- A small Business can be a success, a small business doesn't have to stay small. Africa like many places is full of small businesses and struggling entrepreneurs, from small shop owners to street vendors. Vusi challenges the African business community as a whole to help grow these entrepreneurs as most businesses need capital and other forms of support from the more well established businesses and for bankers to play their part. As a continent Africa can become an economic giant of the world.
Known as a "Rock star of public speaking" Vusi is the only speaker globally to have been invited to the Dragon's Den as an investor. This is because he has built several businesses. Today, as Chairman of Watermark Afrika Fund he is spearheading a pan-African process of raising the largest Growth Fund of high growth, high potential entrepreneurs in Africa.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

That would be great! Problem is I don't know what to do....
aeron uy What is your strength? What are u good at? What is your passion or what frustrates you? That can give you an idea.
I'm an Angolan Entrepreneur and this is what I have to say: the fact that this video has less than 1 Million views in more than 1 year is the reason why Africa and African Business still have a long way to go. "They don't know what they don't know", thus no quick change will come from ignorance.
Hi Denilson we are looking for Angolan business partners
Denilson Moreira That’s People like you, us are meant to help them get it those who want to will. This is the mistake many Africans make not understanding just how deep the scars of colonisation runs in the minds of people. Even today because actually colonisation still exists just in a different guise to most people who live in the cities where there’s still a trace of “peace” but we all know there’s a lot going on below the surface like in the Congo so let’s not be pretentious. Let’s be real and those of us who still standing let us pass on the relay stick of knowledge. Less talk & judgement more action!
@@edwardsrubyg Before blaming colonialism. You need to take a deep hard look at the conduct of leaders in Africa since independence. Take a look at Uganda. In the 1900s, the Indians came to Uganda for jobs. Over time, many of these communities prospered and set up their own businesses. They built everything up from nothing.
In 1972, the dictator Idi Amin said "We are determined to make the ordinary Ugandan master of his own destiny, and above all to see that he enjoys the wealth of his country. Our deliberate policy is to transfer the economic control of Uganda into the hands of Ugandans, for the first time in our country's history."
Uganda, decided to expel 80,000 Indian who had made Uganda their home. Many had been born n the country. They did not know any other place. Uganda confiscated homes and business belonging to Indians. People lost their jobs. These Indians were not allowed to sell the businesses and homes, so they could have money to start a new live elsewhere. They were give 90 days to leave the country with just two suitcases. The looting of properties began before families had even left. On the way to the airport, cars were repeatedly stopped by the police, passengers were stripped of their belongings, jewellery was taken, and there was nothing anyone could do. They were further harassed at the airport.
1972, 90% of the taxes were paid by the Indians. The Indians contributed significantly to the Ugandan economy. After the expulsion, Uganda's faced economic crisis and inflation soared and imported goods became impossible to get hold of. Those who got the stolen businesses could not make them work and were run badly. The economy went downhill.
Those who left had to start life with zero and faced a great deal of pain, struggle and hardship. One day they had everything, and the next they had nothing. They lost their friends and the place they called home. People were scattered.
When Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986, the Ugandan government warmed to the Asian community. He encouraged the exiles to return. A few returned, but most lost trust and confidence in Uganda. Why return to a country, which took everything from you? A country in which you were born?
In neighbouring Kenya, the authorities were making it for hard to Indians to live there and many left to other countries. They feared, the country would to the same as Uganda.
In 2016, despite making up less than 1% of the population, the Indians are estimated to contribute up to 65% of Uganda's tax revenues.

