I have 27 1911 pistols, is my favorite platform by far. My best one is a custom full size 45 1911 built by Mark Morris using all Caspian forged parts, damascus slide, Kart barrel. I also have custom built ones from Ted Yost, Larry Vickers, Scott McDougal and Associates, John Yanek, Jim Milk, and several other custom builders. They are basically safe queens, as they cost between $4800 to $6500. My primary carry 1911 is from Christensen Arms. It is flawless, extremely accurate, superb quality, construction, and has one of the best triggers I've ever experienced. Has a Cerakote finish, dark bronze on the slide, graphite black on the frame. It was reasonably priced at $2400. One of my IDPA guns is a 9mm custom built by Cylinder & Slide.
If you can afford it, fine, However there are a lot of high quality guns you can carry, without spending for cosmetics, and uneeded refinements. I have found that I get all the things i need with a reliable, accurate a 1911 pistol needs to be in Dan Wesson, without breaking the bank.
Great video and fantastic to see you guys again! Like you, after decades of 1911 blasting, never worn anything more than replacing a recoil spring. Just nabbed a Colt Heritage 1911 today. 38 super too. Ahhh….blissful happiness.
What a great vid!! Good to see you with your buddy Batjack together. I just bought my first 1911 , a Kimber, which everybody seems to hate. It wasn't cheap being $1200 out the door. As always good to be back in class with you and Batjack JW Thank you!
Happy that the two of you get together from time to time. Especially for a 1911 video. I have two with heavy usage- Dan Wesson PM-9 and a BUL Armory .45; they are my normal match choices. The BUL has something approaching 20K rounds and the PM-9 just over 12K, neither one shows any wear. Both have aggressive G10 grips, Bomar sights and mag wells from Techwell. I like the modern features EXCEPT an ambidextrous safety. As for mags, my choice for match use is the Wilson Elite Tactical and a more recent find--Nighthawk, slightly less money from Primary Arms. I also have many Mec-Gar which really have just as good a record. Over the last few years, I have sold a some 1911s that I didn't like and those less-functional mags went with them. Thanks for producing this video, the 1911 is experiencing (IMO) a resurgence and I believe there is a real interest. Because RUclips changed my name--granddad1911.
I’ve owned more than 250 1911s in the last 55 years. I currently have Wilson Combat, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Sig, STI, S&W, Tactical Steel, Coonan, Colt, And even one Kimber.
Awesome video of some nice 1911s .Y'all work great together and you just have to buy what you can afford. Thanks for the video Icarryone and J.W , Slim.
Having shot both lower end and Higher end I agree with both of you the fit and finish the attention to detail is above and beyond. I to agree on the Wilson Combat magazines I have had lower end ones literally fall apart. Good to see you two at the table
I absolutely love the 1911 and absolutely agree that the higher end pistols are worth every penny. My Defensive Pistol competition gun is a .45ACP Wilson Combat, my EDC is an Ed Brown .45ACP Kobra Carry, and my wife's competition gun is a 9mm Wilson EDC X9. They are amazing pieces of functional ART. And Wilson Combat's customer Service Dept. is the very best in the biz. I suppose I can appreciate a modern plastic fantastic - like I can appreciate a Honda Civic. But I'd rather drive a Bentley. 😎👍
Great video! I have a Metro Arms American Classic 2. Its great. Does what I need it too. Works well. Its more than what Im capable of telling the difference with.
I have colt, Springfield, ria. I personally think that bul armory is absolutely killing it. I bought two 3.25 lightweights in 45 and I'd take them over anything else I own. I've seen people that have dan wesson say they wish they tried bul first, would have saved them a bunch of money.
I think Springfield 1911s are a great bang for the buck. That said I do own a supergrade. It's my grail gun. I do shoot it but it's a rare occasion. When I do carry a 1911 it's my Springfield and I have shot many rounds through it and I have the utmost confidence in it. Wish I hadn't traded my combat commander in on the wilson but I needed to take some of the sting out of that price. I'll pick up another some time.
I've been shooting all my life and have always loved the 1911 but just never got around to picking one up, until now. I just recently purchased a Dan Wesson Pointman 45 and could not be happier or more impressed with it. It definitely wasn't cheap and I had to save up for a while to afford it and even though it cost more than three times what I paid for my EDC Beretta it was very much worth it. The fit and finish is outstanding and it shoots like a dream. There's just something completely timeless about the 1911, after all it wouldn't still be popular after more than a century if it wasn't anything less a work of genius. RIP John Moses Browning and thanks for some of the greatest firearms ever produced.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all have perspectives on that. Great points in this discussion. We all make decisions on how to approach this hobby. If someone wrinkles their nose at the costs associated, well that's ok. I don't collect, I like great designs. All get used and maintained. I know people that collect things that spend far more. I'm talking to you baseball cards folks. Don't get me started on the latest digital rights nonsense to a picture. At one point in my life I played Golf. You sure get out and loose focus on the everyday pressures of life. Look at the buy in for that sport. Every firearm manufacturer gets in business to make a profit. Its not a hobby to them. I hope they make good decisions to be remembered for having produced something of value to others. Great Vid that made me reflect.
