Oklahoma really got a raw deal playing wvu that year. That wvu team was far and away a national title team and it was only because of the Pitt loss that we didn’t get in, so much talent on that wvu squad.
I have no doubt we would've thumped Ohio St. in the national championship game as Illinois gave them fits and their attack was nowhere near as dangerous.
I've never been a WVA fan exactly, but I was enamored with this team in 07. The craziest year in college football, and that offense with White, Slaton, Devine, and Schmidt was the most fun offense I've ever watched. That Pitt loss still bugs me as a non-fan 15 years later... this WVA team deserved a shot for the natty.
Eric Barth I’m a Bengals fan, so I have seen plenty of painful losses. None of those can compare to that Pitt loss though. I was stunned. I was depressed. Then angry.
Joe Johnson I’ve never seen the emotions described so well. Stunned, depressed, & angry in that order. EDIT: as a Steeler fan I sincerely hope to see the Bengals turn it around
I'm not an Oklahoma fan I live in Tennessee. However, I am a college football fan with a good memory and I remember in the early parts of OU under Bob Stoops, they always had a shut down defense. Even in games they would lose, the defense would keep them in it. That's how they won that 1 National Championship against FSU. Then came that National Championship game where they got shredded left and right by USC and gave up 55. They were really never the same defensively after that. They followed that USC loss by giving up 43 to Boise State and their gimmicky offense 2 years later. They got absolutely gashed by the Mountaineers in this bowl game giving up 48. By 2008 they were an offensive led team with a shaky defense. Stoops' later Sooners squads really never were quite the same or had the same identity. This game by West Virginia was pretty much the nail in the coffin about the vaunted "Stoops defenses". They just became another Big 12 fun and gun team. Certainly talented and fun to watch offensively but not a real championship team.
To me their defense was never the same when they lost to Kansas St in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game, felt Mike Stoops was distracted after he got the Arizona job. WTF do I know
This was a great game, I remember watching it. All the hype about WV centered on Slaton and White but I think it was the Defense that really won it for WVU!
That throw to Tito Gonzalez is the GOAT. Pat was falling down and he hits him perfectly on the back shoulder pad where only he can get it. Unreal, Tito gliding untouched into the end zone is awesome too.
WVU could've won the national championship that year if rich fraud didn't up and leave them in a rivalry game.... it was hard to stop white-slaton-owen-devine ... and WVU defense was very very underrated in 07 i think we was top 10 in every major defensive category...
At the time this game was played, no one figured that these teams would eventually become conference rivals. But when Pitt and Syracuse, two long-running Big East members, were accepted into the ACC, West Virginia wanted out of the Big East too. They applied to the SEC, but they said no. So, West Virginia was soon targeted by the Big 12. The Big 12 was about to lose Texas A&M to the SEC, and they convinced TCU of the MWC to reverse their acceptance into the Big East and join the Big 12 instead. As it became apparent that Missouri was also gonna leave the Big 12 for the SEC, the Big 12 reached out to WVU, who readily accepted the invitation to join beginning 2012. But the Big East was determined to make WVU adhere to the waiting period of 27 months. A legal battle followed, but eventually both sides settled and the Big East let WVU leave for the Big 12 in 2012. Since then, OU and WVU have met every year, as the Big 12 plays a 9-game round robin conference schedule, which they first adopted in 2011 after Colorado and Nebraska left. The Big 12 had not had a round-robin conference schedule since 1995 before 2011. That year the Big 12 was still called the Big 8. Upon the entrance of the 4 small market SWC schools, the Big 8 became the Big 12 and split into two divisions.
The way WVU ran offense back then is similar to how a lot of teams today with speed combined with the spread. OU at this time period looking back was just not equipped to deal with an offense like that back then as most teams were not yet spreading you out with the combo of speed
Hate to admit it, but Steve Slaton woosed on this game “saving” himself for what was to be a failed NFL career. Mom’s, don’t let your kids leave college early for $$$ dreams.
I still contend that this WVU team was the best team in the nation that year. Just one (or two if you count the USF loss) slip ups killed their national championship hopes
If I was a WVU fan, I would view this game as nothing more than a consolation prize. Because I'm still scratching my head as to how did this team allow themselves to fall to a 4-7 Pitt. The prize at the end of the road was right there and the Mountaineers instead decided to take a little detour.
If WVU would have played 10% like this aganist Pitt would would have beat them by 28 points. Rich Rod chocked. When WVU was an underdog they won, when they were favored they lost....2006 Louisville, USF/ 2007 USF, Pitt
If you would have told people back then that the shaggy haired kicker/punter would end up with a net worth more than Pat White, they woulda locked u up for being crazy
@@ronaldlamascus1944 oh lol my bad. Im a pitt fan but wvu my #2 team. exciting offense, cool logo, favorite team to play as in ncaa. We beat you 3 out of like 12 games played since 1982 when WVU showed up with Hoss and the boys. Unfortunately, you guys are now gonna be middlings in the SEC.
Where was McAfee in the game that counted the most the Pitt game. How many point blank field goals did he miss when a shot at the national championship was on the line. I am pleased with the results of the Fiesta Bowl but not happy with the dive they took against Pitt and it was a dive. James Keeney
It still amazes me that OU's line had Phil Loadholt (NFL starter from 2009 to 2015), Trent Williams (future hall of famer), and our defense ate their lunch for four quarters. Johnny Dingle would have been so far up Sam Bradford's ass that he would have had to be surgically removed were OU's lineman not holding on for dear life to slow him down. You can see Duke Robinson (72) try to injure Reed Williams (47) at 0:34 seconds by putting his weight on the back of Reed's knee. What a piece of shit. Then you have domestic abuser Brandon Walker on the opposite side of the line. I'm thinking OU's guards were just trash, and their future NFL tackles couldn't pick up the slack for them. ruclips.net/video/cRAeJptlV_c/видео.html
2007-2008 Oklahoma and 2010 are far in away the best eams bob stoops ever had and are better than any of the recent play off teams 2007-2010 teams should have gone 14-0 and the 2008 team would have beat Florida if healthy

And everyone else program in the country is an inferior program and we should just quit playing football in general. Ohio state fans get disappointed at the buckeyes if they don't win more than 21 points. And I drink champagne at every game and act like Rich snobs. If there's one team in the country I would love to see Sucks I would love to see go 6 and 6 ever year it would be Ohio state. And here would a been the big difference between West Virginia win a national championship then LSU a higher state or any other school to Ohio state it's just another championship just another trophy to add to their Impressive resume but to West Virginia it would have felt like the mounier's of finally have a arrived at the pinnacle of college football to of been able to be one of the champions it would have felt like something that WVU fans have been waiting most of their whole lives to see. God forbid the N CAA wants to see a school that has never won championship finally win their 1st one I would boost ratings better than the same old schools.
