The Special education program is ruining people's confidence and lives. I got put in those classes in 6th grade until 10 grade. I didn't learn anything during that time, so I eventually started acting out and getting into trouble. I got kicked out of school in the 10th grade for fighting. I few months later I started taking GED classes and It was a struggle. I remember taking a GED assessment when I started. I was on a 6th grade level and within a year, I passed my GED. 4 out of 10 high school graduates can't pass the GED. I have graduated from college since then with an associate degree and I have a great job, but I will always remember my past. All of my classmates that were in Special education with me are in jail, dead because of drugs, or working fast food. I'm the only one that truly made it and that's because of Jesus Christ and my family that never give up on me
I was also labeled "special ed" as "learning disabled" or LD. I personally think they over diagnose these things. Special education is important for those who really need it but if you put a child in special ed unnecessarily it can be EXTREMLY detrimental emotionally and educationally. I picked an easy career because I felt I could never be smart enough for the career I wanted - Nursing! I am now working on my BSN and pregnant with my first child

I grew up in special ed, and it sucks so much. The term "special ed" is demeaning. I remember in middle school I had anger management problems, and this teacher would tell me that if a kid was giving me problems, then I should just come to him instead of trying to solve it myself. Once I finally took his advice when this other special ed kid was calling me a f***ot, I went to him, and he said "what do you want me to do about it?" Sarcastically. This problem exists because special ed either gets really compassionate teachers, or teachers that are so sh** that they couldnt qualify for mainstream. Imo, there should be no E.D. program. If you are actually mentally disabled, then sure, get your own tailored class, but if you just have behavioral issues, then be in mainstream. Putting us in special ed only makes us a target for bullies and socially isolates us and makes us feel like we are trash that doesnt matter in the slightest, and it shelters mainstream studenta because they dont have to deal with us. But they will in adulthood. Theres no "special ed jobs" you cant hide us away at the boys and girls club either. It only creates a false expectation of reality for them. And as for helping our behavioral issues, how is putting us in a separated class full of other kids with behavioral issues going to help us. It only reinforces the maladaptive traits. Special ed is a garbage program. It should only exist for the mentally disabled.
I don’t have a learning disability, but I do have autism. I just wanna put my two cents in. At my high school (I’m from Delaware), we have this thing called Huddle every Wednesday, which is basically useless and wastes learning time In my case, I have two huddle leaders (whom I like), but I’m shoved into a huddle with other IEP students whom I barely know. The saddest thing is that I’m the only really high achieving student there, and one of three or four girls. Honestly schools should have 2 different special Ed classes: one for students like me who only have behavioral problems (or mild intellectual disability), and the other is for those who have severe autism/pronounced learning disabilities and integrate those with behavior-only disabilities into mainstream classes, provided they have the appropriate accommodations (such as being able to take breaks)
I was in special ed, too. That was one of the problems I had with the program. So many of the kids in there didn't have even the slightest learning disability. They had behavioral problems, and because the school board didn't want them disrupting regular ed kids, they dumped them in with us special ed kids, expecting the special ed teacher to baby sit them rather than educate them. I hated it. And it is made even worse when these kids with these behavioral issues know they're in there for that and not because they're "stupid," which creates a dynamic where they feel they are better than the students with learning disabilities. But the school districts don't want to dump money into solving the issue. So many times I would ask myself why someone was in a special ed class when it was apparent that they didn't belong there.
The real problem is the government shouldn't be running our schools. More then 30 years ago they had schools for kids with slow learning disabilities. I went to one from 3rd to 6 grade with teachers who put in a effort. In the 6th grade I had a teacher Mr. Stalton he Kept some of us after school and taught us algebra he would take us home after school. The government decided to cut expenses in education and they closed all the schools. There was no Bullies because everyone in the school had learning disabilities. It's not the teachers who are the problem it's the government. Then when I went to junior high we called it back then now middle school they threw me in a special education Class with kids with needs beyond. My teacher was horrible I hated the class. Fortunately for me I was taken out of the class In the 9th grade. I don't know how I did it being that I was far behind my grade level. It took me an extra year to graduate.
@@tarag7292 this upsets me a lot. the reason why I’m in special education and have an IEP is because I have a hearing impairment and was told that if it weren’t for that I wouldn’t even be In the program and would be with the rest of the “normal kids” and I was also told by a TEACHER during my IEP meeting that I didn’t act like your typical “sped” since I get really good grades and because i’m an honor roll student. I got upset with my sped teacher one time because he mentioned how there have been times where I forget that I have history homework and get upset when it’s the due date since I never did the homework. The reason that upset me was because I’m very responsible with my school work and I don’t allow myself to have a grade below a 90 and always do my homework (I’m a perfectionist and put a lot of pressure on myself) and the ONE time I do forget I have homework he ends up focusing so much on that and makes it seem like it’s an occasional thing when it only happened once. I also have a friend who is in the program with me and the one time she seems visibly upset her mother gets a big message by our sped teacher on how her daughter should be in counseling for “behavioral issues” when she is usually very well behaved and polite and just happened to be upset that one day. I feel that there is a lot of discrimination against students in the program, and the times you make one mistake no matter how good you behave, and how amazing you are academically, that doesn’t matter to them because at the end of the day in their eyes you’ll always be a sped and there will always be something wrong with you.
It does, it actually does but hey you can't let people label you. Everyone has they capabilities I know alot of people who suck at certain subjects and I was better at it than them. Keep your head up, I'm pretty sure you have a lot of unique talents that no one has.
Aren't you a high school drop-out? I have poor fine motor/gross skills, meaning I may can't keep my balance while riding on a bike, or can't play sports at all. I'm good at some things, but I sadly won't drive anytime soon due to my poor vision (Visual snow.)
When i was in high school i was not challenge in my special ed class, so I just skip school almost every day. Please remember do not be a prick to the student that are in special ed, we are already having a hard time because we feel like are being label.

I know how you feel I use to get pick on a lot on elementary for that yeah I suffer from learning disability a lot because of that you sometimes I would always question I didn’t ask to be like this but it’s all in the past I till this day I still suffer from learning disability I know how to read much more better now and write they're just a couple words that I can't spell or that I can’t read out loud or I can write other than that yeah I'm better much more better than i was back in elementary one advice I can give you is if if you do suffer from learning disability is I'm happy to admit that I have learning disability because I never learned to give up
i was in special ed from 2nd grade to 8th and it made me feel like killing myself but never said this to anyone not even my parents but people made fun of me and teased me and i also have a speech impediment and had anger issues they made fun of that to of course but i started trying very hard to get my grades up and worked on it i got straight As but one B and even started liking books like my favorite series is wings of fire. In freshmen year i was just in modified English and modified math and now i a sophomore still in modified English but im getting tested on in a few weeks to get out of it i've been fighting for this very hard and i think my friends and books really helped me on this and this video really inspired me so thank you very much.

These Teachers are in denial to these Students. We can't do shit. Why? The Teachers have everyone on their side, that will take up for them. While the students don't have anyone to take up for them. I was put in special ed, and its fucked with my life in so many ways. I was forced into a classroom because a lable was shoved on me me "autistic." I was an outcast and was bullied like the rest of the special ed students. It didnt help my family thought so little of me because of my autism and oh boy they sure werent secretive about it. It stunt my social skills because we were isolated from everyone all of middle and highschool. I also learnt nothing during special ed, i never got to learn fractions in math and continued to read childrens books in 9th grade. I barely passed school, i am the only special ed student who got a diploma at my school because i had to try really hard at school, unlike the others who weren't able to. I want to be a psychiatrist. Did my school help me out with college like other students? Short answer no, they never taught me how it worked. I hated myself so much because of all these things. Schools should not be treating children like this. They aren't a nucense, they aren't a mistake, They are humans just like everyone else. It's a shame we have gotten to this point, and still nothing is being done about it...
I thought I was the only one who felt this way about sped but everyone here proved me otherwise! I’m currently a senior and have been in sped pretty much my whole life. I genuinely hate it. Because while all my friends are taking honors classes and challenging themselves I’m stuck in resource classes because of my Anxiety. Sped really does make you feel stupid and really lowers your self esteem even if it’s unintentional. I want to try and contact my counselor to see if I could try at least one honors class because I really want to challenge myself and plus it looks good on college applications.
Being in that class really makes you stupid and lazy of learning I’m a senior now and I only learn algebra 1 for three years Bc I’m in that class and I never took any chemistry and other science class Bc of that class I tired everything to. Get out of that damm class but all I get is oh no even my mom thinks same thing that class really makes you stupid
Unfortunately if you’re a senior it’s to late. You can go to a community college and work your way up if you do well at a community college you’ll be able to get into any college and look better than any high school student. I was in your situation and I’ll tell you that high school is utterly meaningless you shouldn’t feel upset or embarrassed. I’m living proof this can be overcome as I graduated from college after going through all of this.

