agree! we have a huge problem on the west coast of Canada with Derelict and Abandoned boats. Leaking toxins into the ocean and causing eco harm to marine life. So repurposing a used boat wins the day in our Green Boater community. kudos.
I'm 30 trapped in an 84-year-old body. Oh, to be young again and take on a project like this boat. What a joy to watch you guys finish a that project, use it and sell it. Great work. I look forward to your next boating adventure.
I'm with everybody else here. I dont care how much you made. Hopefully you made a fortune, but as an older person money comes and goes. Money in its own right doesn't make you happy, it just gives you freedom and choices (not always a guarantee to happiness). You're health is the most valuable thing.
As a life long boater, you guys are absolutely spot on with your assessment. In my opinion, only two kinds of people should own a boat, someone with an open checkbook, or someone who isn't afraid to get to work, and push beyond your comfort zone when necessary. I'm the latter and find it much more rewarding and fulfilling. Great work and a great experience. The knowledge gained in every project is impossible to put a dollar figure on, because it might be 30 years before you lean on that skill again.
Very true! I had a boat because I love to fish. The first two years were great. Few problems and lots of fish. Slowly though it turned into working on the boat more than fishing. Finally it was seemed I was a having to spend a grand everytime i wanted to use it to catch a few fish. It had to go.
I thought 89k was a DAMN EXCELLENT steal of a deal. The reality is, you two have the knowledge, experience, stamina, funds, & perseverance to get the most out of each situation.
I’m getting older and have collected a few bucks along the way, I’d rather be young and collecting experiences. You guys are really incredible people and I enjoy watching. It’s pretty clear when your time is up you will easily be able to say you lived life to its fullest and that will be worth more than any bank account!
Hi Guys. My name is larry. I’m the guy who sold you your first boat a Francis 26 from my Bayshore marina years ago. Glad to see you are still into the boat life.
Love how freaking transparent and sincere you guys are. Also: That was a dynamite background. Can't imagine any professional TV studio finding or making a better one. Love you guys.
I’ve had a 1980 Marine Trader 41 for 15 years. I’ve done upgrades and maintenance. Nothing is harder then boat work. The physical nature of it, the crazy cost for materials and the basic fixed costs of moorage. Also, boats deteriorate. The sun and rain do incredible damage overtime. Underneath things grow and eat your boat. And don’t forget the animals, seagulls shit on your boat, otters have meals and shit on your boats and low life’s and crooks break into your boat and expensive tradesman make mistakes. I’ve seen it all. So congratulations, keep living the dream while your young and have your health.
1000% worth it! I love the three of you. Let's not forget the uncounted hours of pleasure Mountain Myst will provide her new family. Paying it forward. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations. The reconstruction work you did on this boat was incredible. You took a piece of bad driftwood and make it into something anyone would be proud to own. The end result was really remarkable.
A complete refurb/refit of a boat like that will never be a wise financial decision. But when your livelihood depends on content, it makes perfect sense. I really enjoy the boat work videos and would much rather see that then what some of the other channels have done while waiting for their boats to be built. Good job guys
Glad you included the labour time in the numbers, so many people forget this, it's an important consideration and it always take much more time than you think it will.
This is how I see it.., you both are young and building memories of all the adventures you guys have done and doing so don’t look back and start others cause at my age I enjoy every moment so THANK YOU.., you three
I'm restoring my 1973 Grand Banks 36 while working a full time. I am very accomplished at boat work, mechanical and electrical in particular. However I am 66 YO and it is a LOOOOT of work. It takes tremendous perseverance. Congrats and best wishes to both of you.
Guys, you are a great example of how to get ahead in life. Enjoy the trip through life, you only get one way trip. LoL My wife (of 55 years) and I love your videos and won't miss one. Love Jetty
I love you guys. I would have guessed around $125k ish. But you can’t put a price on your experiences that you had because of the work you put in. Amazing once in a lifetime experiences that most people never have. Looking forward to seeing the new cat ! 🐱
It was a fun ride from start to now! I realized there was never going to be a "profit" in your endeavor, but the trip was priceless and you saved a boat and put her back into a family's life and they will get great pleasure from your work! Kudos to you both for being the adventurers you are! Much love and respect, Doc
They weren’t very transparent on the money they made off sponsorships and RUclips revenue. I’m guessing they made a killing in the end. Congrats either way.
