It’s been on the market for a while now, but this is still hands down my favorite midsize sedan. Still looks sooooooo classy and elegant, even all these years later. The Mazda driving dynamics certainly don’t hurt, either. Accord, especially the 2.0T, is a very, very close second.

its better until you realize you will need to spend thousands of dollars on intake valve cleaning before 100k miles. dual injection needs to be standard going forward as i predict that di motors will PLUMMIT in resale value due to the obnoxious maintenance costs associated with direct injection-only

Good review! That’s a sharp ride inside and out. The 6 provides a very comprehensive drive in terms of its sportiness, refinement, and overall comfort/quiet cabin. There’s really not much that you don’t get with this car and for the money, you get a ton of value. For me, that’s what separates Mazda from its competition. The Accord, Camry, etc..are real good cars but they don’t feel premium quite like the Mazda 6 does and yet the brand still prices their vehicles very competitively. Mazda has really put themselves into a different category in my opinion.

Looked seriously at the Mazda6, the Accord 2.0L Touring, the Camry XSE V6, and the Ford Fusion AWD V6 almost two years ago. The Fusion's gone but the other three choices are little changed. On my score card the Accord came out #1 but with only a very slim margin over the Mazda. The SIgnature trim of the Mazda was impressive and the exterior styling was, to me, the best of all. Surprisingly, I found the tubo 4 and six speed transmission to be somewhat more sluggish than either the Accord or the Camry, an impression that was borne out by standard metrics such as 0-60 and quarter mile times. The deficits were relatively small but consistent among virtually all reviews. The Mazda handled well but its advantage over the Honda and the Toyota was almost unnoticeable.
Unfortunately for Mazda, the long standing shrinking market share for midsize sedans has hit the Mazda6 far more seriously than either the Accord or the Camry. Mazda6 sales in the calendar year 2019 were down an astounding 30% to less than 22,000 units in the US. And in the wake of COVID-19, the first quarter of 2020 was even worse, down 42% from the first quarter of 2019 to only 4500 Mazda6's sold off dealer lots. Toyota sold over 77,000 Camry's and Honda (suffering from a severe sales slump) sold over 47,000 Accords.
Of course, popularity may not correlate with quality and consumers who purchase a Mazda6 may not care how popular it is. But considering that Mazda's entire lineup of models (both sedans and SUV's) is in serious trouble (The Mazda CX-5 being literally the only model that isn't) the entire brand may be only a few steps away from becoming a division of Toyota.

I own a 2018 Mazda6 Turbo. You get 310 lb-ft of torque regardless of fuel, which is what matters more in daily driving. After doing my own testing, I'd say refinement and smoother power delivery is the advantage with premium fuel. The cabin is actually quieter and idle is also noticeably smoother. Other than that, I'd say there is really no point using premium for the extra power. I stuck with premium for the refinement.

The diffrent transmission they put into the 2015 and later 3rd gens is probably a lot nicer than my early 2014 3rd gen to. That's a very old view on turbo's. My other car back home is a 2.0T and is going 11 years strong and it's a VW. But common sense is common sense. Less parts means there will be less things to break. The Camry is the last sedan in the segment with a NA V6 unless you want slower base engines. Mazda and toyota offer NA 2.5L but what's life without any fun.

Still take the accord sport 2.0 over this. Mazda’s infotainment is just horrendous. And their dash/gauge cluster is a total missed opportunity.

If the infotainment means that much to you then it's not meant for you anyway. It's a driver's car not an iPad.

Call me salty but I don't like the fact mazda ended their partnership with ford. Since the "Ecoboost" engine is basically a L series Mazda engine. They could've made another speed 3. Mazda you forgot who your core audience is....

I don’t think Mazdapseed 3 was ever their “core” audience. Mazda has always done their own thing, and if you go back in the day they use to make plenty of premium cars (929, 626 Turbo, Amati brand). If anything the Miata proves Mazda understands their core audience more than any other manufacturer save for Porsche.

@@hondaftw1234 I understand, but hatchback cars are becoming so popular down here in Canada. I see so many Veloster's, Type R's and Ford focus RS. So i think introducing a new sports hatch will do this company well since all the journalists keep saying Mazda is not a luxury brand and I agree. Even their SUV's make no sense they have the least cargo capacity in the whole dam segment...

Ford has completely given up on hot hatches, and cars in general. Mazda didn't gain anything from the partnership, except drop in quality.

@@billharris7235 Actually Ford still makes cars in Canada. The Focus RS was discontinued but everything else is still here lol. But now I feel like with transmission lawsuit with Fords Getrag transmission failing in the Ford mustang may have some financial issues in the near future.

After this model year, the Fusion is going away, leaving only the Mustang in North America. I'd call that giving up. But if I could sell a million trucks at ludicrous prices, I'd probably drop the cars too!
