Since your cross country road trip are you still using the RC suspension? Researching for my xj and wondering how it held up. Lots of bad reviews on longevity and wondering if you had any suspension issues.

Sweet Jeep, I’m on my second xj and I think above 3” lifts it’s hard to keep the wobble away. A high steer knuckle is probly the best solution to flatten drag link and trac bar and eliminate it
My bone stock 29” tire 01’ xj has the 40-50 mph wobble going right now but I expected it, last couple times I’ve taken it out I can hear the Trac bar ball joint clicking. Hard braking and easy accel it has a little wobble now

I just bought a 60 anniversary edition no rust love you videos. I’m putting a 3” rough country in it. It came from Wilmington N.C. Planning on some over landing in the Allegheny National Forest here in Pennsylvania. Learning all I can about the xj.
Hope you were able to get out and enjoy some time in the forest. I am seeing that a lot are closing down, even for dispersed camping in some areas. I was lucky my trip was last year. That could have been interesting this year!

i also had a bad wobble in my 01 xj dd at exactly 45-55mph. so, since my jeep was all original i decided to replace everything in the front, i did bearings, ball joints, grand cherokee tie rods, stabilizer, all my u-joints and even the axle shaft joints.... i did it all, but still had a damn wobble. so, as i was disappointed that i did not find this problem, i then went on and did a tire rotation. i now found the wobble is in the rear. it ends up i have a slightly bent wheel.!.
My 91' xj wobbles at the same 45-55 mph. I wonder if all of them do?
@@JackRobertson17 first thing to do is get alignment and tires balanced. If that doesn't fix it the best advice I can give is jack up the front end and have a friend turn the steering wheel left and right while you look at every steering component. There should be zero play. Also check control arm bushings. They may look fine but still be dry rotted. The Track bar can often times round out its mounting bracket at the passanger side causing a wobble too.

They have worked great. Just don’t keep anything in there you are going to sweat over if it gets stolen. Unless you have them locked I always consider that a possibility but have not had an issue yet.

The ideas here are great, as a Jeep owner for the last 23 years, I can appreciate the custom work that can be done to XJ, WK, and ZJ Jeeps which are very cheap to buy in the UK and maintain if you pick the right ones that have not been abused too much. I run a WK 5.7 HEMI on LPG which gives me the same running costs as a small car.
Thanks for the comment! I bet most people wish they got the kind of mileage you are getting with your set-up. That is usually one of the biggest down-sides when people talk about the, Oh the money I could have saved on my 7 month trip last year haha!
XJ's are getting harder to come by for a steal here anymore. They actually made a top 10 list for resale vehicles. That has driven the cost up even more....for 20+ year old vehicles! Glad I got my 2 when I did.

I really liked your idea about tie down spots in the rear using original screws. Overall more storage than I'd ever need, I always love a 4.5" lift with 33s really dig how you spent time with this xj and made it your own most people worry so much about resale or judgmental looks even that they won't just take a step back and make a vehicle into an art. Great video Great jeep and honestly everyone that runs your rear axle runs 33s or bigger so they can't be that bad

I have a 89 XJ and I'm happy with it, I only have a 2inch lift on it, I had to cut around the wheels just to fit the tires, it's my daily driver with 240k miles. I'm learning as I go.
That is what I did, and still do.... learning as I go.

nice build! I have a similar rack with the same U-bolt/plastic attachment. When I placed roto-pack gas cans up there, the weight slid the rack back and forth. I added neoprene to the top plastic clamp and pulled vacuum line over the U-bolt and the added friction solved the sliding.
Gary Button Seems to be an issue for this rack. I am still looking for a permanent solution so I will look at something like you did. Thanks for the tip.

nice xj ! i have a 98 xj trail rig and 01 xj dd, i also have the same roof rack...
i flipped my roof rack mounting u-bolts upside down to keep the mounting u-bolts from poking the stuff in the basket. i put the u-bolts in through the top of the basket so that they hang down, i flipped over the plastic part of the mounts over and cut a notch out of them so that they fit over my round cross bars (Yakima). i used standard nuts to hold it all down and it sits lower too.