But yeah my last comment was written at a time where I was still deeply insecure about not taking any honors or AP classes because I thought it reflected on my intelligence and how successful I’d be. But now I realize that those things don’t matter as much (or at least they shouldn’t matter much) and doesn’t reflect on my own capabilities thanks to advice like yours. Anytime. If you do well at a community college you can get an academic scholarship to a university. I had a friend did this. It took me a long time to get rolling but that’s because I let this shit get to me. Once I just started taking care of business I took off and before I knew it in 2016 I got my associates and in 2019 got my bachelors. It took a total of 7 years but from 2015 on I was a different person because I didn’t care anymore about my past. You can be much faster than I was if you just let this all go once you leave high school you’ll truly be free to accomplish whatever you want and nothing holding you back your time to will come.

I hate when kids would ask me "Why are you in special ed" I would make up lies and I would say to them "Because they want to see if I'm different in a special ed room than a regular classroom, they will switch me back in 2 months" My parents would say that I'm not dumb I'm smart but the thing is im lazy and I would never pay attention in class and that's why they see me struggling, so therefore they thought It was best for me to be put in a special ed room, I was never special ed my entire life until I was put in special ed for the 7th grade, I wasn't in the special ed room on the first day of school I was in a regular classroom advance and then later on in April of 2019 I was sent to special ed and I spent 3 months in there and by that time I was being picked on by alot kids I started being depressed I couldn't take I wanted to kill myself then staying in a small classroom learning about 6th grade science, I'm *SO* embarrassed and I'm even nervous to go to school now I don't know what classroom I'm going to be in they said if I did really well in that classroom they will switch me back to an advance classroom so I'm really nervous

Yea, I was put into the class years ago. I didn't really think of it at all and I didn't care till 7th grade (I'm still in 7th grade today) I've seen internet memes about special ed and all that stuff so it made me feel like it's embarrassing to be in those classes. But I really like the teachers, they actually treat us like a student and not a baby. Sometimes, I would hide from students if they saw me in those classes because those students who would walk pass the class are in the advanced class.
That was me in middle school the students would ask me why I'm in special ed and I would make a witty joke just to dodge the question and I remember being embarrassed to be seen with the special ed kids because most of them we're intellectual disabled and the other kids be looking at me like what's wrong with him

How the Law Should Be: 1. The School Should Need to have at Least 2 faculty members who Independently come to the conclusion that a student has ADHD, learning disability, mental illness, etc 2. The school Should first consult w/ the student for his/her opinion and then need the Permission of the Parents/Guardian to administer an IQ test or psychological evaluation. 3. The school Should have to Consult with the Student's Doctor before making any kind of diagnosis or prescribing treatment such as forcing the student into therapy or drugs under threat of expulsion. 4. The Parents should have the Right to a 2nd Opinion from a 3rd party doctor if they disagree w/ the school psychologist's findings.

Thats how mild and real special education worka in my school but its all about money, in america people are overally brain washed and dumb, some upper social school people putting shy, bad students, etc to ed istead of putting bullies who actually have problems like anger, family arguments etc.
That is because these students are kept in restrictive settings and are not getting the socialization they need and are supposed to. They are supposed to have exposure to the general population of students. Some special ed programs even have students that volunteer to come and socialize with them. This is a violation unless the IEP requires such restrictions of the student due to their disability which is extremely rare. So sad that all they want is friends, most of the LEAs know nothing about an Individualized Education Program. Education Department makes all their money off of special education that's why they love placing kids in special education yet the kids get nothing, what a disgrace!! Poor kids suffered, I really hope there is a class action.
Honestly tho, I wanna improve the special Ed system, which is why I want to be a special Ed teacher when I grow up. Those with special needs need to be integrated into our society, and them interacting with Gen Ed kids is the only way
special ed is TERRIBLE and NEEDS reform. Special education held me back from taking classes that were within my grade. I was excelling in music in art in elementary school, until fourth grade. Because I was deemed a “slow learner”, despite being one of the smartest kids in my class of five, I was held back a grade with music and art. Instead of going into fourth grade classes, I had to take third grade classes DESPITE PASSING THEM. I had to do the SAME SHIT in fifth grade. not only this, but teachers would constantly grab at students if they spaced out, would always be physical with them to get their way, and would always scream in the faces of HEARING SENSITIVE AUTISTIC CHILDREN. and then wondered why students felt fuckin scared of her smh. she even got mad at us for saying that we were scared of her and “took points off our point sheet for disrespect.” Then middle school came. Things were... alright in sixth grade. I was able to take classes that was in my grade level... but I was prevented from going to more classes. Similar to elementary, I wasn’t allowed to take art, home ec, music, and even history class. (I only was in my history classroom to take the constitution test.) Then seventh grade, the worst year, came at me. I wasnt allowed in art (still!), history, home ec, music, science and history. I attended a guitar class for a few months in seventh grade, only for my homeroom teacher to pull me out of it DESPITE THAT I WAS EXCELLING. Not only all of this, but there were punishments that heightened my anxiety. If I had a panic attack, meltdown or breakdown in class, the teacher forcibly removed me and PUT ME INTO THE BACK OF ANOTHER ACTIVE CLASSROOM WITH 20+ STUDENTS. I had SEVERE SOCIAL ANXIETY at this age and I was used to being in a class with no more than five people, so imagine the utter fear I felt when all eyes turned on me when I walked in a gen ed classroom. Imagine the fear I felt as I had snot running down my nose, puffy eyes and a red face, walking into a classroom with normal students taking a test and they all just sit and stare at me. We had this “level system” where id you behave perfectly for long enough, (meaning no melt downs or any kind of anxiety.) youll move up a level. I was always stuck on level one and two bc of my Autism, severe social anxiety, and ocd. I would constantly have anxiety attacks, pick at my skin/hair, and I would be too anxious to ask for help. Because of showin these symptoms I was held back on the level system. But whats so special about this level system you ask? Well say if someone gets to level three, theyre actually allowed to take science and history class! Wow! So if you act like a perfect little normal kid for a few months, the school will deem you ready to take HISTORY AND SCIENCE CLASS. The fourth level (being he highest, and takes 4 months to achieve) has you be able to go to art, home ec, music, and on field trips. 8th grade was the first time I ever was put in a gen ed classroom. My mom moved out of the suburbs and we moved into the city of Chicago. I was FINALLY in a gen ed class and it hit me like a brick. I was SO far behind with almost every single one of my classes (except reading) because I wasn’t taught proper shit in special ed. Especially in math, because guess who was never taught how to do percentages! I knew little to nothing about the revolutionary and civil war, and I barely knew a thing about science. Special ed ruins lives and I demand that its reformed. I’m currently a drop out working to get his GED. I dropped out of my junior year in high school because I thought “education wasn’t for me” and that i was too retarded to take “normal people classes.” I hope a special education teacher sees this comment and understands the absolute struggle of autistic children who have the misfortune to endure special ed. I hope that if one is reading this, that they take the time out of their day to fight for autistic kids’ right to learn basic knowledge in classes. sorry for the sob story, but this hit way too close to home to not say anything. sped fucked up my life and education and it hurts seeing it happen to other autistic kids.

I have autism and was never put in special ed due to my high IQ of 144. Even though in gen ed i had assistant teacher in almost every class. I found that 3/7 weren't toxic. 2 of which were really understanding. I found that 9 /10 were nice to me and 5/10 helped more than 5 of the assistant teachers. I never really meltdowns i think i had 3 but instead i have shutdowns.
This happened to me too. It hit me in 7th grade thag if I don't fight no one will fight for me my parents can do so much. So I rebelled I fought back and I demanded a better education for myself. I was 13 years old learning my ABC'S treated like a 4 year old and I fought back. I was placed in gen ed but my teachers would kick me out and send me else where to do busy work for the school I was a secretary to them. I fought and was punished for it so when my state exams came I failed them all. I didn't fail the school failed me they failed to give me a proper education. So I threatened them if they didnt let me learn im the classroom I would call the state education board. Which is what I did long story short many teachers got their teaching license taken away and many were fired. I moved after that year for my personal safety due to the bullying I faced. I was so far behind I didn't know anything from the 7th grade material and when my teachers asked me I just said " my teachers would kick me out of class as soon as I walked into the door they didn't want me to learn" and it broke them here was a 14 year old closed off shy scared just wanting a better education. They helped me learn and I scored higher grades than my peers and I had this hunger for learning. Now here I am nearly 21 years old studying education so this never ever happens again. It ends with me they cycle breaks with me and I will refuse to let it happen to any other child.
I have autism and all the special ed teachers treated me like I was five and acting like I didn’t understand facial expressions like happy sad despite being in 7th grade and they talked to me in this baby voice that made me want to punch them
I was in special ed for the dumbest fucking reason, my TCAP scores. I’ll admit, I was lazy, because I really didn’t feel like taking a 3-hour state exam two weeks before summer. I wasn’t stupid, just lazy. Now, I have an MBA from ASU, and work for one of the biggest trailer loading conveyor companies in the country. These students aren’t stupid, the system itself is a failure who only cares about students that don’t need special attention. Besides, people who bully special needs kids usually turn out to be washed up shitbags who peaked in high school.

