Capers are an unusual superfood loaded with polyphenols. They can be found growing WILD in the Mediterranean and are a food you should be interested in including into your diet.

My mother used to make a Hungarian snack for us when we were kids. Cottage cheese, not the wet creamy kind, the drier version, mixed with a bit of sour cream, finely diced onion, paprika, lots of capers, salt and pepper. We ate it on fresh rye bread like it was candy!! It was called Turo!
Yes, I didn't know they were so good for you.. I think I'll use my Capers for Chicken Picata They Reduce Blood Pressure & Are Good For Blood Circulation helps with heart diseases Reduce Inflammation
I make a three bean salad with red onions, steamed English peas and string beans and capers each week to have with my lunch. With a mustard vinaigrette dressing, Excellent!
One of the reasons my wife married me was because I had capers in my refrigerator. She thought that indicated class & a knowledge of cooking. Nah. I just liked them with lox & bagels.
I have an adventurous palate, and am always open to learning about food. I have a jar of capers in my fridge, but did not know their true value. Guess I will have to incorporate them in dishes that I prepare, and get ready for my picky wife to question them. She turned the kitchen over to me two years ago, on our 50th wedding anniversary!
LOL! When I married almost 50 years ago, my wife knew nothing of cooking. I had been cooking since I was 8 years old and had to teach her how to use MY kitchen. She became a great cook in her own right during our 45 years together...
This was lovely…I really enjoyed how the info was plant specific with proper genus names, plant pictures and correct terminology about what makes capers so special in their structure. Kudos!!
Never thought to put them on pizza. I first learned about them in a restaurant I used to work at. They were lightly chopped up and mixed with the chicken salad mix, along with mayo, mustard, onion, celery, herbs de provence paste, and salt and pepper to taste.
One of the best things I ever had was capers as a garnish on carpaccio. They were deep fried and sprinkled with salt and gave such a wonderful texture to the dish, as well as being delicious, even though I am not quite as fussy on the brined variety right out of the jar.
Yikes!,, No need to add salt- some people even rinse them, although it doesn’t really remove much of the salt. Try them browned or even blackened in butter and add them on top of sautéed flounder or sole. (Martha Stewart) Really, really fantastic! I often serve it to guests and everyone totally raves! For less salt use unsalted butter, but I always use salted.
These are found in many Hispanic recipes as well. I add these to baked fish, sauted ground beef/turkey with olives, rices, and soups. It adds a robust flavor. Just a spoonful is enough for a big pot.
I eat capers as a relish, like I do pickles and olives. Remove the salt?😳 no way! Just cut back somewhere else, like cheese and added salts. How do I eat them? With my fingers😂 I use them in many sauces but really like them best as a garnish for fish or just eat them like others eat popcorn. Yummmm
Isn't that interesting. I've photographed those flowers around Tzfat any number of times because they are so lovely, on the way home from buying my capers at the supermarket!
I make a wonderful gravy with paprika and capers and the caper juice that I serve over Weinerschnitzel. I also use capers in my Chicken Piccata! Both delicious dishes!
Wow! Who wooda thunk it...??? I use Capers all of the time. I buy huge jars of them from Greece. They are an automatic in my Greek and other salads. Then, I have heard that it's against the law, in some countries, to make Bagel & Lox without Capers...lol
Thanks. One ingredient that I never ever bought but had tasted few times in salads. It simply is never on my grocery list due to lack of knowledge on the item. Thanks again.
I was thinking, "I saw recently capers on a list of foods that have a certain beneficial compound... what was it..." and just found out it's *quercetine* . I will start incorporating capers. I think I'm going to put them in my teff pasta with tomato sauce, and see how that works.
Loved this one on a much loved though infrequently eaten ingredient! For whatever reason I didn't know very much about capers, so your video really rounded out my education. Crazy, I never realize they were a flower bud, but now when I think of the texture it makes perfect sense! Have you tried growing your own and if so what were the results? I'd love to taste the fresh one.
@@SuperfoodEvolution "Yet" being the operative word! 😊🌱😊 I think they would look very pretty in a rock garden or maybe even a hanging basket, plus be a nice culinary addition!
Since you didn't mention it once I'll do it for you- Capers #1 health benefit; protecting the body's tissues against oxidative stress and associated pathologies such as cancers, coronary heart disease and inflammation. You're welcome.
Minor correction: the substitute is the seed/fruit of the nasturtium, not the flower bud. Please also check that it's the nasturtium depicted in the video: Latin name Tropaeolum majus. There are other plants called Nasturtium that should not be consumed.
Now I no longer fear them! For years I wondered what the heck they were and what do I do with them. Superfood? Maybe I'll throw some in my green smoothie...🤔
Many years ago, a friend of my brother was cooking dinner and using capers in the sauce. My brother made the mistake of asking him what they were. "Well," said the friend," You know what a capon is, right? Capers are what they remove when they make a rooster into a capon..."
I see them in every grocery store. I tried them in many foods.. No matter what I eat it with it taste wrong. I have no Idea what this could tase good with. The taste is very strong and kills other flavours in food, killing pretty much every meal..

