Joffery would've been worse than Aerys II, feels like the only reason he's placed lower is only because he happened to die before he got worse but he always had potential to be crueler than Aerys II. At least one of them wasn't born crazy since Aerys II slowly descended into madness while Joffery showed signs of a psychopath from the start.

He could've been a mix of Aerys II and Maegor "The Cruel" if he grew up and ruled Westeros without Tywin as a babysitter. He might've ended up like the real life King Edward II of England or Richard II of England or Charles I of England and Scotland. At that point, the entire continent would've risen up against Joffrey and The Lannister-Tyrell Alliance.

  • @ndep93
    @ndep93 2 года назад +193

From seeing him in the show, Robert Baratheon just came across as tragic and stuck in the past. His dialogue always had mention of times gone, the good ol' days. Past battles, growing up in the Eyrie with Ned and Jon Arryn, his many sexual conquests, and Lyana Stark. He never focused on what was happening around him, and the only current event he paid any attention to was Daenerys's status due to his hatred for the Targaryens after Rhaegar's deeds. Additionally, Robert was a great warrior, but what's the warrior to do when there's no more battles to be fought? A great warrior, a good friend, in different circumstances, perhaps a better husband and father, but he could never let go of the past.

"Twin" siblings that contain one male and one female can never be genetically "identical". Identical twins come from one sperm and one egg that split into two separate individuals early on in the pregnancy and are always the same sex because of that. Fraternal twins are from two eggs, one egg each, so they are basically siblings that just happened to share their mother's womb at the same time. They are no more genetically identical than you and your older/younger brother/sister if you have one that you share the same two parents with. I like the idea that you can tell how popular a king was by how often his name is used afterwards. This is very true of British monarchy:
After Richard III, (twisted nephew murdering usurper) no more king Richards
Henry, very popular name, until Henry VIII (six wives; divorced, beheaded, died, divorced beheaded, survived) then no more king Henry's
George - very popular, have gone up to George VI, and, should Charles ever become king, he may rather be known as George VII rather than Charles III (considering what happened to Charles I).
King John I - Only one King has ever had the name John in the whole of British monarchy, which tells you how popular King John was, and how bad a job he did.

Robert doesn’t deserve to be on this list. Robert knew his failings as a king and employed skilled, able people to counteract his shortcomings. He was also an inspirational and loved ruler, with great lords revering him and the smallfolk deifying him, he was the Great Stag, the Demon of the Trident, and he was the rightful king.
    His two failings at ruling:
    1. Plunging the realm into debt,
    2. Not knowing his children were incestuous bastards,
Were not HIS fault. Littlefinger is a man who is nearly magical with his ability to summon coin, and Aerys left the coffers of the Red Keep overflowing. The issue isn’t Robert’s spending, it’s Littlefinger’s scheming and debt scandals. He invested the money to make himself personally richer and actively sought to sew chaos into the realm. This was known to NO ONE, and it isn’t Robert’s, but Littlefingers, to keep track of finances, especially in an economically and agriculturally prosperous and wealthy period.
The bastards, you could argue, were a severe oversight. But, then again, that was an issue with his councillors. If Jon Arryn, Stannis Baratheon, or Ned Stark simply told Robert, the issue would be resolved. Gruesomely? Probably. But the issue wasn’t with Robert, but with his advisors.
Under Robert Baratheon, there was over a decade of peace and plenty in the realm, and while he is nowhere near as diligent a king as Jaehaerys I, and definitely had severe and glaring shortcomings, he does not deserve to be put with the likes of Maegor and Aerys.

yes but those failings were disastrous. ruined all the short term gains he made when he took the throne.
how exactly was it not his fault he was a shitty husband and father? thats most certainly his fault. he should have been able to see Cersei's evil and take steps to deal with it instead of shutting off his senses and mind to drink and whoring.
people loved robert but for all the wrong reasons (him being friendly to fellow warriors and hunters, being a famous fighter and commander and conqueror, good looking in his youth). not for the actual reasons you should love a king.
the "peace" you speak of? a powder keg just waiting for his death to explode everything into disaster. i do agree the WOFK is the fault of many other figures like Cersei and Baelish but Robert's flaws as a king, husband and father contributed as well.

Yeah it takes two to really fight but you can get beaten to sh*t if you don't to fight back. In the story princess and queen, it was told that the first person to die in dance of the dragons was some lord who refused to support Aegon and got killed immediately. And it was mostly gathering allies and sending messages before Aemond, Aegon's younger brother, killed Rhaenyra's son when they went to negotiate with the same lord. I wouldn't bend the knee to a man who disobeyd his father, stole from his sister and whose actions led to your son, his nephew, being killed by his other uncle. I just recently read that short story "princess and the queen" (or smth I don't remember exact name) and boy do I have some feelings about it.

That’s not quite true- there was a single namesake for each, Aenys & Maegor; before Aegon V acceded to the throne, there was debate over if someone ‘raised half-a-peasant’ as the lords derisively claimed ‘Egg’ was- serving as the squire of a hedge knight, should become king - & this was when Maester Aemon was quietly offered but refused the throne, & around the same time, a Blackfyre claimant named Aenys put himself forward- hoping to claim by peaceful means, what his forebears hadn’t in war.
And Aemon & Aegon V had a hated brother Aerion (definitely one the most psychotic of the Targs) who named his child Maegor.
When there was a succession crisis, young Maegor was briefly considered but just as quickly dismissed- because they feared, he could inherit his father’s madness (& also his youth would have meant a long regency)...

Without a ruler that inspired absolute fear from everyone in the kingdoms following Aenys, the Targaryan dynasty stood no chance. Aenys almost singlehandedly destroyed the dynasty, which would've sent the country into chaos and destroyed stability for the common people, and Maegor's ruthlessness was the only thing that kept the Targaryans in power, which in turn brings some stability into the realm. If you were to rank the worst US President, I would strongly rank Woodrow Wilson as the worst. He started the Cold War with a hot one by mismanaging the Russian Intervention (1918-1920), he brought Jim Crow to the Federal Government, he gave rise to the 2nd KKK, he started domestic surveillance at its worst, he invaded Latin America for funsies, he instigated a wartime prohibition, despite fighting against the Prohibition movement, he established the Federal Reserve (it's terrible in practice), he perverted liberalism, and I think I could go on, but you get the idea.

I would put balon in that list, the guy was a fanatic who was planning in pushing the north and the islands to the seven.
Also Robert didnt bankruppt the realm,Littlefinger did,Robert shouldnt be in that list,he reigned over a 16 year long reign with just one major war that was localized in a single region and ended fairly quickly, daeron should take his place since he caused the death of 50000 people at least by conquering dorne and failing to hold it

I do disagree with your jab at Trump, as it's not accurate when describing his presidency, nor character as a person, more so an app description of Obama or Bush. and mostly what a potential Bernie v Hillary presidential race would have looked like...just you know... fewer dragons lol. Nonetheless, I'm not trying to talk politics, just say I agree with your decision to put Robert as one of the worst kings. I think people just get so hung up on how he was characterized in mediums like the show that they forget just how bad he actually was.
