40+ year bowhunter here, you are exactly right, believe me, i have tried every set up you can imagine, and regardless if you shoot compounds or traditional, it all comes down to simplicity, reliability and consistancy. I also agree about selecting a deflex over reflex riser configuration, we don't need the extra speed of a reflex bow to kill deer at 20 yards, we need stabiity and accuracy.. Like yourself, I have killed many, many deer over the decades, and the longest shot I took was at a big ten point at 22 yards from a 12 foot ladder stand, and at 52 pound draw, from a Hoyt deflex riser bow, and a simple two blade Bear Razorhead, a complete pass through, as usual. We bowhunters tend to get roped in to thinking we need more gizmos than we do. Thanks for your great videos, you accurately to put things in perspective, and that is what new bowhunters need to hear.

It comes with so much more penetrating energy. All pass throughs. quiet. I learned something with reflex and deflex. I’m going to look more into that.
My compound bow set up is identical other than my arrows are in the 650's and I use aae max hunter vanes. The now 2 deer I've shot this year did not "jump the string" as my father in law likes to constantly complain about with his 425-450 ish baby arrows and mechanical failure broadheads. It's a valid point. Thanks jason!
Solid setup really. It’s such personal preference that not one thing is right or wrong. It’s what works for you!!!! I don’t like a heavy arrow for my compound as I loose accuracy when I shoot with heavy arrow. That is if I miss judge yardage 5yds heavy arrow can be 4-5in high or low where as the arrow I shoot is only changing about 3-4 in high or low from 20-30yds. My sight has pins good to 75yds. Mostly for practice purposes as I only shoot for practice 50+yds. Find my form gets completely dialed in after practice at this distances. The a 20yd shot feels point blank when hunting. I use a Hamski Epsolon rest which holds my arrow in any way I hold my bow while walking. Now shooting yes it has to be vertical. Back to fixed broadheads after 20yrs of mech but my reason isn’t penetration problems it’s having the blade freeze closed during cold wet conditions. Truly only thing you should be shooting is whatever you can stack arrows into tight groups at your hunting ranges with no matter the setup!!!!! Native people for centuries killed food everyday without any way of knowing what arrows weighed or what their poundage was. I assure you though they could shoot lights out with whatever they were shooting!!!!!
The first comment you made, is literally the reason I got away from the last compound I had. I could shoot small groups with it but felt like I was chasing my tail with keeping those groups where I wanted them. Short ata and low brace. Replaced with a 33” ata and 7” brace very low reflex riser bow and shooting is improved and I get away with more.
Yep forgiveness is the reason traditional bows are shaped like they are. Compounds today are shaped for speed. 30 years ago deflex compounds were common
Great stuff! Mostly a trad shooter but I do have a compound (Oneida) for one reason only, the extra power. Since my average shot is 15 yards and often less I’m shooting barebow and finger with 600+ grain arrows simple and quiet. I use a simple flipper rest as well.
My only concern with the feathers is them getting ruined or destroyed by the whisker biscuit either immediately or over time. But I assume you've done it enough to not worry about it. But when it comes to sending vanes with helical I would be interested in seeing a video about that.