When I was in middle school my psychiatrist told my mom to put me in a special needs classroom, but the school refused because they said I wouldn't learn anything. I'm glad I wasn't put in special ed because if I was put in special ed I would have never been able to pass the TASC exam at 18. Yes I dropped out because I was bullied in my regular ed classes. But if I was put in special ed I would have never been able to pass that exam.
I would of never made it to my high school graduation and to college had I not fought for my right to a better education in 7th grade. Now, Im studying education Special Education I want to be the voice for the quiet voices of those rooms. Who will fight for them? No one will only me. My heart is in it and I it will stay forever.
Anyone else is having a hard time at their job because of special education and because of low reading skills I was placed in special education for 15 years of my life and let me just tell you I graduated back in 2012 and I just quit six jobs because of my situation are used to work at Walmart to six months ago and I hate it so much and reading skills was very hard for me and the managers and employees were very rude also and they don’t they don’t help a lot I have been treated very bad most of my life and now I’m walking a shitty job making shitty money and now I quit Walmart and. I’m working only two days a week so thank you special-education for ruining my life
Why not you go to adult high school and job programming? Never been to adult high school, but it will help you to rebuild confidence and turn your life around, having job program will give you a boost of getting you a job. Also, I can read well and having no problem of my reading skills.

As someone with autism and adhd who got out of the special education system and has friends who are currently in the process of getting diagnosed with autism who are in most of the honors and accelerated courses at my school (I am too). I don’t give a fuck that most of these comments are 5+ years old I finally feel like I am heard and understood even though my friends with autism can understand me to a certain degree they can’t empathize with my experience in the special education system and just reading all these comments finally makes me feel like I am heard and understood by others. I’m in special Ed in high school and I agree with a lot of you guys I get embarrassed because I’m with kids that have a lot of issues because I’m behind the other kids because of my high function Autism. It sucks and I really wish one day I can have a normal high school life with the kids without issues but I know that’s probably never gonna happen

I was in special ed classes from 6th grade to me dropping out 11th grade. It was tough because i was laughed at and joked. I was labeled " slow " or " dumb " simply because i learn different and just needed a few more examples. It's not a learning disability nor special education, its a better understanding of the lessons being taught. Think about this example: Every student including YOU reading this has had some type of struggle of a subject like Math or Spanish, is that a learning disability? If you agree then anyone that struggled with a subject during school has or had a learning disability. It's amazing that the same people that laughed and joked me aren't as intelligent or successful as me. Even the girls i asked out laughed in my face are now in my face asking me to hang out😂. It hurt that i was treated like that but the people that treated me that way need me and im teaching them things... nobody is perfect and i want any Gifted students reading this to know that don't worry about what people say because those people will continue to fail and struggle in something you're good at ❤.

I maybe not a scientist nor a therapist but I do believe that special education makes mental health worse. Think about it, ever since I was forced to be in ones, my stress levels, anxiety, and depression has gotten worse. Also, I have noticed that a lot of kids in those classes ends up skipping them or even cuts school in general due to the fact how easy the classes are. Worst of all, my 11th grade Power English class felt like a first grade one and I was miserable. Heck, I wasn’t that bad in those classes in the years before that.
I was in special ed my whole school career but I also took some regular ed classes and did very well but the regular ed kids hated me because I made the highest grade in the class.
I completely know this feeling. I was put into these classes like 2 weeks ago and I hate it so much. I don’t even want to tell my friends because I’m afraid that they will leave me. Carla Linton. When I was in school. I was in Speacial Ed.And I had Low Self Esteem because I thought I was stupid because I was in Special Ed. And when I Graduated from High School. I got a Special Education Diploma.
Carla Linton: It shouldn't matter, you should still be able to go to a community college and take the placement exams. You may have to take some extra classes until you get to college level work, but you can do it. I was in mid-level Sp Ed and I graduated from college. It took me 5 quarters of math to finally get to college level math, so 6 quarters total of math. It can be done! You can do it!
When I was in special education for elementary and middle school. I got the help I needed and my teachers were all supportive, but the minute I get to high school the teachers are just not really helpful. So I took a test during my IEP meeting around the end of the year and now i'm in general ed again.
They had me in an extra math class with like...8 other people and that made me feel hella dumb. Like I was so dumb that I needed two whole math classes?? And the amount of people in that class showed me that a majority of people were actually really smart and I was just one of the stupid ones. I was actually missing science for that class so when I finally got into a science class at my new school I barely understood what they were talking about.
That's what happened to me I was in special education from first grade until High School by the time I reach Middle School I was behind so many years at first they put me in regular classes and I didn't understand the worksheets after 2 months they put me back in special education and didn't do anything at all I was behind even in high school now I'm now. I'm getting older I try to apply to a community college but the Community College disability service center I said I don't have enough credit now I'm walking in a shity job making shity I was still having problem learning and to be honest with you special education fucked up my career I don't have any friends just sitting home and playing Call of Duty and work in night time shift
Same here the other kids were really smart and I felt dumb just looking at them getting things right that I’m supposed to be knowing but don’t they don’t even teach me shit in this sped class and I was put in one regular class and couldn’t understand what the assignment was and I asked the teacher and she just ignored me I hate being ignored it just makes me feel bad and after that they didn’t give me anymore regular classes until my 10 grade year and 11 grade year I have 3 regular classes now but I don’t understand the assignment but I’m constantly being ignored she talks to the others but when I ask for help she ignore me and imma afraid there gonna take those classes away and put me in more special Ed classes which I don’t want cuz they haven’t teached me shit besides basic math I already know to do and basic reading that is easy as hell to do and they talk to me like I’m 4 in that annoying ass baby voice
I was in special Ed cause I struggled in school with vision problems and anxiety and now I work as a special ed paraeducator. I believe it's a case by case issue but we are also responsible for our education. Students as they age can be a part of their iep plans. So I understand the system maybe outdated but I believe fully blaming the system of school does not solve the problem. It mix of family life, income level, school structure, and personal struggles whether it be physical or mental.
I got to special ed class because I was low rank at school I spent 5 year and wish I could go back and go to a normal Ed but please if people have normal class don't waste it work hard and get a good grade because your lucky and have a chance for a good future don't waste it like I did use it for good please.
I had trouble paying attention in school so I was in Special Ed with the handicap kids. My friends have intellectual and development disabilities. It was cool. But I had a teacher who would bully the other kids and me.

I was taken out of the class room after about 3rd grade for the most part and into normal classes and I still felt stupid. The stigma that we get from other kids after being isolated for 2 years or longer is annoying. The system sucks and I strive with the rest of the days of my life to fight this trashy system of the flaws of the special education system. I rode the bus with normal kids unlike the other special education kids and I always called "shot gun" or front seat because my bus driver was my only buddy while everyone else stereotyped me or didn't even know me.
I grew up in the 1970s without any tutor, special classes or diagnosis. I would have loved to have had someone help me. No teacher, principal, parent even cared enough to help. As it turns out i am asd 1 and adhd as my parents were. Be happy there are tutors, teachers aides, diagnostic tests and so much more.

Exactly, Im a very calm and normal dude, Im good at making friends, but at my 4th grade I kinda struggled and I got put in special ed, and we have in our classes 2 special kids who have a lot of mental issues, and I feel bad because despite that its not their fault that they are like that, I feel sad that Im being compared to them, when they put me with them. But in highschool I begin to avoid everyone but one regular girl asking me what my next class i really don't wanna answer her but my best friend stood up for me and say " our next schedule is lunch! She's a special Ed, if your ask her what test or what regular homework she's got? DON'T ASK! Girl!" I was shock 😲 my bff stood up for me. We starting to walk towards our lunch time.
I was a Special Ed student from 1st-7th grade. It was understandable why I had to be here. But the problem was that, unlike most Special Ed kids, I don't have moderate/severe disability and having high functioning autism. Because I learned very fast, they would get rid of me by put me in regular class. I was a shy girl back then, so other than that, I have a happy childhood. But I think the reason why nobody wants to be my friend in high school because I was ugly with long hair. That was why I have to wear glasses and cut my hair.

Yeah. I have an IEP. I'm not autistic, but this IEP makes me stupid. I am tired of not having an elective. I wanted to be like normal students. I don't need to be treated like a baby anymore from the get-go. I can do things myself and I want to be like a normal student
Even when I officially began my 90% "normal" class/ "normal"student classrooms I still had a perfectionistic view because I would always think everyone else was doing better than me. I stressed out so much due to stigma and comparing myself, but I'm glad that I eventually escaped most of the special education classroom at the very least. We all know that students go into the special education system but never come out. I preferred normal classes because even though I was awkward a bit and lacked social skills, I eventually learned a few life lessons and escaped a bit more of the percentage of what the average special education kids goes through. The whole education system makes me mad in all honesty, but the special education system especially because all the normal people who make the rules think that they understand us, but they really don't. Fighting to change the system is my life goal and I don't plan on giving up until something is done...
I had special ed teacher named Miss. Brovont and for 3 years in my math class and she encouraged me and classmates that we would do well in our class and we passed our tests every year because of her support to help us do well and understand the math subject
I don't think I'd have such an intolerance for sped kids if I wasn't shoved in classes with these kids my whole life. When these kids are stuck on a question for like 15 minutes and it starts effecting MY education I get pissed off. Adults need to stop throwing all types of kids in one class, they need to try to make the regular classes work before throwing kids in these hell holes known as sped classrooms
Anonymous Profile if anything that’s good. Regular schools kill the fun and insist on being politically correct, if it’s a private sped school then they legally can do whatever parties they want. Usually sped schools are smaller and you can get away with those things more. Either way that’s a good thing because it’s fun. Talk to anyone who went to school before the 1990s and most will tell you how awesome it was having Christmas parties, and even the non-catholic kids had a blast. After the 90s regular schools started to get politically correct.

