- We head to the market in downtown Leiden to see what is for sale and shop for our groceries.
TandTgoDutch is a channel following the life of Tracey and Travis. Two Americans living in The Netherlands with their Minature Husky, Tabasco. We explore our new home and some places around Europe and talk about some of the successes and struggles we have gone through during the process.

Great to see you enjoying the market experience. The market in Leiden is great! Don’t forget to walk past De Burcht next time. It is a hidden away gem, right in the middle of the centre, next to the market.
Thank you so much for the suggestion and for the support! We appreciate you!
Leiden is my favourite town in The Netherlands. If I win the lottery (or the stock market), I'll be living out the rest of my days there.
Welcome in the Netherlands! I like the videos. Fun to see there is a difference how Americans and Europeans carry flowers. In the USA people tend to carrry flowers holding them up, while in Europe a lot of people carry them with the heads down.
So interesting! Thank you for watching!
Its great to see all the things that you guys enjoy and being appreciative for in Leiden and the rest of our country, what we all take for granted.
We are beyond grateful to have this experience and have nothing but respect for the Dutch culture. Thank you so much for watching!
The roses you buy in the US are most likely imported from The Netherlands. The country produces 60% of all cut flowers world-wide.
Happy to see you enjoying your new environment!
Thank you so much! We are enjoying it so far! Appreciate you watching.
oh you found freshly baked stroopwafels. They are the best! Nice to see that you are enjoying al the wonderful flavours of The Netherlands!
They really are the best! Appreciate you watching our video!!
Nice to see you enjoy our country! Sorry it's not Texas but I hope you like it here! 😊
Change is always good! Thank you for watching!
Great video. We adore the Netherlands. It was great to explore with you. The markets are definitely the place to go. X
Thank you so much fo watching! The markets here are outstanding.
Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy!!!!!!!
Thank you Bert! We appreciate your support!!
Tip for buying "Gouda cheese"... Gouda is actually the default cheese here. When people say cheese , the mean Gouda unless specified otherwise. There are 3 main types , young , "belegen" (rested for a while) and old. So when you want lets sat, old Gouda, just order old cheese, you'll sounds more local.
Thank you for the tip! We'll put it in to use the next time we go to the market!
Almost any village and town and city has this type of a market in the Netherlands and usually that is where locals get most of their their food for the week. In my town there is even a market twice a week.
bij ons in de stad is er 5x markt per week
For your info 70% of all flowers that are sold around the world are sold via that Dutch trade and a big part of the flowers you see in the USA is coming out of the Netherlands 🇳🇱… enjoy your life in the Netherlands 😃👍🏻
Wow! That's impressive! Thank you for watching.
I live in Leiden and I know The guy who sells the stroopwafels 😂❤️
Like Gouda, Leiden has it’s own style of cheese. Especially the one with cumin is great. And as always the older the better!
Ooh! Cannot wait to try! Thanks for the suggestion!
@@TAndTGoDutch they call it komijnekaas.
@@20kilovolt `:-) I allways call it "Leidse kaas" .
I loved this so much!!!! So cool seeing your POV while you walk around! 🙌🙌🙌
Awesome video & so glad to see that you love our beautiful city. I hope you two (and the dog) feel welcome here and will continue to have a good time, make friends, and make video's. All the best from a fellow Leidenaar! (Maybe you did get a chance to record a video of the Three October festivities?) Cheers from Arie
Thank you so much for watching! We appreciate your support! Tabasco seems right at home already, hopefully we will feel that way soon.
The weekly markets are heaven in any city :-) Again: You have to come to Antwerp! We have every early Saturday morning "de Vreemdelingenmarkt" a huge open air market near the Stadsschouwburg with a lot of foreign foods !
They really are. Hopefully we'll make it to Antwerp soon enough!
Oh my that market looks amazing and has made me really hungry! Lol. Is it only on weekends? 👍🏼
It’s on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. The Saturday market is a bit bigger though!
Firstly, welcome to the Netherlands! I love it that you chose to move Leiden instead of Amsterdam. Cause there is so much more to the Netherlands then Amsterdam. Enjoy yourself and look forward to all future videos!
Thank you for the warm welcome! We are having a blast exploring it all. Appreciate you watching!
Wanna see more markets like this one!
