FYI for those interested in these: If you look for an online Japanese domestic market store (search in Japanese), and manage to communicate with them, you can get these for almost half the cost as Japanese ebay sellers. The same goes for all waterstones. Edit: The same goes for many things really; I’ve done this before with musical instrument equipment as well as waterstones. It takes time and energy to strike gold but it’s worth it.
Great stuff..love all your videos. You've had this stone for some time...can u shed some light on the life span on one of these stones with regular use?
Those venev stones are now over $100 per stone and they have discontinued the 400/800. If you want those 2 specific grits, you have to buy 2 stones now.
I'm seeing bark river emulsion. How do like those? I really needed this video.. and now i really need these stones... How about 800 grit + 3000 grit and finish it off with a 5k shapton ha no kuromaku / chosera to polish it. These naniwa diamond stones really take away what I don't like from the traditional diamond plates. Cost and performance seldom increase on par sadly. Thanks for the video sensei
Japanese stone are suck. Brick and river stone the best sharpening when outdoor, indoor just use sandpaper 150# to 7k if you can found more 10k ,20k or 30k you are lucky and never ever take your cost of extra money.. Japanese stone will wave and take long time to sharpened your knives.
Bro you motivate me to start chopping wood. I'm 26. I have two Colin's, an unnamed best from the 1930's, an American style hatchet from Germany in the 1880s, estwing 26 inch axe, estwing fireside companion, and my spotz monster maul. Bought it yesterday. I also lift. I know about Alan thrall
Hi, thanks for the video, it was very informative. I've noticed on one of your maxamet sharpening videos that you skipped the 3000 grit. Assuming the toothier edge coming out of 800 plus stropping on diamond/cbn is more to your liking. If so, when do you use the 3000 grit (i.e. when is it a good thing to have in your arsenal?) would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you!
just depends on the user, the higher the polish the more precision, the less endurance. Also High polish requires more up keep. 800 grit to a 1 um strop is the best compromise, but I still enjoy the beauty of the 3k and the laser like precision, just depends on the steel, task at hand and the user.
Personally, yes, I felt the edge was crisper on Vanax with diamond/ cbn abrasive, those Vanadium Nitrides are very hard, Chromium NItrides like in LC200N are softer and don't need diamond.
Where do you think the best place to get the Naniwa diamond stones is from? Between high hardness ZDP, S110v and Maxamet I could definitely use one. I was going to get a DMT diamond stone, at this point which do you prefer?
Herb Toker after months of use, I prefer these, since I get the Polish and performance I like. the DMT stones don't Polish good and leave a more aggressive edge. I like precision edges that push cut and leave cleaner cuts. just preferences. These stones are not for everyone they don't reduce the skill needed to sharpen but in the right hands they can give you the results you might be looking for.
You may have already seen this, but if not, take a look at larchwoodcanada.com. Beautiful and excellent end-grain cutting boards. Not cheap, but not outrageous either.
Have you ever tried chienese diamond plates ? You would be amazed, I felt better than my DMT stone. 20$ for a double sided diamond stainless plate ,that's a bargain.
Chinese? As professional sharpeners we use stones from Japan not China. Even if China made something good most of us would not buy it because we dont contribute to countries who are trying to destroy ours. Also DMT makes plates not stones. Just stainless plates with a thin layer of industrial diamonds sprinkled over adhesive. They do not last very long at all. Especially their fine, extra fine, and extra extra fine grit. Its a rip off
gabriel Sturdevant meh, I drive a Ford escort, I see some dudes waste there money on expensive cars, to each their own, we all invest money into what we care about. No one needs anything. but If you wanted to know what's out there at the top of the line. here is a video for what ever it's worth hahaha
wasnt saying it isnt justified. my stones are pretty crappy. i'd love some quality stones. my best sharpening tool i have is my belt. i put polishing compound on it so now i have a really convenient strop
its a plate coated with diamonds, what about it? I use it to flatten stones with the 140 grit, the 1200 grit was lame, finished wayyyyy coarser, left a chewed up edge compared to a bonded stone
Big Brown Bear Same experience with it, I don’t like the Atoma 1200 edge at all. Plus is sounds like a vinyl with its zippy sound. Haha Thinking about getting these Naniwa diamond stones for the higher grits. Your videos are persuasive for me. ;)
aree you saying he just polished an already sharp edge, who knows, he did say no need to create a bur, never heard that in 30 years of colecting and sharpening. if the knife is dull the only way to assure you are hitting the apex is by creating a burr , but the russian stone does sound good. i am astounded that the diamond infused stone created such a polished edge. . I have a collection af nainawa, chosera and some ceramic shaptons. the rough grit white shapton is a waste, money in the toilet, my 600 does better,
@@glytch5 you complain he didn't sharpen in this video, but refuse to watch the video where he does so? You're a moron who just wants something to complain about. Good for you.

Thanks triple B, that’s a great explanation I never really understood the purpose of the high grit Dimond water stones
thanks for the video. straight talk, good honest information on the differences.

Robert Morano nop, I just got those grits in one stone two weeks ago
Knowing what you know now . Could you recommend a 3 stone set up that will re profile to a clean finish?

Hes a douche, but hes right about sandpaper.
Would an eraser work to deglaze the stone, the way it works on ceramic?
BBB I'm interested in getting a Naniwa daimond whetstone I'm thinking 1000 grit, will this stone sharpen maxamet?
Triple B did you have to flatten or lap the Venev stones before using them?
I am looking for some stones for sharpening s110v, maxamet and s90v, i want to get 3 or 4 stones but i canot afford these 200$ per stone. Any advice?
How long do Naniwa diamond stones last? For both knives and woodworking blades?
they will outlive you

I'm in CT. I have an vintage axe plug. I might be able to help you out.
non yobussiness good job man, that's badass
how many knives can i sharpen on a stone with 1000 grit approximately how many knives ????
Great video👍👍
Daniel Eraut thanks brother
Use soap and water in a spray bottle as you sharpen, will not load up, i use palmolive degreaser dish soap

Have you tried using oil on these diamond resin stones? The swarf might float easier on oil.
Yeah.....I think I will wait until this diamond waterstone technology gets cheaper.
Would you count nitride steels (vanax) as “diamond necessary”?

Big Brown Guy Yep that was my deal with the DMTs, not as good polish. These stones really are a happy medium.
Herb Toker yeah, I think when word gets out about the Gritomatic Venev stuff it will be rad
Herb Toker best place I found is japan woodworker they have the 800 for 99 usd
Can you help me geek out with a vid of maxamet vs s110v. PLEASE
Where'd you get that cutting board? Freaking gorgeous. I want an end grain cutting board but having trouble finding a decent one that isnt $700

diamonds in resin - makes me wonder how hard it would be to DIY cast a stone. probably way cheaper.
Mixing soap should help negate the build up.
Doesn't mitigate it though otherwise I would be doing that it's just something that's fundamental to resin bonding
I feel like venev is the better value since they have dual grit sides.
Definitely, but the finish it's not just consistent
@@FearNoSteel awesome content btw
you've done all that and i use a $30 sharpener from home depot. good thing about heap knives is you can use cheap stones
