Great presentation. This has been very educational for me as a new rider. I like the idea of customized brake levers. That seems important for riders of different hand sizes. Function is priority.
I just ordered a front MT5e brake system from Jude at Magura. He was very helpful in helping me find the right brakes, rotor and mounting adaptor. Also, due to my hand issues, they are customizing the length of the hydraulic line for me, which they don't normally do. Thanks to Jude and Matt for their efforts. Now, let's just hope it all fits on my Juiced Ripcurrent S. Should be here in a few weeks.
I'm a Magura customer for life. I've have martas, MT8s and currently the MT7 trail combo setup. Jude is also super awesome. (my moto also runs a magura clutch system)

Well done informative video. Sometimes people get caught up in power and speed and can forget how important brakes are. Magura makes great brakes and its nice to see them make specific brakes for ebikes.

Good crash course on disc brakes Chris. My R & M (equipped with Magura disk brakes), suffered from front brake chatter (screeching). Nothing Goofs up a great ride on your R & M until your squeaky brakes turns it into a HUFFY. Sam at Fullerton E-Bikes applied an aerosol "anti-squeal" which took care of the problem. Any thoughts you would like to add on noisy disk brakes?
First point is making sure your caliper is perfectly aligned. From there making sure the disc isn’t bent. Outside of that uneven pads or contaminated pads can make noise. We usually sand the pads down and clean the rotor with alcohol. This usually does it, but sometimes the anti-squeal can help if those measures don’t fix the issue.
I know many people mentioned but I’d like to repeat again. This guy is the best representative I’ve seen. Not a b*llsh*t at all, pure technical information.
I always wanted Magura brakes since I saw those hydraulic rim brakes on trials bikes back when I was at school. Never actually got them though. Maybe on my next Riese & Muller when I eventually replace it.
Hey Jude! You mention how with cars you really can’t adjust brakes “on the fly”. Well, in recent years a thing has emerged in the auto industry called “adaptive brake control (abc) which essentially calculates how a drives uses his brakes and adjusts them automatically for optimum efficiency. I’ve noticed bike brake technology moving more towards techy things like ABS. How long to you think it will be before we see adaptive brake control on bikes? Possibly a small centralized computer module for things such as this as well as analytics, where you can download the gathered analytics of a ride from a removable chip, impit it directly into a computer or your phone and recalibrate your bike. Then I set the chip back into the onboard computer module and essentially have a fully customized ride, from brakes, shocks, transmission, even tire pressure? Very interesting stuff!

Either the caliper needs to be realigned or the rotor could be bent. These are usually pretty easy fixes. I hope to make a video on this eventually, but you should be able to find one easily if you search for those topics.
Just to follow up on what I wrote below.... Due to this video and Jude's help, I purchased a Magura brake system for my bike. The Magura MT5e and MDR-C rotor installation went very well on the front of my 2018 Juiced Ripcurrent S fat eBike. Due to bad weather, I haven't ridden the bike yet but expect to next week sometime. I currently have my ebike in a Park Tool stand, and from what I can tell from hand-spinning the tire, the Magura is quite amazing. I am looking into accessories and pads and I'm trying to understand the 4 types of Magura brake pads that appear to come in 2 styles; individual and connected pads. Not sure how to choose between the two or what the compounds are, but I believe I want the 8.S pads for an ebike. They do not make this very easy to understand. Also, Magura sells some colored bling rings to spruce up the look of the caliper, but for $38. I will find an alternative (like yellow garden hose washers). Can't wait to ride the bike.
JUST A QUICK UPDATE; After a broken season of riding due to the pandemic and an old back injury, I have about 500 miles on the Magura MT5e front brake. It's everything I had hoped in a confidence-inspirig front brake. I only have 500+- miles, so my verdict isn't fully developed yet, but since there's no other 4 piston front brake systems out there for my bike, all I can say is it's truly superior to the dual pistin Star Union front brake the bike came with in every way. The Magura and the 2mm thick MDR-C 180mm Magura rotor are a complete win!
Jude, if you see this post can you please clarify the differences between the MT5e and the MT5eStop? It is not appearent from looking at the Magura site and other bike owners are asking me. All I can see from your site is a different lever offering and the MT5e has the normally open safety switch whereas the eStop does not. Please clarify if you will.

One thing that I found strange is the fact that they have released the E-Stop brakes aimed at E-bikes and or E-Vehicles but the brake levers do not have a ball end tips, this is a legal requirement for two wheeled vehicles as I understand, so I wonder why they did this, the MT5E's use a ball tips at the end of each brake lever.... if you are wondering the ball tip stops the lever digging into the ground in the event of a crash so its a safety requirement/feature.
@@judemonica7951 Correct, but why not include this as standard this is a progression from the mt5e, but without this feature manufactures and end users who wish to register they bikes or cargo vehicles as mopeds or s-pedelcs won't be able to do so.
@@frederickoparah1669 Understood. So its probably a pricing and margin choice by the OEM. Reasoning being if it isn't required "by law" then it can be an option and it is.
I think the ball stops the lever penetrating parts of your body in a crash. This is a D.O.T requirement, which is the European standard for anything that goes on the road and probably not a requirement in other parts of the world ?. The E-Bike lever is probably much longer and therefore requires the ball.
How does the weight of an ebike differ from the weight of the rider in regards to brake performance? I'm 235 on a 30 pound mountain bike. What if I was 225 on a 40 pound ebike? Still stopping 265. You mentioned ebikes get to speed faster and higher than traditional...thanks.

