On "My Car Story" we're in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago on 11-30-16.
We're looking at a 1971 Buick Riviera GS Gran Sport in Vintage Red Paint with a 455 engine.
We’re talking with the Owner Debbie Powless. Debbie shares she became a Buick Fan when her Grandfather gave her his Buick Electra 225 which he kept is excellent condition. Since that gift, she always liked Buicks.
One day at a car show she saw a 1970’s Buick Riviera and thought that is the car she wanted. She searched and found this one and purchased it in 2014. She then restored the car, and now she’s achieved her dream car that she drives with us today.

Even 45 years later, that model Riviera still impresses.
Agreed. Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
You ain't lying hell I'm ashamed that I barely found out about this car last week 👀
Ah but is it realiable
It sure does
@@homeromaldonado1938 omg. Dude. That was the coolest car GM ever made. The 70 and 72 as well. The ones above 72 began to lose their style when plastic started to replace metal. My aunt had the 455 amd posi rear end and I used it a lot. Burned the back tires with ease lol. It would leave everything but a gas station. ⛽
Riv's are so under appreciated. Styling was futuristic and still is today.
My grandson calls the Boattail the Batmobile! I like the shot that Lou got with the trunk open and it actually looks like an eagle.

That is a beautiful classic car , i had a 73 and i regret to this day trading it in . I worked at Buick dealership in 1985 and the one i bought was a one owner with very low mileage.

You have perfect vision :-)
I see that too 😏.
Bellissimo! Bellissimo! 😘
one of the coolest looking cars of that decade.
Exactly
The legend behind why people get these cars is just as important as the car. Her grandfather had an 1966 Electra is lengedary.
HI Oldschoolhiphop, You're right about the "Why?" they have them. I believe you're going to enjoy MANY of the Car stories on the Channel, Lou
I had a 73 Riviera with the same body style. Best car I’ve ever had. The 455 cu. was a great engine.

This is the first video I saw of yours. Hooked that moment. What a beautiful car!
Nice! Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
I had this EXACT car--colors, GS, options...but sold around 91 in Detroit. This is a beautiful restoration! Mine had about 175,000 miles on it and wasn't nearly this clean at the end. The shape of this trunk made it very difficult to load larger items.

Lou Costabile Thanks for sharing this video. I was 11 years old in 1971, I like this 71 Buick Riviera GS in Vintage Red the color looks nice I wish General Motors in this generation would bring back this same style of Buick I'd run to the dealership and buy one but they probably would have to modify the specs of this generation to make it work.

Top ten greatest designs of all time! Lucky you getting to see it and go for a ride Lou! That is a sweet car- PERFECT GEM! Expensive to fill up now with about 10 mpg! lol! GM really took risks even as late as '71 with that boat tail! Crazy over- the top- it was all about STYLE! Now it's cool to have a all blacked-out out box, yuk! Hope you are good Lou! Thanks for showing us the amazing brochures and selection charts-- sooooo cool to see them, Love it!
High praise for this design 247jimbo :-)
I have a 1973 Riviera by Buick. It's such a fine automobile. One of my favorite in my collection.

Nice to have it, I agree.
Even more unique it's a 455 Riviera GS 👍💯💯
Bonus big motor on this one :-)
That is a absolute outstanding vehicle. Whomever she let do the complete restoration spared no expense and Im sure it was quite the expense. She is in Chicago with me.

I would own this and a few more! love them!
Happy to read you "love them!" :-)
Elegante auto, me encantaba. Nunca le tomamos fotos, lamentablemente.

OH! The sound of that buzzer!!! When she was in the driver's seat.... And, that 455 is such a strong motor. Memories of my childhood. Thanks Lou
Hi Chuck, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) You're welcome, Lou
I no longer have the car but I am so thankful that Lou did this video because I enjoy watching him describe the car. The comments are fun to read also! It is the only restoration project I have ever done and I am so proud of how it turned out. FYI I now have a 1964 Jaguar XKE roadster and a 1954 Kaiser Darrin.

