"I don't know how we got in"
- The current Mayor of Thunder Mesa has opened the old house to tourists for visiting. This is canon, by the way. You can buy a big metal sign with the announcement at the park ;)
- In the Foyer, the ghost is now only holding a noose. The suiter is no longer hanged. This *seems* like a lighter take...until you realise that the scene appears after Vincent Price says "if you can't find your way out...the Phantom can always help you". In other words..."yeah, if you can't get out, you can always kill yourself".
- Nope. The gargoyles remain silent.
- Ghost ship was changed from the old traditional ghost ship from Disneyland to the Pirates of the Caribbean version of the Flying Dutchman (so...there you have it, a direct connection to Pirates of the Caribbean at EuroDisney ;P)
- The suit of armour has a special space because an animatronic of Melanie used to be there, inviting people into the house, so it took more space. Unfortunately they changed it in 2019. I liked it better when Melanie was inviting you in but I guess they wanted to avoid an overdose of Melanie.
-The video you used is outdated. The Ballroom scene does NOT play the Disneyland music anymore. It did when it opened after the refurbishment BUT we fans "rioted" and "demanded" the old much superior John Debney score to be put back (we didn't riot. We simply complained at the Park and on social media). And EuroDisney actually acquiesced!
By the end of the week after re-opening, the old score was put back and the US Disneyland music was gone again (thank God!).
- The people in the canyon scene are the ghosts of the people who died in the earthquake that destroyed the original town and killed Melanie's parents. But in the refurbishment Disney went a bit overboard with the shade of green. They used to be a paler tone but I guess it didn't reflect as well with the Dark Lights. Now they look more like zombies.
- The crypts near the end are the tombs of the 4 suitors of Melanie. The last one that's broken has the arm of the final suitor reaching out of it with the wedding ring.
Are you sure the gargoyles aren't whispering? When I went there on october, they definitely were (at least once), though it's really faint and you have to be in complete silence to hear them
I feel like the phantom manor story is the most cinematic of the haunted mansion stories and I kind of hope they incorporate it into the upcoming movie.

I'm glad you like our Paris version and thank you for doign it justice! I must admit, having grown up with this version first before experiencing the American ones, I was disapointed with how clean and nice the buildings looked, and how it was less scary/macabre. I still love all three versions, but Phantom Manor will always be my favourite. At the time this video was recorded (2019) I was actually living in Disneyland Paris for a year as I was working on a movie nearby! I must have ridden Phantom Manor at least 100 times in a year, I often walked back through the parks just as the nighttime shows were on, meaning there were no queues for things like Phantom Manor, Pirates, and Star Tours :D

After all this time I still can't believe that they tried to change the ballroom music to the original American score. Luckily they changed it back after a few days because of the negative reaction of the fans. (You could actually hear the people in the doombuggies next to you react badly to it during the opening event.)
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad score but it just didn't fit the tone of the scene in our version.

Though, to be honest, I'm even more surprised Disney actually listened to the feedback and changed it. That's far from common for them to do.
The crypts right at the end of the ride on the right hand side just before the mirrors are for the suitors that were in the stretching room, they all have names that refer to the way that they died e.g. Ignatius "iggy" knight was the one in the stretching room who was blown up by dynamite. If you look in the video one of the skeleton arms is holding an engagement ring for Melanie!
From what I know, the ghosts that are the same molds as the Dreamfinder, etc, in the town area are meant to represent the dead residents of Thunder Mesa. The entirety of their Frontierland is one back story.
If I remember well, the gargoyles don't wisper. And technically Melanie is "stuck" inside the Phantom Manor. So at the end she doesn't leave the mansion when you go... that is why the more you get to the exit, the less you hear her voice. 😊
But thank you for the love you gave to our french Phantom Manor. It is my favourite attraction in Disneyland Paris 🥰
Wasn't that changed in the recent update in 2019? I know it used to be Melanie guiding you to safety, and you'd receive on last "scare" with the Phantom shaking your carriage/ride vehicle, but from what I've seen in ride-thrus of the updated PM, Melanie is the one who will now appear in your ride vehicle asking you to marry her, and it's meant to be like the Hitchhiking Ghosts with the whole "A ghost will follow you home", so it's now changed to Melanie doing the same.
After 2019 they whisper now
Small correction at the start: the hanging groom you described was removed in 2019, now it's the phantom holding an empty noose for you. Also, the ghost ship portrait is exactly the same as the Flying Dutchman from PotC. You also mentioned how Phantom Manor is one of the only attractions in the park that has been there since the opening, but to be honest, only a few attractions are gone. Also, before the refurb, the final mirror scene showed the Phantom's head above the doombuggies instead of Melanie. After the attic, he was supposed to follow you around and try to stop you: first by digging your grave (right outside the attic), then the open casket with the noose above it (end of the town, right before the mirror). Then where you saw the grave of the 4 suitors, you'd see Melanie's skeletal remains pointing towards the exit to make you escape, but then the Phantom did one last effort to stop you (the old mirror scene). Now, the story is that Melanie went insane after all those years and is now asking everyone who passes her to marry her.
Tony Baxter crushed it again! I can't wait to go next year! This looks like such an amazing attraction!

Falls, (the man in the boat about to tip over the waterfall) is a relative of Dr. Albert Falls (and I guess Alberta Falls) of the Jungle Navigation Company/Jungle Cruise. Whether he is part of S.E.A. or not remains to be seen.
In Paris' Big Thunder Mountain, its founder and owner is Henry Ravenswood, the owner of this manor, not Barnabas T. Bullion. Thus, there's no S.E.A. connection there.

