- iPhone, iPad, or iPod not showing up on your computer? If your iDevice does not appear in 'My Computer' this method should get your PC to recognize the device like normal.
I'm really happy to find that this video has helped numerous people and continues to do so! Seeing so many people commenting "thanks!" has really made my day each time.
+838Frank just helped me too ;)
+838Frank you have no idea how much this video has saved me haha. everytime i plug in my phone it never shows up so I always have to re do this but had forgotten and had to try and search the internet high and low for your video!
+mariaahhbby I'm glad I could help you (again)!
+838Frank Thank you for your help
My mp3 player is not reading it is changed
Thanks Frank,
I also got to a similar point, but without the phone appearing as a device. and here is what works for me (fixed 3 PC’s like this already with iphone6):
1. when your phone is connected go to the device manager. If you don’t see the iphone in devices but as some apple usb adapter under universal serial bus controller then it is wrong. You should remove it from there.
2. to remove it, click on this adapter and uninstall it. IMPORTANT: also check in the box for “remove files from my pc” checkbox otherwise nothing happens.
3. now unplug and re-plug your phone. Your PC (or at least the 3 I tried) will install it as an iphone device and not as a universal serial bus controller.
4. also important: before you unplug your phone from the PC make sure to safely remove the device otherwise it might go back to this universal adapter state next time you plug it in.
Thank you, Dori Sharon!! This is the ONLY solution that worked for me and now I'm all set.
Finally fixed it!!! Thank you so much Dori :)
hey can't find my phone in the universal serial bus controller as well HELP!!!
YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!
YES. This worked. thanks.
Portable devices doesn't even show up in device manager
+hcnifism It could be more than one thing making it not visible. I would first make sure that it's not hidden in device manager by going to device manager > view > show hidden devices.
+838Frank Hmm it still doesn't show up
+838Frank Aaaand it decides to show up itself overnight. Weird. Maybe it just took forever to recognize it.
+hcnifism find universal serial bus controller instead of portable devices and do it from there
+Fariz Bey you saved the day for me. thanks
I searched high and low and couldn't find anything until your video. So helpful and easy. Cheers for that i can now see my iphone. Thanks a million
[WINDOWS 10]: For people who don't have the 'Portable devices' option in the device manager, for me it was under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' and the first Apple device there.
Also took a bit longer to load and install, perhaps because I'm using a laptop (or because the issue was already fixed on your PC).
Besides that, it worked perfectly, thank you!
+Daniël Stalpers I appreciate you helping out those on Windows 10 with the advice. Thanks for watching!
i dont see it my issue is the phone is disabled i downloaded itunes like the guy said i got the phone from alls i see is usb root hub, standard enhanced pci to usb host controller, standard openhcd usb host controller, and usb composite devices
6 year old video still solving problems. thank you so much bro for this legendary video
The only thing that worked with a little tweak.
Thing is that while the problem exists, you won't find the device under "Portable devices", as shown in video, but rather in USB Controllers - Apple Mobile Device (something like that).
The following part of the guide is totally right - you need to replace driver with Microsoft's MTP USB device (unlike selecting Apple's driver that most guides recommend - that actually makes the problem arise, not solves it). Thanks!
Three years later and it still helping! Helped me tonight actually! Thanks Frankie!
Just a heads up, if you don't have a portable devices folder, look for it under usb drivers, and follow the same steps otherwise. Thank you for the video!
Thanks mate. That's solved it for me.
Found my old ipod while unpacking and it had soooo much good music on it. Wanted to put the library on my pc, but my computer wouldn't recognize it. This video solved my problem on the first try. Now I have all of my old music again. Thanks so much dude!
If you still don't have a portable devices icon after clicking to show hidden content, go to - Control Panel - Uninstall or change a programme - find Apple Mobile Device Support - right click - click repair. Then do what this video says and it should work! :)
Katie Gibson you are a genius!!!! This is what worked for me
it dednt work for me
Your video is still working. I listened and read other solutions before I got to your video. That was a waste of hour or so. I just followed your video side by side to doing it and poof, my cell appeared. Thanks again. Keep putting out solutions, hopefully I will be able to return the favor some day.
but my phone is not even recognized in device manager portable devices, so I can't click on it.
same here. did you found any way??
@@zain670 same
Anyone found solution to not finding device in portable devices?
Same .help pls.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! You saved me a whole freaking night of bloody frustration. For me it appeared under "Universal Serial Bus Controller" and just press on something that has "Apple" on it, if anyone else does not have "portable devices".
You are the real MVP!