Without RUclips and the other side money deals, the answer is "No. No it is not worth it" However, being young, hardworking, good looking and personable, those side items become possible and seems like a great fit for you guys. I love watching people with the aforementioned attributes and I'm glad we live in an age when it's possible for you to live your dream and for us to help (while being entertained).
I admit I was one of those that hoped you would have walked away from this “disaster” but I’m so glad you didn’t, you definitely made the right choice for you!
i spent 36 years maintaining my 57 foot Chris craft connie including an 18 month major refit and to me none of it was work it was just flat out fun for me and wow do i miss that boat and you guys will look back on all your boat work with major fond memories
I got to give you guys an A++ on this video. I love how you covered all the bases. The costs involved, the materials needed, the donated items, and last but not least the man-hours/woman-hours. Special props for all the things that offset working for less than minimum wage. All the special moments of your adventure are priceless. The way you summed up the experience and how so many fail was so powerful and informative. Well all I can tell you is I'm hooked. Looking forward to all the new projects.
Thanks so much Mike!! We wanted to make sure we covered all things that should be considered:) We had fun putting this one together! Hopefully it helps someone out there!
Thank you so much . I have lived in the pacific N,W,for 75 years and have done a lot of what you just did. Thank you for letting me relive my past thru your eyes
Not a project to make money, but…because those that do stuff like this, do it because of the adventure. Hopefully we all come out somewhat even after, deals, personal labour etc….a great series. Thank you!! 🇨🇦
It's such a joy to watch you guys living your dreams and pushing your limits!! Amazing example of teamwork and shared values and goals. Very inspirational!
Maybe I’m just getting old and sentimental, but you guys have really matured over the years and have been a joy and inspiration to watch. Your perspiration is definitely an inspiration. Your accumulated knowledge is impressive. Best wishes, always look forward to seeing your next project/travel.
JMR, I’m 58 and hopefully haven’t realized life is short too late. I really appreciate Billie and Cieras ambition and understanding of the value of life and living it in an adventurous manner. I’ve done a few extended adventures and long for more. I know it’s odd to say about them as I have never met them but I love those “kids” ( I have grown kids their age) 😳 thank you for the note.
Yep labour of love. ❤ I spell boat with a TT. Bring Out Another Ten Thousand I done up a Mainship Mediterranean with twin Detroit V8 fuel pincher engines. Took two years. Didn't get any of my labour back. But when it's all done, you stand back and go WOW, she looks shmick. Great job guys. 😊😊😊
You guys are an awesome team. We are always rooting for you. I personally think you could have made a bit more on your works. Beautiful job! The buyers are extremely lucky to have had you to bring that old neglected relic back to its formal beauty. In many cases on this project, it is better than new.
Not everything can be digested down to dollars and cents. Experience is worth a fortune, but never appears on a balance sheet. You guys live an amazing life. It's a no-brainer. Fun series!
Excellent cost breakdown for dreamers like me. Hoping to use information like this to purchase my own boat, maybe one with a little TLC required, but not too much.
You both did a great job! Don’t apologize for making a few bucks this is still America and your talents deserve compensation. Enjoyed and learned a lot from the videos wish you do more and make more money.
You could never buy the memories that you have and you guys done a wonderful job saved an old boat and you know a family is out there on a good boat that is ready for them
The time, resources and sweat I’ve put into projects over the years has all be worthy. Builds adventures and character. Plus the stories you have for life!
....I love boating both sails and gas....having been born in Bermuda it's in my blood....thank y'all for your breakdown of costs and sharing it with us....❤
I came as a cynic but left with admiration for your honesty. Jealous ? Probably and I appreciate that after all the sacrifices doing the boat up you got the experiences sailing it.
