran them on my 800rms amp. People never believed me and I just tell them it's all in the box.
i got a t2 power in a sealed mdf box its like 50 or 60 kgs a fkn love it the speed and articulation is a nother level compared to ported and it doesnt shake the car so much
Me too, My problem with Porter is you hear and feel more force and air then you do bass on the inside of the car now on the outside of the car you can hear and feel the Bass but on the inside it's just air and pressure vs the sealed box you can actually hear the bass being articulated better

The info you give is really informative and since I did a search on the db G5 sub, you really got me hooked. Thanks in advance my man coming from Ontario, Canada
Lots of rms in a sealed is how I grew up. You’ll hear the difference from a cheap sub and a good sub. Country, Hip Hop, and EDM from a sealed. Not the hard thump but the warm thump. The thump that feels like it’s gonna drag you straight to hell.
I have a good question for you. I’ll be getting the Kicker Q class 12” 42CWQ142 sub in my 08 Colorado extended cab. BUT my question is if I would be okay running it in a wider flat box that would span the width of the back wall with the seats removed so I can have space to put groceries in behind the seats and still be good. Which box should I go with if I want my back seat to stay up bc I have a ported box now with two 12 inch ds 18 subs 1200 watts each also a 4500 watt amp and there not boomy with the seat up only boomy with the backseats all the way down!!! What should I do ? Pls hit me back I need to find a solution you see like your well educated on car audio.also I have stock door speakers bc my car is leased.
I got a question though g. Why do subs sound at their loudest when they’re back fired close to the trunk? I get the loudest and most physical with every box I’ve messed with like that. Even compared to downfiring towards the spare
Ik this is an old comment. But hopefully thisll be helpful. Motorforce plays a big role. A sub that can move far, but doesn't, won't get loud. The other, is that xmax is just linear excursion. You can push well past xmax, but it won't sound as good, and it'll be less efficient. DD tends to have reasonable xmax, but extremely high xmech. The DD USA line also has really fucking strong motorforce.
@@montanaplease it absolutely does. If you dont know the diameter of the port then its impossible to know what length it needs to be. Length is only half the equation. More port area = longer port with same net airspace.
A ported box do roll off after tuning. But it will still be louder then a sealed enclosure about 3/4 of an octave below tuning. A correctly designd ported box i almost always superior. In my opinion a sealed enclosure is only better when space is limited, or you want your subwoofer to play below 20Hz. It is also much easier to build and design then a ported box.
I'm having problems with my dB 300, 4ooo wats, 1 ohm.. I have Two other dB 1 ohm at 2000 wats. 1000 rms. How do I drop the two dB to a two ohm load. I keep clipping an my gain is barely on.. Could you help me out. I would be vary greatful. Many blessings..
Might sound pretty good especially in the cab. Install a couple seats in the bed with some seatbelts if needed in your state..and put some amplified marine type speakers in the bed so they know what is playing with that bass, unless ya open that cab window.. Or use the bed as a bed of speakers in an angle for each one with a sealed wood maybe cover for the bed and cut and weld an air proof slot into the cab and weld.. Kinda wish I had an El Camino to play with but these days I doubt I'd go as far as cutting the all original body work..
Whats a good dampening factor for an amp im looking at the B2 audio rage 2500.1 it has a dampening factor greater than 400 signal to noise of 95db is that a good choice of amp
TheHiimrice don’t know much technically on this... but I prefer 200 and more. We know the amplifier controls the sub and it’s ability to do so is measured in the dampening factor but the length on the wires used affects this as well so the higher the number the better
So I have a 16 cuft box with 4 separate chambers. 2 chambers are tuned to 36hz and are a slot port. The other 2 chambers are still sealed enclosures and I was wondering if I could use a round port on those 2 sealed chambers. So now they would all have there own chamber and own port. And one last question, is it okay to keep my 36hz slot ports and have the round ports on the other 2 chambers tuned to a lower number like 33 hz?
You should know if you made that super customized box eh..Or it was made like it should be to specifics for 2 different types of subwoofers...What exactly do you have that you can put a 16 cubed box in?
i have an old sony hifi system from the early 90s that uses a quasie-sixth order series tuned bandpass. I didnt know what that type of enclosure is until now. the original sony woofer rotted so now its just a cheap lanzar sub. who ever designed that back in the day must have know a thing or two about tuning enclosures.
You would be wrong. Nobody is breaking any records with sealed enclosures. However you want the highest sound quality you can definitely say that sealed is better
Use 1" birch if you want. Thicker and harder the wood is the better lol.. Also using thicker or birch you can always upgrade to a higher wattage sub if you wished that was within the same specs as the others. But if you want a little more damping and sound quality use that MDF for it if sealed or ported.. For SPl use birch.

