    I can live with reverb and gain on my amp but I can't live without my Boss GE7 EQ pedal...I honestly think EQ is the most important pedal I have..it can give you great gain or scoop the mids....my 2 cents..it lets me get my sound from different guitars and pickups

    • @christschin3708

      I find not scooping the mids, when playing in a live setting, helps to cut through the drums and bass. The GE7 is a great pedal.

    As gorgeous as the pedals are, the magic is in your amazing feel and touch for the instrument

  • @Glicksman1
    @Glicksman1 4 года назад +2

    Chris,
    My three indispensable pedals are these:
    I love the Origin Effects Cali 76 compressor for the same reasons that you do. It’s an “always on” pedal. I do pair it with an Xotic SP comp so I can get that extra bit of compression and an additional set of harmonics when I want them without any one pedal doing so much that my sound screams, “Oh, so you have a compressor on, then.” The compressors are first in line on the board.
    While they are different excellent animals, I prefer the Klon Centaur to the King of Tone. For subtle overdrive, it has not yet been matched. However, many who have a Klon do not turn the gain up very far and thus do not experience all that it can do. Similarly, the tone knob is very sensitive and can EQ your tone very nicely.
    The third pedal in this “essential” list would be the Fender TRE-VERB. With the choice of optical, bias or harmonic tremolos and ’63 (big box),’65 (in amp ) and the rarely-modeled plate reverbs, it’s all I need for those effects. All of this pedal’s effects are clean and articulate but with good harmonic content. It’s a very good pedal and I use it often.
    As have you and many others, I too have had numerous pedals on my board over the years and have often changed them. So far, these three are keepers.
    Oh, and I also appreciate simplicity in all things, particularly music gear.
    Cheers.

    • @ShiningEyeBrigade
      @ShiningEyeBrigade 3 года назад +2

      @@Bluesbreaker-uf8ti I know you are being cheeky, but just to say: I got an early Klon before they skyrocketed in price. I think I paid like $225 or something like that. I really like it... for very specific situations. For me, on certain amps, it sounds mediocre to bad. Same for most amps at medium to lower volumes. Where I find it shines is taking an already fantastic tone, that already has some nice grit and at loud volume where the amp is working pretty hard, and then kicking it into this singing lead tone that cuts well. But, in my experience, it does not just take a solid clean tone and make it fantastic. I can only use it at really loud gigs, like outdoor festivals or really big auditoriums. Since I’ve not played those in many years, the Klon just sits on my shelf. :(
      I could be not setting it correctly, but that’s my experience anyway. So I just share this to add a different perspective to the praise it often gets.

    I agree with the king of tone sentiment. I have overdrives of all types...zendrives, tubescreamers, sd-1, klon this, transparent that...blah blah blah. But the KOT has been the main drive on my pro board for over two years. At this point, it’s a matter of familiarity and reliability. It reacts predictably to any tweak in any environment with any guitar. I’m sure that given any unique situation, you could find a “better” sounding overdrive (although even then...things are way too subjective, really). But when you look at the bigger picture...the KOT sounds good EVERY time in EVERY room. Above all else, that kind of track record makes it a really difficult drive to replace, although many have tried.

    I got on a pedal building kick around 2010. No experience, had no clue what i was doing, just looked up some schematics, researched what a transistor was, and resistor, capacitor, op amp, etc...bought parts, and started soldering.
    To my suprise everything i built sounded as good or better than anything ive ever played.
    I made an ocd pedal, based on scematic i found online, and then bought the actual ocd, looked at it, and it had more transistors than what was shown on the schematic i found, but to my amazement, the one i built sounded every bit as good and same functions as the ocd, complete with a mid scoop switch. I also built 2 fuzz pedals, and another overdrive.
    Was quite an addiction, had to give it up for other time constraint reasons, but i only use the pedals i made, have not bought one since.

    Really good pedals for sure. I think the KOT as great as it is sounds boxy. It just sounds like a pedal much like a great tubescreamer with a little more full sound. Have you tried the kingsley page or effectrode tube drive. I moved to the effectrode tube drive that allows for some tube changing in the pedal( I use two 12Au7 and a 12At7). It made my kot sound small and very much stiff and boxy in comparison. That little bit of sag feeling and real amp bottom end with the tube drive just sounds like an incredible b channel. Love your playing. Been a fan for years and I'm using much of the same gear as you so thanks for sharing some of your secrets.