Hi John, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Another one! I just watched two of your other productions about the truly magnificent '71 bot tail Buick, Riviera GS and this one is a very unique one; being restored back to original condition and all. The brushed aluminum dash is a nice touch for the GS. I need to stop reminiscing, get down to business and find me one of these gems before I die! It's a bit more difficult finding one of these since I live in Europe now, but where there's a will... Thanks, Lou you, these productions have given me the push I needed to make the decision to buy one of these precious ole Buick's and fulfill one of my childhood dreams!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read the videos have inspired you :-) Hope you're behind the wheel of the right car for you soon, Lou

Wow! Truly a dream car for me. 71-72 Riviera GS (Stage 1 a bonus) to have and drive would make for a bigger smile on my already smiling face. She has a keeper with that ride and I love the vintage red color.
Hi Gene, Thank you for your wonderful comment on this car :-) Lou
What a gorgeous car. I used to have a '71 too, with factory dual exhaust & factory posi rear end. That was many years ago & sure wish I never sold that car. Thanks Lou and Debbie, I really enjoyed it!!!
Hi Howabouthetruth, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
I owned a virtual twin to this car back in the mid-seventies. I traded a 69 Riviera for it. They were like two totally different cars. I owned a 66 years later and liked that one the best of all three.
Hi Dave, Happy to read you had one like this too :-) Lou
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful !!!...
High praise :-)
this whole video and you didn't even honk the horn. wow, just WOW.
Musta missed that one....
I had this exact model, except it was gold with a white vinyl roof.
One day I was visiting a client and when we were done he accompanied me outside where I had the car parked in front of his bakery. As he was a South African immigrant, he knew nothing about American cars. He sort of gasped when he saw it and asked what it was. After I told him he said, "IT LOOKS LIKE A ROCKET !!! Well I don't think it does, but like the boat-tail Corvette from the same designer, it does look like it's moving fast, even when standing still.
Hi Brian, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Hi macphail1964, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Regarding "bringing this video', it's my pleasure. I hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Indeed!
I had a 71 Riviera new in back in 71. It was driven from MA. to CA. over 3000 mi. It took only 3 days, I think I may have set a record but that was unimportant to me. What I enjoyed the most was the way it flattened the mountains as I traveled across the country. It was like sitting in y living room!
Good times, good times :-)
Very nice example of the desirable Riviera GS. Funny thing about those boat tails is you don't find many people that straddle the fence on its design; people either really love it or really hate it.
H Michael S Pastorius, Glad to read you're one of the people who enjoy this one :-) Lou
Lou Costabile - they're iconic. My brother is currently restoring a '73 (not a GS, though) Riviera. A true survivor with only 80K original miles, no rust.
Clearly a wonderful car to restore, and lots of fun :-)
nice one Lou, the exhaust note sounds like the echo cans my brother-in-law had on his 59 ford.
Glad you enjoy the sounds coming from this car :-) Me too.
Congratulations to you both, thanks for posting. I just love the 1971-73 Rivieras and it's the first time a GS in such a spectacular condition cames around . Salute from Brazil!
Hi Fabio, You're welcome. Happy to read "I just love the 1971-73 Rivieras" :-) Salute from USA! Lou
A thoroughly delightful video on all counts: Debbie is charming and fun, she knows how to drive her car well and enjoys it. Fabulous car in the right hands!
Hi JSD HK, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Agreed the right person with the right car, Lou
Absolutely beautiful!!...she was gorgeous then and still is today. Class in everyway!! THX Lou! :-)
Hi Ed B. Well said :-) Lou
I'm jealous. It doesn't get any better than a 71 GS That is the car that got away. My uncle had one and back in 81, I was a junior in HS, and I thought I was going to buy it but he let a salesman talk him into trading it in on a new Regal. It was gold and that color isn't my favorite but it was beautiful and the interior was like new and we were a Buick family. Other guys liked sports cars,to me THAT was a sports car. ☹️ I'm still pissed about it. Finding a 71 GS is impossible.
Hi Don, Happy to share this "sports car" with you :-) Think you'll enjoy this video too, Lou ruclips.net/video/GxY-WFrQ1Xk/видео.html