Bad ass rig, Dana 35c means custom 87 to 89 Dana 35s we’re not c-clips little bit on the plus side,but 90 and up Dana 35s we’re equipped with the c-clips

Nice setup man. Only suggestion is to keep snatch block out of anywhere that requires you to have to open the rear tire carrier to get to. I've been wedged a couple times with carrier up against a tree or rock

Ronalds Easy Fix Agreed. Agreed! Already have a transfer case plate I will be putting on soon.. The fuel tank skid I purchased is a heavy beast and overkill. Since I have too many overland/cross country plans for this rig I won’t be taking it on questionable trails anymore, especially ones with boulders. Skids are a good safety net regardless so I will be doing light weight options eventually.
For the lights the opposite is better, spot lights on the roof to extend thier reach, and flood lights on the bumper.

How far does the front bumper stick out from the grille and how far from the tailgate does the spare tire sit? I'm looking for bumpers as we speak. I have 33x10.50s on 8" wide wheels with 4.75 bs. Thanks

You guessed right about this one ... It is “ I Don’t Give A XJ” because I don’t care what some in the Jeep community feel about XJs, and I drive one because it works for me. I like the utility of it and it is a great overlanding vehicle :)

Nice XJ. Thanks for the tour. I just put a 4.5" Zone lift kit in mine and my SYE is showing up today and two new Adam's driveshafts showing up next week sometime. We take our ATVs/UTVs to the Black Hills every year. I hope to be able to bring my XJ some year.

Love your rig! So tired of all these unlimited budget mall crawlers dressed up as rock crawlers with ridiculous LS-3's stupid over the top tires, drive lines, and forget about fuel range, no regard for cost, Highlift jacks mounted conspicuously (displayed) but no spare tire or no jack points etc... Or trailer queens that can't drive on the roads at all. no one does true overlanding rigs. Limited funds also forces you to think and prioritize.
Yep, when you buy a XJ the aftermarkets get in line and try to tempt you into buying stuff you don't need. The bug has got me at age 60. I picked mine up a year ago Dec 2017. It is my second one. I did not realize what I had with the first one. If I knew what I know now I would have kept it and upgraded that one.
Got my lift kit and wheels on it. Getting a SYE and two new driveshafts next week then building my own front and rear bumpers, rock sliders and roof rack. I might not even paint any of it...then go to the mall...
Fuel range on these I6 engines are already trash when paired with even 33's, lockers & gears. Swapping over to an LS "could" improve that while giving way better performance in the obstacles or driving on fire roads through mountains. Snagging beefy driveshafts should already be a priority for any offroader spending time in the rocky terrains. And, having you hi-lift ready to grab is a great idea. Nothing is more annoying then playing twister to get a recovery tool.
I love how you drop the trailer queen excerpt. They aren't built for road use or overlanding. 15+ years competing in rock crawling and I have never met an owner thinking his/her trailer queen was an overlanding rig.
I understand your frustration with the culture. But bashing different builds and components is misdirected. It's not the trailer queens, or the overlanders, or the expedition crawlers. It's the imbeciles driving these rigs without a clue. So don't bash my LS swapped XJ with big tires and a beefy suspension, lol.
@@bradpopwell7053 i have a 99 classic. 3.5 inch lift. Did a sye and 1 ton kit. On 31s now. But i did a 4:10 gear swap. Best thing ever. I may do 32s and a 4.5 lift. My mileage may actually have improved over the 30s and the 3:55 s.
If you put basic bearing grease in the hinge of the rear tire carrier it’ll stop squealing for a really long time
What model XJ does that gauge cluster come in? I was about to buy a pillar mount, but would rather get something that looks stock.
Also the wobble problem could be a bulge in the tire or when I run my 35 km2 on my 3/4 ton Chevy at street pressure I'm bouncing all over the place doing highway speeds
Yeah most of it ended up being due to balance. When I rotated my tires it changed everything. Spin balancing them all again has taken care of it.
Yeah also an issue with my rims and tires. I always just throw the wobbly wheels in the rear and then can hardly notice it hahah

In this video the bottom cushion is removed (that is the easy cushion to take out) and the back part of the seat was just folded down.
However before my long overland trip I removed that cushion as well so it would be more level and I could use the space under it for storage. I built a plywood platform in place of the cushion and covered it with felt.

