Terrific movie. I heard on a radio interview that the boys were picked because they were good surfers, they weren't actors previously, rather than trying to teach two actors how to surf confidently, which they did an amazing job. Loved going back in time when things were less complicated.
I think Sando knows about the relationship between the boy and his wife or he has doubts about it and at the same time Sando sounds like he wants and trying to be a father for a long time but it didn't work, so he doesn't care about the real father as long as his wife gonna have this baby in his home and raise it as Sando's child .
You have to remember that this movie took place in the 70's. It is about a teenager's coming of age, which often includes sexual experiences. The reality is that teen boys do get involved with older women. What now is considered rape and porn would not have been the case in rhe 70's. This movie was accomplished in really good taste; Simon was very authentic in the writing of the script. It is a lovestory about a teen boy's first sexual relationship and his overcoming fear and boundaries. Fear of the water, fear of where his love for Sando's wife would take him, and fear of not being accepted for who he is by Sando. Beautiful movie very well accomplished.Hats off to Simon Baker!
I feel like the movie could’ve done without that part. What was the point? Why make it sleazy and gross? They could’ve created a better plot to pull the friendship apart

No, the book was set there, Winton lives there, but the film was made along the north NSW coast, which Simon knows well, and used to surf as a youngster.
This is a wicked woman. She took the one thing Sander had in those boys and she snatched it away and abused the boy in the proxies. What a selfish, hateful person. If she couldn’t live with Sander, she should have left. Instead, she killed a pure thing and ruined that young boy’s life.
Trust me. IT didnt ruin his life or any teenage boy that every really had this experience. Men are built different than women. Sex is the strongest force next to having to eat for all animals. Sexual desire cannot be resisted often, no matter how forbidding, when it is consenting.

Simon Baker adapted a much darker story and made it almost acceptable, the boy became a man and was able to stand up for himself in the end and say what was acceptable for him and what he was not prepared to do.
I like the cinematography of the movie, Australian rural and its beaches are very well presented, but I do not understand the plot of the movie. Storyline does not attract me, though the two boys with Australian accent reminds me of the time I spend in Australia. I am big fan of Australian rural and Australian lifestyle.

Well, it might be the opposite if you watch till the end. Because of her damaged knee (she was not able to ski anymore anyways), that baby might be her new purpose and enjoyment. They were probably with husband unable to conceive for a while. Thus seems like it was solution for them as a couple. While the theme, by the way from book with same name, is about fear and at the end we see the young boy yo have mastered his own boundaries having learned his capabilities and evaluate situations.
I thought it was a great movie about surfing and coming of age until it turned into child pornography. I guess some people think that's normal coming of age. 😢
Splendid movie for those who can watch without prejudice, the entangled fears and frustrations, the courage, the domineering between life and death, the animal survival instinct, the first love, the ego death....wow so deep for those who can see with heart eyes. Breath and keep your life balance, not too afraid, not too courageous, just a thin line in between. Bravo 11/10
The come of age and the water scenes are compelling. The sexual fantasy between the boy and woman, I am a sensitive watcher, it was upsetting. Maybe you could add an age restriction?

Each magnet attract the same, the higher vibes connected and the low frustrated vibes attracted each other.