I had a 1973 Buick Riviera. White with royal blue interior and 1/2 vinyl roof. They did some front and back changes to the 73's that made it a little less dramatic than the 71 & 72. On the 73, the rear bumper was changed and smoothed somewhat so the point on the rear was smoothed out and flattened more and didn't extend past the rear bumper so the 73 wasn't really a boat tail any more per se. Also the vents on the rear trunk were gone. On the front, the turn signals were moved from the front bumper to the sides of the headlights. Car would easily spin the rear wheels from take off if you put your foot in it. Those big blocks are torque monsters that produce all thier torque below 2000 rpms. 12 mpg highway though, Lol. There was a little red light on the fuel gauge that would come on when the gas was low. Beautiful example in this video. Makes me wish I didn't get rid of mine.
Hi Jim Seeber, Glad to read this video brings back memories of yours :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thanks. I bought my 1973 Riviera in 1984 for $1000 down in Georgia. Was in very good shape. All original. Even had the original 8 track player in it. Geez, when I think what it would be worth now. Wasn't the GS, it was a lower trim, with cloth seats and (the original) hubcaps, but still .....
Almost all I can say, Lou, is "WOW;" but the old Buick's had awesome, trend-setting designs and for many years so iconic. As a kid I remember my Grandfather's 37 Terraplane which he had for many years. Mother's first car was a Ford roadster, then when she married my Father they bought a Chevy, Plymouth, then their first of many Buicks. My Dad took me to the dealer's to see the brand new '59's when they first appeared and I don't think I my jaw relaxed for 2 weeks afterward. I will never forget my Uncle's 65 silver (w/black top) Riviera GS. The Rivieras' were almost orgasmic; no almost for some people, lol. Thanks for all the gr8 videos!
Hi hbsteve77, Glad you like this one :-) Thank you for sharing the story of your families great cars! Lou
An iconic shape, designed when car companies weren't afraid to step outside the comfort zone in order to produce something truly spectacular. I liked this vintage red Riviera so much I watched the video three times ! Nice to see all that documentation in the trunk, too.
Hi Andrew Graham, Nice to read your thoughts as you share a comment. Glad you enjoyed this one several times :-) Lou
Now THIS is the one to have! Right options, right color and interior even the 1971 dual stripe whitewalls! What a beautiful car! Shows pride of ownership! I’ve owned two 65’s and a 69 and I would love to own this one !
Hi Craig Jorgensen

Hi JackF, I enjoy the women enthusiast too. The Ladies are definitely on this Channel sharing their love for their cars :-) Lou
Gotta be the nicest Boat-tail I've ever seen. Brand new! A hot-rod in a tuxedo. Well done Debbie! Lol, you guys were flying on that little road. Thumbs up.
Hi Michael R, Yes, a well done restoration, it's like being at the showroom this car is so clean. We make sure when on a drive or ride we stay within the posted speed limit and stay in the legal limits of the law .... :-) Lou
Michael R thank you so much the restoration was a lot of work and a bigger project then I ever expected but the guys who did the body and paint were great, also the polisher was an amazingly talented man and made "dinged" up wheel well trim and other trim pieces look like brand new. That boat does look like it was flying but again we were driving the speed limit ;)
Debbie thank you! I say without apologies that I can spot the "half-baked" restorations rather easily. Many people once they are confronted with the cost of doing it properly will start cutting corners. It's refreshing to see one with no questions, no apologies. Restoring cars correctly is a money losing (usually, lol) exercise in patience , love, pride, respect.... All that. And knowing when to say when. You two could have been talking about the moon landing for all I know, lol. The car speaks for itself. Thanks again, Debbie.
How I'd love to have one, jacked in the back with mag wheels. The 71-73 Rivieras were the ONLY bad-ass cars ever made, IMHO.
1971 the dealer told us the trunk vents were part of the new flow-through ventilation system. That's all I remember from age 11.
Hi Richard, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dealer visit :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
The rarest 71 Rivera was the Sun Coupe only 300! Made ....I had one it was incredible...Electric Sunroof before any other GM car

My first car, '71 Riviera. I had the same color, except the vinyl roof was only the back 1/3 of the roof and it was a maroon paisley print. Wish I had a picture, it may not sound it, but it looked pretty cool. Was able to get it up to 120 a few times. Even some unintentional off-roading. Had a very smooth ride, very solid. Loved watching the sunset bounce off the huge hood of that car.
Hi Rick Reid, Good times, good times :-) Lou
Good to see someone appreciate it. More than anything though, that *dealer book* (5:04) brought back memories of how the sales process was done for so, so many years. Kind of made me nostalgic.
Hi Matt from Florida, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the former sales process :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
What a sweetheart of a Lady.
Riviera and Toronado always favorites. Dad bought 79' Riv off the showroom floor. Black with grey velour and grey carpet with white vinyl on panels. So classy it was
Hi Paul Arthur, Glad I videoed a favorite, and thank you for sharing your Dad's 79 Riv story :-) Lou
Thanks so much Paul Arthur for the kind comments! That is cool that you remember your dad buying such a great classic off the showroom floor!!
I am an auto restorer and have a 1971 Rivi of my own. Though NOT as nice I do consider it to be a work in progress. I'll show it when the time is right. That is when i start the body work. And YES it is an awesome car.

