Superb guns, and you are dead right about good break-barrels being as accurate as underlevers. In order for a HW98 to become inaccurate you need to treat it so badly that the same treatment would affect the accuracy of ANY airgun, underlever or breaker. Just keep the pivots tight but not overtight and give the pivot point a strip, clean and re-lube every six months or so and it will outlast you.

For about the 1st. decade the HW98 was offered they were an exceptional value. Given the cost of the hardware and production costs for the stocks. Weihrauch did eventually raise the price more inline with the actual costs. Up to that point both the stock maker and Weihrauch had suffered the burden, but still if you were to acquire a similar stock format it would still never the less cost you significantly more ! I personally think they have Always been a brilliant design made specifically for the HW 95 format and absolutely 100% competitive with the HW 77/97 formats. I personally think Weihrauch nailed it once again coming straight out of the Gate but it's taken almost 2 decades for folks to figure that out for themselves. These days fine competitive optics are readily available in shorter formats that easily accommodate break barrel formats and that's just not really an issue... 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Still that's an exceptional example ! 😃👍

Now I'm wishing I had an early example in my collection! I suspect these got lost in the mix when the market shifted towards more modern looking magnum airguns. It's a shame, people are really missing out on what is an excellent rifle.
It's certainly is easier finding scopes that properly fit the HW98 compared to the HW50S. 😀

@@Guru1ofatl Fact ! I was always dazzled what Aimee could pull off with an HW50S (If someone overlooks the accomplishment in that, they are clearly NOT paying attention !)
The HW50S Is my favorite format and I choose to believe there is a scope out there that can both fit the format and accommodate proper ranging. With the 95/98 format this becomes either more realistic or given modern optics "factual science".

As portable and accurate as the HW50S is, it's a very useful and enjoyable tool to have available. Now that Aimee has the 97, we'll be restoring the 50 to it's original or slightly lower power level and keeping it for use in the yard. Who knows, she may decide to go back to iron sights.

    • @marcmyers1465

@@Guru1ofatl My biggest challenge with the HW50S is that the forearm is tall and thin. Many target stocks will maintain a 6° taper to the palm, making the hold self centering. So the factory stock "Which in my opinion is a Utilitarian Work Of Art" wants to tip. Given the height this can make it a little sensitive. I had originally planned on putting the Micro-Level on my Hawke Airmax 6-24×50 but came to discover that the cowl could not really accommodate the 30mm ocular barrel, but it did fit spot on perfect with the Hawke 1" ocular barrel, relegating it's installation on the HW50S. It's merely serendipitous that the Micro-Level ended up where it was Most needed... 🤷🏼‍♂️ Set on high sensitivity it's a simple Red...Yellow... Green 🚥 affair.

The HW98 and 95 are basically the same gun. The 95 has iron sights and lacks the barrel weight but is otherwise identical. The HW50S/99 is a short stroke version of them which produces a bit less power but is more compact.
The HW80 is a hammer and produces great power with a lot of recoil. I've gotten reasonable accuracy out of them but not quite to the same level as the others.
Personally, I prefer the 98/95/55 since they are easier to cock and handy in the woods due to their light weight and reasonable length.