I’m using the MT Trail for about 2 years now, and I have no complaints. I even convinced people to buy maguras, that were using shimanos or SRAM. By the way, I’m trying to use Bionol this week. That should deal with the boiling temperature.
I just ordered a set of Trail SL brakes. They are back ordered till the end of the month (hopefully), I was told my Shimano rotors would work, how much of a sacrifice am I making by not upgrading my rotors as well?
I'm not sure why, but Magura is the ONLY company that truly makes a real bonafide replacement ebike brake system on the market. Their MT5e brake system with their 2mm thick MDR-c 180-203mm rotor is more than capable of stopping a big-ass heavy fat ebike or a down-hill electric mountain bike without melting the rotor or pads or boiling the brake fluid. Unfortunately this is like the only decent Magura video that tells anyone this, and it's just one segment. The MT5e should be standard on every fat ebike and high-end mountain ebike.

Why is that required?
I think the ball stops the lever penetrating parts of your body in a crash. This is a D.O.T requirement, which is the European standard for anything that goes on the road and probably not a requirement in other parts of the world ?. The E-Bike lever is probably much longer and therefore requires the ball.
NICE VIDEO!
Were can I buy those angled Banjo please because can't find/see them listed on magura sites
Love the Voodoo Zocalo in the background, i have M7s on it...Daryl must have supplied the bike, he built mine?
Great details. Thanks
Magura only makes the hydraulic brake system? No mechanical?
where i can find the adaptor to changue the angle of the cable? they show on the minute 25:17 in the video??
Great video!! 🤘🤘
Treating myself to the HAIBIKE XDURO AllTrail 5.0 2020
Which in turn led me to this video as there is alot of magura components in the specs
Looks like I'm in for a real treat collect in 2 days cant wait I tell ya ❤👌🏻
loved this i learnt some things and some myths busted awesome great presentation from new zealand i hope to fit some magura mt5s to my reign e+ 0 at later stage
Good stuff 👍👍💯
Thanks 😊
+Racer X thanks!
Perfect job, greetings!
Thank you 🙏
I’m using the MT Trail for about 2 years now, and I have no complaints.
I even convinced people to buy maguras, that were using shimanos or SRAM.
By the way, I’m trying to use Bionol this week.
That should deal with the boiling temperature.
Really great! Keep us posted how the Bionol works out. I’m not too familiar with it.
I had sram codes and i couldn't stop, just got maguras and they're so much better it's not even funny
That was so informative thank you
Outstanding. Well done.
I just ordered a set of Trail SL brakes. They are back ordered till the end of the month (hopefully), I was told my Shimano rotors would work, how much of a sacrifice am I making by not upgrading my rotors as well?
I think its the 2mm rotor width that is important. Gonna order a set of maguras when i can. All my rotors are 1.8mm
Anyone know where I can get the 40 degree hose connector?
I'm not sure why, but Magura is the ONLY company that truly makes a real bonafide replacement ebike brake system on the market. Their MT5e brake system with their 2mm thick MDR-c 180-203mm rotor is more than capable of stopping a big-ass heavy fat ebike or a down-hill electric mountain bike without melting the rotor or pads or boiling the brake fluid. Unfortunately this is like the only decent Magura video that tells anyone this, and it's just one segment. The MT5e should be standard on every fat ebike and high-end mountain ebike.
Did he just say HC3 Levers are compatible with all Magura brakesets? So it's good with MT5s?
Wow!
Those are a lot of cooool informations 🙏🏼
That was awesome THANK YOU.
What camera/lens do you use to shoot this?
This was shot on the Canon EOS R with the RF 35MM 1.8 on a Ronin SC gimbal
Lot of very good info!
Can u really put Magura HC3 or a MT7 HC1 Lever on a MT5 Brake? I really like the tool free reach adjust on the MT7 lever. Some say u can do it, some say other
Any new information about those different levers fitting the mt5's?
@@oggoblin295 they fit but they don't work the same when you adjust it
Wish i had the money for a pair of mt5 or mt7 brakes, but my sram guide t are still working good.
SRAM makes great brakes as well :)
I'm getting mt8s in new year can't wait
So my question is what about grazing a tree going downhill will that break the handle or the master cylinder?????? Ive seen alot of people complaining about that when they crash since its plastic
Love the magura's. :) But hate the incredible slow auto focus on that lens.... :P
Then you don’t have big issues.
Very difficult to bed in the brake pads but when they are oh yes ..Power!!!
Great I fomative videos