That is so stupid. You can only eat a few, so the benefit is totally minimal.
These are one of those foods that I’m secretly addicted to and while I’ve never done it, I could it a quart jar full no problem.
i just searched up what are capers are and then i went to watch this video 😭

That sounds so delicious!
I will definitely make it, but I'll have it on Swedish crispbread instead.
Very, very interesting, thanks for posting!
Sounds good.
Quark cheese. My father used to make it at home. It has only 3 ingredients: milk, acid, and heat.
I'd add smoked salmon on top
My grandparents were from Spain. They used capers in many recipes, I learned to like them as a child. They used to put them in their sofrito.
I'm late to the game, but good stuff...
Yes, I didn't know they were so good for you..
I think I'll use my Capers for Chicken Picata

I have friends that deep fry them, until crispy as croutons. Fantastic on a salad ! A must!
capers also tenaciously grow in cape breton, canada, it is a hot spot for capers
Nice to know, but am scared of Canada ATM.
I make a three bean salad with red onions, steamed English peas and string beans and capers each week to have with my lunch. With a mustard vinaigrette dressing, Excellent!
Sounds lovely. I love bean salad. Although as a Brit I’m confused as to what “English peas” are.
Sounds great!
@@JulieWallis1963 English peas are also sweet peas.

Capers & Love!
Lox and bagels with capers are great!
I learned to eat capers in Israel, my best friend gave me she made pickles she picked from her garden
Hey... it worked 🤷🏽♂️
Your wife is smart. And I'm certain that you have class and great knowledge of cooking. I remember reading it somewhere.

Thank you. Never having researched it, I always thought capers were some sort of seafood like mussels or something like snails.
So did we!
This was lovely…I really enjoyed how the info was plant specific with proper genus names, plant pictures and correct terminology about what makes capers so special in their structure. Kudos!!

I love capers. Dry toast, pate, diced onions and the just smack the piece face down into a pile of capers. Yum!
Interesting!
Thank you I use them blended in homemade salad dressing and always wondered about nutritional value
I have eaten Nasturtium buds and when I first had a Caper I thought that is what they were. Thanks for the video!
You bet!
Never thought to put them on pizza. I first learned about them in a restaurant I used to work at. They were lightly chopped up and mixed with the chicken salad mix, along with mayo, mustard, onion, celery, herbs de provence paste, and salt and pepper to taste.
Seems to be a thing!
With some anchovies they'd be divine

Same! My favorite dish
I use them several times a week; in scrambled eggs, in stew, in soup, in egg salad sandwiches, etc. Tasty.
I use capers for bagels & lox.
Never knew they could be used for other purposes. I'll try some on my next pizza.
It's Caper mania!

Jeff’s Garden is my favorite brand for capers! I’m so glad you guys highlighted that brand, they have the best flavor and they’re not overly salty.💚🌱
Thank you for that info as I have slightly weak and hyperactive kidneys and really have to watch my salt intake .
Yes that's a good brand.
They are so salty! I have been buying that brand, but I am rinsing the salt off th3m from now on.
I LOVE capers and in fact used them tonight in a Chicken Picatta! Also love them in my egg salad.

I actually eat nasturtium flowers all the time but only discovered capers recently ...my new fave!!
Awesome!
Wonder if the heat/pasteurization will destory the antioxydant/polyphenol?
Now I have to get a teaspoon of capers. I love them drained of their liquid and I eat them like snacks.
