This Review was made my own time and it took A LOT of time for the readers of my blog.
This video wasn't meant to make you decide if you would get the camera or not, this is a short documentary that covers the importance of raw and resolution and where the blackmagic camera really fits in. Further specs and features are your assignments to find out and decide. This review is based on my opinion and the interviewee's ideas on the camera. Enjoy!

Personal Thoughts on the Camera : We all know this camera got us excited as filmmakers and I am such honored to try this out and make a review out of it. I had the camera with me for 4 days and I really got to understand this tool. From the form factor itself as a camera, it was very odd to hold and feel like a video camera; unlike the dslrs, it has no grip that can make it easier to use in handheld purposes. However, I believe it's the matter of getting used with it since I found it comfortable to use on the last day using this camera. I like the fact that it offers what basic production needs to make a great video. Raw is Great; however how will the transition look like to those who suffer from budget issues? But also, you can choose to record in ProRes or DNxHD. As said in the video, this camera will still have to go through some stages to meet my expectations and with your help, they will improve drastically. Just can't wait for this upcoming NAB on what they will release to surprise us again!

Magnificent review, well done fellas! You set the bar on how to do these type of reviews.
This is the best review i've ever seen of anything in my life. You actually turned a review into a great short-documentary!
one of the best reviews so far, especielly the way you let a lot of different types of filmmakers tell their oppinoin!
Thanks, I love taking different approach on every review I have and for this, I've put much effort. Thanks again!
I enjoyed this review so much, your channel is one of the top 5 I have seen.
Thanks for the effort, appreciate it.
Very nice review and clearly a huge amount of work. This is a really great community contribution!
Hi Philip, Thanks for your kind words and support. Looking forwards on your updates in NAB2013!
Thanks for your support, more reviews coming :)
Hey Lionel,
Really enjoyed watching your review on this camera. This is how all cameras should be reviewed in thorough depth. Great shots altogether. Would love to see another review from you!
Thanks for your constructive criticism
Very good. Love the approach you took with this and like Philip said, you definitely put a lot of work into this one. Well done and thanks for sharing!!!
For me, when it comes to cameras; it's all about the latitude and color space depth. 5D has full frame but it's only 8 bit. Now that's when you really see the difference in large screen. Raw doesn't give you more latitude, it gives you flexibility to play around in post. Larger sensor gives you shallower depth of field and better performance in low light. That's basically it. Hope this helps :)
One of the best Tutorials, I have ever seen! Great great great!
Really nice work, mate. For me, at this price, it's still a no brainer for a large population of video shooters. Especially those who are on very tight budgets but have a real need for a cinema camera.
I enjoyed this video and the effort that you put into it!
Don't worry about the critical comments. I enjoyed the Filipino professionals opinions, and can understand that it's JUST AN OPINION.
You guys deserve a congratulations for your efforts.
if the DSLR shoots raw then we've got a winner. sensor heating which limits recording time in most dslrs should also be addressed (i believe the sony alpha77 has the best recording time at around 4 hours or more). battery life, and extreme frame rates are always a welcome addition.
Great review! I'm in the process of buying a SLR camera. Now I will research a little further about this camera. Thanks for the information.
My Absolute and more effusive respect for your review this is an incredible piece of work BMD should send you -as a gift- one camera like this, I saw so many reviews of this equipment and never understood anything until this review, including reviews from so very respected photographers like Philip Bloom I mean it CONGRATULATIONS SUper enjoy this video I catch from Cinema 5D.
I really enjoyed seeing this camera used in a handheld situation. Great work. Subscribed.
Great review! Enjoyed seeing myself briefly at 7:29 :)
I think you misunderstood some parts WauuPictures; though we shot it raw, I rendered it dnxhd to upload it on youtube. So there is no point of comparing RAW and ProRes on youtube unless you really download the footage and see it for yourself. Yes, what you just seen is DNxHD, how much more for RAW? :) thanks for your comment
Nice work!
thanks for telling us during a long video that RAW takes a lot of space and that BMCC is cheap. this info was invaluable )
Loooooooong. Dude, your heart is in the right place,... HOWEVER, besides understanding the technical side of shooting, real magic lies in the ability to produce content that is effective, captivating, and interesting with the SHORTEST RUN TIME POSSIBLE...
A lot of ppl wish that were the case. They want to believe great images are the result of a superior camera only, but it takes accessories, and knowing how to use your gear -- whatever you happen to have. I love the fact that filmmaking is practically possible for anyone now, but I'm seeing fewer ppl learning the craft and instead relying on the gear, erroneously thinking that's going to make them a great filmmaker.
