We have a neoprene boot on our mast that was installed when we re stepped the mast (keel stepped) To protect it from UV we then wrapped the base of the mast with 4 inch wide black rigging tape. It looks awesome and adds another layer of protection. Might work on your mast as well ...SV Cariba
It's a good idea to keep a couple of those wax rings on board. You can use it to wedge in a hull crack if you are ever to hit something below the waterline. But buy the plain ones without the plastic inner piece, so you don't have to worry about removing that.
As a plumber and very familiar with wax rings, the problem is if the mast moves, the wax isn’t resilient ( won’t spring back) like a foam rubber would be
Anxious to see how Lewmar handles the warranty claim. I am in the middle of a restoration and my boat and I need 4 new hatches and 6 opening port lights. I had planned to go with Lewmar, but your problems have made me hit pause. Thanks for another great video.
We certainly wouldn't recommend the Ocean 70's if you can avoid them... They have sent us replacements at no extra cost, but the replacements also didn't work...
There is also a peel and stick rubber roofing you can use for that and you can use a huge clamp to hold it strong at the top and bottom. You can cut to size and It sticks real well, at least the stuff I have used. There are smaller rolls for windows that is basically the same too. I would worry about hot climates with the wax ring getting super soft.
Good tip of the wax. My issue with my hatch was the lock-down dogs. The threads seem to shed a small amount of oxide that binds on threads of the hand wheel. My advice is a small amount of inert grease on the threads.
I am not sure if a wax seal will be flexible enough to provide a good seal over the course of time and I would think it would crack in cold weather. However at $4 worth a try. If you are going to provide a cloth cover over it (white of course for the best reflective qualities) remember you can buy a can of Scotchgard waterproof spray to treat it with.
With the hatch leak check the camber across the deck. On our Celestial 48 it was greater than the Lewmar permitted value so I had to fit a teak subframe for the fore hatch so that the hatch sat flat. It’s been great for the last 6 years. The aft cabin hatch I fitted without the subframe and we have had leaking problems!
We thought this might be the problem, as Lewmar stated there is only a 1mm tolerance, but when we measured with a large straight edge after removing the first one, there was virtually no camber, nothing we could even measure and nothing close to a millimeter, so we're quite stumped.
try this blue skin it sticks two it self grate for around wire looks professional and it stretches find it in roofing stores real cheep should go over honey ring like a boot just clean the top and bottom edges all boats should have this on board
We actually ended up wrapping the wax in Flexseal to protect it a bit underneath the canvas cover. Probably an unnecessary addition, but it should last!
Great episode again. For the Lewmar hatch did you check if the hatch base was perfectly level? Any type of curve would cause a leak. For the mast seal had you looked into Spartite? It worked for me and has a proven track record.
We did check the camber after the first re-install and it was virtually completely flat - that was our worry as well, but we could decipher any curve. Heard great things about Spartite, but $$$!!!
Guys how about a video of what your renovations plans are so that we have an idea as to where you are how much is left and also that we can give you ideas as to how to deal with future repairs congratulations on selling your old boat (fingers crossed)

Isn't that the most frustrating thing. Spend all that money and get a piece of junk product. If you are not steaming mad I will be mad for you. I have Bomar series 100 cast aluminum hatches on my CD 36. They are 36 years old now and never leaked a drop. I am sure they are more expensive than the Lewmars you bought but in the long run maybe worth it. I presume you could not just throw those back at Lewmar and buy something else. Damned frustrating. Best of luck.
Must confess I have never tried them on a boat and a mast but for poles and pipes protuding from house roofs I have found dektites to give a good long lasting seal. Deks head office is in Australia www.deks.com.au but they have some sort of presence in the USA www.deksus.com though I don't know if the USA carry their whole product range. Save having to restep the mast, maybe one of their large retrofit products might be suitable.
Hey Guys.. Really hate to say negative but somebody needs to... I know what you're dealing with on those hatches. Not just a bad batch...They are indeed a junk product that Lewmar should have discontinued 20 years ago. If they're anything like the identical hatches that are supplied on 2000 era Catalinas, I'm afraid your frustration is just beginning. They will actually leak right thru the hinges as well along the edges you discovered. At the price point they come at, owners and dealers need a much better product. Really surprised that Lewmar still allows their name to be put on these. Keep your repair tools and materials handy.
Yes, we have had the hinge leaks as well.. Solved that part by replacing the gaskets with butyl. They actually told us that leaking thru the hinges is common...!!! Incredible considering they are such a big company that they know they have all these quality control problems..
We are sorry with the issues you have had with the ocean hatches. If you could please contact the Lewmar factory in the UK we would love to help get this sorted. Please contact Techsupport@lewmar.com Kind Regards Lewmar
Thanks so much for reaching out! That's actually the email that we've already been in contact with over the past several months. They've been relatively helpful, but our emails seem to have been routed to the US tech support, which seemed to have limited resources available. We'd be happy to call the UK factory, if you could send us a contact person, we'd be happy to reach out! Our email is admin@adventureadrift.com
I don't know.... 3-4 new hatches and they all leaked? I probably would have gotten my money back and tried to find better hatches somewhere else. Sounds like a shotty company to me. What if you had those leaks at sea? Not good! Y'all be safe!
Yes, we're been quite displeased... We would love to go for another make, but there is only one other brand that makes one in the proper size and it costs about 4 times the price! Despite the price difference, Lewmar is a big, reputable company, so we'd expect them to have a functioning product, but have been pretty dissapointed.
@@AdventureAdriftSailing If their product was reputable, you wouldnt have gone through so many hatches. I hope they remedy this for you all. Being out to sea is no place to be experiencing hatch leaks! Please be safe, y'all....

Love the wax ring idea. I also need to seal our mast like you did. Great tip I will use also. Thanks for sharing.

That is the weakness of using wax.

Wax ring is an old ftried and true technique. Great job!
Love the story in your vedio,s
I’m glad you can get some service with your Lewmar hatches, their support here in Australia is pretty shitful.
Fles Seal tape thats wide works real good as its self amalgamating.

Good grief, Penfold, those leaky hatches!
Great video, we have quite a few leaks to fix when we get back to the boat too :(
The problem with warranty work is they don’t compensate you for the labor. Uninstalling and reinstalling.
Sooooo true!

Just Curious how the wax ring will work in the heat of the tropics. You may have wax running down inside your boat.
dnmtorp agreed That worries me too. The advice came from another boat Owner so hopefully they had experience with in hot climate. 👍
Melts around 145F. Seems like a bad idea.

I think the liquid Flex Seal would work good on the mast boot

Glad to hear the positive review of the Bomars, we will keep it in mind! It's been a frustrating process for sure!
The best deal is not always the best deal,!
How does the wax act under the heat gun? Is it similar to candle wax? Can it handle life in Baja?
A bit more malleable than candle wax, but I don't know if it would go liquid like candle wax.
It looks like Lewmar has a major quality check problem. Better use Gebo hatches next time...
Unfortunately the only other make that fits our size is Atkins Hoyle, and much more expensive! But maybe worth it considering this alternative... haah
I hope you took the Bainbridge ferry to Seattle. 30 minutes fast.
Yep, it was a great ride, and such a good view!

Try eternabond tape buy it on Amazon
time to go to a different manufacturer
Loomar should come and install the hatches themselves. You have too much patience to accept a 4th hatch.
Wouldn't that be nice.... 🙄

It was surprisingly flexible in the cold! Quite sticky when heated up.

Hmmm... Not sure if superglue would work in UV exposure and also on a flexing surface. Maybe Sikaflex could do the trick.
