Driving from Hessle to Hull Paragon Station - 1996

- A film of my then-regular drive from Northgate in Hessle to Hull Paragon Station. Recorded on a Hi-8 camera in 1996.
The route leaves Hessle via Hull Road and Priory Way, along the A63 Clive Sullivan Way and into the city along Rawling Way and Anlaby Road. The final part of the journey into the station is where the city has changed most since. - Авто/Мото
Watching archived 90s footage of casual drives around British cities is my new favourite pastime on RUclips
**Archived** 90s footage. This IS my *reality* of what the cities of the UK look like. In my memory at least. It makes me feel like Rip Van Winkle. 😀😃😄🙂🙃😉😊
I wasn't born when this video was taken but it's so nice to see this area a little differently. I see these streets every day and it's quite strange to see how they've changed and developed over time. Lovely video. Most of all, the cars look so much prettier! :)
Someone in the mid to late 2000s probably thought that everyday cars looked to simple or "boring" until that point, and so decided that making them look weirder and much uglier was the answer, probably as an excuse to "innovate".
As the trend is still continuing, though, I am afraid the average consumer is all for it. :/
I was born around 12 years later
notice the complete absence of huge 4x4s!
08:20
NIssan Patrol, one the largest around!
Yeah too right the large 4x4 that nobody can drive
No police vans with speed trap cams. Either!
2:13
And? Why is this a point you wish to raise?
Awesome video, I can’t be the only one that did a reg check on some of the vehicles in the video to see wether they was still on the road
Northern Dairies instead of Tesco ; and a roundabout by HRI that I'd forgotten about .Great ! Thanks for sharing.
A beautiful ride with beautiful vehicles on the roads.
There where the day's rich
"Beautiful vehicles" 🤔🤔.
Maybe in 1964.
@@gerrywhelan5761 Points of view.
If you grew up or were a teen during the 90s, then you'd probably share their same opinion.
All in all, though, pretty much any car from any era is better than the hideously overstyled and overly-engineered shite that most manufacturers are dishing out today.
Simpler times, overall.
Fabulous footage! When the streets were free-flowing and no bollards, chicanes, bus lanes or cycle lanes. The days when you could drive to where you wanted to be! Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
I'm hessle roader, born n bred, love this old school vid, saved it to watch over, memories of Hull before epic changes, thanks 😊🇬🇧
@Lee Hilton. Shame he didn't go down Hessle Rd instead of turning right on to Clive Sullivan Way. I was 15 in 1961 and worked down Brighton St at Dairycoates Railway depot. Been in Leeds since 1966 thanks to Dr Beeching.
@@johnward374 yes that'd been awesome, miss cholmley St, not same now though 😊👍
Back when people drove small cars for our small UK roads! Now you get idiots with 4x4 taking up all the space! We are getting like America day by day and it’s NOT good!
The first seconds and the sound of reversing! Love it! Hessle hasn't changed much 😂 and I can't remember the roundabout at HRI and my dad used to work at Northern Diaries down Park Street. Thankyou for posting x
Like how that tiny sign at 1:05 just says "Hull"
The number of fiesta's, corsa's, astra's and escorts in this clip makes me feel old :) And a cheeky white montego at rawlings way roundabout :)
Citreon BX,and Fiat Uno's too...the well driven taxi shocked me,you hardly ever see those in Hull nowadays.
The pegeout 405 made my dick hard
Yes the 80s and 90s were very much dominated by fords and vauxhalls, then as the 2000s arrived the german and east asians cars became more popular
@Grassy Ranks Not needed, but they are as acceptable as not putting them; helps differentiate the model of the car from the fact that you are referring to multiple cars of the same model.
I badly need a time machine. Fuck all on Ebay.
Ask Marty McFly.