Im pumped for the scratch built boat coming up. My grandfather(sailboat that went to bermuda for the winters!)and father built their own boats. Its a lost art. Figuring the hours the way you do is spot on. Not all professional techs do good work….and if you want it done right you gotta do it yourself sometimes. Frankly, youre gonna spend more than your hours snd money combined on the same boat if it was brand new….so you still made out in my opinion. You two do awesome work, make awesome videos, dont sell yourself short. The DeFever is worth every penny and then some. Cant wait for the next one!
Nothing any better than giving yourself back your own equity. Never give anyone your equity to fulfill their dream. Always make sure you pay yourself first. That being said. This is my second comment because my first comment was when I received the video. I hit save and I am now watching the video. This comment is for the algorithm. Thank you so much for all of your amazing videos. 🍻🫡🏴☠️🤙🏼🍸🍾🥂🍷🍹🥃
Happy for you both! On your next catamaran take time to enjoy yourselves. Eventually you'll get older and things will get harder for you. Glad you're back by your family. It's been a great time watching your west coast travels. So awesome in the north east! Best Wishes Billy and Sierra and Jetty!
I don't comment very often but I have to say, you two seem to extremely patient with one another. This type of working relationship takes more than most people will know. Cheers for the break down and best of luck moving forward, new subscriber here.
Amazing restoration! I am impressed by your amazing work ethic. This was a colossal project, not many could take on something this massive so I give you lots of credit. Over the years I've done several boat resto's myself but nothing of the scale of Mountain Myst. I know what it's like to grind through the heat, dust, and itch until the job is done. My last one was a 1960's Whaler which made me about the same per hour rate of $10/hr that you both made. It was a labor of love, and that I believe has to be the real motivation. There's so much satisfaction from bringing back a boat from the dead so someone can enjoy it for many more years. Congrats!
Cheap boats are expensive and free boats are worse, lesson learned long ago. Best deal is the blank checkbook most expensive listed of the make, model.........usually ;0)
I'm so glad you share this. I've never done a boat but have worked a lot of projects for myself. I do it because I love the work, but I fear that people who only watch amazing transformation videos like this have no idea what is involved. You two are awesome and have amazing work ethic.
Buy, build, enjoy, flip. Repeat the process and get bigger and better every time. My next purchase is going to be my world cruiser, it’s only been 25 years in the making. Well worth the time and effort I do believe!.
That was an absolutely great breakdown and explanation! BTW, you probably already calced that you earned $10.40/hour working on that boat. Good thing profit wasn’t your goal. Great series!
At 11:32 you described the key to flipping boats, getting a minimally deteriorated boat at a low price, and turning it over quick. I describe what you have done with DeFever as restoration.
I really like that you considered your time. It’s valuable. I would note that the yard is getting the $100 an hour for the marine tech, not the tech. Around here, the yard takes the lion share and the tech is lucky to get $20 an hour. Having said that, your labor is easily worth what you value it at. Something that also isn’t a monetary pay-off but is valuable is the enjoyment you brought to so many of us by showing us your project and journey. Thanks!
I THINK YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON THAT BOAT. The heck with others who may disagree, but you kids are great, I know what its like, when I was young I rebuilt a skiff someone through away. When I lived in Florida, it took along time but it was worth it.
Actually you did get paid to do the job. That’s what you do for RUclips. I just looked you have almost 200k subscribers. I am one. And your views are really good. I bet your pay was pretty good. Good job guys. I love your channel.
awesome job, I did a sailboat many years ago and did my own labor, I totally understand the work you did, and your labor is probably much more.. Congrats on the sale and I cant wait to see the new sailboat. I hope you guys make it back to Nantucket..
Loved the Mountain Myst journey! Thanks for taking us along. I’m a disabled, paralyzed veteran who LOVES boating. I have a wake surf nautique and do adaptive surfing with it. Love watching your videos and can’t wait to see the new catamaran.
Mahalo nui loa for the inspiration. My husband and I plan on RVing, but I loved watching you breathe new life into MM. Look forward to watching your future adventures.
