The Jitterbug - Cut from The Wizard of Oz

  • "The Jitterbug" was a song sung by Dorothy, together with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, that was cut from the soundtrack of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It was both a jazzy development of the plot and a nod to the then-popular bobby-soxer dance craze. As the song begins, the four friends see a jitterbug flitting in the shadows from tree to tree and become frightened. The Jitterbug puts a magical influence on the characters, forcing them to dance the Jitterbug frenetically. Soon there are many jitterbugs, and eventually, everyone collapses from exhaustion and are subdued by the Witch's army of flying monkeys.
The Wicked Witch of the West makes reference to this number in the finished film, telling the leader of the monkeys that she had sent "a little insect to take the fight out of them", a line that is perhaps the most obvious continuity error in the film. The original Baum novel has no reference to Jitterbugs, but the Wicked Witch sends out a swarm of bees to sting Dorothy and her friends to death in Chapter 12, an attack that is thwarted by the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman.
The song was restored in various stage versions of The Wizard of Oz, including the 1942 Muny production and 1987 RSC version. It does not appear in the 2011 West End version.

Idk why this has such a creepy and unnerving quality to it and I kind of love it. It sounds like being on a nonstop carousel that won't let you off which is fitting considering it's about a spell the witch casts to make them dance forever

I remember back in 1995-96 when I was like 5 or 6 seeing this on an extended version of the wizard of oz at a friend's house. I had seen the original movie a bunch of times before. I was absolutely terrified of this for some reason. There was also a video showing different makeup versions of the tin man while his theme song played. I think they were just showing different designs of the character. There was one in particular that scared the living hell out of me. Let's just say I was sleeping in my parents bedroom that night lol.

I used to look at both all the time, and to this day they still mess with me in my subconscious I think hahaha. There was also a deleted song where Dorthy sings 'Over the Rainbow,' and that, combined with the set photos, terrified me too.

Between this cut, the removal of Dorothy's tearful 'Over the Rainbow' moment near the crystal ball, and the removal of the 'Hail Hail the Witch Is Dead' reprise returning to the Emerald City, the film as a whole is completely front-loaded for musical numbers. There are no songs after 'The Merry Old Land of Oz' in the finished film. I notice that the stage version performed by high schools nowadays (the Royal Shakespeare Company version, I think) restores at least this number to the act, and makes more of the Winkie march, which balances things a little better.

      Some very good observations.
For me personally, and despite its appeal, I think they made the right call in cutting it. It's too weak plot-wise, and too far removed from the main theme. I also think they definitely made the right call in removing the Over the Rainbow reprise. It's really rather too depressing and upsets the balance with the positive energy.
I do strongly agree it's too abrupt a transition back to the wizard without at least a bit of celebrative music. However the biggest mistake was cutting the extended Scarecrow number - very stupid decision. But at least you can splice that scene into your own copy.

Yes, it is a shame. TCM app is playing this movie currently, just caught the last half, and in the interview with Bob Mankiewicz, the music historian lady mentions the Jitterbug dance they deleted from final version. Guessing one of film crew caught this side shot of it, shame because the dancing is so nicely choreographed, Judy’s singing just beautiful as always, thinking of alllllllllll the time and hours of learning the steps, all for nothing. Nothing. The public will never see this, it is a shame, because now it is and should be a ‘right of passage’ as Bob Mankiewicz says ... I just am making the kids (gently coaxing;) to watch these movie classics so they will be enriched with the knowledge and history of true classic Americana cinema... that they will know the best movies of all time were the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, the great directors, Billy Wilder, Michael Curtiz (whom I would never know if it weren’t for the TCM app), Alfred Hitchcock (many of his early films are excellent plus Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, etc)... funny thing, the audiences back in the day were crazy not to love ❤️ movies like “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, “Wizard of Oz”, both box office bombs, yet now they are hailed as two of the best all time movie classics.

This behind-the-scenes footage wouldn't really be adequate for a full restoration because it contains extraneous elements (the dancing apple trees, seen from behind), it doesn't show the 4 performers from the front (the way they were shot for the real movie), but mostly because this amateur film does not show the entire musical number.

this is not the actual audio from the sound track as it is just the radio airplay album juke box version. the original soundtrack has dialog as the scarecrow tries to rescue toto from the grabbing trees and the trees are growling at Dorthey who then asks the tin man to rescue toto. there is a black and white copy that was used to orchestrate the soundtrack that still exists

I am glad this was cut. Oz was supposed to be other-wordly and the jitterbug was a contemporary American dance craze very much of its time. It really places the movie in a very specific time and place. It ruins the feeling of Oz. Having said that, it's a great shame the footage wasn't kept. I know back in those days they did not forsee the longevity of movies, and then VHS, dvds, etc. But it's still a shame it wasn't preserved.

Judy's singing was just wonderful in this film clip !!
I can see why the dance scene was cut because it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the film.
Yet, on the other hand with this scene cut it doesn't explain why the lion has a butterfly net, the tin man a gun, and the scarecrow a mallet, after they leave the castle.
The one area of the film that I thought could have been reworked is near the end when Dorothy throws water from a bucket onto the Scarecrow and it accidentally splashes the witch.
I thought a hose connected to the castle wall would be a more realistic scenario than just the bucket sitting all by itself.
A great film and all of the actor's did their very best with the limited technology in 1938( Film released in 1939 ).

The jitterbug scene was going to be in the haunted forest right before the flying monkeys. If you listen closely to the scene before, the witch says: “I’ve sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them.” However, this video is not the original deleted scene, it was just rough cut of a rehearsal, you can obviously see the man coming out of the tree costume. The original scene is lost forever, say for a few production stills.