Much respect to this guy and that Ted Talk from Brazil
If I were in South Africa I would votr for you as the next president. I like the honesty of this guy, he is not these reach people who give us dubious facts like I worked hard and so forth. His theories are real they apply to ordinary people and are facts. Asante Yesu. Infact I have a mental crush on this man.
Love you brother! We, the kids of Africa are doing it. I have started a hospital in Kenya which will eliminate medical tourism in Africa.
This is an EDUCATED and WISE man. I hope this man can become a great leader one day.
I am proud to say that l've started, 6 months in and posting my 2nd quarter Newsletter in July. Started off on a great high, then came the pain of rejection from the business community, the struggle to pay bills, the failures, owing institutions money, the mistakes. That has been the downside. On the upside, the strong recommendation letters from clients, support from the community in my projects, the affiliation into recognised associations, working with equally ambitious young people. I really cannot wait to see myself five years from now! Entrepreneurship is the BEST decision l ever made for myself. Still on my 8-5 but slowly getting out of that grind. So yes Vusi, l totally relate when you say , "Just start!".
Any update
*Just Start*... That line just killed me
My PRECIOUS BROTHER you are too AMAZING!
YES THAT'S WHAT I TELL WE NEED TO GROW OUR OWN CONTINENT
I'm with you Roland ✊
Beautiful! This was very informative and I love the statement regarding bringing the ideas and initiative of the whole African diaspora back to the African continent.
I recognized him from the Swissgarde conference I once attended in Jo'burg. I like his thought processes. Africa certainly needs a new ideology
Wow!This was a great speech! The ending kinda brought tears to my eyes! Every Africans with a dream/goal needs to see this!
Incredible talk! I’m from India and I really want Africa to flourish in business and entrepreneurship. It’s gonna be so interesting to watch.
Thank you for your kind words
What he said about asians is true, they start a shop in the view like a 'Kingdom' which their next generations should keep carrying on. Thus, start ups are done for future generations.
And yes Africa as a whole should economically develop
Short, sweet and direct. Had my attention from the beginning till the end. I'm so motivated!
I live in Trinidad and just found out about Vusi a few days ago and ever since I have been binge watching videos. so radical! Unlike any I have heard before
This was so insightful. It's my second time watching this. The first time was most probably a year ago and now, it hit me hard. It is starting to make sense why most startups don't grow. Thank you Vusi
This guy here is simply excellent
one of the best talks I have watched till date. Incredible speaker!
We are Big Business
Best TEDx. Hands down. A real authority speaking cogently about something that matters.
This is brilliant, share and listen to repeatedly. And his story at the end...is brutally true. Progress and success is far from a straight line. Many curved paths, dead ends, potholes and detours along the way. Be diligent, disciplined, persist and execute...
I particularly drew inspiration from Vusi’s personal story at the end of the segment. Persistence and staying the course when things seem bleek is the one constant in every successful entrepreneur’s path (road) to success. “Just start”. Well noted, Vusi. Thank you. Another powerful public speaking event.
Sheer truth telling. The end...astonishing.
Thank you so much for your generosity.
Vusi I just have to say amen to that!! Now it's our turn to shine!! Arise Africa!! I strongly believe that entrepreneurship is the way out from the dark scenario Africa has been facing. Thanks for the talk, your message was effectively passed.
Amazing!👏 The mindset has to change!!
"If you build to sell, you build for value"
meen i swear vusi is just goals goals goals, typa mentality we need in africa
Yessss I'm starting. We are going for BIG business models. There is absolutely no reason us not to succeed on that level. We can do it!
Powerful. Very inspiring. Africa is the future and we are ready to take it. Thank you Vusi. God bless you Man.
The greatest business lecture i have ever had in my life. I just started and i have a lot of handles to turn and adjust just from this lecture. Thanks Vusi
Real Intelligence and concise message. I am proud of you sir and honored that I get to watch this video. Keep up the faith Bro...Keep up the faith!! Because this continent really needs it.
This is so deep, as an entrepreneur, i see myself all in what Vusi is saying. FAITH
He spoke very well and made some challenging points. And not just for Africans; much of this is applicable everywhere.
I've watched this more than once. Our problem is our wealth creation model, we need to rethink and jointly get involved.
It's quite a motivation to me.
This applies to all of us who want to thrive and improve our lives. We need to talk/think less, but to take more real actions today!
Great speech!
I have faith for all of us... thank you
There was a great show I caught on a non cable network it was called, "African Americans without borders". Basically it showcased 5 different types of African American entrepreneurs who went to Africa to Start their businesses.. One lady was a real estate investor, 1 guy was an accounting, one person opened up hospitals.. can't remember the other 2 youtube it.
Organically Inspirational & Wickedly Motivating! Much Respect, Vusi!
I am on the second restart with a twist of diversification and this has just reinforced my believe that it is possible. Thanks V.T.
Woow i love this one. If you want to make a legacy just start that thing u think can bring a difference in you and your pple. JUST START. Am applying this one
Oh Lord this is just it.What else is missing.Heard this in 2020,who can relate?
Thank you so much brother. Stay as you permanently and growing as well.
this man makes everything seem possible again, am inspired i have been rejected by so many people asking for mentorship its a humbling experienced.
For first time I have seen such a good speech from an African, kudos!
Getting goosebumps, this talk is applicable for anyone in their own context.
Amazing Talk. Yes we must change our mindset and our narrative. Small is no longer Big. We must learn to think big, make decisions with the future generations in mind and have high standards at all levels.
Thank you very Vusi Thembekwayo I am really inspired by your word baba. I have started and I believe oneday I will be successful in my business
Big up to you Vusi, I am looking forward to seeing you soon at TUT. You`re awesome....Your speech gave me courage in my business....
Amazing talk! Every startup entrepreneur should watch it
very positive and inspirational. startups face many challenges today anywhere in the world yet a few dreamers do actually succeed. africa is no different. working around the system is a path to success if you do not have support structures inside the system.
I'm so grateful I stumbled upon this video. There are so many gems and the storytelling is insightful, logical, and inspirational. Thank you!
Wow, what an amazing gentleman. I'm so inspired that maybe I too don't need to give up on Africa.
I have been waiting for this talk now i'm going to start i will just start
Blew my mind! I need to meet this guy!
When I start to feel down.. I watch this ...over n over and share it over n over
Writing these words about to got to bed. Feeling really inspired by this man and getting really into meeting him someday. Here in Spain it's not easier than in Africa. Again, really inspired by Vusi. Gonna try as much as I can.

Thanks Vusi.
Big Up Brother! Am in Nairobi Kenya and i love your Ted Talk.