    You are an awesome player and as a blues based player I should have suspected amp reverb, which suggests that the effect you can't live without, to the point of not considering it as such, is reverb. I totally agree.
    Bone dry clean sounds like nails on a chalkboard garbage unless your venue gives natural reverb, or you are playing traditional jazz and the archtop and amp are topnotch.
    Otherwise the no reverb players (lots of guys who use drenched sounding delay claim to hate reverb but I believe they simply don't like tradirional spring reverb with overdrivenn tones).
    Having said that cranked tube amps without reverb can sound great, but bedroom level bone dry amp sound requires absolute pristine set up, perfect intonation, perfect tuning, perfext technically speaking, and liberal doses of vibrato, bending precisely to pitch, and great dynamics and phrasing.
    Don't get me wrong, although some guys use so much reverb that it has a billowing effect. The opposite effect of what reverb is meant to accomplish, which in my opinion is not cover up sloppy playing, but to give width and depth to the sound, inspire the player by making the rig somewhat more forgiving.
    The opposite experience of going to a party, getting put on the spot to play, and the host pulling out a $50 garage sale guitar with 20 year old strings, no set up, with said POS guitar living in his garage untouched prior to being thrust into your hands, and when you try to say "well there is amp, so what's the point?" the nightmare becomes real as he presents a dusty pigsnose amp and 4 foot cord covered in sticky duct tape that makes a crackling hissing sound as The host plugs in the guitar already in your hands. The minute you touch the tuners to get the thing as in tune as possible, which probably makes things worse, the mere act of turning the tuners, pulls the neck into submission and the first chord you play makes you feel sick and embarrassed, like you are taking a dump in a crowded prison cell with multiple strangers evaluating your level of disgustingness with a variety of facial expressions ranging from cringing, smirking, amused at your embarrassing performance and pity (the most kind in terms of intent but the most crushing to your ego) .
    Every guitar player who is serious enough to be known as someone who is fun to watch play, has had this experience and, hopefully learned that you only play your own gear or the gear that a cursory visual lets you know the owner is a musician and takes care of his reasonably decent gear.
    For example, he has a guitar on a stand with clean strings, maybe other guitars in the room, some sort of music library, a functional amp like a fender blues junior or some other quality small amp. Maybe he even has a couple of recognizable pedals like a fulltone OCD, or some other quality overdrive and a TC electronics flashback or Boss digital delay.
    Now the odds are in your favor that you can play up to your capability and maybe even enjoy being put on the spot.
    Ahhh, the pros and cons of being a guitar player. 😆

    This video makes me want a compression pedal. That clean tone alone sounds great, just amplified a bit with the compressor.

    Morning Glory, Flux Echo (but I the Echorec is also a favorite), Flint.
    Secret Preamp too, but I never turn it off so I just think of it as part of my amp now. 😆

    I always keep coming back to these three pedals - Diaz TX Ranger into a Analogman modded TS(1st run TS9) to a Ibanez AD-9 or Lovepedal EPH3 Can't help but notice those 3 pedals of yours add up to over a 1000 pounds

    Love your pedal choices. I would pick three similar but different pedals off my board. Keeley compressor pro, Menatone Fish factory overdrive and Dawner Prince Boonar delay. Of course I have a Les Paul And Marshall Jubilee in the Arsenal for the no pedal necessary approach too :). Cheers Chris glad I was introduced to you on That Pedal Show. Keep on playing! Oh ... and I am on the long waiting list for a KOT. Someday :).

    Awesome collections of pedals on that board even the old bluesbreaker pedal by Marshall I used that for a long time. For me my favorite 3 is catalinbread Belle epoque, catalinbread Rah pedal and my zendrive. But that's today, lol.. the Belle epoque I just love that pedal very touch sensitive you can get modulation out of it and the preamp boost is real nice that's probably my favorite

      Fred Nielsen Cheers Fred! I’ve been really intrigued to try the RAH. I’m guessing it lives up to the hype? And of course, the Zendrive is incredible. Come to think of it, I don’t know why I don’t use mine more!

    • @fredn2735
      @fredn2735 6 лет назад

      Buck and Evans The RAH pedal is extremely touch-sensitive works great with humbuckers and you don't necessarily have to do the Jimmy Page thing but it does remind me of a hi watt type amp it's just a cool pedal
