    Beautiful tank , wow so many worms in that sump, must be hard to clean without sucking them all out!

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  5 лет назад

      From time to time, I just have to really get in there and clean it out. But first, I need to mix up a big batch of saltwater so I'm ready to replace all that is sucked out. I'm in the mood to do it lately, so in a few weeks I'll have a cleaner sump once more.

    New sub here.. Sir I must say this is maybe my 3rd or 4th video I've seen from your channel and all I can say at this point is that I'm beyond blown away..
    I kept freshwater aquariums from the age of 10 till right around 30 years old when I decided to take a break when we moved to an apartment so my daughter could attend a specific school district and well I'm 40 now so that break went much longer than I planned lol. Anyway I was recently given a 20 gallon tank with just about everything id need to start freshwater but have caught this crazy bug called saltwater or marine aquarium hobby so have yet to decide what to do with the 20 gallon. Working with a very low budget so will probably be some time yet before I can act on any decisions but I would absolutely love to attempt keeping a reef or coral aquarium. After watching this particular video I've realized just how much I don't know about marine biology whatsoever, sadly. But as with all things we can learn, eventually lol.
    Curious tho about what you might estimate your setups would or about what you think you have spent so far? At first I thought easily over 20 thousand but after this video I think I'm probably off by 70-80 thousand? Anyway sorry for the long comment but again I'm blown away by the complexity of your system and feel like I need to take a few classes before even thinking about starting my voyage. I'll definitely be tuning in for your next uploads.
    #Amazing!!

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  4 года назад

      Hi Joe. There is a lot to learn, and everything you know about freshwater doesn't apply in saltwater. Literally different worlds. That being said, you totally can do it. My channel covers a lot of topics, and my website has a bunch of practical articles you can read on any topic. The more you learn before you spend your money, the better.
      Regarding the cost of my own setup, I crunched some numbers a few years ago. Generally speaking, I tell people that it costs $47 per gallon to set up a reef tank with quality equipment before you add any water or livestock. (I have an article spelling that out, too.) A lot of what I did with my reef was DIY, which saved money but took longer naturally. The longevity of what I built is what makes that worth the effort. I'm coming up on the 6th anniversary of this aquarium in about 20 days. :)

    Shut the front door🤭 Congrats on the 5 year mark, Marc 👍 .. I remember the crisis days of old tank down and build of new. I also remember the losing a trailer on the freeway,... Egads, that could have been very bad, aka prison bad if it hit some other car behind you 🙁 Someone was looking out for you that day 👆👆👆 I always wonder when feeding time s/b for SPS and LPS with fauna powder type foods ? Do corals uptake most lights out or beginning of day or full light blasting? We need a video on why in the world you have CARX ph at 6.1 😗🤔😧🤕, I thought below 6.3 equals milkshake ☹️ Also saw your CO2 blinking like an incoming torpedo ☹️

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  5 лет назад

      It's usually good to feed the corals during lights out, when the fish are asleep and less likely to devour it. The finer the food, the less that matters though. With my reactor, usually I run it between 6.1 and 6.3, that doesn't turn it to mush. I run about 2 bubbles per second in my regulator.

    Congrats at 5 years Marc! Gotta say though the filter makes you look quite a bit more "orange" like you can from the Jersey Shores :D That said I know what it's like to "finish" the stand, I had a 180g tank that once I got the tank on the stand's frame literally 100% of my attention went to the tank and not the stand at all... don't get me wrong the tank looked fabulous but it was standing on a bunch of framing lumber (not even a nice powdered coated steel stand like you!). My next tank, ironically a Marineland deep dimension as well, I'm really going slowly because I'm getting all the stand stuff done before water hits the tank.
