Absolute legend!!! I recently snapped my mt5 master cylinder in half and wanted to put a shimano lever on my magura calliper. The guys at the bike shop said they would not recommend it. However, you have proven that wrong with your video. Next time my lever snaps ill be switching to shimano. Thank you for the video!
I would never recommend it as a bike shop either 😅 if something goes wrong you would blame them. I can do it for my own bike and take all the risks myself. It is been a while since I built this setup, still running it today :) glad you found this helpful man!
VRMinde yes it’s nice to see a video like that for me because I’m also riding a Radon ;) and I’m running MT5 too ! I’m currently thinking to change the levers too, not because the originals are fragile, but only to have a better feeling, touch of the brake. Is it a good idea for that ?
@@alexandrebonniot1234 I was not disappointed by MT5 in a really bad way (except the failure and customer support). And I have been riding one SLX and one MT5 at the same time for more than a month. I liked the shimano levers more, but it would not be my first priority of investment if you know what I mean :) Maybe you can go to a bike shop and see if they have bikes to test ride with shimano brakes? You could see how the levers feel. I like the shimano levers more, but I could do wheelies, ride trails and etc. with MT5 as well. So it is really a personal situation and a personal choice.
VRMinde yes of course, this is a personal choice. But on my old bike I was running XT brakes, and I prefer the Shimano feeling than the Magura feeling. Does putting Shimano levers make the feeling better or it’s the same as before ? (I don’t really know if the touching feeling is the consequence of the lever or of the calliper...)
@@alexandrebonniot1234 Shimano levers feel much more responsive and accurate for me. The Magura calipers are perfect! Do not touch them :) Replacing the levers gives a better breaking experience in my personal opinion :)

Great video. My only issue is the long lever throw before the bite point and the rear having more lever throw than the front. I've tried overfilling, but that only last a couple rides before the shimano lever squirts out the excess fluid. Thoughts?
The Duke of MTB , sounds like you have some leakage issue with your rear brake? It took me longer to bleed the rear one - adding oil to the top after first 2 rides helped (overfilling as you say). No oil should be squirted out. My both brakes “bite” at the same distance 🙄 Another factor can be wear of brake pads. If you put in wide blocks between the pistons for bleeding and then install brake pads that are narrow/worn there will be a bigger gap resulting in more distance before “bite”. You can try using narrower piston stop blocks when bleeding to have a minimal gap. And finaly SLX bite point is fixed and not adjustable :( XT and above brakes have an adjustable bite point...
Nice just got my new Shimano saint levers to pair with my magura MT5E so going shigura at last as magura levers are terrible and saints are definitely a worthy upgrade to my ebike
@@VRMinde cheers decided saints would be best for magura MT5E on my Haibike as saints are Shimano rated for downhill so having servo wave will help to as ride bike park Wales and downhill to so need that stop power as old magura ones leaked oil when ever hit brakes not good look for magura at all now just waiting for olive and barbs to come today then can swap to saints
@@rubenvor I had the same story - my old mt5s lasted for 4 years and on my new bike bursted open (thankfully) one day before we hit downhill park. And then when I looked for it - found more people with the same issue. I do not think it is very common-probably very rare, but very dangerous :)

Andrei hi, I can’t compare. I was unhappy with the handles and replaced them. I have heard many experienced riders advocating for the “great magura calipers” though 🙄 They are working great, but I do not have shimano ines to compare myself
The magura calipers are much better. The shimanos always have an inconsistent bite point. Shigura is pretty good. But, if you can afford the mt7 with hc3 levers, then that is the best.

Tried that ,tweaked it for 2 months ,not reliable at all .Tried also with magura royal blood and with shimano oil ,with magura rb was a little bit better .There is 1 big point which i've found ,internal cable routing affects the brake spongieness !!! On the frames which have the rear brake externally routed it might work better.Of course if you ride the brakes only on flat or light trails it works okay but nothing extreme or even dh.Now i'm running mt7 pro with mdr p. Totally different from mt5 .
@@VRMinde as i said it's depends on many things , rider weight ,brake usage ,etc..Since i have /had around 98-95kg i was abusing the brakes af. Maybe you got a better qualify batch .

its really good idea for the bang for bucks. I have tried the another one that i use brakelever shimano deore and caliper with shimano alivio. Its my option to hack the brakepad cheaper than caliper deore. Eventhough cheaper brakepad but caliper get more power brake from deore brake lever. hahaha its briliant for me and i see your hack on this video is more more good briliant idea. Good Job!!!
Currently, my only issue with the mt5/mt7 brakes is that they are so powerful that the rear caliper keeps shifting over into misalignment even with the bolts torqued down properly. This happens on both me and my wifes bikes. I don't dare torque it more than 7nm even though 6nm is the recommendation. I ruined the caliper bolt holes before from over tightening.
@@VRMinde Try checking your rear caliper alignment. Maybe it's off by a millimeter since you last checked and you just haven't noticed. I check every couple days, recenter it, and then after a day at the bike park it's off center again. Let me know.
I used all the mineral oils on all the systems. I have not mixed two in one though. But I have never had any gaskets/o-rings worn out or damaged... :) at least yet!
Oh I would not hesitate putting any mineral oil, as a matter of fact I have used both the red and the blur and even mixed them in half and had no issues with it. I am pretty sure Set (Bermpeak channel) used baby oil for over a year on one of his bikes and it worked just fine 😂
Damn those levers are crap, that would drive me nuts, was literally minutes from buying MT5s instead of M8120s for a new Ibis build .. i should just stick with Shimano , my 6yr old M785 single pistons are still excellent and levers have taken some abusive crashes..
Doghead 007 hi mate. It is hard to express it in words :) For me they do not feel “instant”, but they are way stiffer than magura handles. After two rides I felt like I have accurate control of my brakes. As I had one magura and one slx, Magura felt “spongy”, harder to “predict” where is the bite point. I do not know if that helps :))
VRMinde carbo texture or stuff like this, its selfmade of magura, normally its a bit More stable, I personally had no Problems yet but i saw many Shimano customs. BUT u cant say nothing about the brake calibers with them 4 pistons them self 🤤
Lil L the calipers are excellent! I just hope they will step it up with the levers as well. And maybe there already are better ones from Magura, just hard to obtain in the area around here

I had the same issue with that cap coming loose and letting fluid escape. I also put a zip tie on it.

i got magura mt32 4pistons on front and 2 pistons at rear iv have been thinking that same modification. Maybe now i do it.

If at all, go for a better Shimano caliper. like the BR-MT520. My experience with Magura was terrible.

That is interesting as I am still running the same setup, it is more than a year now, almost two! Maybe a good time to replace the oil :)

The Duke of MTB just remembered to check the bike. Calipers are aligned and in place. I did not use a torq wrench last time fitting them...

Magura should have made the brake lever body from Nylon not plastic.. If they want to be cheap
Well, I think it is not just "normal ABS" plastic, it is something a bit better :) But I will never go back to the plastic handles now :)
the standard MT5 levers are a composite. The better upgrade are the aluminium 1-finger HC levers for the MT5 brakes.

So this answers the mineral oil question that shimano oil is compatible with Magura.
