- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Eleni describes building a big, bold, beautiful market for a billion people in Africa. This market would improve the livelihoods of millions of small farmers and traders. She has done this successfully in Ethiopia and is started to branch out across Africa. She believes this idea will help end poverty in Africa.
Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin is co-founder and chief executive of eleni
LLC, a newly formed company with equity investments by Morgan
Stanley, IFC, and 8 Miles Fund, that is positioned to be the industry
leader in designing, building, and supporting the operations
of commodity exchange eco-systems in frontier markets. The
company’s business model is to deliver exchange turnkey projects
on a Private-Public Partnership (PPP) basis. Eleni Gabre-Madhin
is founder and former CEO of the highly acclaimed Ethiopia
Commodity Exchange (ECX), which she founded and managed
from 2008 to late 2012, successfully trading $1.2 billion annually
after 3 years of operation. A globally recognized thought leader on
agricultural commodity markets and African development, she has
held prior roles at the World Bank, the International Food Policy
Research Institute in Washington, and UNCTAD in Geneva. Eleni
has been named among the 125 Global Women of Impact by
Newsweek in April 2013, among 100 Most Influential Africans by
New African in 2012, and received the prestigious Yara Prize for
Agricultural Transformation in Africa and the African Banker Icon
Award, both in 2012.

Eleni is a role model who put her knowledge where it matters and changed the lives of so many for better. I just wonder why is it when it comes to Ethiopia everything has to be about poverty and famine? Looking in to developing a market or making it better is a necessity to every human being where every they are, you can say the same about the developments conducted on FTSE or NYSE from time to time.

Interesting and very good approach of idea, but where and how does she gain money, to cost all the expenses? It seems it is mostly spending money on technologies, is it a private company doing this or is it together with the government?
Very good question. The truth is she is a serial liar and even she snached the idea of ecX from someone who initially proposed to the then PM Melese Zenawi. Now she took all the credits without any shame as if she developed the idea by herself. She was*is a pro-terriorirst sympathizer useless women and is working secretly to organize a coup with a terriorist orgs named as Tplf.

Mining in Ethiopia. Gold is Ethiopia's main mineral export and has been mined since ancient times, primarily as alluvial or free gold. At present, Ethiopia has a single large-scale gold mine, Lega Dembi, in the southern area of the country, owned by Midroc (98%) and the Ethiopian government (2%).

to modernize the current African market ... you can't just be an idea person ... you actually have to be an engineer or developer in working process. It needs change, which isn't necessarily good for Africans but it will be good for the next generation of Africans. I don't see how economists can help Africa by perhaps only making such good-sounding talks. We need an Elon Musk like figure solving an issue not talking about how to solve an issue.