I have always went torward sealed, but i listen to punchy fast music .. i wanna do b2 rampage’s in sealed in my 14 mustang . It would be nice to know i have the right box
Should i go with a ported or a sealed box in a trunk of a car ?
Why do you like ported over sealed if sealed can get as low and is more accurate?
The hood love hip hop what can we say
I have 4 DD 8s in my truck. Not in a sealed box or a ported box but the best sounding enclosure you can have... what kind is it?? Hint, not IB either....
Got question I get ready to run 3,18 on audiopipe 1800 what be best box
Would it be a bad idea to put two vxf 15s in a sealed ground shaker box?
All vehicles differ... that works in your car
@@M.B.Enclosures pretty much works in all sedans and coupes that I’ve fucked with.
@@M.B.Enclosures I think what really differs is sub specs. IB is the best sound, but only with the right subs. QIT or some shit
It all comes down to music choice and how you want your low end. Controlled punchy or loud and boomy.
Yeah.. i like both.. but o prefer sealed with high spl
Could u talk about xmax. I have DD3512s esp with 17-18mm xmax but they have better output compared to some subs with a greater xmax
Have you ever tried anything with a pr
MB why do you prefer ported over sealed?
Tuning a ported enclosure is tuned from the length of the port or the diameter? Any Info thanks.
Tuning a box is in the length of the port not diameter .
Longer the port the lower the tune
@@montanaplease Its both the diameter/area and length
Tuning has nothing to do with the diameter
@@montanaplease it absolutely does. If you dont know the diameter of the port then its impossible to know what length it needs to be. Length is only half the equation. More port area = longer port with same net airspace.
Clicked real quick cuz I trust a black man
A ported box do roll off after tuning.
I have 85 el Camino I’m having a box built for it with four 8” Toro fierce subs, sealed, what are your thoughts on that?
Just subbed.👍
Is there a difference between sealed and banpass?
i have an old sony hifi system from the early 90s that uses a quasie-sixth order series tuned bandpass. I didnt know what that type of enclosure is until now. the original sony woofer rotted so now its just a cheap lanzar sub.
who ever designed that back in the day must have know a thing or two about tuning enclosures.
When are you gonna start on your son's truck build? I'd like to see the journey of it if possible
Dmack434 soon ...a video or 2 at the most on that enclosure.
What do u think of Rockford Fosgate subs
T1 and up bro…the rest common issue
In my opinion ported will never "hit" as hard as sealed, just saying! Haha Kool vid well said. Keep them rolling out. Peace
You would be wrong.
Nobody is breaking any records with sealed enclosures.
However you want the highest sound quality you can definitely say that sealed is better
I have one DC level 6 18 (and I have 2 10 inch ZV6 ) Which has the capability of getting louder so I know what to put my money into.
how much rms for a under a seat for a sealed box 10s
what do you think about Skar Audio?
Kameron Hodgeswwq Budget friendly, modest-decent performance subwoofer’s. Mostly of the shelf parts.
I got one T1 12 gonna run it at 800 rms 2ohm Manuel says use 3/4 mdf can I use 1 inch instead
Use 1" birch if you want. Thicker and harder the wood is the better lol.. Also using thicker or birch you can always upgrade to a higher wattage sub if you wished that was within the same specs as the others. But if you want a little more damping and sound quality use that MDF for it if sealed or ported.. For SPl use birch.
ooooweeeee wifey was one more question away from a DV at 6 min 30 secs
What is the formula to tune a sealed section of a 4th order to lower my drop off frequency?
Jermaine Crutchfield that is sub dependent...not all subs do well in a 4th. A 4th can only play as low as the subwoofer can only its sealed section
@@M.B.Enclosures I just hooked up 1 of my new SA12V2s last night in a sealed box a little smaller than spec and it's not smashin quite like I'd like. Would getting the full 1ft³ that it asks for really make a world of difference or could it be something else?
@@nicolumens3311 I can’t answer that. Haven’t heard it.
I’m n California man how can I get one of yo boxes
Here to learn and boy am I learning
👍🏾👍🏾💥💥
Where is a school you can attend to teach this ?
What about ported vs sealed when it comes to midbass/vocals
If your midwoofer get too low hertz better ported see bigmidbass woofers 8 10 " getdown verywell so make doorpanels with ports
Good vids but your volume in all your videos are too low
Sealed box is tight bass but u fill it