Ya fr I’m this guy was working Addition and he was stuck on a equation and I was waiting on my teacher to be done helping him and ended up waisting my god damn time and I was working on my algebra assignment and literally did three equations cuz of that kid and he didn’t even help me out on it in my 6th grade year I was so pissed I mean the parties they do are fun but I hate being in this sped class it’s not doing anything just making me feel dumb and being bullied by people and talking to me like I’m fucking 4 🤦🏾♂️
Yea I did Both Special ed and regular ed In high school it was awesome I loved to see if I could hang and compete with the regular Ed kids did Special Ed Math/English Regular Ed I had History/Science and of course electives is always regular ed but anyway they said I was to dump for school and I will be in a wheel chair i proved them wrong when I got into high school they saw a difference I have ADHD/Learning Mood Disorders Depression now seeing PTSD my mom would change my disability because she thought she was my medical doctor what’s funny was when I was taking Special Ed classes they did talk to me like I was 5 when and would get mad and go to my school counselor then I went to my regular ed classes I felt like a whole new person they would greet me show me respect compliment me and push me and one of the teachers told me that I was one of the smartest kids in her class top 3 a special ed kid coming home with As and Bs I would want to cry in the history class but I didn’t when it came to test day I would go out the class screaming I got a A or B my friends would congratulate me they where straight regular ed greatest moment in my life time of high school junior year senior year was overrated but yea it was amazing💯😘✌🏾🗣 #Classof18🤙💍

I know the feeling I was in special education classes in 7-8th grade but we had what was called mainstream classes I would be in regular education classes for math,science,English,history but the small class my homeroom and I went there for extra help.But students would tease me and yet I was the one helping them with their homework and class work yet they teased me all the time but would come to me the slow kid in special Ed for help that made me feel good.I mean half the people in there don’t belong in there they put anyone in there cause behavior problems,ADHD, anxiety you don’t even need to have a learning disability.But when I was in high school I was in regular classes but it’s like torture for special education students.I know what’s it’s like people think you stupid and dum and yet I had good grades and other students would ask why am I am in special education classes when I do well in regular classes.I would just say it’s the teachers fault they only want a pay check and don’t take the time out to help some some students.I know kids who dropped out of school cause of being teased for being in special education classes if only people knew the pain and the embarrassment I would cry to my aunt I didn’t want go to school cause the other kids would pick on me I was so depressed.But one teacher told me I had the best grade in class cause of a test I had a 100 and this was my regular education class it was then the other kids couldn’t make fun of me cause I was like only kid who they called stupid who passed.Lol so I use to that against every time they would tease me and the bullying stopped. I had them coming to me after class to help.So don’t feel bad these other regular education kids are no better either and I felt like my parents could’ve fought harder for me to keep in regular education classes but it was a learning experience.
I think they mean special needs not special ed. Special Ed is for people to struggle with an academic learning disability: Dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia ect... I myself have dyscalculia and received services in special ed and never had a classmate this delayed as the ones in the video.
I got into a special ed in high school when i actually wanted to go into film school, and i didnt get into there cuz of my stupidity but because of my laziness, but yet they still treat me like an animal in a cage, but i have friends that help me through hard times and still cheer me up and belives that i will become something great one day😁

@@tangiechapman6219 yes !!! those moderate severe classes are bad, i can understand having a couple semesters or even 1 year of a life and job skills program, but this 4 + years of life skills classroom, really hinders and holds back people and it denies them exposure to things like science, maths, art, music, band, ect, that they might develop or discover they have skills in, that can lead to growth and a real job a real life out in the real world

I'm not bragging when I say this, but I received a presidents education award even without straight A's, (it wasn't as privileged as the straight A kid of course) but I didn't deserve it because I never learned a single thing at school. It was easy because it was repetitive, but hurt me in the long run when I finally learned something new in high school. I never learned how to take a test very well because of the system, so I struggled throughout high school.I didn't learn much math because I had the trashy version of repeated math in middle school and my high school teacher and my science teacher began with their implicit teacher bias against me for being bad at math. I spent many years with so much repetitive material that I struggled in high school math such as after my freshman year. It got to the point where I had a long period of a whole trimester during my junior year when I just broke down and fell into deep depression because of my crappy IEP. I learned to be thankful for my breakdown though, because I finally found the life lessons I needed a long time ago (not until my k-12 years were almost over of course). I became a diagnostic perfectionist to the extreme and I went my whole life feeling like I was bad at everything I did. I was a failure; that's what I thought until my U.S. History and Ethnic Studies teacher taught me otherwise during my junior - senior year. I finally learned to have faith in myself and that failure is a part of success, not the opposite of success. Every toddler falls down before he learns to walk. Same goes to riding a bike or an olympic athlete in development.

I’m special ed, take the regular classes. I also have to go to ot. But I do have one class different, I have advisory with other people with minor disabilities the teacher just seems to not understand that we are different.
I'm just going to go on a tangent here, hahaha! It really makes me mad the fact that the reading program didn't even teach me the vowel sounds: A, E, I, O,U. Yet they still just only reported: "she needs to advocate herself a little more." " She's doing bad at this, her reading level is this low, her math score is this low." Well no dip Sherlock! You teach me 1st grade math and make me skip 2nd, 3rd and 4th and you wonder why I struggle at math my 5th grade year! I still managed to get a B, but still, this system makes me angry! My tutor who I started during 4th grade said that I was the fastest person to learn to read well. It wasn't because I was particularly smart, but rather that it's because I was actually learning something new and not just the stupid alphabet: "A, apple a, B, boy,b,ect." 🙄 (I might be a bad person for doing this, but when my tutor started the alphabet in her teaching, I gave a bit of attitude with my tone of voice because I thought it was the dumb reading program all over again, but guess what? I learned something new unlike any results I would get under the dumb education system which just complains about the kids instead of finding a solution like a smart person). Special education kids are not stupid! Just because you as the average person don't understand us doesn't give you the right to stereotype us and underestimate us. Not to be rude, but the stereotyping made by normal people towards us doesn't make us/ the "special education" kids stupid, it makes you as the average kid stupid because you're so cocky and arrogant. It doesn't help the fact that normal kids who don't feel comfortable will bully you and underestimate you or so to say 'throw the rock at you' to make their own foolish and narcissistic self feel much better. We need to stop separating our kids and stop teaching "normal" kids that it's okay to boost their own ego through being a jerk and 'throwing rocks at others instead of being smart and making their own foundation of self understanding and faith in oneself.' Don't be dumb and tear others down to make yourself feel better because the more you waste your rocks the harder the hurricane comes down upon you, so to say.

When I was in 5th grade I was really bad at math. So while we took test my teacher made me and this other kid sit on the dirty floor by her desk while all the other kids got to sit at a table. It was so embarrassing.
As long as the determining factor for core academics is merit, it benefits everyone for integration. But I draw the line at allowing everyone into AP history, calculus, or even Algebra 1 - these have to have the basic qualifications to access. And I say this as someone who required SpEd for years due to my dyslexia. My attitude was determined mostly by my parents - I accepted my reality, took full advantage of the special services, and with years of work it barely effects me today.

One of my special ed teachers was awful. Make a mistake? Get criticism.. wash my hair and she thinks its greasy from conditioner? Get pulled in the hallway and confronted about it? Not feeling good? Go home but get bothered about absences the next day. And MANY other things. I was so glad to be done with high school and move on. And I pray now that she gets help and rethinks now that she’s retired.

Kids don't go to adult jail. They get sent to juvenile centers, if they get into too much trouble. Every special education program is for kids with disabilities. I got put in special education in the 6th grade with no disability. I just needed a little extra help in regular education and I would have been fine. The teachers gave up on me though and put me in special education. I got my GED and graduated college since then and I have a great job, but I always remember being in special education. It could have ruined my life, but I survived and made it.
okay you know what, I was in a type of special ed class called an ssc class, I’ve been going there since 2nd grade and I’m pretty sure I won’t get out of it until 8th grade. I feel stupid to be in that class, also ssc classes are for literacy and math only, literacy is easy, a few months ago we all read a book called “bridge to terabithia” and 2 other kids (a 6th grader who is autistic, and my friend) got separated and had to read a book called ricky ricada or something. I also remember one of my locker buddies asked my FRIEND (the one who read the Ricky ricada book) what 5x5 is, he was like, “uh 15? Wait no 10!” then my locker buddy said “well no, the answer is 25.” then my friend went into the classroom so my locker buddy asked me “what does he learn in that class??” i feel great that he’s also interested about how ssc works! I also get DIFFERENT TESTS from others just cuz I’m an ssc student and what I will learn will be “too complicated” but one good thing is that my ssc teacher is so sweet! she’s very understanding too! and one last thing, both of the ssc and my regular class had to do a test, our class had a test that was 1 page long, and no backside, WELL AS FOR MY NORMAL CLASS, HAD SUCH A LONG TEST THEY NEEDED TO FINISH IT AT THE END OF THE DAY. so yeah, and ssc classes FINALLY end at the end of the year in grade 8 (unless your lucky enough to be in a normal class in the middle of the year) I might fail highschool cuz we learn so differently from the regular classes, but like I might be able to be in a normal literacy class! I can finally be like a normal person, and I don’t have a disability anyway

I have an iep and considered special ed but I never felt it. I mean I didn't have like a drastic learning disability and I'm in regular class heck I'm even in advanced classes in highschool . I don't feel "dumb" . just because you need special education doesn't make you dumb.

