I'm a retired saw filer and did the job for 21 years in a big sawmill on the west coast. Wonderful work, Grandpa. You are one of the keys in the operation.
Always nice to see Grandpa appearing in a video. I have no idea what a new blade costs, how much lumber it would mill on 1 sharpening so what that would equal for 3-4 sharpenings. It's things like this that take a business from marginal to profitable pretty quickly. Nice video, thanks
I remember when you first got this machine and Grandpa was test driving it and learning as he went. He’s got much more practice now. Too bad that you can not re sharp en the carbide blades also.
Discussions over dinner are Grandad saying that all blades need to be sharpened to save money, and Dad saying that carbide blades can't be sharpened, and yet they last longer and save money, and amid these differences of opinion and proofs of right and wrong, the business goes on and the womenfolk smile and look beautiful.
I loved my Grandpa, he was the best man to me, even my dad was not better, hold him and get truth from him,, absorb, many years later and comments will fill your head, it is wisdom !
Sounds like the blade alignment and sharpener is a money maker. No more buying new blades because of dullness. Three or four or more uses saves thousands of dollars over time. Excellent review.
money saver. Dullness causing replacement went out the window long ago IMO. Broken teeth or weld, yes. Memory from here is 1 blade a day, maybe 4 resharpenings of a good blade. Yes DHG, over time, a smart move.
@@bdickinson6751 Cute about getting into trouble. We know from all the hours watched there is a good family work ethic. I assume grandpa is on Dad's side. At least he adapted and isn't using the old machine.
Grandpa you are a Gem, I love a machine that will do a job precisely, Woodmizer should use you for training others if you wanted to do that. Some one else said too bad you couldn't sharpen carbide blades on it but after I spoke with Ken about it I can see why Carbide wouldn't be feasible to sharpen. Great Job Grandpa! John From Toccoa GA
Woodmere should sponsor your videos like this if they don't. The knowledge, the use, honestly about their products would very useful to Sawyers looking for similar setups.
@charlesjohnsjr.5809 they don't but they sort of do now. The family was invited to work at the woodmeizer booth at, I think Paul bunyeon? Event recently so they seem to be finally taking the work relationship to the next level :) maybe future sponsorships.
Congrats on 150+k subs. Seems it jumped from 149 to 151k in no time. Hope that's a trend. Your followers seem very loyal. You should ask them to share your channel. It seems the algorithm is doing fewer random recommendations these days. Or maybe it's just that there are so many channels that the chance of being picked as an outlier rec has become low naturally. That means more explicit sharing is needed for channels to grow.
Do mills use big buzz saws anymore? We had a sharpening shop in the 80's and used all Foley equipment and sharpened every thing from knives, chainsaws, circular saws, carbide tips, hand saws and buzz saws ect.... Dad had contracts with construction outfits.
I haven’t seen any of your videos in a while. I just kinda got out of the habit and have been busy on other things, but WOW! Your video production skills are really getting good! I had to do a double take on what I had just clicked on, because for a second I thought I might have clicked on an official Wood Mizer promotional video. Very nice work! Keep it up!
Excellent investment, that sharpener will easily pay for itself, then it will be like printing money💸. Oh, and by looking at grandpa's hair and eyes, I see where you young ladies got your genes 😉❤
Would love to see a closeup of how it actually sharpens the blade! Was there another metal that holds its sharpeness longer or can be re-sharpened more times than a standard blade? I wonder how many saw mills with yourachineru do not resharpen.their blades. Pull some decent blades out of their.scrap piles?
last couple of months, the old machine was shown in operation. Decent blades go into the resharpen pile, not the scrap pile. Another video mentions 5 types of blades but little scientific info is shared to answer your questions
: grand pa is so cool, he doesn't mind wearing gloves. not like kids these days, too shy to do everything even wearing protective gloves 🧤 - splinter comments
I thought the boss did a video recently about paying the higher price of carbide blades (which lasts 4 times longer but cost twice as much) because its worth it in terms of saving time in not having to swap blades so often, and time equals more board feet milled, and more board feet equals more money, which compensates for the higher cost of the blades. So are you going back to steel blades?
Always better to have a backup then equipment sitting around costing you money. Couple of post with nails could stop your whole production if you don't have backups. Most likely what they would use the steel blades for, you don't want to use the expensive carbide blades on that stuff.
@@tittyskillet3413 They have a video demonstrating that a hand held metal detector was of no real use. While I admit to not having all the economics of one kind of blade vs. another understood yet: the effective cost of their blades right now is likely the cost of the resharpening because they are using a vary big pile of blades that were used just once years ago and tossed into a big pile. Grandpa is able to bring those blades back to life!!!

I sharpen my own chain saw blades, but I would enjoy the sage of Grandpa or Dad on their tips for chainsaw sharpening!!
Great video! My grandfather operated a sawmill back in the 30s and 40s. I actually got to see one of the big sawblades they used.

TY Grandpa. I know it takes You to keep it all going and costs down.