We can't wait to explore them all!
These markets are very well stocked compared to USA. I want one of everything!
They really are! The cost of flowers alone is worth going. This past weekend, we saw tulips for three euros a bouquet!
i worked in Leiden for years in the past and love the city, i cant go to markets without also getting Haring and Paling :) but yeah, Dutch markets are amazing and usually multicultural produce and "street" foods. O yeah and also i always get my potatoes and onions from the market because of the farmers offering them for cheaper and more types to choose from, and i just like to support the farmers.
We love supporting them too! We have yet to try Haring. Thank you so much for watching!
It's so weird seeing my town on RUclips 😅
Ja kip is lekker
Great video!
Appreciate your support!
you should be buying flowers right before they develop (knoppen) so they last longer.. that way you can see them openn open slowly and develop before they inevitably die off
get the ones which are still closed, you should enjoy them longer
Thank you for the tips! We appreciate you watching!
You can get macaroni and cheese (I assume that you mean that with mac and cheese) microwave meals in Dutch supermarkets, known as macaroni en kaas. But of course they're not so good as when you make them yourself.
Absolutely. With all of the amazing kaas here though, we would prefer to make it ourselves. Thank you for watching!
Love your video’s
We appreciate your support!
@@TAndTGoDutch how was Leiden Liberation day om 3 oktober….
Gezellig over de markt. Awesome video, thanks for sharing!! Haha 😆, 100gr cheese...., it sounds like an insulte in NL. A 'half pondje' (half a pound, 250gr) is the absolute minimum.... the extra won't last long anyway.
Ha, we realized that after the fact! Thank you for watching our journey!
Welcome to the Netherlands. I just discovered you on youtube and managed to look at two of your videos this morning before having to prepare to go to work.
To help you a little with your Dutch, next time when buying a stroopwafel, ask for the Dutch pronunciation. You will notice the stroop part has a different sound.
I would recommend to learn some Dutch. Although not really required as a large part of us do speak English, you will experience it will change your feel of being part of the Dutch society.
Oh, did I mention I like your videos ?
Thank you for watching Erik! We are in the (very) beginning stages of learning Dutch. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy watching our journey!
I go there often too! If I ever see you guys, I’ll definitely say hi!🌷🌷🌷
Please do! Thank you so much for your support!
I used to study in Leiden, and let me tell ya.. back before the 'rona, you wouldn't be able to *move* through that market!! Leiden is an university city, and normally all the students AND the locals shop at the market, but because of the 'rona, classes have been online and the city is oddly quiet... :)
Wow, that's hard to picture it being busier than it was that day! Thank you so much for watching!
Mac and cheese, the oldest gouda you can get! At least that is the one I use. Gruyère is too 'tame' for my liking.
Hey this sounds great!!!!
Dear Friends, your stance towards food, is new to dutchmen. I have never seen a dutchman behaving towards food, like you do. You do nothing wrong, but i didnot see it before, here. Wish you well.....
Interesting. This video is rather old, and I must say, our attitude towards food has changed so much.
I'm not a fish eater myself, but kibbeling is something I can recommend.
We haven't tried that just yet, but it's on our list! Thank you so much for watching.
@@TAndTGoDutch Beware the quality can differ take a fish shop that is crowded.
I'm Dutch and my girlfriend is American from Hawaii and we live in the USA , I was raised in Den Haag and moved out of the Netherlands in 1978 and now been living in the US for 26 years . We're curious how did you get a job and apartment in the NL since I know many people are on a waiting list for an apartment ?? Did you have to be vaccinated to immigrate ??
We did have to be vaccinated to get on the flight over, but not really after. We did get our covid pass which lets us sit inside of restaurants. I came over as a transfer and spent a lot of time trying to find a good place. Lots of time on funda lol.
Welcome , hope you love leiden as mutch as I do ❤️
Thank you! We are loving it so far. We appreciate you watching our journey!
It seems like the market has been moved ...
That's interesting you say that. We were there two weekends ago and it was still along the canals.
Hahaha import KAASKOPPEN .. (always cheese see said) welkom en geniet van Nederland.
I love your videos. Just a small pronounciation tip for the "stroopwafel". Pronounce the Dutch "oo" as the "o" you use in English language in the word open.