I am a special education teacher and the truth is we are so strangled by laws, documentation, and paperwork we can never devote all the time and attention we would like. I never reveal I am a Sped teacher or tell the kids they are in a sped class, especially when I do co-teaching with a Gen Ed teacher. We work with every kid - both sped and Gen Ed so no one is singled out. Once kids learn I am a sped teacher they ostracize me, won’t let me help and say things like “I’m not a retard…” so I keep my mouth shut. In my opinion we are all “special Ed” because we each have our own unique way of learning - and my job is to find out what that is for each kid and adjust accordingly. Sped makes me feel like an outcast as well, and we are often treated like second class teachers by our colleagues- some of whom shove a kid your way and say “you deal with this…” I do love my job - and my kids, but “sped” stigmatizes us all and that in the end serves no one…
I was in special ed from the time I was in third grade until I was in 12th it's a very segregated system I would not wish this on anybody I have hemiparesis I am a brain damage victim but that being said I tend to try to catch up with pretty much anybody in my own capacity and I don't think that segregating a bunch of students because of their inability to do something is the right thing to do
Ugh, I have Essential Skills Development (Which is a supervised study hall with assistance) which is for kids with *specific learning disability* . I don't have a learning disability. And in my IEP meaning they suggested me to be in an AP class. How odd is that?
I remember my 8th grade math teacher (special Ed) read us a book most of the time and i failed that class, like come on now my math teacher and it was only class I failed but I made it to high school through the hard work of summer school tryed out the for the football team and got kicked out because of failing 8th grade math. I was also labeled "special ed" as "learning disabled" or LD. I personally think they over diagnose these things. Special education is important for those who really need it but if you put a child in special ed unnecessarily it can be EXTREMLY detrimental emotionally and educationally. I picked an easy career because I felt I could never be smart enough for the career I wanted - Nursing! I am now working on my BSN and pregnant with my first child

I grew up in special ed, and it sucks so much. The term "special ed" is demeaning. I remember in middle school I had anger management problems, and this teacher would tell me that if a kid was giving me problems, then I should just come to him instead of trying to solve it myself. Once I finally took his advice when this other special ed kid was calling me a f***ot, I went to him, and he said "what do you want me to do about it?" Sarcastically. This problem exists because special ed either gets really compassionate teachers, or teachers that are so sh** that they couldnt qualify for mainstream. Imo, there should be no E.D. program. If you are actually mentally disabled, then sure, get your own tailored class, but if you just have behavioral issues, then be in mainstream. Putting us in special ed only makes us a target for bullies and socially isolates us and makes us feel like we are trash that doesnt matter in the slightest, and it shelters mainstream studenta because they dont have to deal with us. But they will in adulthood. Theres no "special ed jobs" you cant hide us away at the boys and girls club either. It only creates a false expectation of reality for them. And as for helping our behavioral issues, how is putting us in a separated class full of other kids with behavioral issues going to help us. It only reinforces the maladaptive traits. Special ed is a garbage program. It should only exist for the mentally disabled.
I don’t have a learning disability, but I do have autism. I just wanna put my two cents in. At my high school (I’m from Delaware), we have this thing called Huddle every Wednesday, which is basically useless and wastes learning time In my case, I have two huddle leaders (whom I like), but I’m shoved into a huddle with other IEP students whom I barely know. The saddest thing is that I’m the only really high achieving student there, and one of three or four girls. Honestly schools should have 2 different special Ed classes: one for students like me who only have behavioral problems (or mild intellectual disability), and the other is for those who have severe autism/pronounced learning disabilities and integrate those with behavior-only disabilities into mainstream classes, provided they have the appropriate accommodations (such as being able to take breaks)
I was in special ed, too. That was one of the problems I had with the program. So many of the kids in there didn't have even the slightest learning disability. They had behavioral problems, and because the school board didn't want them disrupting regular ed kids, they dumped them in with us special ed kids, expecting the special ed teacher to baby sit them rather than educate them. I hated it. And it is made even worse when these kids with these behavioral issues know they're in there for that and not because they're "stupid," which creates a dynamic where they feel they are better than the students with learning disabilities. But the school districts don't want to dump money into solving the issue. So many times I would ask myself why someone was in a special ed class when it was apparent that they didn't belong there.
The real problem is the government shouldn't be running our schools. More then 30 years ago they had schools for kids with slow learning disabilities. I went to one from 3rd to 6 grade with teachers who put in a effort. In the 6th grade I had a teacher Mr. Stalton he Kept some of us after school and taught us algebra he would take us home after school. The government decided to cut expenses in education and they closed all the schools. There was no Bullies because everyone in the school had learning disabilities. It's not the teachers who are the problem it's the government. Then when I went to junior high we called it back then now middle school they threw me in a special education Class with kids with needs beyond. My teacher was horrible I hated the class. Fortunately for me I was taken out of the class In the 9th grade. I don't know how I did it being that I was far behind my grade level. It took me an extra year to graduate.
@@tarag7292 this upsets me a lot. the reason why I’m in special education and have an IEP is because I have a hearing impairment and was told that if it weren’t for that I wouldn’t even be In the program and would be with the rest of the “normal kids” and I was also told by a TEACHER during my IEP meeting that I didn’t act like your typical “sped” since I get really good grades and because i’m an honor roll student. I got upset with my sped teacher one time because he mentioned how there have been times where I forget that I have history homework and get upset when it’s the due date since I never did the homework. The reason that upset me was because I’m very responsible with my school work and I don’t allow myself to have a grade below a 90 and always do my homework (I’m a perfectionist and put a lot of pressure on myself) and the ONE time I do forget I have homework he ends up focusing so much on that and makes it seem like it’s an occasional thing when it only happened once. I also have a friend who is in the program with me and the one time she seems visibly upset her mother gets a big message by our sped teacher on how her daughter should be in counseling for “behavioral issues” when she is usually very well behaved and polite and just happened to be upset that one day. I feel that there is a lot of discrimination against students in the program, and the times you make one mistake no matter how good you behave, and how amazing you are academically, that doesn’t matter to them because at the end of the day in their eyes you’ll always be a sped and there will always be something wrong with you.

I was put in special ed, and its fucked with my life in so many ways. I was forced into a classroom because a lable was shoved on me me "autistic." I was an outcast and was bullied like the rest of the special ed students. It didnt help my family thought so little of me because of my autism and oh boy they sure werent secretive about it. It stunt my social skills because we were isolated from everyone all of middle and highschool. I also learnt nothing during special ed, i never got to learn fractions in math and continued to read childrens books in 9th grade. I barely passed school, i am the only special ed student who got a diploma at my school because i had to try really hard at school, unlike the others who weren't able to. I want to be a psychiatrist. Did my school help me out with college like other students? Short answer no, they never taught me how it worked. I hated myself so much because of all these things. Schools should not be treating children like this. They aren't a nucense, they aren't a mistake, They are humans just like everyone else. It's a shame we have gotten to this point, and still nothing is being done about it...

I thought I was the only one who felt this way about sped but everyone here proved me otherwise! I’m currently a senior and have been in sped pretty much my whole life. I genuinely hate it. Because while all my friends are taking honors classes and challenging themselves I’m stuck in resource classes because of my Anxiety. Sped really does make you feel stupid and really lowers your self esteem even if it’s unintentional. I want to try and contact my counselor to see if I could try at least one honors class because I really want to challenge myself and plus it looks good on college applications.

Unfortunately if you’re a senior it’s to late. You can go to a community college and work your way up if you do well at a community college you’ll be able to get into any college and look better than any high school student. I was in your situation and I’ll tell you that high school is utterly meaningless you shouldn’t feel upset or embarrassed. I’m living proof this can be overcome as I graduated from college after going through all of this.

But yeah my last comment was written at a time where I was still deeply insecure about not taking any honors or AP classes because I thought it reflected on my intelligence and how successful I’d be. But now I realize that those things don’t matter as much (or at least they shouldn’t matter much) and doesn’t reflect on my own capabilities thanks to advice like yours. Anytime. If you do well at a community college you can get an academic scholarship to a university. I had a friend did this. It took me a long time to get rolling but that’s because I let this shit get to me. Once I just started taking care of business I took off and before I knew it in 2016 I got my associates and in 2019 got my bachelors. It took a total of 7 years but from 2015 on I was a different person because I didn’t care anymore about my past. You can be much faster than I was if you just let this all go once you leave high school you’ll truly be free to accomplish whatever you want and nothing holding you back your time to will come.