Thanks for this one. I've always been interested in 1911's. My father disliked them for various reasons, I think that lead to my fascination with them. My first was a Kimber, so-so gun, my fav now is an old 1914 manufacture date, military. My Turnbull mfd, is beautiful, but not very reliable. I have now ordered the ultimate, in my opinion, a Supergrade from WC. should get it by the end of this year. Thanks both of you for the vid.
So, I thought I'd tell the tale of 3 "1911s". First one is a replacement for one I gave up 40 years ago. I had a Combat Commander type in all stainless from Randall. My wife at the time wanted to grease a business associate with a gift and the Randall went away. It's been replaced by a full size that rides with me occasionally. Historically, the Randalls were the first all stainless 1911 pattern pistols. Mine is effective and reliable. It's going to my son pretty soon. He gifted me with a coincidental pistol a few years ago. Had to be expensive, a Kimber stainless in Combat Commander variant. Those are the two 1911s I own. Supplementing them is my Smith and Wesson 4506 that feels real good in hand. Shoots very well for me. Lastly, this is about how junk can be made to work with very little effort. In the middle '80s, I was a mechanic in a small shop here in the Valley. One of the owners brought a basket case 1911 in and asked if I could get it operational for him. I made no promise, other than that I would make my best effort on it. It was a pile of odd parts of unknown origin. The grips would hang on the frame, but easily fall off. The slide gritted back and forth and didn't feel like it was retracting far enough. I took it apart and the recoil spring was absolutely junk. The bushing threads in the grip frame were wallowed out. I went to a gun show at the Coliseum and obtained a surplus spring and barrel bushing to reassemble the slide and barrel to the frame which had no brand marking other than El Monte, CA at the bottom side of the frame. I did the only thing I could do to secure the grips. Cleaned the frame and grip screw bushings with brake cleaner and mixed up a little dab of JB Weld and put the bushings in the frame. Let them set for a day and put the pistol back together. The slide moved smoothly on the frame and the trigger and hammer functioned normally with the safeties doing their jobs. Grips were tight and the pistol felt great. I put a magazine in the chute and found a new problem. The JB Weld encroached in the magazine well, jamming it from going in. Fortunately it was easy to cure. Slipped a thin file in and smoothed down the bumps. Bingo. I didn't want to live fire it in my backyard, but I took it to work and turned it over to its owner who fired a couple test rounds in the back of the shop, ending the life of an old motorcycle gas tank. He was elated with the resurrected basket case. I still don't know what the frame was, but the slide was WW2 Remington Rand.
I think Dan Wesson is a "Neglected" 1911. I also agree with the person who says a $500.00 RIA is a good gun. It was wonderful as a carry gun for me. Just heavy in 45 ACP for me but I loved her!
I used to carry a wonderful handgun by Ed Brown. Now, only occasionally, because if I "use" it, I might never get it back. * I carry a Sig 1911 (model RCS) a lot now. You'd be surprised at the accuracy from this handgun. I agree with you in reference to the Dan Wesson 10mm
Ive only used the Wilson Combat Vickers magazines that hold 8 rounds and only have 1 witness hole. They work 100% of the time in my Colt series 80 Government model .45. I bet the other Wilson magazines work great too!

Guys great video. I normally carry D/S actions or my standard polymer striker fire handguns. But, I love my 1911’s and I got several of them which I love to carry on winter time with OWB holster and my coat. Question, do you guys carry them with kydex or leather holster for less slide wear. Thanks and have a great day!
The sheer beauty of it all is that we are truly spoiled for solid choices in which most of us do not have to remotely justify spending the money for either a Wilson Combat, Les Baer or Dan Wesson. This without having to resort to an imported 1911 like say a RIA, Tisas, Bul or Girshan. No disrespect to anyone but I picked up a stainless steel Springfield Armory 1911 .45ACP Loaded like a little over 3 years ago at the end of 2019 for just $725 and I’m over the moon with its flawless performance with over a thousand rounds. It’s got a forged steel frame, slide and barrel that there’s no way in hell I’ll ever wear it out. As such, I’m convinced that there are plenty more mid-tier 1911 Made in the USA 🇺🇸 in the thousand dollar to $1,500 range made by Springfield Armory, Colt and perhaps even Remington that will more than do the job and then some before one feels the itch to resort to the semi-custom and custom 1911s. In the end of the day one might be spending a bit more than your average polymer striker fire but you can still acquire a lot of 1911 without having to even spend a thousand dollars. FWIW
Like your videos but you can keep your high end 1911s. I just bought Tisas Stakeout for 380, including shipping and FFL. Forged barrel, slide, and barrel. No MIM. Hardened then machined. Frickin’ great. 5.5 pound trigger could be fixed for cheap. I’ll take ten of them thank you!
