the only thing holding lighting bolt back is the fact it's a line, fireball is a big ass circle and lighting bolt is a big ass line, enemy are grouped up more then they are single line other then that it's great

In my opinion, Lightning Bolt should actually do more damage than fireball to make up for it's more limited usage. And also, I feel like lightning in general should just be more deadly than fire. Fire is indiscriminate, while lighting is precise, a single deadly strike.
Edit: Also Avatar the Last Airbender

Lightning Bolt is a great spell for bad guys that have Flesh Golem bodyguards.

The "area" of lightning bolt is a 100x5 ft line. Not 100x15 ft line, as your ignition ruling would suggest.

I picked up this spell with my war wizard. The line is very precise, and feels like it fills the tactical casting niche that I’m trying to go with for the war wizard.
My dragon sorcerer party member lobs fireballs often that sometimes hit party members. Because of that the DM usually throws enemies in melee to mitigate its use. no one expects me punish 3+ enemies due to their placement as they move around the battlefield next to our allies.

Completely agree. Very underrated. But mechanically it is still slightly worse than Fireball since that spell can hit at maximum 44 targets while Lightning Bolt only hits 20 targets max. And I think it's much less likely that multiple enemies are going to be standing in a line rather than bunched up. Adding the disadvantage on targets wearing metal makes this a lot better and I think I might pick Lightning Bolt more often if that was the case. Pyromancers are a bit too common in my experience, we need more love given to Lighting and Cold spells. I'm still really excited about one day getting to play my Elsa build. But I'm not quite sure if she should be a Sorcerer (Which seems like the obvious choice) or maybe a Druid since they get more elemental spells and Elsa was very cloistered and I don't think her Charisma would be high, she seems a lot more wise so a Wisdom caster might be more thematic

This is why I love playing a sorcerer. Carrying both this and fireball(with the elemental transmutation power turn it into lightningball) gives me the best of both worlds

Actually, if we are talking about having one enemy per 5-foot square, there is a way you can hit a maximum of 1,056 enemies with a Lightning Bolt. Fireball you can't do the same with. If you are using all the stuff from Unearthed Arcana and you are a "Lore Mastery" Wizard at 6th level, you get 'Alchemical Casting.' One of the features on Alchemical Casting let's you spend a 2nd level spell slot to increase the range of a spell that has at least a 30ft range and make the range 1 mile. XD

1:34 it says here that the range is self so could you actually use it with the contingents spell?

    • @arcturuslight_
      @arcturuslight_ 4 года назад

Oh I was looking if anyone asks this. The written words are "The contingent spell takes Effect only on you, even if it can normally target others". Technically you don't target anyone, your enemies just happened to be in the area you chose, but it can be argued if they are subject to the "Effect" of the spell. I wanna use contingent lightning myself but it probably doesn't work like that.

To me, it's the spell that ever only hits 2 targets. Great stuff to give NPCs so the party can position against them. But unless your party operates well enough to form a phalanx, you're not getting your worth out of that spell as a player. And holy shit, my parties (including me tbh) don't even cooperate well enough to let the Caster cast a control spell, before whatever martial won initiative goes storming into battle recklessly, then getting downed because they're the only one in enemy range.
This is honestly why I should encourage mid-combat tactical talk as a DM.

There's a reason Lightning Bolt comes off kinda lackluster compared to Fireball.
In earlier editions Lightning Bolt could ricochet off stone. For example, if a caster shot her 100 ft bolt down a 60 ft Dungeon corridor, it would hit the wall and bounce back the remaining 40 feet. So she could end up eating her own attack. But on the other hand, casters could use stone walls to do trick shots like shoot around corners.
That was the one gimmick that made it distinct from Fireball. Well that and the "won't hit the entire party if the caster fires it into a melee".

That is very interesting and makes a ton of sense! I wonder why it was nerfed in 5e?

Tbh I rule this spell as it has to reach it's max distance bouncing and arching back and forth if it impacts stone in 5e still.

Me a level 6 sorcerer and my friend a level 6 wizard we both cast lightning bolt together in one fucking giant beam of lightning in the sky as a flare and the dm said a lighting bold of 400 ft from a magic item I have and a 20 foot wide lightning bolt has a booming blast that moves to clouds so now we do it when we have a issue with a monster😂

Step 1: hire a gnome artificer Step 2: ask him to build giant tesla coils Step 3: power them up with that spell Step 4: spray havoc upon a group of enemies during a siege.

to the "give it advantage on enemies wearing metal" ....it kinda already does? chances are if you are wearing a big hulking suit of metal armor, you aren't going to be the more dexterous