YOU SIR, win the best video on youtube award.... Thank you!
you have no idea of how many videos I watched trying to solve this problem, but finally I found your video. thaks a lot
Hey I don't have a 'portable devices folder'. What should I do?
Thanks in advance
David McIntyre i had the same problem. I figured it out, though. What you need to do is:
1 go to device manager
2 click "view" at the top (near file, action, and help)
3 click "show hidden devices
ima fagit Still not showing?
Oppne smash Isn't it just wonderful when shit works find some days and then others it just fucks off and doesn't work? Can't get all my vids/pics off my phone all of a sudden out of nowhere to make room for more :| I'm going hiking today to a cave and going caving but won't be able to take many vids pics now.. fml
David McIntyre For me it was under "Universal Serial Bus controllers>Apple USB Device Driver". I updated the driver on this device and selected "MTP USB Device" just as shown in the video and it fixed my problem.
rbentley42 thanks! that really helps me a lot!
Thanks! This worked!!! I tried so many other options and nothing worked until I watched your video. Apple should hire you!
It wont even show my ipod in device manager! Help!
I have been fighting this stupid problem for months. THANK YOU for one that actually works!!!!!
Been trying to fix this for hours now, and this solved it in less than a minute! Thank you :D
What a life-saver! Sometimes it would show up, sometimes it wouldn't... I've been fighting with it forever! Thank you so much for uploading omg
838Frank hello, I really need help!!.. I am having a hard time trying to fix this issue. When I go to device manager there is no PORTABLE DEVICES in the list. I have a VAIO with windows 10.
Hi! Try finding Universal Serial Bus Controller instead of Portable Devices and take it from there.
i have the same problem, i found Universal serial bus controller but there is no iphone or apple thing related to apple. :c (when i plug my iphone in the pc its charging but it just wont recognize it)
Thanks so much bro, this just saved my grade in my photography class (I use my phone)
karen nope :'c
That worked! It wasn't exactly "iPhone" under Universal Serial Bus Controller, but it did include "Apple". The rest of the steps were the same, and I can now see my pictures on my laptop from my phone. THANK YOU! There was a little scare though... I couldn't see them at first on my laptop. Over on my phone, it asked if I wanted to Allow, Yes, and then I saw them!
For me, the Portable Devices category wasn't present, but I found Apple USB device listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. All the other steps for updating the driver worked perfectly. After updating, the iPhone now shows up under the Portable Devices category and more importantly it shows up in My Computer.
Thanks for getting me on the right track.
It doesn't even show up under portable Devices, and it's a problem on both my win 10 laptop and win 7 tower. I just want to import pics using autoplay but I guess I can't . The compute realizes that it's plugged in, but it doesn't show up under Portable Devices.
Portable devices didn’t show up for me either, but once I clicked on USB on the bottom it worked! Thanks for helping me get to the right place :)
Thanks, but my iPhone won't even show up in portable devices..
Same, have you found a fix yet?
@@joepearce3 Hey, check dori sharon's comment .. it worked for me
PS Fuck Apple. I think they mean to make it a laborious nightmare just to try to get people to buy their shitty ass Mac instead of a Windows machine. Fucking wack. Never seems to work for longer than a few months.
@@joepearce3 I threw my fucking iphone against the first brick wall that fixed the fucking thing.
Over two years later and still working. Thank you!
When I press "Let me click from device drivers in my computer" the MTB USB device doesn't show. HELP please :(.
Go down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and click on that
FHughes2008 then?
OMG! This saved me... I have been sitting here for ages trying to fix it and all the forums bang on about nothing useful. I love you I was so desperate to fix this! Many thanks
Hey! I tried going to the device manager and I don't see portable devices, I clicked on show hidden devices as well and still nothing. My iTouch is being recognized by my iTunes and not by windows but its only syncing enough to copy the diagnostic information, then finishing, not copying anything or backing anything up DX anyone know what I should do?
Tks Frank. Just worked!!! Melissa conect your device n y'll see the portable icon on list
nope you connect the phone but still nothing i have the same issue i believe it could be m motherboard it has been buggy before
I was having this problem. I plugged it into a different port and it worked.
I have the exact same problem.
***** Click on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers drop down, which is on the bottom. Then just click your device and follow Frank's steps from there. :)
Man! Dude you rock! Two years later and it helped me out big time!
Thanks man, it works from the first time :)
+Salim Rashid Glad to hear it fixed the problem, Salim!
You rock! I tried so many other advice and none of it worked. Your solution was so simple and effective. Brilliant. Thanks!
Portable devices does not show up for me in device manager. What am I to do? I am so frustrated.
+Tina Mari I FOUND IT by going to the bus control!! Thank you so much. I was ready to trash this phone. lol.