I want to say that both of you have done wonders with boats and you that is the challenge that both of you took, you did well and I am looking forward to the building boat from the ground on up. I am vary proud of everything that you both have done, see you again soon.
Yes I watched most all the episodes of the transformation I do watch quite a bit of sailing videos you guys aren't the only one but you guys do high-quality interesting videos that I appreciate being able to watch here on RUclips. Can't wait till you guys get in your catamaran
Love this! Huge kudos to you two. Wish I had done this years ago. So many people trap themselves in so many ways, with so many bills, and anchors around their necks, never realizing what they have done, and are not doing.
Been a long time follower, you guys were my first Boat channel and I’ve enjoyed your journey from sailboats, trawlers, catamarans and even Terra Tula. Inspiring to see your personal growth, and the “Love story” of you as a couple and your united love affair with the water and nature! So refreshing to see young people who are truly “living” life to its fullest and putting in the work to succeed in each and every thing you do!! Hard work, but the paydays of Billy versus the wind and waves to the genuine awe that Sierra has when seeing the beauty of Mother Nature’s creations!! Godspeed in all your future journeys, travels, and adventures. I have no doubt that you’ll be successful! And a big thanks to letting us come along for the ride!! You guys are awesome individuals, but together, you seem to have become Superheroes of the Best variety!!
Absolutely awesome series. Your work ethics and explanations of things and why you did what you did is spot on. I am mid 60s and can't do the same yet willing to try . (somewhat) Now l can pretend or do things vicariously through you two wonderful people. Always a pleasure to watch and dream with Tula.
I love your videos I worked in EMS for many years and one day got injured on the job to the point I was unable to continue working in EMS well anyway when I was recovering I started watching your videos and they got me through a lot so I wanted to thank you so much. So keep doing the awesome work you do. Love ya god bless.
Thanks for sharing all the info and being transparent. Time is money for sure, but substract the value of your love for doing this = win. You did fantastic work and made it look new again. Congrats.
Super-dude and Super-dudette! What else could anyone say? Quite an ambitious project. I did notice the mechanical room and engines were absolutely spotless. Excellent presentation!
Great video, loved the detail and balanced honesty.. I'm sure many others will benefit from your advice.. It really highlights how much stamina and fortitude you two have.. Thank You 😯
I really appreciate your transparency on this project.... And from my own experiences of restoring boats in boat yards, you're absolutely spot-on... Because I have seen so many people take on a boat project that was way over their head and ended up abandoning it.... And usually did more damage to the boat than when they originally got it... Anyways, wish you both luck on your next project..
Yall forgot one thing: you saved Mountain Myst from being scrapped. Gave her a new lease on life. That's another sort of priceless thing that came out of this project. I can't wait for the scratch-built boat project to begin! Keep this amazing content coming! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
and all the experiences that family that bought her will have.
Sailing Uma is in the process of saving Uma from the scrap heap and it makes me love their channel even more.
agree! we have a huge problem on the west coast of Canada with Derelict and Abandoned boats. Leaking toxins into the ocean and causing eco harm to marine life. So repurposing a used boat wins the day in our Green Boater community. kudos.
It doesnt matter, to be young and healthy and travel freely is priceless.
It truly is. We are incredibly thankful we are healthy and able to do what we do.
@@Tulasendlesssummer amen to that !
@@Tulasendlesssummer Take care of your joints. You will thank me in 20 years.
It appears that the new owners of Mountain Myst got quite a deal. You certainly put a lot of blood sweat and tears into the project.
Love this video, so many people in the samE boat as us 🇦🇺🙌😎🥰
As a life long boater, you guys are absolutely spot on with your assessment.
So true! Once you have experienced that feeling of accomplishment nothing else compares.
Very true! I had a boat because I love to fish. The first two years were great. Few problems and lots of fish. Slowly though it turned into working on the boat more than fishing. Finally it was seemed I was a having to spend a grand everytime i wanted to use it to catch a few fish. It had to go.
Yeah these two are exceptional people. It's so obvious.
I thought 89k was a DAMN EXCELLENT steal of a deal. The reality is, you two have the knowledge, experience, stamina, funds, & perseverance to get the most out of each situation.