Excellent video! I passed my test at 17 in 1994 in Hessle! Exactly as I remember it :)
I passed mine here in October 92, I dunno how but I did, the little rat runs he used to make me go down had me in a cold sweat 😄😬
Notice how much less traffic is on the roads and how nicer and cleaner hull looked bk then
Oh plz bring bk the old bus station
I was working on Priory Park West at this time and living in Hull, so the number of times I did that route myself is phenomenal.
I even did the countdown over the St Andrews flyover and it worked.
Just think virtually every car in this video has now been scrapped...I passed my driving test in Hessle too in 1984...
Interesting stuff, amazing 20 years has passed. I was 12 at this point lol.
I vaguely remember the old Dale Farm building on Park Road, which is now the entryway (roughly) to the Tesco car park.
Wow 1996, the year of the new N and P reg cars, good to see lots of ford sierras and cavaliers on the road, still many cars from the 1980s plus this was the period just before the domination of german cars, oh and No bloody SUVs everywhere
Ever see a video and think 'wow I'm not sure why this exists but I'm very glad it does'
I wasn't even born when this video was filmed, and now I've been driving for almost 5 years.
I've lived in Hull for all my life - couldn't believe I forgot there was a roundabout at Hull Royal
9:23 - I *do* remember the joint Stagecoach/East Yorkshire Leeds service as it was strange to see a Stagecoach bus in the EY depot
So this disgusting, vile company stagecoach has been around this long? Was it always so bad with busses cancelled and 30 minute wait times for a bus that is supposed to be every 10 minutes?
That roundabout is so ingrained in my mind I'd forgotten there isn't one anymore until i saw it here oddly!
Flippin-eck been a few changes since then. Great to see this video. 👍
Thanks , notice a glimpse of the providence pub which was demolished 🤗
I remember the cobblestone square near the Northern Dairies offices.
The Victorian pub on the corner was called the 'Providence Inn' I think, but I could be wrong.
The original Hull Truck Theatre and the mortuary was also on the same street.
The area behind the old bus station as far as Park Street and Spring Bank was completely different to how it looks now.
It was the Providence. I’d got it wrong in my comment. Was thinking of Good Fellowship. It was St Stephen’s Square.
Most things look more or less the same, yet somehow much cleaner.
I was 5 years old during the recording of this video and man 26 years later hull has changed both for better and for worse
I left Hull in 2007 and have only ever been back for visits but am contemplating moving back there to be closer to family and friends. I'm curious as to how you think it's changed for the worse? From an outsiders perspective, it looks like it's gotten a lot better!
I left Hull in 1969 - (for Australia).
I have been back a few times since and I cannot believe that although they have done slum clearance and, in some cases built the new streets at about 90 deg. to the old streets, they have not provided off street parking, making the streets seem even narrower that they should be.
Left in '73 for Oz. Still here but get to the UK occasionally. Always make a beeline for Hull and stay with old friends in Thorngumbald. Can't believe how narrow and congested the streets are, and awful roads. Last time we were there in 2018, we found a parking spot in the multistory on Lowgate next to King Billy statue. 3 feet wide parking spots don't do it for me. We had to get out of our tiny Citroën and push it into the spot.
Once out into the country it's a different story. Our little open top car was delightful on summer evenings out in the sticks. We loved it. Always somewhere to go for dinner, Beverley, or Hornsea or Brid for a fish and chip supper. We're well retired now. Could I go back and live in the UK? Not sure. The wife wouldn't but I might be tempted...
@@logotrikes I live in hull now and let me
tell you first hand, if you want to park near white friargate on a night, good fkin luck!
It’s not as bad on lowgate because of the Tesco car park but if you want anything past Albany flyover you don’t stand a chance on a match day.
Awesome video. Bit of nostalgia for a Sunday morning.
This is how I remember British cities. This is what Hull looked like more or less when I was there last ( about 2000). I really don't want to go back either.
Now +30% more cars on the road since 1996.
Ahhh, not an SUV in sight...
