Inspiring! And so helpful having the voice explaining as the project unfolds. Thank you. Some folks leave out that very very vital part, I never understood that.
Exactly!! I don't like videos that just play music to entertain you. Nope, let's talk through the project to see and hear the thought pattern of doing each step. Thanks for watching! 😀
It is the same exact model that Charles Schultz drew “Peanuts” on. I have one exactly like it that I draw house plans on still. Thank you for the video.
Exactly!!! Safer products are the way to go. I used to use whatever I could find at my local HD or Lowe's, but they don't have as many eco-friendly options, or at least, not that I've seen. And eco-friendly is where things are going. The only thing is to make sure you plastic off the section where you're sanding, and wear a dust mask. :) But yes, everything can be done inside!
When my little brother was about three, he found a straight pin and etched his name into the top of Mom's mahogany sewing cabinet, complete with a backwards J for James. She was livid but over time it became a sentimental reminder of him when he was a three-year old. Aw. Your table came out gorgeous -- it would make a wonderful dinette table for two, a homework table or craft table. If for crafts, you could cover it with a vinyl tablecover you thumb tack underneath the edges.
I have the same exact table and have been meaning to give it a makeover for years. You laid out the perfect blueprint to do so! Thank you and keep up the good work!
Girl, yeeeessss! LOL. I love me some Golden Girls! I watch them from start to finish about twice a year. Just finishing up yesterday and I miss them already. They're like my best friends. HA!
I just bought the same one! I want it a darker tinge as well to match my other antiques. This was the oldest I could find. Such a high quality table in comparison to what they sell today.
Hi Serena, super job on your drafting table. Whenever i use a scraper, especially a broad scraper, I hold the scraper with two hands and pull it towards me. This helps me avoid gouging the surface and causing damage. When you're pouring a liquid out of a container with an offset spout, try holding the container with the spout uppermost to prevent the glug glug effect. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it works for me. Give it a go. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. :)
That’s where I’m going wrong - I should be watching Golden Girls while working on projects! Great job, Serena! Kind regards from Penny in Liverpool 🇬🇧😊💕
Thanks, Evelyn! YESSSS, those stools need a complete makeover, too! I will do those for sure. Or scrap them and find some more modern ones that fit with the space. :) Thanks for watching!!
Thank you, Ricky!! I absolutely adore it! Today the kids and I had to film a project at that table and I was so protective of it that I layered it with cardboard and paper, so that they're hammers didn't dent the top. LOL. I was adamant that they would NOT ruin this refinish job!
@@ThriftDiving You’re welcome Serena!! Yes I concur, you have to protect that investment you put your time into! Plus they knew that finish has to stay in tact lol. Always great inspiration from your channel! 💯
1. does the Blue Bear Soy Gel product have orange in it? 2. Don't you have a car buffer that attaches to a drill? Seems that would be one way to buff the wax. 3. loved the way this drafting table came out!! God bless
Amy is correct--no orange in it. I do have a car buffer but I'm not sure where it is. I will see if I can find it and give it a try! So glad you like it, Edie! :) Thanks for watching!
This video is perfect for me because I am buying a drafting table almost exactly like this and it already comes disassembled and so I was worried I wouldn’t have any idea how to put it back together but this video is going to help me with that I think :) and also on how to refurbish it because it does need a lot of tlc but it will look amazing at the end
Fabulous job Serena. I would be so paranoid that after taking the table apart for stripping that I would NEVER be able to put it back together correctly.
Breakers in your house could include several rooms and have a lot on one circuit. In your garage, it's typically single circuit receptacles. That could be why your breaker tripped in the house. A sander can be a high demand tool.
Franmar has great products. Spectacular end result Serena!!! Love it. I've been waiting to do my dining room table for a while now. This is going to be my go to video for sure sunshine. Thanks for all you do. 🌞💚🥰
That's a total thrift store find!! :) I did a blog post about it years ago, which you can read more about here: thriftdiving.com/before-after-card-catalog/
I have this exact table from my childhood with a janky leg that needed repair as well as the same surface treatment you gave. Can you share the videos and pictures you had to put it back together?
Girl, yaaaassss....I love me some Golden Girls!! I literally watch all the way through about twice a year. And it's so refreshing to watch, even though I have seen it probably hundreds of times. LOL. So funny how the humor has transcended me from my teens into my 40's! :)
I have one from the 70's that is similar. Never knew they were going to hundreds of dollars, or I would have sold mine. Now days, I see them by the dozens for dirt cheap.
Thank you so much, Rhonda!! I am quite pleased it looks so good. Even the kids can't believe it and have said they like it! That's a big compliment coming from them! :)
HAHAHAHA!!! OMG, I have never heard that but how fitting!!! Funny, too, that I found one of the kids had drawn a smiley face on the lower level of the base, which I discovered while dismantling it. HA!
@@ThriftDiving My son patina'd :) my coffee table with a sharpie and included his name. Morale to this story: Hide your sharpies, but regularly check for cobwebs. You never know what happiness a cobweb search will bring! BTW, Your drafting table turned out beautiful!!
Yeah, drafting tables are often used for x-acto knife work so you can get deep gouges and slits in the wood. Also inks, paints, glues and so on. So you do have to do some major sanding.
Yes, they've got a selection of eco-friendly stains. I have used some of their other ones and felt the other ones were a bit spotty. But the ones I used give deep color. :)
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, instead of all the stains, they FUMED it in huge kilns to make it darker and browner! Thaw process penetrated 3/4” or more into the wood!
That's very interesting! I've never heard of this before. I've recently seen people use torches to burn lines or shapes into their wood art/creations. Thank you!!

Ooh, really! Maybe it depends on the brand. I see them cheap in Amazon, but the real vintage ones, like the Anci Bilt ones, are the ones for hundreds.
@@ThriftDiving no these are the older non Amazon kinds, mostly on Facebook marketplace. Not sure if people know what they have.
