Someone probably used this story but heres what I want megaman x9 to be. Axl is constantly treated bad by X because he isn't good enough. He isn't saving enough lives and he is letting too many mavericks escape. Axl then uses a forbidden copy ability to copy a mavericks not only weapons and body... but skills and personality as well. Axl copies a small maverick personality and is able to please the hunters more but the effect wears off soon and he is back at it. So Axl copies stronger and more aggressive Mavericks. He is able to save lives but now completely ignored X's commands on taking the Mavericks prisoners instead of killing them. When X confronts him Axl says "you know what X!? I'm finally a good Maverick hunter and now you're mad at me!? No wonder you're so disliked. Just stay out of my way and let me do my thing. Then none of the hunters have to get hurt!" This aggressive behavior continues and finally goes overboard when axl copies both Zeros and Sigmas personalities and skills. Then Axl finally has had enough of everyone using him and turns on the hunters becoming the main villain. I haven't come up with a cool enough ending though. I partly got this idea from Destiny willowleaf in the comment section.

I like this animation a lot, even though it has some canonical issues since Axl is a new gen reploid. While he may be just a prototype (a cute one imo) he's still immune to all kinds of viruses. But you animated something that many fans (Myself included) wanted to see, so yeah good job. (I know that I probably didn't need to point out any of this, because it's just a fan animation, but I did anyways because I felt like it)
I know that Axl can't be infected by viruses (and Lumine kinda canonically hinted that this kind of thing would never happen) but I imagine that there may be some way for Lumine to take over his body or some way for Axl's DNA being similar to Sigma's to come into play at some point. No however Axl can copy other reploids that are evil. He may also be able to copy their personality as well. Then the copy ability becomes like a drug and Axl eventually copies their full personality becoming evil.
I don't think what was implanted into Axl was a virus, but rather a parasite. You see, parasites are actual living things, or rather cellular organisms, that leech off of the host organism, sometimes altering their behavior in the process. (Think of the cordyceps fungi for example.) Viruses in the other hand, while similar (With altering their host's behavior) aren't organic, are acellular (single celled) and they always cause sickness to the victim.
To be more precise, axl isn't exactly infected by a VIRUS, per say, as it was stated in the beginning of the video that since the incident, he has been able to copy reploids perfectly due to having absorbed lumines coding, since axl was only the prototype, and lumine was a final model. There is also a certain logic depicted by reploid revo that the gems on axls helmet and chest come into play with his copy ability. It is better explained in the video itself, but if one were to take a close look into an axl artwork, one would see a sort of camera like lense inside of axl's head piece, see the thing is that when axl copies data from another reploid, he has to take size, mass, and weight into account before he uses his ability, if this gem DOES indeed act like a sort of camera, it is able to "capture" the data from said reploid, it might be required to analyze the data in order to see if it meets the necessary requirements for axl to utilize it for his ability to work. Once that's out of the way, the data is taken straight to the dna chamber in axls chest gem to merge it with that of his dna soul, allowing him to complete his transformation. If we apply this logic to the megaman X8 situation, (and assuming lumine knew about this at all at some point or another.) It would make sense for lumine to utilize the moment and insert a small peice of himself into axls camera like gem lense, because axl needs it to utilize the copy data In order to transform, with a literal peice of himself inside axls lense, it would be forced to integrate the data in axl's programming, thus allowing him to completely copy the data of any reploid he pleases, because he now has the complete and updated version of the copy program, but unfortunately it doesn't stop there. Remember when lumine said that the next generation reploids could go maverick at will, due to having absorbed sigma's data and personality? Well with lumine having implanted a literal peice of himself into the camera lense and which could possibly connect to axl's computer like reploid brain, (it would make sense for the data to go to the brain for him to access it for his transformation.) It would mean that he would be able to LITERALLY integrate his personality and way of thinking into axl's programming, causing what could very well be classified as a sociological implant into his brain, causeing Subconcail changes to his personality and way of thinking, which could very well show on the outside. And with lumine literally having access to all of axl's data, could very much implement as sort of pathogen into his brain, causing him to gain more and more sociological differences as time passes, like a disease that stays dormant for a while and you don't even know about it, or in this case the maverick virus. Slowly and slowly changing axl over time until he eventually gets to the point where he starts to act less and less like axl himself. (Following the logic of the video) and starts to act like other people altogether, letting go of what was originally HIM, in the first place, until he is no longer AXL. (specifically lumine or a maverick in general,) Resulting in axl's lumine like form, until he completely turns into a maverick himself. Having become enslaved to the programming. And letting go of who he once was, thinking that this new way of life is better for him. (So you can throw the whole "maverick by choice" thing out the window lumine.) Of course, there is also proof of axl using a type of force metal in megaman x command mission in order to do all kinds of transformations, kind of like a substitute programming, and without becoming a maverick himself in the process. As it is said to boost his abilites dramatically. Technically it takes place in a separate timeline, so it's non-canon, but it makes sense none the less. I hope this comment has helped to understand the copy ability and axl himself, as a whole.
