I was 21 when this was made having lived in Colchester since 1979 (live in Whitstable now). Noticed how the Tesco Highwoods petrol station was actually a Texaco (not Tesco branded). Amazing seeing Highwoods still being developed!
Ahh yep i remember back in the day i done loads of work at highwoods for wimpey homes and beazers loads and loads of fencing turfing all that hairpin along side the road
Cool video. I was only 1 when this was recorded but I have memories of Ipswich Road/Highwoods in the late 80's when my Grandad used to take me there in his Ford Capri 2.8!
Found all 5 vids and their 2012 follow ups absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately you never made it to St John's where I grew up, but I remember working in the High Woods Tesco when I was finishing off my A levels in 1987. Huge amounts of change, but interesting how much stays the same too.
+John C Glad you enjoyed them. Just passed 100,000 views in 138 countries yesterday. It was only a Sunday drive with my new toy originally, never intended for public consumption, just seemed a good idea 3 years ago to put them on RUclips. I would have done the whole town had I known they would be so popular!
Amazing to see the place I was born and remember as a kid! That big Tescos was the one with the huge rotating glass door entrance wasn't it? Sadly we moved away in 1993 but still go back from time to time.
@@TheWurn2I seem to remember my dad used to take me an auction on Saturday mornings someone near that area, would you know of it? They used to sell livestock as well as the usual junk!
I am glad people find these videos interesting I waited ages before I decided to put them on. Its like a prehistoric Google Earth street view!
Fascinating drive around my neighbourhood a year after I was born its amazing what changes and what doesnt
I lov these videos. I'm from Harwich and I was 8 years old in 1986. used to go to tesco highwoods to get toys, and Williams and Griffin... and c &a

"Lots of development around here"
I should know mate my house isn't even there yet!
Nostalgia. I lived in Milend between 1988 - 1994. I've got some fond memories of the area. Thank you for making these videos 👍🏽
Thank you😊
Awesome video. I live seeing the 70's and 80's cars in this.
Amazing videos! Obvious Hythe and Highwoods have totally changed, but the town centre looks identical!
I saw a few Renault 12s in this video. I haven't seen one in the flesh since 1993.

How many Renault 12s there were and Peugeot 405s theyre virtually extinct today. Great videos really enjoyed them.
Wow this video transported me back to 1986 when I was in the back of mums car on the weekly shop to Tesco's, nostalgia is weird.

I used to roam Highwoods at lunchtimes when it was a building site. Cracking stuff

My family moved to Colchester in 1979 and we lived in Glentress Close (Magdalen Wood)...
More evidence at how quickly the whole place had grown.
Only just, the shops not finished but the garage is open! Nice to have those petrol prices now.
Memories... I used to live in the St John's Estate just 2 minutes walk from the Rover's Tye
jeez it looked so different back then this was filmed 10 years before i was born
@TheWurn2 thankyou very much... was very enjoyable to watch :D
Nice to go by Hoofers again..
@andybakerable Must be like having a dream or being stuck in a timewarp! Can you pick my aussie accent? Its warn off now.

I don't think the glass door is there anymore, I don't use that branch.
@@TheWurn2 last time I went there was 1993 and they used to amaze me! How much is you old house worth now or do you still live there?
@@charlieboy259 no that was my parents place. I was on holiday from Australia at the time. I l hve lived in Rowhedge for over 30 years now.
