- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Combining ancient designs, traditional skills and a modern approach to fashion and entrepreneurship can lift women out of poverty and bring African fashion into the limelight.
Mahlet Afework is a fashion designer based in Addis Ababa. She started her career at 16 as a model and musician, while simultaneously studying nursing. She left school and quit modeling to follow her passion and become a professional fashion designer. She has since gained critical acclaim for her cutting-edge designs; winning the 2012 Origin Africa's design award, showcasing her work at African Fashion Week New York 2012, and winning the 2010 Designer of the Year award from Alliance Ethio-Française at European Fashion Day in Addis.
Mahlet works exclusively with hand-woven fabrics made by women. She creates clothing and accessories which are fresh and cutting-edge and at the same time very wearable. Working with hand-woven fabrics is a way for Mahlet to give back and to support women weavers who are often marginalized within the male-dominated weaving community. Mahlet is a beneficiary/participant of the International Trade Centre's Women and Trade Programme. The programme supports women entrepreneurs and help them connect to regional and global markets.

What moves me most is that she has and will change so many people's lives for the better while promoting what is nourishing and beautiful. Oh how I wish each of us could find our own way of doing this.

3:10 [DISAPPOINTING]First of All Amharic isnt an officical languahge in Ethiopia but its rather the working language of Federal government offices. All 9 regions in Ethiopia do have their own official language. Secondly "the only African language that has its own script"?? The Geez font/ scripts dates back long to the civilization of Axumite believed current ttime Eritrea and Tigray and Northern Amhara .... With All due Respect, Mafi Next time you on stage to promote your history and culture ... get details first. i used to be fan of you but seriously ... your presentation is MISLEADING. I wonder if the facts you gethere related to fashion do have credible sources!!!!
You're right.
What's an "ofifical languahge"?
Mafiye u are so beautiful i want to be like u
the only african language with its own script... bullshit sorry but why are us africans so gooddam ignorent about our continet it makes me crazy
hahahahha1232 triggered??
Jesus is the only WAY to God, the TRUTH of salvation, and the Breath/Bread of LIFE.
ACCEPT Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Sins separate us from God because He's Holy. All sins will be forgiven and erased through faith in Christ Jesus. God ♥ you, is alive, merciful, faithful, truthful, and is waiting with His arms wide open FOR YOU! For Jesus did not come to establish a religion, but to become a mediator between God and men.
Through the Grace of God, Jesus was given to us by paying the price at the Cross at Calvary. Repent and confess from your sins to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you. A sinner cannot save a sinner, only a sinless person can. That sinless Being is Jesus Christ Himself.
Through the faith in Christ Jesus, the sick was healed; everywhere He went, He healed the blind, the mute, the deaf, the demon-possessed, raised the dead, as well as performed many miracles; He also walked on water, turned water into wine, calmed the storm with His command, and was raised up from the dead. Miracles are still being seen today! Jesus is our helper, our healer, our refuge/protection, and our strength for when time gets tough.
God is standing and knocking at the door waiting for your answer right now because THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS COMING.
Your content of presentation is different than your topic. First of all you dress like Westerner presenting about ancient fashion of Ethiopia. At the end it was waste of time.
You have to read the title before you judging her.
smart African Ethiopian habeshhhhaaaa
broud of you my sister