Same! These boats list at this age for closer to $200k. I may be looking at the wrong things but I was really surprised.
That turned out to be one handsome boat.
Thanks so much John, we think so ourselves too.
Shocking !!!! Boats became very trendy since the youtube.... but the truth is.... boats are a money pit....PERIOD !!!! Thanks for being so honest !!!!
Two amazing beautiful people letting us come along for the ride. Thanks
You guys should feel incredibly good about yourself. Making a family's dreams come true for a fraction of the price.
Indeed they will continue to enjoy the dividends in the form of updates from that family. You can't put a price on that.
A complete refurb/refit of a boat like that will never be a wise financial decision. But when your livelihood depends on content, it makes perfect sense. I really enjoy the boat work videos and would much rather see that then what some of the other channels have done while waiting for their boats to be built.
Good job guys
What’s priceless too is the pleasure you provide every week to your patrons and followers! Waiting for your next project, eagerly😊
If you enjoyed the time, and effort put into the project/s and you feel like it added more to your life, it's always worth it.
Glad you included the labour time in the numbers, so many people forget this, it's an important consideration and it always take much more time than you think it will.

Lets not discount that you have lived on the boat rent free. The knowledge and expertise you have gained is priceless .

I gave up my own boat a couple of years ago when I hit 75. Now my boating is on cruise ships.
I wish I could subscribe 100 times to your channel. You guys are one of the top three channels for great boat refits and cruising videos.

Well worth the time and effort I do believe!.
eyyoooooo Been waiting for this for a week! Thanks for another awesome video!
That was an absolutely great breakdown and explanation!
BTW, you probably already calced that you earned $10.40/hour working on that boat. Good thing profit wasn’t your goal.
Great series!
Tony & Susan here, incredible positive attitude, good to be young, thanks for sharing.❤
You two are Rock Stars! Amazing work ethic smart and entertaining! Thank you!
At 11:32 you described the key to flipping boats, getting a minimally deteriorated boat at a low price, and turning it over quick. I describe what you have done with DeFever as restoration.
Appreciate the transparency.
You two did a beautiful job and that boat came out amazing. I love enthusiasm! 😊❤
Those buyers got an INSANE good deal.
I mean, it's a lot of money, but it's definitely in it.
When are you guys selling your next boat?
Actually you did get paid to do the job. That’s what you do for RUclips. I just looked you have almost 200k subscribers. I am one. And your views are really good. I bet your pay was pretty good. Good job guys. I love your channel.
awesome job, I did a sailboat many years ago and did my own labor, I totally understand the work you did, and your labor is probably much more.. Congrats on the sale and I cant wait to see the new sailboat. I hope you guys make it back to Nantucket..
Project was totally worth it. And I can hardly wait to see this build from scratch project!
Loved the Mountain Myst journey! Thanks for taking us along. I’m a disabled, paralyzed veteran who LOVES boating. I have a wake surf nautique and do adaptive surfing with it. Love watching your videos and can’t wait to see the new catamaran.
There’s nothing more enjoyable than messing about on boats.
My dad use to build houses on the side. Money in vs Money out was all he cared about. Your labor is free.
Great job. Amazing video!!! ❤
Awesome job, I never had a doubt you guys would get it done.
To be young again. I really enjoyed watching how well you both worked together and the beautiful work you did. Can't wait to see your next adventure.
Not bad kids not bad. Mountain mist will be moving around the ocean for quite a while you did a great job on her
You guys took on a challenge and accomplished, that's priceless, good for you. Take care.
Great video, loved the detail and balanced honesty.. I'm sure many others will benefit from your advice.. It really highlights how much stamina and fortitude you two have.. Thank You 😯
I loved this series. You guys made it fun. And I just got my new Mountain Myst long sleeve shirt and will wear it proudly. Thank you.
the point is your checkbook got filled and not emptied, and you enjoyed yourself, beats working every day...have fun.
Most important is that you guys were able to get back and the water and enjoyed. 🎉