Content like this is why i've been a subscriber now for a few years and enjoy watching and learning from your videos Jason. Another good one, thank you for putting in the time to make them/this one, much appreciated. I'm gonna come clean; i have a compound but haven't shot it nearly as much as i would like to or need to, and haven't yet hunted with it but really want to this year in late (December) deer season. Not sure how unique my situation is; i bought it used, so i didn't get to custom fit the draw length to myself but knew it was 29" and that's pretty close to where i'm at so i figured it would work out ok. It came with sight (5 pin, adjustable) and a drop-away rest, but no stabilizer. So i bought a stab. because everyone says you "need" one, and i didn't know any better. On that personal preference point of yours Jason, is there a downside to shooting a compound (in hunting scenario) without a stabilizer? I can see the obvious upside, which you pointed out, that it's less weight and one less thing to get caught on branches and such, but i wonder how it will affect the performance/feel of the bow? Regarding my rest, i took the drop away off as soon as i took possession of the bow and bought a Whisker Biscuit and installed that. Then started shooting in back yard. After some time and trying to get nock left/nock right tears figured out and eliminated, i asked another guy w/ a channel here on YT what the proper way to paper tune a whisker biscuit was. He said "you can't paper tune a whisker biscuit" and recommended i put my drop away back on. So i did. But now i'm thinking that since my main goal is to use the bow to hunt with, maybe i ought to go back to the whisker biscuit. Because as you correctly said, they're really fool proof for holding your arrow in place in adverse conditions. Simplicity. And i agree, that's often the best solution; simple and functional. But i do want to be able to get the bow properly tuned also. It has occurred to me however, that my nock left or right problems may well be me and not the bow tune. ie. inconsistent grip. Any thoughts on this? I also like you idea of using a single pin sight. Or at very least, eliminating 2 or 3 of the 5 i have. I don't think i need 5 since i'm not planning to target shoot competitively nor do i expect to be hunting at more than 30 (maybe 40 tops) yards. So thanks again for the excellent video, and i would appreciate any reply you might find time for re: my questions above. Take care.
@botchvinik8668 the stabilizer will help balance the bow in the hand and they make good short hunting ones you may like, but they do add weight. Never had a problem bare shaft tuning a whisker biscuit. But never tried to paper tune and we always shot feathers with helicle fletch out of them
I like a fast arrow with a mechanical head. But I didn’t hear you say anything wrong. In fact if I was building an arrow for a 40 pound bow I would change my preference to a heavy arrow with a head just like that. The only thing I could possibly critique is I have had a whisker biscuit get wet and then freeze so I don’t like them anymore.
@ryanr6656 nothing. Don't need to anymore with high foc arrows the weight off front leads and I don't actually even need and feathers. But liquid silicone for boots works best for keeping feathers from flattening out. Video about this coming out this week.
I’m hunting with my Mathews lift this year. I’m pulling 52 lbs at 31.5”, I’m shooting a 550 ish grain arrow and a magnus stinger. I’m only getting 237 fps, but this is gonna be a killing machine. I will probably get more penetration than most people pulling 70 lbs 😂😂.

@SamkoTradBow Not me. I think it wouldn't make sense to only get the same range out of it as a traditional bow. I mean, the one sight pin thing...yeah that kinda makes sense. Just shoot a normal weight arrow and let that pin be at 30 yards. Yeah, you are gonna get some real comments here.
Well, I come back and read all of the comments with the sound turn down. To my surprise most folks agree with you. I reckon most or Trad guys. Most of my bowhunting friends are compound guys that can hit better at 50 than I can at 20. I think they would think you had bumped your head. Maybe not though.@SamkoTradBow
Great video! You make great points to back up your choices. When I am having TP issues and cannot ethically shoot my traditional bows I go to my compound bow. It is a Mathews Switchback XT. I think it is 15 to 20 years old. It is 60# at 28" and I shoot 608 gr arrows with single bevel broadheads. I have yet to use it with this current setup on any game animal. Back 20 years ago I used 450 gr arrows and Iron head 125 broadheads. I took 7 animals in Africa with it and a bunch of deer. Obviously it worked well, but with today's knowledge I changed to the heavy arrow setup. I currently use an EZ V sight. You frame the vitals with the V and it shoots right on at any yardage. I agree with you 30 yards max at a whitetail. I'm using my longbow mostly now but I always practice with the compound just in case. My max yardage with the Traditional bow is 20 but prefer 7-13 yards.
outstanding. Loved everything in this comment. The swtich to compound when target panic kicks in, the bow set ups, the fact that you hunted africa and your shot distance choices. love it all.
Short brace height on a bow is just like a short barrel rifle. Shorter the barrel the less accurate it is. The longer the barrel the more accurate it is. Same with brace height. Just that simple. Great stuff Jason!
@JBs-Trad4Critters Not opinion. Fact. There is no similarity between brace height and barrel length affecting accuracy and your comparison lacks understanding of what is actually occurring. Barrel length only affects accuracy when using open iron sights as a long barrel provides a mounting position for longer sight radius. The length of a barrel does not increase accuracy so long as the rifling is engaged. If you use optics, accuracy is no longer tied to barrel length at all. In regard to brace height, a longer brace height is actually the opposite of a long barrel as the arrow leaves the string after a shorter period of propulsion. However, that is not what makes rifles accurate so their is no real comparison. The reason a longer brace height is considered more forgiving is that less time on the string means less time for flinching and bad form to impact arrow flight. That also has nothing to do with sight radius .
I’m 1 minute in and I’m just gonna say my opinion, which I’m guessing isn’t far from yours. I would set it up like I do my longbow. It has way more power than my longbow, so why not utilize it with a heavy arrow set up and fixed blade heads. It will perform fantastically with heavy arrows and fixed blades. And I can accomplish these results without pulling a stupid high draw weight.
Well I mean you said it your self your not a compound guy. I respect you shooting traditional but we are talking to different bows and they bow need tuned different and never bow are honestly way more accurate then traditional bows I shoot both. And feather don’t work well in compound so good luck with that tried it.
Yes indeed! I’m shooting a 10 year old PSE with a 55 lb draw weight and a whisker biscuit. Love it. No need for all the fancy bells and whistles when you’re using it as a tool instead of a status symbol. It gets the job done e and I get more practice in because I’m not tiring early due to high draw weight.
Keep it simple $tpd. Trad guys think alike. Make that darn compound indestructible. Those incredible new set ups I understand for 100yd shots. But seem fragile? I’m a 8yd guy. Or try to be.