I hate when kids would ask me "Why are you in special ed" I would make up lies and I would say to them "Because they want to see if I'm different in a special ed room than a regular classroom, they will switch me back in 2 months" My parents would say that I'm not dumb I'm smart but the thing is im lazy and I would never pay attention in class and that's why they see me struggling, so therefore they thought It was best for me to be put in a special ed room, I was never special ed my entire life until I was put in special ed for the 7th grade, I wasn't in the special ed room on the first day of school I was in a regular classroom advance and then later on in April of 2019 I was sent to special ed and I spent 3 months in there and by that time I was being picked on by alot kids I started being depressed I couldn't take I wanted to kill myself then staying in a small classroom learning about 6th grade science, I'm *SO* embarrassed and I'm even nervous to go to school now I don't know what classroom I'm going to be in they said if I did really well in that classroom they will switch me back to an advance classroom so I'm really nervous

Yea, I was put into the class years ago. I didn't really think of it at all and I didn't care till 7th grade (I'm still in 7th grade today) I've seen internet memes about special ed and all that stuff so it made me feel like it's embarrassing to be in those classes. But I really like the teachers, they actually treat us like a student and not a baby. Sometimes, I would hide from students if they saw me in those classes because those students who would walk pass the class are in the advanced class.

How the Law Should Be: 1. The School Should Need to have at Least 2 faculty members who Independently come to the conclusion that a student has ADHD, learning disability, mental illness, etc 2. The school Should first consult w/ the student for his/her opinion and then need the Permission of the Parents/Guardian to administer an IQ test or psychological evaluation. 3. The school Should have to Consult with the Student's Doctor before making any kind of diagnosis or prescribing treatment such as forcing the student into therapy or drugs under threat of expulsion. 4. The Parents should have the Right to a 2nd Opinion from a 3rd party doctor if they disagree w/ the school psychologist's findings.

It should also include the student more. It’s their education.
That is because these students are kept in restrictive settings and are not getting the socialization they need and are supposed to. They are supposed to have exposure to the general population of students. Some special ed programs even have students that volunteer to come and socialize with them. This is a violation unless the IEP requires such restrictions of the student due to their disability which is extremely rare. So sad that all they want is friends, most of the LEAs know nothing about an Individualized Education Program. Education Department makes all their money off of special education that's why they love placing kids in special education yet the kids get nothing, what a disgrace!! Poor kids suffered, I really hope there is a class action.

Special education held me back from taking classes that were within my grade. I was excelling in music in art in elementary school, until fourth grade. Because I was deemed a “slow learner”, despite being one of the smartest kids in my class of five, I was held back a grade with music and art. Instead of going into fourth grade classes, I had to take third grade classes DESPITE PASSING THEM. I had to do the SAME SHIT in fifth grade. not only this, but teachers would constantly grab at students if they spaced out, would always be physical with them to get their way, and would always scream in the faces of HEARING SENSITIVE AUTISTIC CHILDREN. and then wondered why students felt fuckin scared of her smh. she even got mad at us for saying that we were scared of her and “took points off our point sheet for disrespect.”
Then middle school came.
Things were... alright in sixth grade. I was able to take classes that was in my grade level... but I was prevented from going to more classes. Similar to elementary, I wasn’t allowed to take art, home ec, music, and even history class. (I only was in my history classroom to take the constitution test.)
Then seventh grade, the worst year, came at me. I wasnt allowed in art (still!), history, home ec, music, science and history. I attended a guitar class for a few months in seventh grade, only for my homeroom teacher to pull me out of it DESPITE THAT I WAS EXCELLING. Not only all of this, but there were punishments that heightened my anxiety. If I had a panic attack, meltdown or breakdown in class, the teacher forcibly removed me and PUT ME INTO THE BACK OF ANOTHER ACTIVE CLASSROOM WITH 20+ STUDENTS. I had SEVERE SOCIAL ANXIETY at this age and I was used to being in a class with no more than five people, so imagine the utter fear I felt when all eyes turned on me when I walked in a gen ed classroom. Imagine the fear I felt as I had snot running down my nose, puffy eyes and a red face, walking into a classroom with normal students taking a test and they all just sit and stare at me. We had this “level system” where id you behave perfectly for long enough, (meaning no melt downs or any kind of anxiety.) youll move up a level. I was always stuck on level one and two bc of my Autism, severe social anxiety, and ocd. I would constantly have anxiety attacks, pick at my skin/hair, and I would be too anxious to ask for help. Because of showin these symptoms I was held back on the level system. But whats so special about this level system you ask? Well say if someone gets to level three, theyre actually allowed to take science and history class! Wow! So if you act like a perfect little normal kid for a few months, the school will deem you ready to take HISTORY AND SCIENCE CLASS. The fourth level (being he highest, and takes 4 months to achieve) has you be able to go to art, home ec, music, and on field trips.
8th grade was the first time I ever was put in a gen ed classroom. My mom moved out of the suburbs and we moved into the city of Chicago. I was FINALLY in a gen ed class and it hit me like a brick. I was SO far behind with almost every single one of my classes (except reading) because I wasn’t taught proper shit in special ed. Especially in math, because guess who was never taught how to do percentages! I knew little to nothing about the revolutionary and civil war, and I barely knew a thing about science.
Special ed ruins lives and I demand that its reformed. I’m currently a drop out working to get his GED. I dropped out of my junior year in high school because I thought “education wasn’t for me” and that i was too retarded to take “normal people classes.”
I hope a special education teacher sees this comment and understands the absolute struggle of autistic children who have the misfortune to endure special ed. I hope that if one is reading this, that they take the time out of their day to fight for autistic kids’ right to learn basic knowledge in classes.

I have autism and was never put in special ed due to my high IQ of 144. Even though in gen ed i had assistant teacher in almost every class. I found that 3/7 weren't toxic. 2 of which were really understanding. I found that 9 /10 were nice to me and 5/10 helped more than 5 of the assistant teachers. I never really meltdowns i think i had 3 but instead i have shutdowns.
This happened to me too. It hit me in 7th grade thag if I don't fight no one will fight for me my parents can do so much. So I rebelled I fought back and I demanded a better education for myself. I was 13 years old learning my ABC'S treated like a 4 year old and I fought back. I was placed in gen ed but my teachers would kick me out and send me else where to do busy work for the school I was a secretary to them.
I fought and was punished for it so when my state exams came I failed them all. I didn't fail the school failed me they failed to give me a proper education. So I threatened them if they didnt let me learn im the classroom I would call the state education board. Which is what I did long story short many teachers got their teaching license taken away and many were fired.
I moved after that year for my personal safety due to the bullying I faced. I was so far behind I didn't know anything from the 7th grade material and when my teachers asked me I just said " my teachers would kick me out of class as soon as I walked into the door they didn't want me to learn" and it broke them here was a 14 year old closed off shy scared just wanting a better education. They helped me learn and I scored higher grades than my peers and I had this hunger for learning. Now here I am nearly 21 years old studying education so this never ever happens again. It ends with me they cycle breaks with me and I will refuse to let it happen to any other child.

I was in special ed for the dumbest fucking reason, my TCAP scores. I’ll admit, I was lazy, because I really didn’t feel like taking a 3-hour state exam two weeks before summer. I wasn’t stupid, just lazy. Now, I have an MBA from ASU, and work for one of the biggest trailer loading conveyor companies in the country. These students aren’t stupid, the system itself is a failure who only cares about students that don’t need special attention. When I was in middle school my psychiatrist told my mom to put me in a special needs classroom, but the school refused because they said I wouldn't learn anything. I'm glad I wasn't put in special ed because if I was put in special ed I would have never been able to pass the TASC exam at 18. Yes I dropped out because I was bullied in my regular ed classes. But if I was put in special ed I would have never been able to pass that exam.
I would of never made it to my high school graduation and to college had I not fought for my right to a better education in 7th grade. As someone with autism and adhd who got out of the special education system and has friends who are currently in the process of getting diagnosed with autism who are in most of the honors and accelerated courses at my school (I am too). I don’t give a fuck that most of these comments are 5+ years old I finally feel like I am heard and understood even though my friends with autism can understand me to a certain degree they can’t empathize with my experience in the special education system and just reading all these comments finally makes me feel like I am heard and understood by others. I was in special ed classes from 6th grade to me dropping out 11th grade. It was tough because i was laughed at and joked. I was labeled " slow " or " dumb " simply because i learn different and just needed a few more examples. It's not a learning disability nor special education, its a better understanding of the lessons being taught. Think about this example: Every student including YOU reading this has had some type of struggle of a subject like Math or Spanish, is that a learning disability? If you agree then anyone that struggled with a subject during school has or had a learning disability. It's amazing that the same people that laughed and joked me aren't as intelligent or successful as me. Even the girls i asked out laughed in my face are now in my face asking me to hang out😂. It hurt that i was treated like that but the people that treated me that way need me and im teaching them things... nobody is perfect and i want any Gifted students reading this to know that don't worry about what people say because those people will continue to fail and struggle in something you're good at ❤.

