The Big Lie of Small Business | Vusi Thembekwayo | TEDxUniversityofNamibia

  • A small Business can be a success, a small business doesn't have to stay small. Africa like many places is full of small businesses and struggling entrepreneurs, from small shop owners to street vendors. Vusi challenges the African business community as a whole to help grow these entrepreneurs as most businesses need capital and other forms of support from the more well established businesses and for bankers to play their part. As a continent Africa can become an economic giant of the world.
Known as a "Rock star of public speaking" Vusi is the only speaker globally to have been invited to the Dragon's Den as an investor. This is because he has built several businesses. Today, as Chairman of Watermark Afrika Fund he is spearheading a pan-African process of raising the largest Growth Fund of high growth, high potential entrepreneurs in Africa.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I'm an Angolan Entrepreneur and this is what I have to say: the fact that this video has less than 1 Million views in more than 1 year is the reason why Africa and African Business still have a long way to go. "They don't know what they don't know", thus no quick change will come from ignorance.

Denilson Moreira That’s People like you, us are meant to help them get it those who want to will. This is the mistake many Africans make not understanding just how deep the scars of colonisation runs in the minds of people. Even today because actually colonisation still exists just in a different guise to most people who live in the cities where there’s still a trace of “peace” but we all know there’s a lot going on below the surface like in the Congo so let’s not be pretentious. Let’s be real and those of us who still standing let us pass on the relay stick of knowledge. Less talk & judgement more action!

@@edwardsrubyg Before blaming colonialism. You need to take a deep hard look at the conduct of leaders in Africa since independence. Take a look at Uganda. In the 1900s, the Indians came to Uganda for jobs. Over time, many of these communities prospered and set up their own businesses. They built everything up from nothing.
In 1972, the dictator Idi Amin said "We are determined to make the ordinary Ugandan master of his own destiny, and above all to see that he enjoys the wealth of his country. Our deliberate policy is to transfer the economic control of Uganda into the hands of Ugandans, for the first time in our country's history."
Uganda, decided to expel 80,000 Indian who had made Uganda their home. Many had been born n the country. They did not know any other place. Uganda confiscated homes and business belonging to Indians. People lost their jobs. These Indians were not allowed to sell the businesses and homes, so they could have money to start a new live elsewhere. They were give 90 days to leave the country with just two suitcases. The looting of properties began before families had even left. On the way to the airport, cars were repeatedly stopped by the police, passengers were stripped of their belongings, jewellery was taken, and there was nothing anyone could do. They were further harassed at the airport.
1972, 90% of the taxes were paid by the Indians. The Indians contributed significantly to the Ugandan economy. After the expulsion, Uganda's faced economic crisis and inflation soared and imported goods became impossible to get hold of. Those who got the stolen businesses could not make them work and were run badly. The economy went downhill.
Those who left had to start life with zero and faced a great deal of pain, struggle and hardship. One day they had everything, and the next they had nothing. They lost their friends and the place they called home. People were scattered.
When Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986, the Ugandan government warmed to the Asian community. He encouraged the exiles to return. A few returned, but most lost trust and confidence in Uganda. Why return to a country, which took everything from you? A country in which you were born?
In neighbouring Kenya, the authorities were making it for hard to Indians to live there and many left to other countries. They feared, the country would to the same as Uganda.
In 2016, despite making up less than 1% of the population, the Indians are estimated to contribute up to 65% of Uganda's tax revenues.

I am proud to say that l've started, 6 months in and posting my 2nd quarter Newsletter in July. Started off on a great high, then came the pain of rejection from the business community, the struggle to pay bills, the failures, owing institutions money, the mistakes. That has been the downside. On the upside, the strong recommendation letters from clients, support from the community in my projects, the affiliation into recognised associations, working with equally ambitious young people. I really cannot wait to see myself five years from now! Entrepreneurship is the BEST decision l ever made for myself. Still on my 8-5 but slowly getting out of that grind. So yes Vusi, l totally relate when you say , "Just start!".

There was a great show I caught on a non cable network it was called, "African Americans without borders". Basically it showcased 5 different types of African American entrepreneurs who went to Africa to Start their businesses.. One lady was a real estate investor, 1 guy was an accounting, one person opened up hospitals.. can't remember the other 2 youtube it.

very positive and inspirational. startups face many challenges today anywhere in the world yet a few dreamers do actually succeed. africa is no different. working around the system is a path to success if you do not have support structures inside the system.
