I know this is an old video but I just wanted to say thank you for sharing. I'm about to begin my junior year of college (hopefully) as a SPED major. For the past 2 years I've worked at an organization that serves both children and adults who have developmental disabilities and absolutely love it. That's what sparked my passion and desire to be in a career that serves people who have disabilities. I also really loved my field experience in a special ed classroom last year. But I'm experiencing so many doubts about this choice as well, hearing all the horror stories and many negative aspects that overwhelm teachers who go into the field. It's very daunting to think about and I don't know if I have what it takes. I appreciate the advice and encouragement you offer! I know I want to be in this field in some form or another!

I would find a school that would let you come in and volunteer with a teacher and specify Special Education if that is the field you want to go into. There is a lot of legal aspects such as a teacher cannot disclose disabilities so don't ask, no pictures, no sharing names of students and disabilities with anyone especially on social media, look up FERPA. You can ask what skills students are working on and how you can help in the classroom. I'm sure you will be able to find one that would be willing to let you help out. Also, be respectful to the teachers time and do not sit on your cell phone. Be there to truly learn and help the teacher.

So I recently decided to change careers at the age of 42 from Sales to SpEd. Thankfully, I am the product of Special Education having gone to a school for kids with Learning Disabilities when I was in Junior and Senior High School. I'm currently working as a Floating Para in Autism Support and am working while going to school for my Teaching Certificate specializing in Special Education. I'm under no illusions as to what I'm getting into, I know it's going to be emotionally challenging but I don't think I'd have it any other way. After going through something so tough anything else is going to feel like a cakewalk!

Hi!! I know this video is from a year ago, but I found you by searching for life skills teachers classrooms and you and the content on your channel are awesome! I work with special education teachers & Gen ed as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired working with students that are low vision or blind but I have my B.S. degree in elementary education. I did kindergarten for 3 months and couldn’t cut it. I’ve been a Vision Teacher for the last 4 years and I’m thinking about changing positions next year. I’m ready to get my ESE or SPED certification. I work in Florida. I have so many questions and would love to connect with you by email if possible? I’d love to keep watching your videos also to see what else you have info on. In vision there’s A LOT of paper work too, and sometimes we have to the case managers for our kids. Hearing you say you had/have 5-12 kids sounds awesome. I travel to 16 schools and currently service 28 students, so with travel time, doing vision assessments, typing up reports, IEP info and attending meetings it can get to be way to much (especially with only 7 vision teachers servicing in a HUGE district). I know this was a long post, but you have me inspired! I should also say that have fallen in love with special education, so thank you for doing what you do!
    Thank you for your time!
    Grace

There’s paperwork BY THE TON, meetings, supporting the IEP students in their classes, etc. My coworker looks so tired and stressed out by the end of the day but she’s very passionate about her work.

Hi. I’ve got a lot of questions, so please respond! What exactly do you teach in special education? Are you still teaching special ed? Is it common to hold back a student? Lastly, is your class more integrative where the students in special ed have a few classes with you then go to general classes, or are your students with you all day? I’m looking into possibly doing special ed in a public school in a low income community. What can I possibly expect? Also, what is the difference in duties between you and your assistant? Would they have a similar educational background/experience/level of degree as you? What is the percentage of clerical work vs teaching? What does praxis and certification look like? Does being a special ed teacher anywhere require any lifting or toileting? So glad I came across your channel today

I'm an ed tech whose worked in special ed for years. My parents were both special ed teachers and I enrolled in a program to get my special ed degree; however, I have become disillusioned with this field and am considering dropping out of the program. The part in particular that has me frustrated is working with an occupational therapist and speech therapist whose methodologies are insane to me. I've watched students make no progress year after year and feel as though, these specialists have been the road blocks to their progress. I am also an introverted person and don't enjoy conflict. I think if I was the teacher in this room, I would feel like I was going to war everyday. It's this collaboration or lack of collaboration that makes me want to run from this field among other things. I feel as though I'd have to consult with five people just to walk across the room. I know there are great specialists out there, but the thought of having so many confrontations fills me with such overwhelming anxiety that it's hard for me to picture enjoying the job. I have always loved the students I worked with but I don't think I could hand all the other cooks in the kitchen.

I have a huge question . Currently I’m an incoming senior and I just realized I can’t Handle pediatric nursing because I think I’ll get too attached and sad working with kids that are going to be terminally ill . And I have always had a special connection with sped students . I also help out a lot and I connect with a lot of the students easily . I wanted to know what college did you go to or what majors did you take . All the colleges I was looking at were all for nursing because I thought that’s what I was set on.

Hi, Mrs. Dorkewicz. Great vids. I'm and aspiring Special Ed Teacher. I'm hoping you can clarify something for me. My ultimate goal is to teach students with high incidence disabilities. Do I need a degree that is specific to high incidence disabilities, or will a more generalized special education degree still qualify me for this?