Those springs should support that hood. This car was built in the day when gas station attendants put the fuel in, didn't matter to the customer where the filler cap was located. Notice that nowhere on the exterior does it say Buick. That's because Buick referred to this line as Riviera by Buick and it was marketed that way. It is a very cool car and I hope she enjoys it for many years. It looks and sounds like it just left the dealer show from. 👍
Hi Terri Bel Bliss, I did not notice that it does not say Buick on the outside. Interesting, thank you for pointing that out, Lou
Lou Costabile By the way, this is true of all the Riviera series, they were always referred to as Riviera by Buick. That was the script on the dash of my 97.
Terri, you are correct the emblem on the back above the taillight says "Riviera and in MUCH smaller letters under it "By Buick"...I had never noticed that. The steering wheel has BUICK painted in silver. Interesting catch!!
I think the steering wheel has Buick on it because it may have been used in other models.
BTW I have a 72 Riviera
My favorite GM car of the 70s! This looks so unique (especially the butt), and my favorite Buick too!

Great car. Great color! My brother worked with a guy who had a Riviera. I dropped him off at work a couple of times, and always admired the "boat tail". Years later, I owned a 71 Toronado and my brother had a 71 T bird. Both were "beak mobiles". Must have been a thing in the early 70s. Hope this Riviera is still going strong!

I remember seeing these on the roads as a kid. I thought the design was really weird at the time. My initial impression was you didn't know if it was coming or going. Now, looking back, I see this automobile as a beautiful piece of art. I loved cars back then, but I was still a bit young to understand the reality of how cool cars were back then. Sure I had favorites, like my Father's '69 428 cj Mustang, but I was too young to really appreciate the amazing time and effort that went into designing some of the truly amazing cars of the day. Great video!! :thumbs up:
Hi tscooter22, Amazing thing about cars is they seem to get better looking with age, Lou

Wow, love this one too, Lou, to me it's one of the last awesome classics!! I honestly believe that the "early" 70's was the end of an era for classic cars, and they seemed to make the most of it, too! I remember as a kid I used to go to the car dealers and get these brochures on the new models coming out, I think sometime in the mid 60's when I did this, (I'm getting too old to remember much anymore LOL) it was fun and got to see an awful lot of beautiful brand new vehicles too! It, indeed was a fun hobby I really enjoyed!
Hi mouse lee, High praise for this classic :-) Lou
Buetiful Riviera lovely mid western lady all class

Another classic GM giant I wish I had. I loved those boat tail Rivieras. very nice ride and I loved her smile at the end of the video. She has a great car and she knows it!
Hi jnucci1, Glad you enjoyed this one. Agreed, a great car and you're right, Debbie is enjoying her car. Glad that comes through :-) Lou
Debbie ain’t no VW drivin’ mama. She likes dem big boats.😃👏👍
She's got a nice big ride :-)
I love these Buicks. Even the earlier models were elegant gentlemen's sports cars.
Hi Dave, Happy to read "I love these Buicks" :-) Lou
Back in high school this was the car I wanted. Never got there
Nice to see some dreams come true for others. Very nice car for that era
Hi Glad you are able to remember the car desired back in High School with this video :-) Lou
One of the last artistically designed cars drawn by hand, the console and shifter so rare and so unique. The sights and sounds of the drive reminded me what it was like to drive these big boats years ago. I could almost smell the vinyl and carpets. Truly stunning. And the owner is so nice!
Hi Bluto Blutarsky, Glad you enjoyed the design of this one :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Amazing car. I used to see one sitting in a neighbors yard growing up and I used to fawn over that rear end and window. Still love the design to this day.

A truly classy lady with a truly classy Buick - one of my all-time fave Buicks, '71 best of this era (what a colour!🤩) And Lou, a classy presenter; who could ask for anything more?
Hi Arne, Win / Win :-) Appreciate the kind words, Lou
That was the coolest car GM ever made!!❤ the 70 and 72 as well. My Aunt had a 70 that was gold with the brown vinyl top and a light brown leather interior with the Buick mags. She lent it to me a lot and asked me why the back tires were always the ones needing to be replaced lol.

While my car was in for repair, I was able to drive a Buick just like this for 2 weeks. Starting the engine, you could watch the gas gauge race towards empty. I couldn’t afford to own this lux beast.
Hi M H, Happy to read you had a fun drive in a Buick like this :-) Lou
My goodness. Always been my favorite American car. There is nothing like it.

Hi Lou I always enjoy your videos! I'm not the biggest fan of the Boattail Riviera but I admit it looks very muscular, especially at the rear fenders. I do like the 1963-65 Rivs but my favorite Buick of all time is the 1966 Skylark GS. Keep up the good work Lou!!
Hi gojoe283, Thanks for viewing and sharing the cars you enjoy. Appreciate the kind words :-) Lou