I maybe not a scientist nor a therapist but I do believe that special education makes mental health worse. Think about it, ever since I was forced to be in ones, my stress levels, anxiety, and depression has gotten worse. Also, I have noticed that a lot of kids in those classes ends up skipping them or even cuts school in general due to the fact how easy the classes are. Worst of all, my 11th grade Power English class felt like a first grade one and I was miserable. Heck, I wasn’t that bad in those classes in the years before that.
I was in special ed my whole school career but I also took some regular ed classes and did very well but the regular ed kids hated me because I made the highest grade in the class.

You may have to take some extra classes until you get to college level work, but you can do it. I was in mid-level Sp Ed and I graduated from college. It took me 5 quarters of math to finally get to college level math, so 6 quarters total of math. It can be done! You can do it!

When I was in special education for elementary and middle school. I got the help I needed and my teachers were all supportive, but the minute I get to high school the teachers are just not really helpful. So I took a test during my IEP meeting around the end of the year and now i'm in general ed again.
They had me in an extra math class with like...8 other people and that made me feel hella dumb. Like I was so dumb that I needed two whole math classes?? And the amount of people in that class showed me that a majority of people were actually really smart and I was just one of the stupid ones. I was actually missing science for that class so when I finally got into a science class at my new school I barely understood what they were talking about.
That's what happened to me I was in special education from first grade until High School by the time I reach Middle School I was behind so many years at first they put me in regular classes and I didn't understand the worksheets after 2 months they put me back in special education and didn't do anything at all I was behind even in high school now I'm now. I'm getting older I try to apply to a community college but the Community College disability service center I said I don't have enough credit now I'm walking in a shity job making shity I was still having problem learning and to be honest with you special education fucked up my career I don't have any friends just sitting home and playing Call of Duty and work in night time shift

I was in special Ed cause I struggled in school with vision problems and anxiety and now I work as a special ed paraeducator. I believe it's a case by case issue but we are also responsible for our education. Students as they age can be a part of their iep plans. So I understand the system maybe outdated but I believe fully blaming the system of school does not solve the problem. It mix of family life, income level, school structure, and personal struggles whether it be physical or mental.
I got to special ed class because I was low rank at school I spent 5 year and wish I could go back and go to a normal Ed but please if people have normal class don't waste it work hard and get a good grade because your lucky and have a chance for a good future don't waste it like I did use it for good please.

I had trouble paying attention in school so I was in Special Ed with the handicap kids. My friends have intellectual and development disabilities. It was cool. But I had a teacher who would bully the other kids and me.

I was taken out of the class room after about 3rd grade for the most part and into normal classes and I still felt stupid. The stigma that we get from other kids after being isolated for 2 years or longer is annoying. The system sucks and I strive with the rest of the days of my life to fight this trashy system of the flaws of the special education system. I rode the bus with normal kids unlike the other special education kids and I always called "shot gun" or front seat because my bus driver was my only buddy while everyone else stereotyped me or didn't even know me.

I grew up in the 1970s without any tutor, special classes or diagnosis. I would have loved to have had someone help me. No teacher, principal, parent even cared enough to help. As it turns out i am asd 1 and adhd as my parents were. Be happy there are tutors, teachers aides, diagnostic tests and so much more.

Exactly, Im a very calm and normal dude, Im good at making friends, but at my 4th grade I kinda struggled and I got put in special ed, and we have in our classes 2 special kids who have a lot of mental issues, and I feel bad because despite that its not their fault that they are like that, I feel sad that Im being compared to them, when they put me with them.
Most of the people in my class believe that Im mentally handicapped and DUMB (once someone even said "He's Dumb" and everytime that I have good grades they get surprised) the only person who doesnt believe that Im like those special kids is a new guy in our class, but thats because as he is new he isnt aware that SADLY Im special ):, we are close friends, EVEN MY CRUSH THINKS THAT IM LIKE THAT!

I remember when I first saw the special kids it was when I was in 4th grade I started failing miserably but at first I was one of the smartest kids in my class but once I moved to special ed my life became hell because every single time I will try to make friends from a regular class they will find out I’m in a special ed room and stop fuckin with me and that shit hurted my heart cuz I will literally pray to not go to school cause everybody will treat like I’m shit I used to get picked on by 8th graders but they could tell I was different from the kids ghat in my class because I didn’t have autism and they would ask me why that class and I didn’t know what to tell them but that shit made me angry so instead of my me fighting in school I focused on reading because that what I was good at but in the mean while that payed off because I go to regular classes from time to time and that shit used to give me anxiety bad like everybody stared at I wanted to hide in a corner but I started getting use to it but every single time I roast somebody bad they’ll say that’s why u was in a sped class and that shit hurt my sell just hearing it
I'm so related your story and words! Cuz i felt the same way man. I have a miserable life and mistreated by people I feel like i wanted to cry and scream at them but that never happened.... But in highschool I begin to avoid everyone but one regular girl asking me what my next class i really don't wanna answer her but my best friend stood up for me and say " our next schedule is lunch! She's a special Ed, if your ask her what test or what regular homework she's got? DON'T ASK! Girl!" I was shock 😲 my bff stood up for me. We starting to walk towards our lunch time.
I was a Special Ed student from 1st-7th grade.
It was understandable why I had to be here. But the problem was that, unlike most Special Ed kids, I don't have moderate/severe disability and having high functioning autism.
Because I learned very fast, they would get rid of me by put me in regular class.
I was a shy girl back then, so other than that, I have a happy childhood.
But I think the reason why nobody wants to be my friend in high school because I was ugly with long hair. That was why I have to wear glasses and cut my hair.

Yeah. I have an IEP. I'm not autistic, but this IEP makes me stupid. I am tired of not having an elective. I wanted to be like normal students. I don't need to be treated like a baby anymore from the get-go. I can do things myself and I want to be like a normal student

Even when I officially began my 90% "normal" class/ "normal"student classrooms I still had a perfectionistic view because I would always think everyone else was doing better than me. I stressed out so much due to stigma and comparing myself, but I'm glad that I eventually escaped most of the special education classroom at the very least. We all know that students go into the special education system but never come out. I preferred normal classes because even though I was awkward a bit and lacked social skills, I eventually learned a few life lessons and escaped a bit more of the percentage of what the average special education kids goes through. The whole education system makes me mad in all honesty, but the special education system especially because all the normal people who make the rules think that they understand us, but they really don't. Fighting to change the system is my life goal and I don't plan on giving up until something is done...

I don't think I'd have such an intolerance for sped kids if I wasn't shoved in classes with these kids my whole life. When these kids are stuck on a question for like 15 minutes and it starts effecting MY education I get pissed off. Adults need to stop throwing all types of kids in one class, they need to try to make the regular classes work before throwing kids in these hell holes known as sped classrooms
Anonymous Profile if anything that’s good. Regular schools kill the fun and insist on being politically correct, if it’s a private sped school then they legally can do whatever parties they want. Usually sped schools are smaller and you can get away with those things more.
Either way that’s a good thing because it’s fun. Talk to anyone who went to school before the 1990s and most will tell you how awesome it was having Christmas parties, and even the non-catholic kids had a blast. After the 90s regular schools started to get politically correct.

Yea I did Both Special ed and regular ed In high school it was awesome I loved to see if I could hang and compete with the regular Ed kids did Special Ed Math/English Regular Ed I had History/Science and of course electives is always regular ed but anyway they said I was to dump for school and I will be in a wheel chair i proved them wrong when I got into high school they saw a difference I have ADHD/Learning Mood Disorders Depression now seeing PTSD my mom would change my disability because she thought she was my medical doctor what’s funny was when I was taking Special Ed classes they did talk to me like I was 5 when and would get mad and go to my school counselor then I went to my regular ed classes I felt like a whole new person they would greet me show me respect compliment me and push me and one of the teachers told me that I was one of the smartest kids in her class top 3 a special ed kid coming home with As and Bs I would want to cry in the history class but I didn’t when it came to test day I would go out the class screaming I got a A or B my friends would congratulate me they where straight regular ed greatest moment in my life time of high school junior year senior year was overrated but yea it was amazing💯😘✌🏾🗣 #Classof18🤙💍

I know the feeling I was in special education classes in 7-8th grade but we had what was called mainstream classes I would be in regular education classes for math,science,English,history but the small class my homeroom and I went there for extra help.But students would tease me and yet I was the one helping them with their homework and class work yet they teased me all the time but would come to me the slow kid in special Ed for help that made me feel good.I mean half the people in there don’t belong in there they put anyone in there cause behavior problems,ADHD, anxiety you don’t even need to have a learning disability.But when I was in high school I was in regular classes but it’s like torture for special education students.I know what’s it’s like people think you stupid and dum and yet I had good grades and other students would ask why am I am in special education classes when I do well in regular classes.I would just say it’s the teachers fault they only want a pay check and don’t take the time out to help some some students.I know kids who dropped out of school cause of being teased for being in special education classes if only people knew the pain and the embarrassment I would cry to my aunt I didn’t want go to school cause the other kids would pick on me I was so depressed.But one teacher told me I had the best grade in class cause of a test I had a 100 and this was my regular education class it was then the other kids couldn’t make fun of me cause I was like only kid who they called stupid who passed.Lol so I use to that against every time they would tease me and the bullying stopped. I think they mean special needs not special ed. Special Ed is for people to struggle with an academic learning disability: Dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia ect... I myself have dyscalculia and received services in special ed and never had a classmate this delayed as the ones in the video.