Excellent review, really helped me out in deciding if I want to buy the 4K version or not.
Thanks Preston! Keep up the great works you've got :))
Awesome video! realy like it! Explain a lot of things, and show us the camera, and diferent opinons about it! Glad that you made it! Awesome!
Dont put "NAB 2013 New blackmagic Cinema camera 4K" in your description if you not reviewing the 4K Production Camera, its deceiving viewers.
Wow that was a great display for comparing the raw to resolution, thank you for that awsome insite!! Saving up for the BM4k, but till then 7D & t4i it is...
Nice Job.... NAB 2013, rocked this year - I just bought BM's $1,000 cinema camera and will wait for the reviews of working 4k cameras to purchase or wait for Sony to catch up. These are great times... I hope 4k will be the standard for another 20 years... as it should be over kill for small screens and consumer large screens... technically.
Thank you so much for this video! It's a wonderfully informative mini-doc on the Black Magic.
Great short documentary! I am looking into the more professional equipment now that I know I love film. This was really good :D
Awesome review thank you very much. Im thinking about getting the Blackmagic 4k and this has gave me a good sense on how the camera will be like. Its boiling down the Blackmagic 4k or the Sony NEX-VG900 as my main camera.
hehe, Thanks Tony! Keep up the great shows :) Still rocking your CPM filmtools cage I won in your giveaway!
Awesome review...I'm finding most people suggest it as a good 2nd camera, but not as a main camera. I'm considering picking up the BMPC now as a second camera.
Hi, Not quite sure since it was part of the collection I downloaded from music bed. :)
What I really want is Magic Lantern to shoot JPG sequence in the DSLR @ 3k. I have noticed JPG'S retain more information than shadows and highlights than the H264.
Hey LJ - thanks for this review!
As of now I'm still leaning towards 5D Mark iii. The crop factor on BMC definitely turned me off so as the incapability of shooting 60 fps. I love me some slow motion :) THOUGH. BMC definitely has that "film" look to it's footage and less "digital" looking. BOTH cameras are still amazing. Thanks again!
what a great video... well thought out and very informative. Great work!
Excellent work. I'm so thankful for this review. I think this camera is perfect for control environment such as commercial and especially indie films. You should also review the Digital Bolex and compare it to BMC.
If you enjoy no audio, choppy motion, 7 second record limits, and constant frame drops then yeah it's awesome. I'll admit it's highly impressive how much it improves the image, but it is hundreds of miles away from being reliable enough for a professional environment.
Outstanding review....a piece of cinema magic in itself :-)
is this a troll video or why are you talking so slow gay mystic ish? wtf
Great job man! Amazing documentary!
Yikes! it's going to be historical.... This video totally enlightened me... Thank you for putting it up......
OMG..why I'm not seeing this last year ? :)..proud Filipino..thank you guys :)..i just got my BMPCC :)..hehee
Except for the fact that only the 5dmkiii shoots raw at 1080p and rest are lower res, you can't playback in color or full speed, and you have unstable framerates and overheating problems....
I'm talking in general. What I want to say is that it was a great move by BMCC to also put direct Prores and DNxHD recording. It's not always practical to shoot RAW. Have you compared the difference in dynamic range from shooting RAW and directly Prores? Thank you for answering, you made a great review.
The song called Wrapped Up in Love by Marie Hines
Thanks Griffin! :)
Best review of this camera,..Awesome awesome!!
Great work! Thanks for sharing!
impressive look and editing
Thumbs up for the Philip Bloom impression:D
Very very interesting. Thank you very much for producing this video and share it. Greetings to all
Fantastic review. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you very much for this review. I started to invest in this camera for my weddings, short films, etc. I think they will make a new one, better one, and less complicated. I'm kinda holding off on dslrs now because there are always new and better ones, help! *.*
Astigggggg , Blackmagic for life ^_^
Hey all. I am really wondering with how fast things move.. if Black Magic is going to come out with an updated camera in say a year. I know Nikon and Canon took a few years, but Black Magic has updated some of their hardware pretty quickly.. the Shuttle for example. A larger sensor, battery pack, 4K resolution, and 60p with lower crop factor would make this camera worth 6K easily! The video examples out there are outstanding, especially the RAW demos. Still well worth 3K given all that it offers
Wow, the final, polished footage looks splendid. Especially the black and white photography. I have a question for you, though. In terms of being a practical filmmaker, I noticed you spoke to a colorist, but if you're a "do-it-yourself" type of person, is shooting raw and tweaking the footage in post something that's going to set you back if you're as advanced as some of the people you spoke with? Could I alone achieve those that final look with that camera and my own computer?
