If you've never seen that, he's a character Steve Coogan played who was a radio disc jockey and a totally unfunny, cringe inducing, embarrassing buffoon. One of the things Partridge would do is if someone told a really genuinely funny joke, instead of laughing at it like everyone else in the room Partridge would immediately give a short little 'review' of the joke and comment on how funny it was and why. Opie actually does this. When he can't take credit for a joke he does a 'rapid review' of it. It's fucking nauseating.

When Opie tells Jimmy live on air that they have chemistry, I wanted to die for a second. If you have chemistry with somebody, you would never mention how much chemistry you have. EWW!
Especially when they DON'T have any chemistry at all. Jim hated Opie and didn't respect him personally, and certainly not comedically. The show was funny in SPITE of Opie and he loved to take credit like he was part of the hilarity. He even sold shirts and mugs of his "catchphrases" which weren't even catchphrases at all, since they never caught on and got no response when he said them on the air, but he was so delusional he thought they were funny enough to put on a shirt.
He knew everyone in the building hated him. At least the ones who knew who he was. He was desperately trying to give the management the impression that he was at least getting along with the people he worked with every day. They didn't fall for it. ZERO surprise they gave him the ol' shitcanning for a bizarre out-of-left-field reason. Not a single person wanted him there. Also ZERO surprise at the joke of a "line up" he assembled for his big "comeback" in entertainment. Or that it didn't take long for them to all turn on him too when they realized no listeners = no money.
The character chip is based on a Jerky Boys skit and slowly morphed into Opie over the years when chip got his own podcast and realized copying Opie is perfect for those screeching-halt-to-the-comedy moments.
If you go back and read the comments, fans on reddit/wackbag/youtube have been pointing this shit out for years. It's great to finally have it confirmed.
He spun records on the graveyard shift until Anthony fell into his lap and was willing to carry the show for him. 25 years later he still thinks he has talent. We all see how well he's doing without Anthony and Jim.
This answers something that always bugged me. In the Maxwell saga, when they found Benjamin on camera eating a booger, Opie's response was "Everybody eats a booger now and then, but this guy looks like he's really enjoying it." And no one on the show responded to what he just said at all. Being a person who never ate a booger, I thought "Is that really a thing most people do?" Now I know, Opie is just weird.
He had nothing. There was nothing people were saying behind Ant's back that Ant would have given a FUCK about at all if Opie just said it, so he kept saying "leave it alone" trying to bluff like he had the atomic bomb. Passive aggressive shit like that is why not a single person who ever worked for that show likes Opie or is willing to ever work with him again, so he has to pay Vic Henley and Sherrod Small to fake-laugh on his solo show.

I never understood the Opie hate when I first found O n A a couple years ago, but fuck me all the anti opie comments made sense and realized it wasnt just a troll fest.
I started listening in 98. Stopped around 2008. Met the guys a bunch of times. Went to events. Was in studio for 55 gallon drum challenge II. Hearing the fight about grapes and yogurt happen live was like Anthony seeing the bowl of pasta his dad threw at his mom shattering on the wall and sliding to the floor

Words can not describe how much I hate Opie. I'm 57 years old, I've been listening to radio for as long as I can remember, I have never heard anyone on the radio, that has to yell, hold on, hold on, hold on, just to try and get a thought out. Even others on the show know Opie has nothing to say.

I also grew up with a mother who had borderline personality disorder and I can empathize, that's some rough and maddening shit. I can also spot some of the signs in Dopie -- the narcissism, the ridiculous over-sensitivity, and especially the attitude of all or nothing with people. Especially when they DON'T have any chemistry at all. Jim hated Opie and didn't respect him personally, and certainly not comedically. The show was funny in SPITE of Opie and he loved to take credit like he was part of the hilarity. He even sold shirts and mugs of his "catchphrases" which weren't even catchphrases at all, since they never caught on and got no response when he said them on the air, but he was so delusional he thought they were funny enough to put on a shirt.

In the Maxwell saga, when they found Benjamin on camera eating a booger, Opie's response was "Everybody eats a booger now and then, but this guy looks like he's really enjoying it." And no one on the show responded to what he just said at all. Being a person who never ate a booger, I thought "Is that really a thing most people do?" Now I know, Opie is just weird.