Solid Build Progress. I had the dreaded xj wobble as well. Going with full cavfab one-ton steering and OTA trackball fixed mine from the front end. BTW, how often do you find yourself using the winch?
Jake Grove Photo Never had to yet for myself. Used it for someone else a couple of times and to pull out a shrub in the yard haha.
With the front lunchbox locker I have been able to get up and out of a couple of situations where I probably would have needed the winch. I do like having it just in case though.
I had to stop the video 0:20 in and just say, you have the greatest mod in existence! That tiny jeep off-roading over the fender flair... that is genius and I want one lol. Although I don't have a jeep... I have a 88 Dakota with jeep axles, jeep transmission and jeep transfer case however. Can anyone make me a 88 Dakota sticker so I can rip off this guys idea?
Haha...Thanks! Actually, if you can find, or make, an outline of an 88 Dakota, there are sellers on eBay where they will print a one-off for you. They will be around $5 or $6. I have made a few decals that way. Good luck!
Cool beans looks like my first jeep. I have had several. Now I daily drive my 1998. In the pic. There becoming hard to find .idiots destroy them or tweakers destroy them by neglecting maintenance. So keep up the maintenance . Don't roll it. They keep the value. Selling for 8 to 10 grand here in reno ,nv . As mine sits. I laugh when people offer to buy it. I always say 10 grand it's your otherwise leave me alone. Have a great day man.
I daily drive mine as well. I actually miss driving it when I have rentals on business trips. I noticed how good ones are getting hard to find, even here in NC. The last 2 I bought I thought maybe I would sell later, but can't bring myself to ever do it, so I have 3. This one is my favorite and don't ever plan on selling it. Thanks for the comment.

How you have yours set up is where Im wanting to take mine. I have a black 98 XJ that Im modding into a camping/expedition vehicle. Its the 3rd one that I've had over the years, I love my XJ's.

Im currently waiting for a day off work to install a Discovery 4x4 roof top tent and am hoping to have the rig on the road later this year.
Im in England and Ive noticed a similar situation to what others have commented on below, in that that the XJs are getting harder to find and are going up in value. Here in the UK you can find a decent one for about £1500 - 2000. My first two I didnt pay more than 1000 for.

Battleship Overland After my last road trip I am seriously contemplating putting a rooftop tent on mine. This Cherokee is my first love.... and you never forget your first... so I am keeping it. I have 2 others and since good ones are hard to find, will keep those for a while too. This is the one where all my money and work go into, so a tent is a good next step. Just subbed to your channel. Love your vids! You mentioned that you swapped out the instrument panel. I need to do the same thing. I don’t have any temp or battery gauges in my 94XJ. Was it a plug n play? Or did you have to do any mods?
Guy Fernandez Thanks! It is a simple plug and play for all Cherokees It only requires that you remove the dash panels (really easy), a few screws around the plastic moldings to get to the panel, and then a few screws around the panel. It pops right out when you pull it then. There is a way to test the other panel to see what the mileage is before you decide to use it (if that matters) using a cordless battery and some wires. I think Matt from bleepinjeep has a video on that. It didn't matter to me so I just found a clean one, but my mileage went from 143k to 212k. I just took pics before and after so I could do the math on the actual mileage if I needed it. So how do you like that painted headliner? Thinking about doing that because I didn't know there were holes in my roof due to the previous owner taking off a roof rack and leaving the holes uncovered so if rotted my liner out. I feel like painting it is the easiest way to go
It is still working out well years later. I painted Hurculiner around the edges, (3-4") to make the material a bit more ridged, and spray painted the rest. I have not had any issues with it flaking or cracking, even with low and high temps. It was a very clean surface when I did it though. All of the foam needs to be cleaned off or it won't adhere properly.
What kind of box is that? Did you buy them or did you make them?

Dude, I see you installed the roof rack on the stock bars (plastic+alu). Are they strong enough to stand the roof rack even when loaded on the go? Thx
Marco Marucci I have not had an issue fully loaded. Even had a 250lb drunk guy up there moving the entire Jeep back and forth as a ride for fun. No damage to the rack, rails, or roof.
I do have 4 stock rails though. 2 attached to the tack and 2 to burden some of the load. I am on a 7 month Overlanding trip and am not concerned at all with 250lb up there.
What are those cargo boxes you have inside the Jeep?

Dylan Morgan Thanks. Yes it is a X series.. The shackles were on it with the old lift and just used them for this one. No issues so far and I have done quite a bit with it in the last 2 years. Not sure of the make since I reused them from the previous owner. They are adjustable though and they measure 6.5”/7.5” from the upper to lower bolts. Hope that helps. Any chance I can ask a favor of you? I know you're on the continental divide trip (just watched tonight's video) so I'm sorry to bother you with this. If you get a chance could you measure the tire carrier, drivers side, horizontal tube from it to the hatch? I'm heavily modifying mine but I haven't mounted it yet to get the measurement. I want to put the highlift between the hatch and tire carrier instead of on top of the tire carrier.
I am showing 3.5” from the recessed part of the hatch (the license plate area) to the edge of the tube. That recessed area is directly across from the tube
Actually it changes top to bottom. The bottom is 3.25 and the top, toward the bend, is 4.25”

I saw someplace that you may have your roof rack mounts upside down that the wing nuts should face downward......idk......pry true
It is possible, but the hardware stripped too easily regardless. That was my only beef with that roof rack. I have since made my own and they did not move at all during my 30k trip. Small price to pay for a good cheap rack.

