if you spray paint them the ice and water or the caulking wont work as well or last as long

That is the cheapest plastic boot I have ever seen. Some of the newer plastic flanges are a lot more rigid. I admit that one you had was flimsy but not all of them are made like that

I disagree with painting them , i have never seen spray paint last even 10 yrs with the uv/wind/rain/ice abuse that roofs take. So no one is going to want to get up on their roof 5-10 times if they are getting a 50/yr roof just to repaint them , also if you get paint on the neoprene collar it can prematurely dry it out causing it to crack and leak. With your extencive work resume you must have come across the metal boots with the kynar baked finish that come in brow, black, green, tan that will be maintenance free for its lifetime. Sorry im going to have to be the thumb down i hope my point of view is helpfull

Shawn, thanks for the comment and the insight. We totally agree with what you're saying and buying boots that are already a color (we prefer black) is certainly the best option. What we were really referring to was the PVC plumbing vent pipe itself sticking out of the roof. To us, nothing is uglier than a brand new beautiful roof that has been installed and having those white PVC sticking out of it. What we typically do is hit them with sandpaper real quick then paint the plumbing vents with some heavy duty spray paint as we remove the old boots. You wouldn't believe the amount of homeowners who have complimented us for doing that in the past because it's such a minor detail, but makes a big difference.
Hopefully we can turn that Thumbs Down to a Thumbs Up!

I wouldn't use either. Bullet boots are the only thing we'll use.