@@longdrawarcher4857 perfect and agree 100 on the penetration
I shoot a 2019 Hoyt helix 60lbs with 600 grain arrows it breaks shoulders and still get a double lung shot!
@@Garydasnaill it should. It's 10 grains per pound. And a great set up
good video.
Thank you
I shoot 50lbs with single fixed pin. I won’t shoot over 30yards. My arrow setup is not that heavy but you do need some mass for lower poundage
Love it! Perfect system for hunting
Jason video audio is not coming through very well on my end sounds like you're underwater.
@autopeep24 yep the mic was not plugged in all the way. Think I put a text part in there apologizing. There are 2 videos I made while that mic was like that

Hey Jason. Totally unrelated. Just came across a US Consumer Product Safty Commision Salewa USA recalls Wid Country Rope Man 1 Ascenders Due to a failure to ascend. Recall date June 6th 2024. Remedy replace. Units about 7700 Canada 297. Just looking out for you and my fellow woodsman. You have a longer reach then I and if you wanted to fact check. Just wanted to inform you.
Thank you. Greatly appreciated. I made a full video about the recall when it came out and shown all the related serial number ranges and how to check yours.
You are gonna ruffle some feathers now. I am gonna set back and watch and then come back in and help with the haters😂
Oh you are gonna get smoked in these comments. I can't wait to come back and read some of these comments.
@@UncleDanBand64 I'm full expecting it to be brutal. But I stand by it 10p%. This is exactly how I would set up a compound for hunting!
@@UncleDanBand64 yep was expecting to get hammered too
Great video!
@@JBs-Trad4Critters agree
This is a poor understanding of both rifles and bows.
@@Waty8413 your entitled to your opinion
@@Waty8413glad you went into great detail on the subject.
Thank you and happy hunting.
@@longdrawarcher4857 spot on assessment
That setup requires hard work and practice no self respecting compound archer would stoop to hard work and practice

@@djkilpatrick5256 probably because the audio was messed up. The mic was not plugged in all the way. Didn't realize it until editing the video.
Well I mean you said it your self your not a compound guy. I respect you shooting traditional but we are talking to different bows and they bow need tuned different and never bow are honestly way more accurate then traditional bows I shoot both. And feather don’t work well in compound so good luck with that tried it.
@@Garydasnaill we can disagree. It's all good
Yall act like people can’t shoot the modern, reflex risers well.

I’m just stirring the pot lol
@@SamkoTradBowI mean most new bows are more forgiving then traditional both with let off ease of draw, shooting etc
Yes indeed! I’m shooting a
10 year old PSE with a 55 lb draw weight and a whisker biscuit.

@T-Mak-s7x over the hundreds of animals I've taken my average shot distance on deer is about 10 yards