And a little secret : the psycho house look like phantom manor because the first sketches of the haunted mansion by Walt was used for psycho and for phantom manor !
The Phantom Manor is my absolute favorite version of the haunted mansion. The soundtrack and story is beautifully haunted! The visuals and effects alone are amazing. The 2019 update are impressive on the effects! Oh such a good haunted mansion!!
Your timing is uncanny. I'm a big fan, and an American who recently moved to Paris. I'm heading over to the parks this week for the first time. My great-uncle worked on painting the original dark rides at Disneyland, and I hope his happy haunt will be hitchhike along with me. (I am freaking out that I live in a place now where I can take the commuter train from my neighborhood to a Disney park.) Thanks for another fun video :)

I read Tales from the Haunted Mansion volumes 1 and 2 in a long car ride while just listening to Phantom Manor Suite on repeat. It’s so good!!
One touch I like in the modern Phantom Manor is that they alternate between French and English with each line, so both recordings get used

i love phantom manor sooo much. when i lived in paris i would go to disneyland paris at least once every week or two just ride phantom manor, thunder mountain, and pirates. phantom manor is hands down the best disney ride i've ever been on

The names of the four suitors in the stretching room are Iggy Knight, Sawyer Bottom, Barry Claude, and Rowan D. Falls. Tortured puns, obviously, but they do indicate how each man met his untimely end.

It's a spy mirror they used to let the phantom appear. By the way, the Europapark Rust has a Haunted Mansion too called Geisterschloss (Ghost Castle) which is also a copy of the Disney version. "this version of the graveyard is a lot more traumatising to young children". Seriously. I first went when I was 5 and literally had nightmares for months! But hilariously it's not my absolute favourite in DLP. We didn't go back til I was 16 and it was so interesting to see what freaked me out back then haha. Very cool to see the updates and have Vincent Price brought back in. Hope I get to go back soon!

Interesting how there’s Yellow Wallpaper with a unique pattern in the first room… makes me think of a short story about a woman trapped in a house and being tormented
One thing I really enjoyed about this attraction is that lack of narration throughout most of the attraction. Never realized how much better it is to tell the story essentially without saying anything. Of course this is due to the fact that it would be very very distracting to have everything duplicated - once in French and once in English. They keep the vocals down a minimal which is great actually as it allows you to focus on the attraction more. It dawned on me when I visited the Haunted Mansion at WDW after experiencing Phantom Manor at DLP. It was almost distracting to have all of the narration in Florida. I never really noticed it before experiencing Phantom Manor.

Wasn't a huge fan of Disneyland Paris as a whole when I actually visited, but there are some amazing rides and I loved a lot of the theming

I love the idea you have of the reverse in the foyer…enter looking pristine as the outside…then transition to dilapidated…maybe during the Ghost Host’s initial recitation, “When hinges creak….” That would be so cool!!! BUT, it would only work at Disneyland HM as the foyer is simply handled as a pass-through now at Magic Kingdom’s HM…if one of the last to enter in a group, you don’t even hear the first things the Ghost Host says, welcoming you…sigh.
That’s pretty much just because of covid, when i went recently we had the foyer scene
@@kedanmacken2421 it may also have to do with crowds, as two weeks ago, when entering toward the end of the group, we passed quickly through the foyer into the portrait chamber as the initial narration was ending, and later at the front of the group entering, the narration began before the foyer was filled and the portrait chamber doors opened before entry doors closed and narration finished.

I wonder if some elements of Phantom Manor were inspired by Poltergeist 2. The rides western theme with the Freeling family living in Phoenix Arizona. The part where guests descended under the graveyard looked like where they in where their former house was.

While I may be jealous of my american friends for having all the cool original US Disney parks, I am still extremely glad I am able to experience rides like this and our unique version of Big Thunder Mountain at DLP. Phantom Manor is nothing short of breathtaking, and it never stops being like that no matter how often I ride it.
I honestly prefer the version before the complete remodeling. The Ghost Town was actually in hell, the phantom became a literal zombie and Melany was a floating corpse above large glowing crystals at the end. I have a lot to say about Disney theme parks these days but unfortunately work has just sapped all my motivation into doing so. The only thing I can say is that somehow the video games department is the only one I fully support given how they gave us Sora for Smash and Pirates of the Caribbean in Sea of Thieves.....which reminds me, you ever going to continue that one? I'd be happy to be a guide given those Tale Tales are the ones I do the absolute most in the game for obvious reasons.
Love this ride but wasn’t mad on the 2019 story changes from one suitor to multiple ones dying (similar to Constance) and she seems to be luring them (the whole will you marry me in front of the mirrors bit)

This is the story of the old version, correct? Bc now she married 4 times and he plans on hanging the 5th one if he should come (as explained in the stretching room)
According to the new backstory (as seen in this video), Melanie was ENGAGED four times, with each suitor dying before the wedding day. The 5th suitor is an interesting question, since Imagineering didn't really clarify whether Jake Evans (the groom/suitor in the old version) is still part of the story or not. I like to think that Jake is still part, which would explain why Melanie wearing a wedding dress and the manor is dressed up for a wedding reception, but he has yet to re-manifest in some way.

Phantom Manor, the version with both French and English narration from the 90s, is the best version of all Haunted Mansions. The version after the 2019 refurb though , is the worst.