+Tina Mari Glad I could help you keep your phone :)
+Tina Mari its not showing for me too. bus control??
+838Frank Same problem, no such thing as portable devices. I did find in it USB controllers. But when i install the MTP-driver i get code 10, driver could not start. Halp
I tried all morning to get my PC to recognize my iphone. Your video was the only thing that worked!! Thank you very much
The problem is: I can't find my iphone on portable devices :(
select Universal Serial BUS Controller, then "Apple...", and proceed with the steps he had in this video. Hope that helps.
@@karimdrissi3892 nope
@@zoopy858 I dont even remember writing this ahahhaha
I never even owned an apple device wtf
Karim Ackerman I just wanted to see if you still were on here lmao
You're seriously my hero right now. Thank God for people like you.
(also geez it's 3 years later and Apple still has not fixed the problem, figures)
Simple and right to it. My best guess is the software didn't know how to talk with the software. When I checked my device manger, it had a yellow bang, which indicates the drivers is not working. I did you method and after updating the driver, it recognize my iPhone right away. Great fix!
I cnt find the MTP usb device
Hero amongst men.
People dont get so butt hurt if this didnt work for you, theres a number of things that could be wrong and this is just one.
If I do this iTunes stop recognizing it
Thank you! This worked!
My way to get it appear with iPad Air 2 (works fine still on low battery under 20%) with Windows 10 Pro:
1. Hook in the iPad Air 2 with the cord it came with to 3.0 or 2.0 USB port
2. Go to Device Manager like in the video.
3. Extend instead Universal Serial Hub > Apple Cord (something generic of Apple products, it does not appear under portable devices and detects only the cord itself is the problem)
4. Follow the rest with video instructions.
5. It installs a new driver and voila, my iPad now appears in My Computers and under portable devices in Device Manager as Apple iPad.
I dont have portable devices...
It must be in the USB section
Thank you! I've searched the whole apple site for support and searched so many forums but your solution worked right away!
No! There is nothing in portable devices.... My iTunes sees my iPhone just fine, so it's not like there is no connection. Your solution is not working.
I get the same. Have you found solution?
HA! got it working! In "Universal Serial Bus controllers" I've Unistalled the driver and removed it from the system.
Then, when I plugged Iphone back, it downloaded drivers again and now I have Portable Devices in Device Manager and can see my device in My Computer!
AWESOME! Thanks 838Frank! It wouldn't be possible without your video!
I ended up uninstalling every bit of Apples prograams (of which there are quite a bit), restarting the PC and reistalling iTunes. That fixed it.
yo.. its universal seial bus thingy but it doesnt show me anyting apple related :ccc what do i do
You da man !!!!! This is the only thing that worked ... uninstalling the driver completely , then by reinserting the ipod cable to my computer, it automatically reinstalls the driver. Took 2 attempts but then BINGO ! Thanks Krystian .. and thanks 838Frank !!
If you don't have a "portable devices" option, open up the USB controller tab. I updated the Apple USB software through there and it works. Thanks for the tip Frank!
Thanks a lot. Apples a piece of shit
A freaking genius is what u are! I spend 3 hrs for nothing then ur video 10 seconds DONE! Thanks a lot
Worked! Thank you. I had to do the troubleshooting in the comments to get portable devices to come up and then go through the steps again. Now it's there! THANK YOU!
Still helpful almost 4 years later, thanks.
Thank you so much! Been looking EVERYWHERE for a fix for over a year and finally found one.
Thank you!!! I have been trying to get my photos off for the last hour!! Your fix worked while the ones from Windows and Apple did not!
After several hours of browsing RUclips and Googling about, yours is the only video that has fixed this problem for me! Thank you :o)
I’ve been trying to import my pictures from my iPhone to my computer for the last hour. My iPhone wasn’t showing up, this video just saved my sanity! Thank you so much!! 🙌🏻
After scratching my head through a handful of videos, this one did the trick. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I have been having trouble with my phone and it was driving me cray that I couldn't save my photos to my external hard drive. Now because of you helpful video I am able to get to them! Another tip that I might have found, is that if you have your photos automatically saved to icloud the computer does not recognize them as "new" and therefor gives you a pop-up that says that there are no new photos to download.
Thanks from Australia mate!!!!!! Beautiful simple video, saved my ecology assignment - needed the photos off it, computer wouldn't recognise it, thanks!!
This led me down the right path.... I had to got to device Mgr, but then to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. In there, there was something named "apple ,,,," something... I then followed the advice 838Frank said, and changed the driver from "Apple" to "MTP USB device".. just like Frank did. And it worked fine! I have been trying to fix this for days! Thanks Frank!!!