I am dreaming of becoming a special education teacher and what I am worried about is that my students are going to think there is something wrong with them, bc they are in the sped class. I personally think that more kids should be in sped classes, bc things are explained better in there and with care. I was never on sped, but looking back I think I should have been, bc I had some issues with focusing and not doing things on time. The way I see it sped is education but with more care put into getting to know the student. That's why I feel like there should be more teachers doing this. Instead of thinking about putting students into categories like normal and abnormal every student should be thought as an individual. Being on sped classes doesn't make student stupid. I think there are only ppl who might practice things more and who don't have as many challenges as some other students, but in the end brightness isn't like a God's gift. I think it is about practice. Anyone can learn, if they are interested enough and get the right kind of education for them.

I need advice. When I was a Freshman in high school, my biology teacher patronized me (albeit, unintentionally, I'll admit). See, the second day, she had approached me at my locker after biology class. She put her hand on my shoulder and said something like, “If you ever have any questions in class, just ask.” She said this kind of slowly actually. Question is, why did she come to me? I don’t remember making a “struggling student” impression on her; the first day, I remember nothing. The second day, I was simply working on an in-class assignment with a partner. Not to mention the times she had the Special Ed worker help me with biology assignments. The first time, when we were partnered with a classmate for an experiment, the Special ED woman came in and my teacher had her partner with me. The second time, my teacher said she was here to help me and a certain classmate-who was a total slacker in class-come up with an idea for our upcoming biology project. But the thing is, I already had a project in mind. It very well sounds like the teacher didn’t think I could think of a plan on my own, while trusting the rest of the class to. Well, just because I didn’t generally have a quick understanding (especially in science), doesn’t automatically mean l would have no project in mind. Although I know she respected my hard work and personality,, I actually question if she respected my intellect and cognition. People tend to look down on my fellows with learning disabilities (who are such pathetic bigots by the way). Now here is the _current_ problem. I reunited with the teacher outside my job (her new neighborhood), and she told me she's gonna become a Special Ed teacher this upcoming fall. I can't let that happen. You all understood now how she spoke to me in biology, making me feel belittled. That's just it: being in Special Ed can already be tough, because of the insecurities of having a learning disability and requiring accommodations. It won't help if _she's_ the teacher there. I need you guys to give me advice quick, before September comes. How do I convince her _not_ to teach Special Ed? I'm not gonna be direct and honest and tell her _she_ isn't right for it. I have to find a way to persuade her the job isn't great, so that she'll decline herself. I have to protect those poor disabled learners from her. Please....someone help me.

What state do you teach in?? One grade level with 5-10 students on your whole caseload!? That seems unheard of in Southern Cali. I’m a school psychologist and the teachers I work with have 23-28 on their caseloads. I’m at the high school level, but even when I was at the elementary school the case managers there had way more than 5-10, and they taught RSP for the whole school (1 teacher for all grade levels). Are you an SDC teacher instead of RSP? It might be important to note that RSP teachers (mild/mod) have more students while SDC mod/severe teachers have much less. But otherwise your pros and cons are great.

Switching to SPED after many years of teaching General Ed. was a very bad decision. I LOVE the kids but it’s just too much. Paperwork, forms, documentation, planning and so on. Self-Contained SPED no joke. It feels like if you mess up, which you will it’s treated as if the whole world is ending. Add no support to that and it is just not worth the stress. Also add that your the looming possibility of being sued. One bad slip up and you are done. I’m talking about slip up on paperwork and things like that. Stay in General Ed.
Don’t be like me and many others. I can say in my over 10 years of teaching this has been the biggest mistake of my career.

I feel like the curriculum the district wants the teachers to teach is not teaching to their full potential. My son is in SPED and while I feel his teachers and paras are amazing they are teaching him the same thing over and over. And instead of teaching at "his" level they are teaching what the district wants.

Can u speak on vocational training highschool I feel like it is great to prepare the kids for real life however if a kid is extremely high functioning shouldn't we prepare them for a job in their area of strengths and interests instead of putting them to go into clothing store putting tags, cleaning toilets and stuff, or shorting mail I feel like that children are limited and there is no way they can survive and support themselves with those kinds of jobs

Have you ever had to deal with gen ed teachers who didn’t wanna follow and provide the services that a student needs which are on the IEP?
I also knew a lady who had a son who likely had ADD/ODD. He had the worst 5th grade teacher. She wouldn’t let him out of class for breaks, and from there she tried getting a 504. His teacher also belittled him in class. She was just not a nice person at all she said. When he got to junior high somehow she was able to get the school to accommodate him without an IEP or 504.

Why is the 5th grade teacher still there? Belittling a student in front of his peers is a no no. Furthermore, a good teacher focuses on teaching subjects in a manner that enables even the weakest of students to understand the content. I am a TA for sped and that gen ed teacher should have allowed the student to take breaks. Did the student's parents get him checked out so this teacher could have documentation? Lastly, she should have been reported.