Hey man, such a great review and really cleared up a lot of questions i had but i'm still really undecided since most of what i film is for the Music/Reality industry, how would you say this camera is in a 'Grab & Go' sense ? for me DSLR's just appear more portable and easier to use in a sense of being more flexible (physically) but obviously the fact it shoots RAW and looks so good is tempting.
Thanks Lionel for the detailed presentation, the low light candleluight test is stunning- as the ungraded test on ISO 800 reveals a likewise effect as in standing picture fotography with Zeiss Pancolar lens and Practica LLC 26 years ago.Epic Pictures ! How much more in a movie scene. The ungraded ISO 800 candle light- thats it !
How to solve the problem with that hot smart card ?How many hours of takes to fill it? Thomas Franzke
Great Job with the video, hope filmmaker in Philippines find can use it with movie they produce. Each camera has its uses but depend it on who uses.Oh yeah let viewers know about firmware updates and other black magic product like 4k and pocket camera
The funny thing is that everyone is talking about RAW, RAW, RAW, and then when they finally get this camera they end up almost always shooting in Prores :)
Great review!
OmegaOniKyo.. 3K price, version 1. As I posted earlier... as popular as this camera is, it's making BM a bundle (unless they are barely making any money given how cheap it is). I would suspect and/or hope version 2 is a 60fps 4K large sensor update with dual SSDs and ideally an arm on the LCD so that you could move it to the side and use it as an external video so that you don't need to use a 2nd monitor for viewing/focus pulling.
Peter.. I thought the same thing. I think for the type of video this camera and even DSLRs are used for are such short bursts of video that overheating isn't much of an issue. I was curious though how long this camera can shoot for non-stop without any heating issues.
This camera is for film makers. Dont complain about it if youre not a film maker because its not designed for you. These people in the video need to realise this.
Nice discussion, great effort,
BTW, what is the song you used starting at 22:50 during the low light candlelight test? thanks!
great review man
Excellent Video... Resolution VS Raw?.. take the 2K RAW files open in Photoshop> Grade> Export to 4K.
Great Film!!!
Why don't you test the 4k version?
The cheaper version would be the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera.
BMC is only suitable for studio shooting and rich young ppls, obviously u can buy a semi pro video camera for a little more dollars, but great review and editing works, LEE...
great review, very in depth. thanks
the black hole i seen it before in DSLR too. 5dm2 or 7d i forgot. 60d dont have that problem.
Is there an external AC plug for this? If so, you can wire up a Switronix battery pack to it. I see in this video they have a battery mounted on the back, so it must be possible to power it with an external battery pack.
very nice work, well done. If you fix the frame rate issue at the end it'd be gold!
As a fan of your videos. i like your video.
Especially if you like the color grading lecture.
i want your vidieo that color grading lecture.
good review, thanks!
Wow. The hate! People love to hate.
Wow loved it
Great images!
really super nice camera!
Great review.
Nice review. Thanks.
yes it does, and it's about the same as a 5d. Way better image though.
Great video! Can you tell me how much everything weighs with the accessories?
15:33 I thought it was a dead pixel to but it is not. Someone told me is a firmware problem that suppresses highlights and needs to be fixed with an updated firmware. Anyway you should never film directly at the sun, is bad for the sensor.
This is a review from the Philippines pala! very inspiring hope to work with you someday!
great rewiew
thats a good review! thank you!
Do you think now it is more preferable than a canon 5d mark III because auf the Price reduction of 2000$? :)
Very informative and balanced review. :)
Chinese version of Philip Boom? Same mood, same look, shot hahaha
What equipment did you used in the video, like tripod, ball-head, etc?
I can't really agree with this assessment. It is not dramatic because it's produced to be so, it's dramatic because of where this product fits in an industry in transition. It's a dramatic time. It's not a product review per se. It's a review of a product in it's particular context, i.e. should you shoot raw and if you do should you shoot this camera? Can you adapt to shooting with it, both in terms of style and cost. It's also well balanced with input from several industry professionals.
I didn´t know that it's possible to Record in RAW because im novice in these themes. Its possible that you know what RAW is and how to work with raw files, but understand that there are people that dont know that. Why must i search something in Google when i don't know that it exists?
woah, just look at the people who are commenting haha. Thank you for this :)
nice dude, thanks!
SO DID YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THAT BLACKOUT WITH THE SUN FROM THE LENS FLARES?
How did u shoot the slow motion since with black magic u cannot shoot slow motion it does not shoot in 60 FP so u can change it later in after effect to slow motion ????????????