This advice worked perfectly. Thank you. I have had this issue repeatedly and I never found a simple solution before - even asking IT Dept. Nice.
Amazing. I was all over the internet looking for a fix and I found this video. Thanks a lot man.
Thank you! Even 6 years later, this solved it!
Thank you, Frank! you really helped me bigtime in this one. on my device manager, there was no "Portable Devices" BUT it was listed in the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". i just followed your procedure then BOOM! it was now showing in my My Computer.
worked for me! my computer recognized the device but when i clicked on it - it didnt show any files. did this and all files show up now. thank you!
I had to find my device in a different section but the process itself worked perfectly. Thanks dude!
Dude, thank you so much. I had no idea why my computer was refusing to recognize my iPhone! Problem solved now.
Ok, tanx for this fix! :D
But I got another question... Is there a way to make it look like a USB instead of like a camera?
1. This actually worked thank you so much! 2. Can you tell me what song you have playing in the background, please? I love it!
Thank you!!!!! I had lost all hope until I stumbled upon your video. It worked!!! Thanks again!
you rock, these step works . since I just got off phone apple (advance technical support )and they keep repeating themselves . I was one phone for about 30 mins. when I decided to use some common sense and hang up .
Glad to hear that you were able to sort the problem out for yourself.
Thanks for the HELP! Been 2 years since you uploaded this. Still helps! You just earn a new SUB.
this video still helping me out in 2017, thanks dude.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I didnt actually have a problem with the recognition of the iphone itself by my PC. However my PC didnt show me any IPHONE files on my computer(DCIM)!!! I tried EVERYTHING!!!! Nothing worked!!!
I saw your video and I thought, "what the heck! Lets try this as well!"
IT WORKEDDDDDDDD !!!! FINALY
BAM....you nailed it...thanks for the great video!!!! Your fix was the easiest I've ever seen on RUclips!!!
Thanks man! A lot of these quick fixes i look up for shit never works, but this was actually quick and easy.
Thanks bud it worked! It was a bit different though. It was under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and said, "Apple Mobile Device", then followed your steps an BAM! Works all the time now! Hope this message helps others too!
Been trying to work this out for months and months now, THANKYOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! So so helpful
IT WORKED. if it doesn't show up on portable device go to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
Finally I found the right way to fix this. Thanks for making the video, really helped me out.
mine was under universal usb so anyone still having issues should try looking through everything else under the device man. list works now thanks
Lol it actually worked. Wow. I couldn't figure it out for the longest time. Guys for Windows 10, go to the last section at the bottom and find "Apple Drivers" and click update drivers then its like ADM Driver or something. Works great thanks!
Damn dude, saved my life! The first tutorial that actually helped and fixed 2 of my problems (my iphone was constant disconnecting and connecting and it didn't showed up the folder)!
LIFE SAVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol but honestly.....
but with my iPad i actually had to unplug it and then plug it back in and it pops up!! it hasn't done that for ages!!!! normally i'd have to go to Computer and then hope for a USB port to recognize it and then just double click on the thing but this has helped so much!
thanks again!!!!! :)
Thanks for this! Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't show up as a drive and this solved it!
after 4 years also your tip is working - thank you for this tip
Slightly different options on my laptop but you have enough to give me an idea how to fix, well done great video 👍🏼
So this is 2019 and your fix is really old, but it's the only thing that worked for me!! Thank you!!
Take ALL the Upward Facing Thumbs! Seriously, this video has saved me from chucking my iPod through the wall more times than I can count! lol
You made it so easy to find. Very helpful... Thanks a lot Frank!
Good video. Worked for me. If you can't find the device in the portable device manager, find it in the universal bus controller.
Wow video is from 2014 but still helped me. Thnx alot man
Thanks, that was a simple quick fix! it worked once I went to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Worked. I've been looking for this for a while on my laptop. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much.
This video was very helpful. I have been trying to see my pics on my laptop but no luck. Finally I can view them.
So happy.
That worked when nothing else would. Thanks so much!
Hi Frank and thanks for your helpful video... I've recently just updated my iPhone to OS 10 and now tried to plug it into my PC and its not showing.
I've just followed your video and found my device under Universal Serial Bus Controller, then when I try to install the MTP USB device driver I get a window saying "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device" - This device cannot start. (Code10)
Any ideas? :(
Like a few other users, I had to look in "universal serial bus controllers" and not in "portable devices". Other than that, click click click and it worked.
years later still works thanks man
Thank you so much! I have been having a hard time with this for a while and you were the first from numerous search results that actually helped!
