Love those upside down boats! Thank you for sharing this, Lou! I was born in 70 and Grandma Taylor, my momma's momma, drove a green boat tail. I think I received a whoopin with a wooden spoon on the front seat of one of these beautiful Buick's when I was about 4. I'm positive I deserved it because I still love this car!

My folks traded in their 67 Electra 225 2dr hdtp on a 72 Riviera the same color as this with a buckskin color vinyl top. It had front buckets and an AM/FM radio with an 8 track player. They picked it up at the Chicago dealership and I got to drive it home to Peoria. It was one of the few Buicks they had that Mom never wrecked.

I remember the '69, '70 and '71 Rivieras. The '69 was beautiful, the '70 was a disappointment, then the '71 boattail. I never thought Detroit could make a car that distinctive and sharp. It rivalled my favorite cars at that time, the Toronado and the Thunderbird. The Riviera was in a class by itself with the '71, '72 and '73.

The boattail definitely ranks among the most distinctive cars of all time. Not everyone liked the look at the time, and some Buick dealers weren't thrilled with it either. Sales didn't measure up to their forbears, so the later Rivieras became more conservative, but those didn't sell any better, though that was owed mainly to the fuel crisis. But the boattails are getting more appreciation today, and they definitely reflect the creativity of the great Bill Mitchell. He was a master designer blessed with the gift of creativity like his mentor Harley Earl, and GM and its fans then and now are eternally grateful to have had him. Thanks for spotlighting this fascinating automobile.

WOW Lou, does that Riv's vicious 455-ci 4-bbl dual exhaust ever have a menacing GRRROWL to her! I can still recall the very first time I ever saw the magnificent *1971 Buick, Riviera... I was riding in my father's 1970 Winnebago motor home from Illinois to Arizona with my uncle when we rolled up on that awesome boat-tail rear end, what a view I had from up in that Winnebago too! I was awestruck by it's beautiful exotic styling! I announced to my uncle Jim, "Oh my god, THAT'S BEAUTIFUL!... One day I'm gonna get me one of those!"* Here we are over 50 model years later and I still don't have one! Perhaps Mr. Hall will take pity on me and sell me his? 👀 I'd even pay the original sticker price of $6,468.26! Seems more than fair to me. lol. Great stuff, Lou! Thank you.

My friend had one and we used to car pool together to work. One time he let me drive it the 28 miles to work. Even though the car was very worn, (torn seats, over 120K on the odometer, full of bondo, and paint mostly gone), I was amazed on how comfortable the suspension was. In addition, for a big luxury car, it handled pretty good on the interstate. Great car and very reliable. Would love to own one if I had the money and storage for it.

But the song is not about a Riviera. Just a tricked out big car in the 70s, Mac style. It could have been the after-market stuff some folks did to the back windows of their big cars to create a diamond effect.

My uncle owned one of these. Bought it new. I remember how much I always
liked the looks of that car. It has an ultra smooth ride but was quicker
then one might think with that 455 V8. My uncle's car had bucket seats and
a console shifter if memory serves. What was funny was that his other car was a VW bug.