Thank you so much for the tip. We're glad you are enjoying our content. We appreciate you watching so much!
Come on , comment on the amount of bikes parked. At the start and during the whole video (maybe it is already becoming normal for you , and that would be great :). I like the video
Haha, I guess maybe we thought the bikes were too obvious. Thanks for your support, it means a lot!
So you like Kate and Sydney pie?
Not to put any country down but thanks to the E.U. you get REAL food here.
Are you going to learn Dutch?
Hello! Yes, we are slowly learning the language, and building up our confidence in speaking it. It's certainly not easy. Thank you for watching!
@@TAndTGoDutch /
🤔Also not easy because most people from the Netherlands are used to speak foreign languages😇
Very cool market! I did notice one nuance. Everyone let me know about this. Every vendor you visited greeted you, but were a bit cold. However, any other customer who was speaking Dutch with them, they were smiling. Is it just me, is it about the language, or is it about getting to know them over time?
Interesting- We felt everyone was pretty friendly to us. We've only been here a little over a month, and we're building up our confidence in speaking dutch.
Thanks for your feedback.
@@TAndTGoDutch nah it's just the way they are. over here they don't have the "customer's always right and thank you for your business" mindset.
I live in the same town and as a "native" I get treated the same, it's just a lack of enthusiasm, more of a cultural thing, nothing personal.
When you visit the market often and live in the same city, the market seller gets to know his costumers,
And when you have to talk english you have to swits youre brain.
I dont know a lot of country where they will talk english back to you like in the netherlands
It is bc we have to switch to english and that costs brain power. Not cold just thinking a bit ;).
You should buy your vegetables on the market also. Much cheaper!
Absolutely! We recently discovered how much more affordable (and delicious) market vegetables and fruits are!
To me the Stroopwafel man seems to have a bad day 🤭
I think he just didn’t like being filmed without consent. I’m quite surprised people don’t make more of a fuss about it.
Get away drom Gouda.
Go Stompetoren or Beemster for the cheese.
Always belegen or better.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Yes, I love Stompetoren !
Try Doruvael (from the Gouda / Woerden region). And after the Leidse with cumin-seeds, there’s another very traditional cheese, Friesian nagel-kaas (nagel is short voor kruidnagel = cloves).
Next time get the warm Grillworst met kaas you stood in fromt at the second stop.
Eat iT warm
Definitely will try it soon. Thank you for watching!
sorry was just so funny in my mind no offense , healthy stuff healthy stuff healthy stuff healthy stuff ... chicken wings !!! hit the breaks ... healthy stuff healthy stuff healthy stuff ... Meat pie full stop ... :D. There are some nice places to go, bataviastad Lelystad, Bazaar Beverwijk, Haarlem is nice, Limburg has a lot of history to see.
Hey, when the homesick cravings hit, you have to give in! Thanks for watching.
Does anything comparable to the Dutch outdoor market exist in the USA?
There are markets in the USA, at least where we lived in Texas. But much less frequent and not nearly the selection and quality of products offered. Thank you for watching!
Ann Arbor, MI has a nice market for instance, but a market is not as common and "normal" as it is in the Netherlands
1 tip on pronounciation. oo and oe are pronounced invertedly from English. So our oe, is your oo, and and our oo is your oe.
How do flower prices compare to the US ??
Flower prices are significantly less expensive here (and better quality, fresher seeming.) A dozen roses in the USA is about $15-$20, and that goes up significantly during holidays like Valentine's day, and Mother's day. Sometime $50 for a bouquet!
TIP: If you have the store bought stroopwafels, use them as a lid for your mug of coffee or tea. It will keep your drink hot, and it heats up the stroopwafel, which makes it taste better. Enjoy!
E: Much better sound quality. Thank you.
Wow what a great tip 🤣
Mind: Blown. Thank you for the tip! Appreciate your continued support!!
And everybody speaks English, only in the Netherlands.
Wait....is it just me or does your wife look like Adele? They could be sisters!
Oh wow, thank you for the kind words. We appreciate you watching!
Nice how you shared your experience on the market. But you won't learn any Dutch everybody spoke English to you.. You will learn pretty sure
We are slowly but surely learning and practicing! Thank you so much for watching!
sorry but what is mac & cheese?
Macaroni cheese
