We played this in band, back in 1970-71. I played flute and piccolo. We took it to State and got a standing ovation at the end of the song! One of my favorite concert pieces ever! Still love Mr. McBeth's music. Thank you for putting this song here.
We played this in jr high back in 77-78. Seems like yesterday. For all you young ones, you will remember your jr high and high school band days. Enjoy it!
Kim Huckaby we were supposed to take this song to state contest and it is one of the hardest contests we would go to for band as a freshman band, freshman have never gotten above a 3 at this but apparently with our band we were looking good until corona virus hit. Now I’m trying to stay in shape with my instrument and I needed to hear it so I get it right.
What sets this song up is the Euphonium-Clarinet pairing at the beginning that leads to the Flutes taking over the melody with the Clarinets and the Euphonium backing to the counter melody. In my opinion....that is one of the (if not THE) best Woodwind/Brasswind pairings. Soprano Clarinet (in lower and mid range) and Euphonium.
I was fortunate to know him, and to live for many years in the same town, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. There he wrote music, and taught as a music professor at Ouachita Baptist University. He signed some original scores for my daughter to give to her band director at her high school in Florida. He lived just down the street from me, and his home was lovely. Dr. McBeth was a most kind, gracious, Christian man, with immense talent. God gave him a gift that he shared freely with us. Thank you.
Richard Robinson so nice to hear. He was a friend of my high school band director's. He conducted our honor band my senior year, and I got a chance to meet him and at with him. Such a nice person! He is the master of bandstration!
Dr. McBeth took me to lunch back in the 1970's at a music workshop in Bemidji, MN. I was a lowly first year teacher - but it was an experience I will never forget. Truly, he was a special man!
In 1983 my high school band played this tune, it's challenging for you clarinet players, especially at the 4:30 point, just relax and feel it and you'll be fine.
I was in 9th grade when my band played this at the district band festival. This was one of my favorite pieces and I could not remember the name of it for a while. I am glad for RUclips searches.
My sophomore year playing bass before finishing on snare my last 2 years. I couldnt read music so I played everything by ear. Can still memorize the whole musical score and each section!!
I played this in 1983 when I was in the 7th grade. Our middle school band killed it and we got a standing ovation. I played trombone. Interesting that the high school band director had us sight read this when I was a junior but it didn't sound nearly as good as when we did it as younger musicians. Thanks for the memories.
I was honored in my first years of teaching to have not only attended a band workshop with Dr. McBeth, but he treated me - just him and me - for a lunch. That is a memory someone 'small like me' was encouraged to move forward with my career - that was in 73 or so... it was in Bemidji, MN. He was a treasure, for sure! HIs music lives on, however, and I always think of that lunch whenever I play something he wrote.
My favorite composer of the late 20th Century. I performed and conducted many of his works over the years and had the privilege of meeting him during my college days. Truly a quality human being; his passing is a great loss to music.
This was one of our two entries at the Florida State Band Festival and Symphonic Contest in 1970. The event was held in Sarasota, Florida. This piece is so moving...thank you, Lord, for giving us Mr. McBeth who, through you, gave us this music.
I performed this also in 1970 at the North FBA Festival held in Tallahasse. The state contest had been devided between north and south Florida. A great time for high school bands in Florida. Sadly, I doubt we have a band in north Florida that could play this beautiful composition.
My sister plan this piece in the High School band back in 1980. I was two years younger than she was but this piece was a favorite to me as well. All of you replying have great taste. RIP MR. McBeth.
I played this song in 9th grade back in 1975. We scored perfect superior marks in district contest. One of my all time favorites. I played 1st clarinet. Not a difficult song, but very fun, powerful and well written
Abby C McBeth loved the sound of the horn and used it extensively in his compositions. You are fortunate your director has picked his music for your band. .
I sure will. I worked in the band department with Carl Albert for awhile and got to meet Mr. McBeth and the greatest band directors in the entire State of Texas, as well as the Cleveland Orchestra's wind section. Arthur Gurwitz was astounded when I went up and told him who was looking through the UIL Solos near the Choir Dept.! (Of course, he went down and they got "the GRAND TOUR!" ) lol
This is a song where you can catch people talking. The best thing i heard when the grand pause happened was "I fry mine in lard!" I barely could play after that.
Loved playing the beginning with the Clarinets (I played Euphonium in High School). My Band Director had me playing against 6 Clarinets (2 1st, 2 2nd, and 2 3rd).
love the trumpet 1 part at 3:00 favorite part of the song we played it as a soli part with 4 not a solo but still we had it for festival yesterday and got superior for it for our student conductor part!
We played this piece in high school, and on the night of the concert, we killed it. Not the piece. We all got up and murdered our conductor in front of the audience. One too many straws I guess.

