- Here's an update to the original Copeland Snare ( • Stewart Copeland's Sna... ) video I did recently.
*And here's a link to the video I refer to in the video:
• The Police - Roxanne (...
Copeland is absolutely on fire at that show-he's killing it!
A chromed STEEL TWO-LINER Pearl drum at this show! See 5:23 - 5:29.
Here's me back in the day play a two-liner:
• DAZED & CONFUSED TRIBA...
Many of my videos in this 2009 era were made using this drum!

Replaces "too long" 15 minute video with a 17:19 minute video. This is why we love him! The passion, humor and charisma are strong in this one.
If you look up Steward Copeland snare, they are all pretty much chrome over brass, but its cool that steel was good enough for him!
Hi Terry, Bryan from Queensland Australia. Re the pearl 2 band snare drum. I think that drum Copland was playing was a cob .I happen to be refurbishing one at the moment and it is with out a doubt a two band cob Jupiter hole in the centre drum. You are a great inspiration to the global drumming community and I enjoy everything you have to say and yes collecting and playing this wonderful instrument has been a joy. Cheers
Thank you, Bryan! It turns out Copeland had both a steel and a cob model! Does it have the lever throwoff?
4:06 - do you have a link to your identifying video for these, please?
LOL! That imagined discussion between Stewart and Tama® around creating his signature snare drum cracked me up! 😄👍 And I had not seen that 'Police in Tokyo' clip before; A bit of a train-wreck performance but also very entertaining at the same time, with that whole "Close the door!" stuff going on, Stewart struggling with grabbing a new stick, Andy finishing the first chorus a couple of bars too late...😄 And this must've also been the first clip I've watched in which Sting is playing the _blonde_ Ibanez® bass instead of the dark-stain one; I've seen it in loads of photos over the years (including the ones of the 'Zenyatta...' artwork) but never in any videos 🙂
Yes- i love all that footage!!
Pretty certain I have the whole Snare of Mysterious Provenance figured out. It's the pearl B4514 as seen in the 1979 catalog. The 4214 mentioned in the last video is often confused to be the same drum, but it can be seen in their mid 70s catalogs that the three bands were narrower and closer together, while the 4514 is identical to Copeland's snare, as well as the one you have here. Also, pretty sure Copeland is playing a 3 line in that '81 video, based on the height of the lines in comparison to the lugs, and his leg is just obscuring the bottom line, but not a 100 percent sure on that.
Thanks for your input Cole!
I have a Pearl kit with that gold / black badge and those lugs. It's probably 70's / early 80's. It has a black wrap and the shells are maple. It's a quality set of drum. Great sound!
I have a copy of Rhythm magazine (dated January 2019 #289) in front of me and it contains an interview with the man himself. Also included is a little sidebar about 'the' snare drum, accompanied by a photograph of it. It looks exactly the same as the drum you have there - square badge; chunky lugs; three bands and a low vent - except that the top hoop is of course die-cast. This is what Stewart Copeland says about it, and I quote him precisely as it is written:
"One thing you might get a kick out of is this drum. This is 'the' snare I played on all the hits, all the tours. It's a low-level Pearl snare with Tama hoops. The top hoop is die cast and the bottom is flanged. It just has a crack. This one never leaves the room. Tama said we should do a signature snare. It took a couple of years but they cloned it. Every one is the same, they're all perfect. It's still selling. Musicians buy it. You can go into a studio and they'll have a Ludwig Black Beauty and one of these. They both serve very different functions. The Ludwig is a fat-back, my signature snare is a crack-back! it's a hit drum, if you'll forgive the pun!"
And that was all he said.
So, does the fact that he said that it's a "low-level Pearl snare" mean that it's actually steel rather than brass? Who knows? Irritatingly, he doesn't say any more about it. But that's what he said and you can draw from it what you will. It is interesting though, that he replaced both of the hoops and didn't just pop a top one on. I put a heavy die-cast top hoop on an old Ludwig steely back in the day, leaving the flanged hoop on the snare side, and I must say that it did sound fantastic. It makes sense really, as you get the best of both worlds - a super-tight heavy top hoop, for those cracking rimshots and a lighter, more resonant snare-side hoop, to really pick up the buzz. That combination, more than anything else, is what I think makes his snare drum sound so good.
P.S. Having examined the video you refer to, I have to say that it is inconclusive. It looks to me like it may well have three bands, but it is very difficult to make out. Copeland also states categorically that the drum he has at home with his during the interview is 'the' drum - the one that he has always used - and it has three bands. I cannot for the life of me imagine why he would lie about that, can you?
I have recently fallin in love with putting diecast hoops on the bottom of my toms and triple flanged on the top
Greetings Terry , I think it's close to hanging out in the basement with ya. Started playing drums in Naiperville in 69 played through high school ,worked my ass off for 40 some years didn't play drums and now I get to play again, thanks for all the tips and lessons. It's all coming back
,
Got my Tama Signature Copeland Snare in 2015! Think I’m the only one more obsessed than you with Stewart’s equipment!
Normally I’m not into bright poppy sounding drums but I HAD to have it. It’s quite a contrast in sound to the rest of my kit..
It seems Bonhams sister and Jason Bonham have 2 different views of "The Sting Diss". His sister says that John introduced himself to Sting and Sting said some derogatory things and Bonham was ok with it. Jason says that Bonham stepped on Sting's shoes and Sting cockily replied "Don't Step On My Blue Suede Shoes Man". To which Bonham replied...."I'll Step On Your Effing Head!".........