I’ve had a number of 1911’s of various prices. I’m interested in reliability & I’ve had a 500$ RIA that provided that for carry & home defense. That being said the bells and whistles for show & range toys are an individual preferences.
The RIA is the low low end in the Philippines .the Metro arms and shooting sports arms are the top in the Philippines. I have several Metro arms 1911s called the American classic and the fit and finish is so good it can go head to head with all the American made 1911s but for a fraction of the cost. I have 3 the American classic government and the American classic 2 and the American classic Bobcut
That's right the Wilson combat mags are the top especially the 10rd. When I carry concealed I have the 10rd Willson as a backup. So the 8rd Willson is in the gun and the 10rd are for backup
Definitely not worth it to everyone, and I completely understand that. To me, they are worth it. I’ve got a few higher end 1911s and I’m very happy to have them.
there are always different camps got to have all the bells and whistles and the others like myself believe you do not have to spend big bucks for 1911s. The affordable companys have nice GI models and their bells and whistles do not cost an arm and a leg on the upgraded models if you want to spend the bucks more power to you. Remember you take care of your carry it will take care of you
Find one lightly used and save some serious coin, and then YES, absolutely they are worth the money. A Wilson Combat or a Nighthawk Custom is 100% worth it.
In my opinion there is definitely a point of diminishing returns in the world of high end 1911s. They are very good, but $5000 good? I am not so sure. I mean, if you can afford it, more power to you I guess, and I guess that's what it comes down to.
I own Wilson's Ed Brown, Guncrafter, Nighthawk, Dan Wesson and others, when you think about it, a $3,500 to $4,000 semi-custom is a pretty amazing value including their lifetime of support
The good news is when you purchase a high end 1911, it kills your desire for all of the cheaper guns, and you will save money. The bad news is you will want higher end 1911s! They are like potato chips; you can't eat one.
If you are using one for defensive purposes and are involved in a defensive situation you will lose that gun possibly forever or if you are lucky enough to get it back no telling the condition. So choose wisely my son.
Yeah I guess yure wright let me get that 5000.00 Wilson combat so god forbid when I defend my self and that cool pistol is confiscated some cop can add it his collection for free. I support the thin blue line. It’s only money no big deal. Are you pickin up whut ahm putin down?
I personally think "my" life is worth a lot more than the price of a Wilson Combat - even If I never got it back! (MY life, my gun & my opinion.) That said, you do you Thomas.
My Rock Island 1911 with a Sig magazine and Wilson Combat recoil spring runs as good as any higher-end 1911, with less than $50 worth of upgrades......
Plainly put, my RIA's (plural) are a good value for the money - but they can't compete with the reliability and accuracy of a Dan Wesson or Wilson Combat! That said, rest assured that my response is based on many years of "hands on" experience - and are most certainly not based on a single example.
No 1911 is worth what Wilson Combat charges. If you have the bucks go for it but I prefer a much cheaper and just as accurate 1911 such as the Springfield Armory pistols.
I can't really disagree - it's kinda like deciding whether or not to marry a super model or the girl next door. Once you turn out the lights can you really tell the difference?
Yeah you can go even cheaper with the Metro arms 1911s made in the Philippines .over there it's the top 1911 maker follow by Shooting Sports arms and Rock lsland arms. Check them out its called the American classic
In my opinion No. The 1911 is a great gun and for a long time a great Weapon. Will it still work as a weapon? Of course. Does it make sense now? No. There are just way better options at a lower price point than even a moderately priced 1911. The.pricier ones don't do anything a good quality one will do and most of them not even as well. I own one a Chinese Norinco I bought back when they were available. A very fine 1911 and a good GUN. A gun, something too shoot for enjoyment, historical nostalgia etc. I see no need to spend anymore than you can get one of the good Turkish Models for though.

But, I love my 1911’s and I got several of them which I love to carry on winter time with OWB holster and my coat. Question, do you guys carry them with kydex or leather holster for less slide wear. Thanks and have a great day!
Personally, I preferer leather - OWB - and the occasional shoulder rig, of course.
Modeling them sexy pistols at the end is 🔥👍🏻
Gun porn? 👀!!