Ive been following your journey..can remember what you use for cold storage ice chest or fridge?
Chuck Chavez I bought a Wagan chiller cooler but left it at home because of the size. I don’t have anything to keep things cold. I didn’t want to use up the space. I have a soft sided small cooler that I have used 1 time, other than that I just use my floor vent with the AC on to keep my water cold haha.

What did you use to attach cargo nets to the roof of the jeep? Did you actually drill through the roof? Are they all magnets?
While the headliner was out I put in grommets. The hooks from the cargo net slip into the grommet holes. I did a detailed headliner review here....

Did your gas can fit without any modification? I have a very similar gas can and the lid hits not allowing it to drop into place.
Kevin Christopher Mine fit ok. I heard the newer NATO cans don’t fit, but the older style ones do. Mine is fairly old so that is probably why I don’t have an issue. If yours is also old too than I’m not sure why it wouldn’t fit.
Can you cut down the front metal piece that holds it in place? Maybe if you had a bit more room, for a better angle, it might drop in.
I’m not sure if you said it but what is the mileage on the Jeep before the road trip? Planning on doing a road trip to Colorado wondering if I have high hopes
Jacob Neely Hard to say really. The engine was rebuilt at some point before I got it due to the head gasket (I was told). I also changed the gauge cluster which changes the mileage reading. I am estimating 160k when I left, and that may be different than what I have told other people, since I am guessing. Either way, it is up there.
Maintenance and preventative maintenance are big for me when it came to trusting it would get me home. And 29k miles later, it did! If it yours is running ok, you should be fine. Just listen and look for any issues and tackle them before they bite you, but that goes for any 20 year old vehicle.

Is that Aussie Locker up front loud when turning?
It clicks when turning in 2WD but nothing overly loud. It is noticed by people inside and outside the vehicle just because it is not something they are not used to hearing. The clicking is a lot more aggressive in turns when it is engaged in 4WD. Took some getting used to and is worrisome at first, but it is designed to work that way so you get over it. I even inspected the locker after a while to make sure everything was working properly and that I wasn't wearing anything away ....but no issues to date. I would replace this one with another if needed. Works great and a dramatic difference in 4WD capability.

Then that means you are enjoying it. Nothing wrong with that. Mine has more bruises than the camera shows along with a couple of trail scars, but now that I am focusing on over-landing I don’t take as many risks on trails.
Hook your sway bars back up no more wobble
At the time of this video the wobble was better without the sway bars. The main cause was unbalanced tires I figured out. Sway bars are now back in place.

Have you put a SYE on it? And is that just a regular length driveshaft?
RubberDrunky No SYE was needed. Just a transfer case drop. I put on a new front driveshaft because the previous owner managed to damage the old one from never maintaining it. When I bought the new one the company did measure the space before making mine. I imagine it is a slightly different length but never measured them side by side. The cost of the new one was $250 which included Spicer U-Joints and Cardan joint.

Ethan Copple Regardless if you want to lift it for going off road or just because you like the look, just go for it if you will keep the for a while and get to enjoy it. If it is just for looks then get a simple spacer lift and save some money. If for going off road every now and then, look at add-a-leaf lifts. That way you won’t be putting a ton of money into something the earth wants to reclaim and you still have a lifted Jeep.
If you are going to keep it then putting a lift on it is an easy decision. Just be careful of the unknown. If it is that rusted, more than likely a lift will lead to other issues like broken bolts and brackets when putting it in.
The decision all depends on how much enjoyment you will get out of it.
The thing is through the struts an shocks the mounting places it’s rusty I’m not sure if itl hold or not
Could always sand that area down and see if it is just surface rust or worse. If worse, then you could always reinforce that area, but it could take a lot of time and effort. The juice may not be worth the squeeze though. Best of luck!

King Bass I would think they would, but have never tried those so don’t want to steer you wrong. Make sure they have a return option in case they don’t.