Hey Terry, I love this stuff. You are right, he is using the steel 2 line in the Tokyo vid you referenced. And I know you mentioned it in passing, but here is the link to the Copeland/Reverb vid where he shows the 3 band C.O.B. version with a CAST top hoop. He claims that it's 'The Snare' he played all the hits on. Go to Minute 2:40.

You know terry that would be freaking awesome if you could stream it live!!! Please do soooo!!! Lol..sooo many questions about bohnam needs to be answered! 😁🇺🇸🤘
That was the snare I owned for years with my 1978 Pearl Chrome 12-pc concert tom kit.
I have a Pearl SC 145 COB 3 band that's thinner bands with the black plastic badge and air hole located just like the one in this video. Sounds great!!!
Isn’t there just a clear all round photo of THAT snare somewhere out there..? 🤷♂️
Terry, don't know if you've watched this yet: ruclips.net/video/ouiJFoIvPcI/видео.html
Its a Stewart Copeland interview with reverb, he shows and talks about the pearl, and it is a three line COB. Check it out, great watch.
Ian LeBlanc It’s at 2:39 minutes in the video linked by Ian.
Thanks Ian-I've seen it. He did in that one from November finally say Pearl. But in this one from 2013 he didn't (see 2:45) : ruclips.net/video/WwYJxWQCxEE/видео.html. This is the video where we Copeland nuts saw officially Copeland's MysProv was indeed a Pearl.
I just realized that in both clips he shows and mentions the snare at the same point in the respective videos (2:39 in the Nov 2017 Ian posted, and 2:45 in the Dolbear Feb 2013 one I just linked above .
Terry, I own the Tama SC145 Copeland snare AND the Paiste 22” Copeland “The Rhymatist” Blue Bell Ride. I don’t live too far from you, so if you want me to bring them to your home studio so we can shoot the shit some afternoon and you can do a video on each, my pleasure. I can Skype you first so you know I’m not a d-bag or weirdo or anything. Lol.
Terry tried to upload newest video it’s been removed I believe by Facebook
I have a 70s steel with 3 bands its awesome and looks exactly the same as my brass snare. I'm so pissed you didn't play the COB!!!
I've been a Pearl guy since about 1987 ... I have both the COB and steel. Damn it if Terry isn't correct, he's playing the steel one in Tokyo 81. On that note, I have a really nice 5x14" Pearl Jupiter in steel I'll sell somebody now (maybe the price just went up?! joking)
ruclips.net/video/ouiJFoIvPcI/видео.html
Here Tez in this vid @2:45 is Copeland admitting its a pearl snare used for all his hits.
He used the COB in the studio -- on every Police recording. He used other drums on the road.
terry are you in a band? or just for fun?
Hi G-currently not in a band,
5:23... KIND OF FUZZY shot... I don't know where the sound of snare drums come from. I have a Premier that sounds great TIGHT, and a newish Sonar that is great loose, but not great tight...
Why wouldn't his Signature TAMA actually look like THE snare?
IF it IS a Steel Snare then why not make just THAT?! 🤷♂️
Well, there were 2 models: a brass shell and a steel shell. Stewart had both. As foar as the sig snare, I'd bet Tama approached him and since he's not a big drum gear geek, probably told them of his Supra he had with his Ludwigs, and his Pearl snare drums (that I believe he bought in New York on that day "the money dropped" and they each bought all kinds of stuff).
@ then I guess that there isn't a Special Snare if he was that interchangeable with his gear and he's playing a bit of a joke on us all...? Fair Enough!
Anything Stewart related you should talk to my good friend Jeff Sietz. He's been Stewarts tech for maybe 35 years. Or more. Search him out on FB. Great guy. LOADS of info on gear
Thanks SFS! I actually have chatted with him on the phone on a few occasions over the years. Super nice guy and always amenable to chatting about Copeland.
Jeff is a stand up guy. Great drummer as well as a tech ( He gave me a hand dialing in my kit for the last Riverdogs album in 2017)
Keep doing what you’re doing Terry. You rock.
Here he is in a more recent interview, briefly showing what he called "The snare", clearly a COB 3 bander. ruclips.net/video/WwYJxWQCxEE/видео.html (3 mins in)
I have a snare that looks like that but it is called a SpeedFire 2000
A title for that video you say Copeland needs to do: Stewart Copeland's Cop Licks.
great video,.i would say playing in japan they wouldn't bring all there gear or have multiple kits touring Asia, Europe ,states
i dont think theyre ever steel if theyre 3 bands. from listening to demo vids i decided the dw nob is the best sounding snare. isnt the tama sc model steel?
Hey Terry, Is this the vid you mentioned where Stewart whispers 'pearl' when hes showing off his COB snare?
ruclips.net/video/ouiJFoIvPcI/видео.html
Great stuff. Keep up the good work.
I guess maybe he only had the steel version available during that live in Japan video. A lot of backiline people understand details all to well, but its probably a safe bet that whatever the company supplied for backline was as 'close' as they could find.
So... apparently, he used both.
Thanks for the comment, Keith! That video is indeed one of the videos I referenced in my video.
He doesn’t whisper Pearl. He says it as loud as a bell.
I have a request: m.ruclips.net/video/rwdV9fbSrYs/видео.html(there’s an actual video of them performing this but this is the best version)
Stephen Morris is the most underrated drummer of 1978-85!
First
I have drums but full of negativity But don't avail to play time to suicide