1996 I had just moved house again and finished college I miss those days happy times
Oh wow, the year I was born. It's pretty cool; some stuff has changed but I'm surprised how much I recognised. I'm assuming it got changed for a reason but in theory I prefer the idea of a roundabout at Hull Royal. If you catch the lights there these days you're sat there for ages, which is even worse if traffic's nasty. Good old Paragon car park though. My dad used to park there for work; I have fond memories of walking through with him and my grandad whenever I'd visit his shop on the weekend or a holiday. The dark red Ford Sierra on the left with the spoiler at 12:20 might even have been his since that's what he used to own.
Since I live in Hessle, and only 18, I'm interested by this video
This is very rare and very good
4:45 - No Trees!
Was looking out for my dad.. he was the milkman for hessle centre for over 20 years
Great video , I worked at Dixon Citroen on the service desk down Clarence street during this time , spent a lot of time picking up and delivering customers cars after service or repairs , often wonder if I’m driving any of the cars that pass by
Was 18 back then, looks nice, sadly all changed now and not for the better.
waw....that is Priceless!!
Thankd for sharing oh beautiful soul!!
So nice to drive on humpfree roads!
9:40 nice old Volvo, probably still on the road 😍
The old V70. But I was glad to get reminded of Austin Montego...
Great video!
I got a bit nostalgic seeing a glimpse of the UCI movie board there. Great upload.
I'd completely forgotten there was ever a cinema there.
Good. Nice camera work.
I don't know why you filmed it at the time, but I am glad you did nice to see how it was
Damn, i didnt even exist when this was filmed
This is wonderful
Dam I wish it was still 1996!
Yeah me to Britain changed to much.
Me too! I was only 18!
Me too😭
I was one year old when this was recorded.
now i am 26.
Nice to see St Stephen’s Square again. Was it the Good Fellowship pub there? Used to do folk nights on a Tuesday.
looking up the reg of every car I could make out, seems most only lasted about 10 years or so. Wonder if any of these are still about
It all looks so terribly old fashioned, and yet I was there for a year in 1998 when it looked just like this! In that era the streetscape was much less "busy". Less signage, advertising etc. Everything was just "quieter" and calmer than in the 21st Century. I hesitate to say better...
Surprised me how old all the cars look, funny tricks the memory plays.
When we had a thing called freedom
back at 89/90 i'm stayed at beverley road, albert ave, vermouth street, follows my dad continuing his studies at Uni Of Hull..anyway spotted mr.bean cousin 3:25 LoL
I was born here 2010 and in 1996 that's how it looked like in Hull
back when you could hear the engine and gearbox.
Thanks for the video. I was thinking that for 24 years there is relatively small change. Other than UCI there is really no change until you hit Park Street, pre St stephens development.
better drivers than today
So weird to think this was filmed 5 years before i was born, a whole world just sitting there everyone going about their day and i dont exist. weird feeling lol.
how so many things have changed in such a short period of time
cars used to look so good back then
superb
Big fan of these vids well done for filming this. Makes me want to do the same for others benefit in 20 years time !
trouble is most people have dashcams nowadays so videos will be everywhere in 20 years time
@@ChewyChops Exactly.
Unfortunately I'm afraid that filming stuff now for later reference will no longer have as much as value in the future as it did when filmed in the 90s/early 2000s and seen today. Not to say that you cannot still do it, it's just that unless you are filming something very special or niche, nobody will probably pay too much attention to it later on.
The car engine sounds like a Citroen AX car I owned mid 90’s
There seems to be a total lack of bad driving in this video. Oh, wait a minute, this was 1996 😀
Beleive me there has always been bad driving.
the truck parked on double yellows at 8:30 is a bit of a nonce... unless they had broken down
@@SmokeyBCN do you know what nonce means?
Mad thing is, it's barely changed in nearly 20 years!!
Take me back there please
Anyone called the number off the ASTRA van see who answers!?
Hessle hasn't changed much.