FWIW
I don't necessarily disagree. 👍🤠
One of these days I'll have to add a 1911 to my collection.
Excellent Idea!
Nothing wrong with your choice. I have a Tisas myself and have no complaints.
I’ve had a number of 1911’s of various prices. I’m interested in reliability & I’ve had a 500$ RIA that provided that for carry & home defense. That being said the bells and whistles for show & range toys are an individual preferences.
👍🤠
The RIA is the low low end in the Philippines .the Metro arms and shooting sports arms are the top in the Philippines. I have several Metro arms 1911s called the American classic and the fit and finish is so good it can go head to head with all the American made 1911s but for a fraction of the cost. I have 3 the American classic government and the American classic 2 and the American classic Bobcut
@@TheRealZJE313cool story, bro
There is something magic about a gun that looks good, feels good, and works good. As long as a 1911 works, that's going to be the case
I've been subbed 4 EVER yet I got lucky and saw this...
👍🤠
That's right the Wilson combat mags are the top especially the 10rd. When I carry concealed I have the 10rd Willson as a backup. So the 8rd Willson is in the gun and the 10rd are for backup
👍🤠
I think John Browning took care of the bases, nice to hone things, but it's hard to improve on perfection
Definitely not worth it to everyone, and I completely understand that. To me, they are worth it. I’ve got a few higher end 1911s and I’m very happy to have them.
👍🤠
there are always different camps got to have all the bells and whistles and the others like myself believe you do not have to spend big bucks for 1911s. The affordable companys have nice GI models and their bells and whistles do not cost an arm and a leg on the upgraded models if you want to spend the bucks more power to you. Remember you take care of your carry it will take care of you
👍🤠
Find one lightly used and save some serious coin, and then YES, absolutely they are worth the money.
A Wilson Combat or a Nighthawk Custom is 100% worth it.
👍🤠
In my opinion there is definitely a point of diminishing returns in the world of high end 1911s. They are very good, but $5000 good? I am not so sure. I mean, if you can afford it, more power to you I guess, and I guess that's what it comes down to.
You're right, it does come down to that for most people.
Wish I could afford a Razorback!
I hear you. 👍
I own Wilson's Ed Brown, Guncrafter, Nighthawk, Dan Wesson and others, when you think about it, a $3,500 to $4,000 semi-custom is a pretty amazing value including their lifetime of support
👍🤠
If the two of you can double check that I'm in your Will's Id appreciate it.😊
👍😁
The good news is when you purchase a high end 1911, it kills your desire for all of the cheaper guns, and you will save money. The bad news is you will want higher end 1911s! They are like potato chips; you can't eat one.
Their definitely worth the money if you have it
If you are using one for defensive purposes and are involved in a defensive situation you will lose that gun possibly forever or if you are lucky enough to get it back no telling the condition. So choose wisely my son.
For the love of God, if you must defend yourself, never do it with a cheap ass gun. it's undignified!
Just what CNC machining adds is more reasonable 2011 and 1911.
Could you edit this comment to make sense please? Thank you.
Camry vs Mercedes. For some, it’s worth it, for some it isn’t.
👍🤠
What!!!!!! Camry hell no . Old Chevrolet vs Mercedes
A Toyota will always be better than a Mercedes if you plan on keeping it for any meaning amount of time 😅
With all that being said, you'd rather be in a shooting than a gunfight end of story.
Faster no smoother yes. Fram to slide fit also has nothing to do with accuracy.I don't see anything custom about about any of these guns.
Hey old timer let me start off with these 2 words...
That there is some nice pistol! 45 dam sure better pun intended!
👍🤠
If anyone figures out how to take their favorite handgun with them, let me know.
You do realize, that if you pass away, your favorite firearm suddenly becomes an orphan! 👀!!
Please, please do not demonstrate the birthday suit carry!
What do you think this is? Only Fans? 😲!!!
High end 1911's are worth the money if you can afford them.
👍🤠
No 1911 is worth what Wilson Combat charges. If you have the bucks go for it but I prefer a much cheaper and just
as accurate 1911 such as the Springfield Armory pistols.
I can't really disagree - it's kinda like deciding whether or not to marry a super model or the girl next door. Once you turn out the lights can you really tell the difference?
You get what you pay for and yes there is a big difference between a Wilson Combat and a Springfield.
There's nothing wrong with letting your wallet be your guide.
@@Icarryone Being smart with money is not just for the average man. Rub a dub dub four billionaires in a tub. Just because someone has money does not excuse being stupid with it. While everyone has a right to be as stupid with money as they want, the world just saw a lesson in why you shouldn’t ever do something just cause you can.
Seriously 😂
