- Recently, Opie challenged people to name anything funnier than his podcast, trash talked the Jim & Sam / Anthony shows, called Jim a dry drnk and Anthony an alchy, and even claimed they didn’t work hard or do show prep like he does for his weekly cell phone restaurant podacast. It made the Reddit community turn into a parallel universe where everyone praised Opie and pointed out how his habits added value to the O&A show. After a few days off, Jim Norton and Sam Roberts are back to address the Opie controversy head on! Also Rich Vos vs Opie and Anthony made a video about him.

I’ve just never understood why Opie never embraced being made fun of or understood his role on the show. Like you can’t be mad your buddies are teasing each other and excluding you when every time they take a jab at you you go “hey hey hey, easy! That was a cheap shot.” At some point people stopped including Opie and he began to resent them for not including him.

Remember when they were teasing that author Amy Sutherland(or Sunderland maybe?) over the phone, her book was about training a husband like you'd train a whale or dolphin, positive reinforcement etc.
The guys were lightly hinting at her appearance, then Opie just screamed & said he just saw a picture of Amy.. She immediately hangs, killing the entire bit.
..Everyone went dead silent, Patrice included, as Opie laughed by himself, looking around the room, seeing nothing but disappointed faces. I think this example matches what you were saying👍👍
That cheap arrogance, insulting everyone around him, but poorly. Acted like some pretend Alpha, that only acted tough when there was no real Alpha around. He was painfully insecure, so people would just let him get away with it for the sake of the show.
..Then he'd wonder why phrases like "Leave it alone" wouldn't work when people had a real problem with him.. So later on, he tried to trade in the people he couldn't control, for weaker people that he could, show quality be damned🙈

None of you understand the O&A show. Opie invented the show. He created the structure of the show. It was his idea to make it fun and crazy with two guys and no girls. Opie build an interesting and compelling show. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of funny guys Opie could have had the same level of success with because he knows how to do radio. Lots of guys can toss out a funny line. Very few know how to do radio. Why do you think Jim and Ants shows are struggling so badly? They're radio guys who don't know how to do radio.

You're so dumb. The reason Opie decided to go with another guy rather than a more traditional male/female lineup is because he didn't want the show to have a hole. "Hey, we need to break now" and "Hey, we need to move on, we have a guest..." doesn't make you a hole. It makes you a professional.

I'm so happy they can finally be honest about this. I listened daily for years and it drove me insane that they never acknowledged how much Opie sucked. It sucks that it took the show falling apart for the truth to come out. Funniest show of all time, in spite of Gregg Hughes.
I have been a listener since 2010 I was OBSESSED with O&A in highschool. The second Ant got fired and Opie started spouting off about it all I could think was "ehh, watch your ass dude" and of course opie was also fired within a year of that. The details about how Roland was CRYING and telling opie he didn't want him to post the photo of Roland on the toilet, and the fact Roland had to take it to the bosses because he KNEW opie would post it on twitter. And then Opie DID post it on twitter..... He sealed his own fate. Besides what he did being illegal in all 50 states it was just bullying of Roland Campos and WHO THE FUCK WOULD BULLY ROLAND?! Opie is a sour asshole.

The practical reality was Opie didn’t actually suck. His role just wasn’t what he wanted and it passed him off. Gregg was the audience. He was a player coach who produced from a seat in the game. He knew when to change the shows direction because the audience was starting to wander, to bring their attention back. He’d get jealous of those who actually were the talent and use that same angle of attack to stall a bit that still had legs.
If he could have been happy with his role O&A would still be a thing, but he couldn’t. He wanted to be “the guy”. The actor on the screen instead of a director behind it. He wasn’t particularly entertaining. His talent was knowing where the audience was because he was part of it. When he became unfocused on that because his jealousy had him trying to, frequently awkwardly, to insert himself into the exchanges he lost what he contributed to the show; an audience member with fingers on the buttons to direct the show to the audience’s benefit, making the show better.
@Paul Harney Opie was always the man. If you don't understand that you never understand the show. Opie created the show and made it what it was. He planned ever bit, every event, every stunt. Ant was along for the ride. Ants only job was to show up and try to say something funny in the moment.
i love norton more than i ever have, simply for honestly saying he enjoys making fun of opie. it doesn't get any better than that.

Aside from the comedy the crazy honesty, of Norton particularly, was the best thing about it. Opie was not only the least funny but biggest bullshitter. You are spot on.

The genius move for Opie would have been to lean into the whole straight man ship steerer role. If he would have openly gave props to how funny the other guys were and did a little self deprivation saying how it's rough being in that room not on that level I think fans would have had the opposite reaction and actually defended him. Opie did have some funny lines from time to time and when he did have one they would have all rallied behind him. By being obviously jealous and sour grapes people are going to just brutally go after you.
Yep. I've been saying this for years. And actually, in the early days, specifically WNEW, Opie seemed to realize this and he took on that role and it seemed to work out alright. Then once they moved over to XM is when he seemed to get bitter, jealous, and resentful because he always felt left out. He did it to himself.
