"All these years I've spent trying to get that Stewart Copeland snare drum sound or that Stewart Copeland hi-hat sound," said Primus' Les Claypool, who began jamming with him in 2000, "and he sat down at this [drum kit] that was laying around with old heads on it... And all of a sudden there was that Stewart Copeland snare drum sound. It made me realize it's all about how he attacks his drums, how he plays."
Just came into possession of a 5x14 and I had to come back to this video. This drum has quickly become my current favorite, got it for next to nothing and I’m blown away.
I restored one of these COB Pearl snare drums for someone not long ago. They didn't even know what it was. I was honest and told them how much it was worth. It was in terrible shape and looked like crap. Completely disassembled it and restored it to brand new again. It sounded great. Great vid mate 👍
This was unexpected fun. I'd love to watch a 10 minute analysis about my favorite snare drum: Fibes 6x14 Chrome over Fiberglass. I also owned and loved the PINK clear...but there was nothing like the/my Fibes Chrome. I don't remember what the stock batter side rim was but I always changed my batter-side rims to die-cast. And Buddy Rich agreed.
I had one just like that years ago I traded it in for the one that the snares go straight across I have a 5 and 6 and half chrome over a brass love the sound !
Stewart Copeland made the majority of The Police recording using the Pearl Custom model fitted with a die cast hoop. Logically, as he endorsed Tama, live he would be seen using a Tama snare drum. In the studio, endorsees tend to use what sounds best, not always what they endorse.
Terry, great video. I own the Tama SC145 snare. Love it, glad it’s made in Japan as I heard some of those signature Tamas are made in China, don’t know if that’s true or not. Guess what I just got today...Paiste The Rhymatist Blue Bell 22” Ride! Just came in the mail this afternoon from Cascio Interstate in Milwaukee. It’s great, not as dry as I thought, but I’m new to drums. If you want me to drive it over to your studio so you can record a video on it, my pleasure. It’s pretty cool. Gorgeous as hell. Lemme know. Steve.
This drum is called the Custom model and appears in the 1977 catalogue from Pearl - Model 4214. It's a Ludwig 400 homage - the Jupiter was the Pearl version of the Ludwig Supersensitive
Yes-a lot of folks including myself often hijacked to Jupiter term to refer to the brass shell Pearl three line brass drums. Like calling a soda a COKE not matter what it is.
70s 5x14 Imperialstar steel is a fantastic snare btw. Built like a tank and has a great snappy response for a light touch and then you can just absolutely lay into it. Thanks for your great vids as always.
Just heard the 1st Police Live Album for the 1st time in AGES & bloody Sting introduces “Walking on the Moon” as a song off of HIS new album?! The Rot set in E A R L Y..? 😉
Great video. You say nobody was making Chrome over brass in the 70's but rogers and pearl? Ludwig was making the COB supraphonic 60' and 70's . 70's had that blue and olive badge. The pearl that Copeland played is a "Classic Deluxe" model. Jupiter is different. They list them side by side in the old catalogs. Jupiter has way different throw off.
Some guy advertised a COB Pearl snare in my local area. I'll be honest I didn't know much about it, it was only $135. Turns out after I bought it and shared on the group I realized it was a real Jupiter with parallel system. I didn't know the difference between the COB snares, thought they were all the same. Drum is in amazing shape, unforntunately the snare wires are all messed up and no real replacement exists anymore. I saw rDavid video on a modification but I want to keep it original.
Update: There's a nice photo of Copeland playing a 2-line steel one of these Pearl's in 80/20 Drummer's video here at 1:05 ruclips.net/video/Ow0y_L4bC7M/видео.html
Awwww you broke my heart. I thought I had the snare! Mine only has two bands. Still sounds great. I use it with my 70’s jellybean Pearl crystal beats. I need to send you a picture of them.
Copeland used a 2 line steel as well. In a pic from the 80/20 Drummer's Top 5 Copeland Beats, there's a clear shot of a 2 Line Steel one on the kit (1980 photo). Here's the vid: ruclips.net/video/Ow0y_L4bC7M/видео.html . . Go to 1:05 in the video. You see it clear!
Lol ! Your videos are not only informative but entertaining!!! I love your brief Stewart Copeland "impersonation!" 😂🤣😂 Keep up the awesome videos Terry! Actually, you need a TV show brother! Or a weekly live, online show, interviewing drummers and doing some gear reviews!!!!!! I think alot of us would dig that!! Thanks for another great video Terry! 🥁🥁🥁 P.S.... What kind of video camera / recorder are you using ????
Great drum! If we're talking about the same era drum, it's the same steel shell you'll fine on the original Imperialstar, Royalstar and some of the early Rockstar.
It's in good hands now with a friend. A blucro can be made. Find a less expensive 6.5x14 Supra or Blacro (or resissue Acro) and give it a goos light sparkly blue spray painting! The slight muffling of the shell tones it up a bit. *If you ever see a 6.5x14 Acrolite with it's factory 'black galaxy' finish, buy it. It's an incredible drum (as are the 5x14).
I bought a 5X14 Black Galaxy off Guitar Center for 89 shipped and yes it is a great drum. Wide tuning range. I took the sound control out as it was rattling something fierce. What kills me is the wild price differences for these drums. I have seen them as low as 50 and as high as 350. Crazy.
I have one of these COB models with the George Way style strainer. New Remo heads fit pretty tight compared to New drums. It's no problem as I tune pretty tight. They are great snares, super loud. Someone told me they are 3ml thick. Is this confirmed?
Well yes-this is a general guide. I do in fact mention in the video that there are steel 3 liners, but I've not seen a brass 2 liner unless it was possibly reeaaally early on..This is just friendly general advice!
Just bought one ! Question. The butt plate is a long, flat metal piece that is slightly curved / bent inward toward the bottom near the hoop opening. Is this correct.
Terry, thanks for this video. I've got the 6.5" in COB (with the parallel strainer and in almost pristine condition considering its age) and the 5" in steel, and have sworn by these for years even before they became quasi popular again. The 6.5" COB has die cast hoops, and I love it. Total workhorse snare, but it does weigh a freaking ton.
Well, I'm not demanding ya know commission for intellectual property rights or anything, but help with a certain missing l-arm for my tom might be nice. lol wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
@5:37 I think it needs more RIM SHOT!!! Copeland was always hitting all the drums with a rim shot. Which was the late 70s new wave style... I think he tuned it so tight there were NO OVERTONES... IMHO
We feel fancy saying soda now. So we say that more because it's different. Carbonated beverage is funny too. Soft drink...... for softening bones is less cool... 😂
i think thats a gladstone style throw. the kiss bicentennial poster shows that throw and smaller 3 lines. i guess thats the only difference. i have that snare but w the parallel strainer and its brass and heavy.
I just watched A video on RUclips in which copeland states that he always used the pearl snare. It’s the one sitting on his kit at the time too. He picks up the Tama and says “but Tama finally worked out how to get that sound...” but he doesn’t have it on his kit?
I've never seen a pic of Copeland pac in the day with the 3 line brass Pearl snare. I have actually seen pic with the 2 line steel one though! Pretty much all pics I've seen depict the steel Tama Imperialstar snare..
bonzoleum - interesting. It might be that it was kept for the studio and not taken on the road. I know I have drums I don’t your with but love to record with.
