Love videos about sharpening. I don't have a really expensive knife collection, but for some reason I picked up free-hand sharpening recently and blown through some serious money on stones.
A consistent apex with a consistent burr is what I found to look for before moving on . It was my crucial mistake inky realized when I started magnifying the edge . These vids have been very helpful and so has outdoors55 channel for sharpening and garage duty .
@@NeevesKnives Now I am even more interested in seeing that edge and how they make it sharp. I remember you in a prior video expressing concern about sending your knife back to them for resharpening, because you thought they might just put a bevel on it. I didn’t understand what you meant.
@@dennishurley1992 I believe when you send it back to Rockstead the just sharpen it like a normal knife they put an edge bevel in it, just like I would, they do an amazing edge and it's mirror polished but then it's not a full conxed zero grind anymore, but I could technically just do that myself, I'm probably going to just re Strop it for a long time so I can keep the original edge, I could throw it on my work sharp with a polishing compound in the convex that would definitely work but I'd want to make sure it stays polished, or I'm going to a regular edge bevel that's polished
hi there I'm looking for my first stone what can you recommend ? I just want to resharpen knifes-D2 mainly I have that hyper expensive magnifying thing... well 2 pounds!
Speaking about sharpening, man Im been completely in love with my para3 LW in spy27. It eats everything, even stuff that chipped up some my other similar steels. It just works . But sharpening it is so super easy . A quick strop on my thig when Im wearing blue jeans will clean the edge up a bit . I can get a screaming mean edge on it. Really don't make sense to me how it can hold a great working edge for so long. Even through tuff material like batt insulation and ceiling tile or gyp board. Then resharpen so easily. Have you tried it ? For me, out on the jobsite it really stands up and preforms everyday . I wonder how a mirror polish edge would be like on it ?
I've only done a couple spy27 so I can't say from experience how well a mirror will hold up, it's possible you could get micro chipping, but I suspect I won't, although I'm not sure how well it will take a polished edge, it might take an incredible polished edge, I've never put a polished edge on spy27 that I can remember. But usually with a working knife I'd recommend between 500 and 1000 grit just because you have the highest cutting potential for regular edc stuff
I've a question for you, is damascus steel easy to sharpen? I have Global knife GS-3 ,it is very easy to sharpen, gets extremely sharp ,but doesn't hold edge long time. I see these damascus steels with vg10 core or sg2/r2 core, you can buy r2 petty knife for 130euro now, is it easy to sharpen and will it wear out stone too fast.
According to an engineer at Boride Engineered Abrasive real diamonds are better than manmade diamonds like some mono-crystalline diamonds. My old EZE Lap real diamond plate from 20 years ago is still going strong, manmade diamonds would have worn out by now. When I buy diamond polishing compound I only get the more jagged real diamond paste. Real diamonds as they wear down only leave more jagged edges and my 20 year old 600 grit fine stone is still about 800 grit. 7 microns is about 2800 grit, 3 microns is 5000 grit and one micron is 14,000 grit. Smaller than that is used for polishing lenses.
Depends on the steel, if you want you knifes edge to have bite the you want grit pattern, the more mirror the less bite, the more chances your edge has to slip instead of bite into materials, and some steels it can lead to micro chipping after little use, even a great mirror will have micro scratches when zoomed in, and those kind of edges can work great for shaving but not so much for edc, depending on the steel the more polished it is the faster your edge will lose its bite after little use as well, there's many factors
Do you know what the deal is with vitrified and super vitrified diamond stones? What’s the difference between one and the other and how are they different from regular diamond stones? I’ve tried asking a *bunch* of times in several of your lives, but it never gets highlighted so I gave up. 😔
You can just tell how much more aggressive this stone is comparatively. Jerad, I should loan you my microscope set-up that you can actually record video with.
It's insanity the aggression is on another level, I'm probably going to get the 400 and others as well, it also seems like it will last a long time as well.
@@joncran8077 sounds great ! Some Two Sun knives I love ❤, some I'm meh about. All are great knives, many priced to fit even tight budgets ! Gotta love that !
Interesting content, but honestly, this video is hard to watch. I felt ANXIOUS, just hoping you would speak clearly enough to tell us what grit the Atoma stone was. It took like 4 minutes for you to tell us it was 140 grit, but was that FEPA-F, FEPA-P, or ASTM? Who the hell knows, you just skipped all of that IMPORTANT information. Maybe because it’s so damn confusing; all the Frikkan different abrasive scales. If I was a you/ tube knife guy; I’d make a video on that subject ALONE. MEANWHILE, this video is Extremely shaky, and appears there is no structure to this video. You’re here, there, grabbing this, grab that; I wish you would list the exact details of what knife, steel used, special features, and cost. Then list the stone, type, special features, and cost. Like; put the TEXT up on the screen! Also; to eliminate shaking and risky-dink magnificati, Amazon sells CARSON pocket microscopes, the $20 version (100x-250x) comes with a clip for your phone lense. Anyhow, we all love your fancy pants knives, they really are beautiful; and we want to learn from your experience; but this video could’ve been ALAWT better.

Sweet! Good stones are good to have
That's awesome, I was trying to explain it to my daughter how a diamond stone looks . Great video.
That was interesting picked up mag loop after your recommendation awhile back and adds another level to sharpening great idea, thanks nerves
For sure, it can also make you crazy 😆
Love this content, as I get more into sharpening it is so informative. Thanks Jared 👊

Excellence👍. That's some detailed inside looks that I've never seen before. I like it😁.
That was information that was very useful 👍🏽 thanks for sharing
Very cool to see what the scratch pattern looks like. Awesome vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
👊
Too cool! Good video sir! ✌️
Man, that looks awesome
Cool video thanks.
WOW ! boy do I need one of those little microscopes😮
The corse resin bonded diamond Stones look like dirty pavement. Definitely interesting.
Gotta the atoma 600,1200 great things if you can’t go resin bonded
I’d be interested in seeing what your Rockstead’s blade and edge look like at 60X.
It's a zero grind so the edge isn't a bevel, but I get what your saying that would be interesting

That's just crazy
Thoughts on atoma vs dmt?
Atoma are way better, they are far more aggressive and last much longer

@@NeevesKnives my thoughts to, I usually keep a pretty toothy edge on it. It is the only knife I own in that steel. I do enjoy it though.

Yeah I bet, but people have to get what they cab and can afford
when putting that mirror polish I guess you are meaning to leave the scratches in? is it a loss when you take the scratches out?

That's spelt 'MAGNIFIED'. Maybe buy a dictionary or ask an adult?
