    Well, sitting here thinking about some led and the cost of some hydras , I re-watched this and am sold on getting some black box units. I run a 3ft cube 130g and have found the 300w black box units fit perfect. I have some existing Ai primes and a plasma. I'll combine the lot and see how it goes. But of course the skill to run a tank like above is still a way out for me, even after reefing for 10 years. High light, high flow, high nutrients, high export and then keeping that balance , yeh that's the hard part :)

    Amazing, very impressive what has been achieved. Thank you so much for sharing. I have some questions on the lighting:
    1. Any specific "black box", could you kindly share more info on the Black box?
    2. Any modifications to LEDs in the box i.e. did you swap out any LEDs?
    3. What other colours in the Black box LEDs, are you running all colours on 100% or are these run lower?
    4. You mention that you replace LEDs every two years, which colours, and any specific brand?
    5. You mention running a DIY LED fixture, what colour LEDs on the DIY fixtures?
    Thanks once again for sharing.

      10x is the minimum for a saltwater tank. As you move toward corals, and specifically SPS corals, you need higher chaotic flow for them to thrive.

    Black box lighting! What the ! Certainly saved some $$$ by not going big brand, but man that's some dedication soldering all those leds in and out ! And here I am using halide and soon to go plasma. Goes to show, flow and all the other parameters account for a lot. I just keep thinking what it would look like under halide :) finally someone showing how much hype there is in the big branded leds, question though, did u put some meanwells in those units ? All the non UL listed gear would make me nervous :)

    • @melevsreef

      I’ll let Duane know about your question.

    • @duaneoestreich6729
      @duaneoestreich6729 6 лет назад +1

      I haven't had a problem with any drivers in the fixtures other than old age. It would cost a fortune to upgrade to meanwell drivers in the seven (now 10) black boxes Im currently running.

    • @jestronixhanderson9898
      @jestronixhanderson9898 6 лет назад

      Your right I think I paid $50 a pop. That's two per light, near 1k just for good UL cert power sups. As much as the lights themselves. You my friend had proven leds work and that most of the high end units offer nothing more than the IOS app and better blending. Next up Saxbys tank! Buy you also have a very well looked after water column. :) hats off to your setup. Do you feel Cree and osrams fall off after two years too or just the cheap ones?

    • @duaneoestreich6729
      @duaneoestreich6729 6 лет назад

      I think that the emitters will last a long time provided there is a quality heat sink. Cree and Osrams are supposed to last twice as long than bridgelux though.

    Why have the LEDs if you still have to change those diodes every year? Much easier to change the halide bulbs. Plus, the quality of halide lights is better than any LED today. Specially with some supplemental HOT5s.
    What halide bulbs, fixture and ballast did you have?
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 лет назад

      Duane loves his LEDs and loves to tinker, it seems. Myself, I have 400w Reefbrite TwinArc MH bulbs that are 10,000K / 20,000K spectrum, and they shine each kelvin for a span each day. Plus XHO Reefbrite LEDs that replaced my super actinic VHOs I loved for so long. I run the MH in Lumenbright reflectors, and run Reefbrite ballasts that seem to fire their MH bulbs perfectly each day.

    • @Alex_Correa
      @Alex_Correa 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply, Mark!
      Hard to believe that someone "loves to tinker LEDs". Haha! Specially cause he said he is lazy for many other regular maintenance. Huh. I really don't understand the deal with LEDs. I still think it's a matter of fashion. Every one does what they like. Fine with me.
      Talking about your system..
      I've heard many say they had issues with the TwinArc bulbs and with their ballasts using other bulbs.The bulbs would be flickering for days and some wouldn't even turn on some times. I'm glad it didn't happen with you! I was going to try them out last year, but because of those many complaints I decided to wait and buy a Giesemann Spectra with 4 T5s when I can.
      Many say they had the best experiences with Giesemann bulbs with luxcore electronic ballasts using the Spectra. I like Radium bulbs with magnetic ballasts and Ushio bulbs as well.
      The ReefBrite system is recommended by the manufacture to be used all together. The ballast and bulbs, at least. They say to keep the system cool they recommend to run with their ReefBrite fixture as well. Tullio said he discourage modifying the cords of the system using ReefBrite ballast with another fixture. I'm not sure if the distribution of the light is that great with their fixture either. I know Tullio knows really well about lighting and would think the product is great, and that's why I wanted to try out.
      The Spectra is well known for it's amazing distribution and efficacy. Your Lumenbright reflectors are great and one of the very best in the market, like the Spectra!! I'm sure you must be happy with the color of the XHOs, but their PAR aren't even close to those amazing VHO's as I've heard. They are better than many LED systems out there in terms of directing the light, but still can't be compared to VHOs for PAR. The halides are doing a good job!

      I ran TwinArcs on Icecap ballasts as well as a Coralvue ballast. For the most part they worked. Sometimes they'd be in the wrong color at the time of day they should have been, so I ended up ordering their matching ballasts to reduce that occurrence. Occasonally, it still happens but that's not a deal breaker for me.
      The XHO LEDs bring out the pop in the vivid coral colors. I wish I could photograph those to show you all what my eyes see, but I haven't been able to manage that adequately enough. Also, I've never measured PAR since they are supplemental light and not the source (my 400w MH are) light for my livestock. Measuring PAR in the blue spectrum is not really best anyway, it's beyond the calibrated range of most meters.

      Yes, that's another issue when using different ballasts in general. When I was thinking of getting the ReefBrite MH system I would have to get the whole package. Another observation is that all of the other brand bulbs will be significantly under driven by the ReefBrite ballast and some bulbs will possibly, and I should say most likely, as many will agree, have their live span and spectrum compromised because of that. Electronic MH ballasts are already running the bulbs at less wattage and naturally changing some of the spectrum of those bulbs. The ReefBrite is doing that further down, saving electricity and running cooler, consequently showing a very different spectrum from what those other than ReefBrite bulbs should.
      Mr. Tullio is very right when he says the system has to be used with all components from ReefBrite. That is the only way to make sure you are actually safe running those ballasts and bulbs properly. He adds that the pendant is specially designed to run cooler than many others, and because of it's connections, is a quick match to the ReefBrite ballast. If anyone wants to try them please get the whole set up cause one complements the other as a whole. Then no problems at all, hopefully.
      In regards to the XHOs again... yeah, I know. That's why I wrote "the halides are doing a good job". Because they are the ones actually maintaining the system. I also know it's just for looks. I wanted just to point out the comparison of efficacy between theXHOs and the VHOs. VHOs are serious lights that will actually supplement the halides with such quality and add to the coral health with the spectrum, a bit of UV and amazing uniformity of a sky light pattern. While the XHO are for "supplemental looks".
      I know you care about the looks only for supplementation and that's great. I'm not criticizing you for that. It's just that there is a great quality of useful emitted light from the VHOs as a fact, and the PAR is one of the differences.
      Your corals are doing great and you are very happy with that, so no problem. :)
      Duane's tank is wonderful. man, can you imagine when he had halides? How often did he have to trim his corals?
      What about the colors of the corals? Were they more colorful under halides? Did he have any supplemental lights? Some say their corals showed better colors under LEDs, more than any other type of light they've used.

      The reason I needed to make the change is because getting 6' VHOs has become problematic. Eventually I was going to have to change, so I pulled the trigger and did it. ruclips.net/video/kyIbJff2bLY/видео.html

      I’m pretty sure he did. Big skimmer, calcium reactor, lots of water with his connected frag tanks. The sump’s refugium has no macro algaes, but there were a bunch of LPS in there. 😁