Notice how the sign to Hull at 1:05 is so small and close to the ground, almost hidden from sight. Even the councils dont want people finding their way there.
Caerphilly reminds me of Hessle in how its laid out!
You could do the exact same route today if your still on here 👍 see how much it's changed and not for the better 😂
Good idea - I haven't been back to Hull for a while, but could certainly repeat when I am.
A lot of Sierras in hull back then !
What month was this?
Ah the days when you could get your foot down on clive sully way Now its littered with average speed cameras with a 40 limit 😤😤
Don't worry it's back now 😂 oh wait... the 40 limit is between South Cave and Newport now 😔
I was 5 at the time. :D
@lilmiss fatn3ss What the hell are you on about?! :-/
Just before canning st & bus station was Green Baize snooker club where I played. Before that in mid 80's it was Blisters roller disco
What camera did you film this with? Dash cams weren't even a thing back then?
What was the pub called again? Was it providence or was that on the other side?
Do you mean the one near the Northern Dairies offices?
I think that you are right and It was called the'Providence Inn'.
Lots of Ford's on the roads back then. They were a dominant force on British roads at that time. Todays obsession with SUV's and "premium" German brands is a bit of a yawn😴
Just like all the Fords that were mediocre back then. Those fords back then are what made them completely change and build the Focus. Vauxhall made the Vectra soon after this.....
I find the Ford cars are designed for men myself!
A brief glimpse of The Lord Line Buiding there
This is just like the beginning of the movie "Duel" minus the menacing truck driver!
Nice to see St Stephen's Square as it's now sleeping undeneath St Stephen's Shopping centre
Strange how all videos from 90s look similar the old days must have been different to see in person
Lot less traffic on the roads, plus decent courtesy when cars just pull out in front-now there’d be beeping horns, road rage & giving you the fingers 😮
big mistake taking that roundabout from anlaby road.. traffic lights slow everything down
@lilmiss fatn3ss who are you talking about?
Many things to note in this video
1. Wow Sainsbury's is missing from Priory Way it looks weird seeing all that greenery and no traffic light for the turnoff into Sainsbury Way
2. HRI Junction was a roundabout, wow!
3. Missing Tesco's which use to be Dale Farm
4. Margaret Moxon Way used to be a few narrow roads like Canning St etc. definitely very different now!
Oh yeah no Smith and Nephews! That AMI Food Store place near English St seems to still be there today though haha
Sainsbury's (and Homebase) were there then - behind the trees. Everything else has changed though!
the roundabout nr HRI was miles better for traffic flow.. IMO
@@retro_streets oh wow I didn't know ! i guess it just looked so empty without the traffic light that's there now and it being much further back, now there's a petrol station easily on display near the front !
Smith and Nephews was certainly existing in 1996, I had a temporary job there over the Christmas period of 1996!
Also Sainsbury's... it was built in the early 80's. Including Homebase and the petrol station.
My question is,
Did they get the train on time? 😬
There was a couple of serious car thief’s around in 96 especially from west hull … shame you never went through the ville ..
Oh times changed big time haha.
9:02 A YUGO?! WTF?! 😳😳😳
0:00 to 6:30 This is almost my exact route to work.
To take up a roundabout and replace it with traffic lights ( as was done at the junction between Rowlings Way and Anlaby Road ) is insanity.
And look how easy that was with no pointless traffic lights bike lanes and road works , never mind 12 minutes it would take you over an hour to do that run in 2022
Can I use this footage?
You have some interesting work on your own channel, so I don't see why not :-)
@@retro_streets thanks a lot!
Green Nissan primera on the right at 12:02
My Hull my is a life hull
Hardly any smack heads then
So weird, the world the year I was born. Look at all those teeny weeny tin cars just zipping around mad!
Yugo at 09:13 !
That's actually a Seat Ibiza MkI 😅
But there is a Yugo at 9:02, right behind the Green Rover 🙂