I'm not bragging when I say this, but I received a presidents education award even without straight A's, (it wasn't as privileged as the straight A kid of course) but I didn't deserve it because I never learned a single thing at school. It was easy because it was repetitive, but hurt me in the long run when I finally learned something new in high school. I never learned how to take a test very well because of the system, so I struggled throughout high school.I didn't learn much math because I had the trashy version of repeated math in middle school and my high school teacher and my science teacher began with their implicit teacher bias against me for being bad at math. I spent many years with so much repetitive material that I struggled in high school math such as after my freshman year. It got to the point where I had a long period of a whole trimester during my junior year when I just broke down and fell into deep depression because of my crappy IEP. I learned to be thankful for my breakdown though, because I finally found the life lessons I needed a long time ago (not until my k-12 years were almost over of course). I became a diagnostic perfectionist to the extreme and I went my whole life feeling like I was bad at everything I did. I was a failure; that's what I thought until my U.S. History and Ethnic Studies teacher taught me otherwise during my junior - senior year. I finally learned to have faith in myself and that failure is a part of success, not the opposite of success. Every toddler falls down before he learns to walk. Same goes to riding a bike or an olympic athlete in development.

I’m special ed, take the regular classes. I also have to go to ot. But I do have one class different, I have advisory with other people with minor disabilities the teacher just seems to not understand that we are different.
I'm just going to go on a tangent here, hahaha! It really makes me mad the fact that the reading program didn't even teach me the vowel sounds: A, E, I, O,U. Yet they still just only reported: "she needs to advocate herself a little more." " She's doing bad at this, her reading level is this low, her math score is this low." Well no dip Sherlock! You teach me 1st grade math and make me skip 2nd, 3rd and 4th and you wonder why I struggle at math my 5th grade year! I still managed to get a B, but still, this system makes me angry! My tutor who I started during 4th grade said that I was the fastest person to learn to read well. It wasn't because I was particularly smart, but rather that it's because I was actually learning something new and not just the stupid alphabet: "A, apple a, B, boy,b,ect." 🙄
(I might be a bad person for doing this, but when my tutor started the alphabet in her teaching, I gave a bit of attitude with my tone of voice because I thought it was the dumb reading program all over again, but guess what? I learned something new unlike any results I would get under the dumb education system which just complains about the kids instead of finding a solution like a smart person).
Special education kids are not stupid! Just because you as the average person don't understand us doesn't give you the right to stereotype us and underestimate us. Not to be rude, but the stereotyping made by normal people towards us doesn't make us/ the "special education" kids stupid, it makes you as the average kid stupid because you're so cocky and arrogant. It doesn't help the fact that normal kids who don't feel comfortable will bully you and underestimate you or so to say 'throw the rock at you' to make their own foolish and narcissistic self feel much better. We need to stop separating our kids and stop teaching "normal" kids that it's okay to boost their own ego through being a jerk and 'throwing rocks at others instead of being smart and making their own foundation of self understanding and faith in oneself.' Don't be dumb and tear others down to make yourself feel better because the more you waste your rocks the harder the hurricane comes down upon you, so to say.

I have a read aload thing on tests and they would give me headphones for it and I would never use it because it makes me feel stupid and I can read ten times faster but then they tell I NEED IT TO UNDERSTAND WHEN I GET A WORSE SCORE WHEN I USE IT

When I was in 5th grade I was really bad at math. So while we took test my teacher made me and this other kid sit on the dirty floor by her desk while all the other kids got to sit at a table. It was so embarrassing.
As long as the determining factor for core academics is merit, it benefits everyone for integration. But I draw the line at allowing everyone into AP history, calculus, or even Algebra 1 - these have to have the basic qualifications to access. And I say this as someone who required SpEd for years due to my dyslexia. My attitude was determined mostly by my parents - I accepted my reality, took full advantage of the special services, and with years of work it barely effects me today.

One of my special ed teachers was awful. Make a mistake? Get criticism.. wash my hair and she thinks its greasy from conditioner? Get pulled in the hallway and confronted about it? Not feeling good? Go home but get bothered about absences the next day. And MANY other things. I was so glad to be done with high school and move on. And I pray now that she gets help and rethinks now that she’s retired.

The Special education program is ruining people's confidence and lives. I got put in those classes in 6th grade until 10 grade. I didn't learn anything during that time, so I eventually started acting out and getting into trouble. I got kicked out of school in the 10th grade for fighting. I few months later I started taking GED classes and It was a struggle. I remember taking a GED assessment when I started. I was on a 6th grade level and within a year, I passed my GED. 4 out of 10 high school graduates can't pass the GED. I have graduated from college since then with an associate degree and I have a great job, but I will always remember my past. All of my classmates that were in Special education with me are in jail, dead because of drugs, or working fast food. I'm the only one that truly made it and that's because of Jesus Christ and my family that never give up on me.

Kids don't go to adult jail. They get sent to juvenile centers, if they get into too much trouble. Every special education program is for kids with disabilities. I got put in special education in the 6th grade with no disability. I just needed a little extra help in regular education and I would have been fine. The teachers gave up on me though and put me in special education. I got my GED and graduated college since then and I have a great job, but I always remember being in special education. It could have ruined my life, but I survived and made it.
Special education IEP IDEA has no civil rights protection, the Section 504 and ADA have a civil rights protections.
okay you know what, I was in a type of special ed class called an ssc class, I’ve been going there since 2nd grade and I’m pretty sure I won’t get out of it until 8th grade. I feel stupid to be in that class, also ssc classes are for literacy and math only, literacy is easy, a few months ago we all read a book called “bridge to terabithia” and 2 other kids (a 6th grader who is autistic, and my friend) got separated and had to read a book called ricky ricada or something. I also remember one of my locker buddies asked my FRIEND (the one who read the Ricky ricada book) what 5x5 is, he was like, “uh 15? Wait no 10!” then my locker buddy said “well no, the answer is 25.” then my friend went into the classroom so my locker buddy asked me “what does he learn in that class??” i feel great that he’s also interested about how ssc works! I also get DIFFERENT TESTS from others just cuz I’m an ssc student and what I will learn will be “too complicated” but one good thing is that my ssc teacher is so sweet! she’s very understanding too! and one last thing, both of the ssc and my regular class had to do a test, our class had a test that was 1 page long, and no backside, WELL AS FOR MY NORMAL CLASS, HAD SUCH A LONG TEST THEY NEEDED TO FINISH IT AT THE END OF THE DAY. so yeah, and ssc classes FINALLY end at the end of the year in grade 8 (unless your lucky enough to be in a normal class in the middle of the year) I might fail highschool cuz we learn so differently from the regular classes, but like I might be able to be in a normal literacy class! I can finally be like a normal person, and I don’t have a disability anyway

Welll im in a special school where its more of a special dumping ground for really violent kids and its ment to be for kids who are average or above average in learning ability with special needs like trauma and ptsd
I am a special education teacher and the truth is we are so strangled by laws, documentation, and paperwork we can never devote all the time and attention we would like. I never reveal I am a Sped teacher or tell the kids they are in a sped class, especially when I do co-teaching with a Gen Ed teacher. We work with every kid - both sped and Gen Ed so no one is singled out. Once kids learn I am a sped teacher they ostracize me, won’t let me help and say things like “I’m not a retard…” so I keep my mouth shut. In my opinion we are all “special Ed” because we each have our own unique way of learning - and my job is to find out what that is for each kid and adjust accordingly. Sped makes me feel like an outcast as well, and we are often treated like second class teachers by our colleagues- some of whom shove a kid your way and say “you deal with this…” I do love my job - and my kids, but “sped” stigmatizes us all and that in the end serves no one…

I was in special ed from the time I was in third grade until I was in 12th it's a very segregated system I would not wish this on anybody I have hemiparesis I am a brain damage victim but that being said I tend to try to catch up with pretty much anybody in my own capacity and I don't think that segregating a bunch of students because of their inability to do something is the right thing to do
Ugh, I have Essential Skills Development (Which is a supervised study hall with assistance) which is for kids with *specific learning disability* . I don't have a learning disability. And in my IEP meaning they suggested me to be in an AP class. How odd is that?
Update: 10 months ago from as I am writing this comment, I was placed into a Social Skills classroom that I hate.

I remember my 8th grade math teacher (special Ed) read us a book most of the time and i failed that class, like come on now my math teacher and it was only class I failed but I made it to high school through the hard work of summer school tryed out the for the football team and got kicked out because of failing 8th grade math. I’m in the 10th grade (Sophomore Year) and I have add, and a learning disability. My teacher Mrs. Evans care for her students like me, and unlike my online teacher Mrs. Ventress. My friend Kayleigh told me that the reason she didn’t like her was because she was mean to her or something like that. I hate her, and I wish she wasn’t a teacher at all.