Same here, at the exact time as yourself. Kudos!
Kim Huckaby Played it in 1973. One my favorites of all time.

We played it the same year. Waxahachie, TX. I played Baritone.

Steven Johnson I play euphonium and I agree with you the beginning is 💥🔥
No band student should EVER make it through middle school/junior high school without playing this piece.
I agree 100%. It is beautiful.

Some days, you just wanna hear Chant and Jubilo, and relive your junior high school band days.

i did the same on my euphonium. i will never forget my senior year because of it.
My freshman year of high school for me when I played this
I played this multiple times in my high school band in the late 90's/early 00's. Brings back a lot of memories.
I was in 9th grade when my band played this at the district band festival. This was one of my favorite pieces and I could not remember the name of it for a while. I am glad for RUclips searches.

But that brass section at 3:13 and 4:00 😍😍
As a clarinet this was my favorite song to play

Playing Triangle for this in the North Star Community Band
My favorite composer of the late 20th Century. I performed and conducted many of his works over the years and had the privilege of meeting him during my college days. Truly a quality human being; his passing is a great loss to music.

This is one of the most glorious things my ears have ever heard!
Playing the third clarinet in my band. I have to admit that it is one of my favorite prices that I have ever gotten in band yet.
My sister plan this piece in the High School band back in 1980. I was two years younger than she was but this piece was a favorite to me as well. All of you replying have great taste.
RIP MR. McBeth.
I am performing this for my concert band and we are going to play Mars as well.
Sad to learn of McBeth's passing. He was truly a great composer.
I played this song in 9th grade back in 1975. We scored perfect superior marks in district contest. One of my all time favorites. I played 1st clarinet. Not a difficult song, but very fun, powerful and well written
Playing first trumpet part in my schools wind ensemble. It sounds SO amazing. Just an over all beautiful piece

this is quite a memorable piece of high school band music.
I’m playing this on French Horn; it’s VERY helpful for me to listen to this. Thank you! :)
Abby C McBeth loved the sound of the horn and used it extensively in his compositions. You are fortunate your director has picked his music for your band. .
Alto saxophone and playing this in hand now...I live this song!!
Played this last year as a sophomore. Too bad we're not doing it again :(
Brings back memories of middle school band
2nd Trombone in my high school's concert band, best harmony with 1st trombones!
This is a very strong piece of music. I play the 1st flute part, and, though difficult at places (like 4:28 to the end), I love playing it.
Had to learn this whole thing in a day and a half.
How did you do it? This peice is a tuning NIGHTMARE
Such a shame he passed. We can remember him by playing his music, though.
I sure will. I worked in the band department with Carl Albert for awhile and got to meet Mr. McBeth and the greatest band directors in the entire State of Texas, as well as the Cleveland Orchestra's wind section. Stellar performance.

I play percussion with this song in my band
@Blasphemisaurusaoe3 - You and all at SMC as well! Comments such as yours may make it a reality - Thank you!!
The clarinet part at 4:30 was a pain in the butt
Clare Nicke its not really that hard
For some reason I didn't specify that my original comment is referring to a *Bass* Clarinet, which has a different part
I KNOW right?!
Oh, wait. BASS clarinet? Woops. The clarinet piece is just as hard though. But not at 4:30.
I play bass clarinet on this song currently, and i can completely agree haha, after a while i got used to it! Its a really fun song to play :)
I play the snare part any tips for the flams at 4:28 to 5:09?(it's my first year)

We played this piece in high school, and on the night of the concert, we killed it. Not the piece. We all got up and murdered our conductor in front of the audience. One too many straws I guess.
