No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. You can tie your behind to a piano and it will prove futile because Sohyang's performance will literally suck you into the emotion and power she exudes, piano and all! She is the most magical singer I have come across in my entire six and one half decades on this planet. Sohyang is a once in a lifetime singer. The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to _really_ pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message. Other than this one performance, we know of only two other times Sohyang has performed this rendition of "You Raise Me Up," both in 2018. When she changes key there a couple of times near the end of the song and belts those high notes so powerfully, you expect her to actually lift off the stage and go into orbit! Yes, Sohyang is famous for throwing in everything and leaving it all on the stage--including the kitchen sink! It is so refreshing to see reactors who actually take time to do some research which makes the reaction so much more interesting. So Hyang did become "more than I can be" for this performance doing a brilliant job under the circumstances. I can imagine that she was quite apprehensive as to whether she could go the distance as she started but, about half way through, she smiled and bounced as she now believed she could finish, which she did magnificently! Fortunately, So Hyang and her doctors seem to have her health under control as she is now better than ever. Again, thanks and carry on!

She was still recovering from her latest bout with severe pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, around this time, she was experiencing vocal cord issues. She thought her singing career was over and wanted to sing one last time. Afterward, she disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020. So Hyang continues to prove that her vocal technique is rock solid. In 2024, not only is she aging in reverse, but she sounds better than ever before, if that's even possible.

There may be better singers out there than Sohyang. But there are none that convey the emotion or story behind a song like her. She is absolutely superb.
Yes she was not her best healthwise & anyone familiar with sohyang can probably see that she looks a little pale & like she’s lost weight from her face. It is wrong to say that she was suffering actively with pneumonia because when the illness was in full flow she was confined to bed but she was in recovery from the latest bout & she was indeed advised by the doctor not to sing. I have followed Sohyang for quite a few years now & she is my favourite vocalist but in my opinion, although this performance is amazing by anyone’s standards, I feel that this isn’t as good as her other performances. I feel that she had a couple of probs with her breath control, which is understandable in the circumstances, & I just feel that a bit of the sohyang magic was missing, some of her notes weren’t as pristine as they usually are but I am been very very very picky here because I am so used to Sohyang’s perfect vocals & as I said, this is still an amazing performance & I don’t think anyone who isn’t very familiar with everything Sohyang has to offer would even notice anything was amiss & think anything other than that it was perfect. Tbh when I first heard this I wasn’t as far in to my Sohyang journey as I am now obviously & at the time I thought this performance was perfect, but the more & more I listened to her, the more I saw the things that led me to how I feel about this performance today. Guys, superlatives? Yes. I am pleased that you were aware of her pneumonia problem because it gives an insight to this spectacular performance that is a tribute to her beautiful spirit. Her voice was less than normal, but it was her spirit that delivered this iconic performance. Unwilling to break a commitment to her fans, the great lady took the stage. I think it is not at all melodramatic to say that. In my opinion, music experts tend to listen to studio recordings for the technical aspects and evaluate performers from that. It is an absolute truth that one must see Sohyang perform live to understand the musicianship, but much more than that, her ability to deliver the message on a level that is totally enthralling. Even through her flickering image on a little Computer Monitor, she reaches out over the time and the distance to touch you. He contacted the Korean Embassy to get in touch with Sohyang, and they provided him with Sohyang's contact information. He wanted to give her his new song, and she was honored and agreed to collaborate. This episode is from three years ago, and by the time of this story, “You raise me up” had been remade more than 165,000 times, with Sohyang's version being the one chosen by the original songwriter. Just to point out what someone said few years back, they said you can tell her face looked unwell and if you look at her tongue it was white which is a sign of illness. She sings sick quite often. She is a fighter and a trooper.

Speaking of Enya, her sister Máire Ní Bhraonáin, better known as Máire (pronounced "Moya") Brennan is also a CCM singer (She goes by "Moya" as a stage name now, probably because many of her fans are on the American side of the Atlantic). Keep up the good work guys. There is only one thing almost as good as hearing a new sohyang performance for the first time & that is watching other people watching for the first time.
Believe it or not, there are many sohyang haters online, I haven’t a clue why because she doesn’t deserve it, I think jealousy is probably at the core, but the more & more people like yourselves, musicians,people who actually know what they’re talking about when it come to music, do these videos & point out that she is in fact beyond amazing & ‘no’ she doesn’t just scream etc, then the sooner, I hope, that these idiots realise that no one believes what they are saying & hopefully get bored & disappear.
I am sorry for my little rant but I feel so protective of Sohyang because she is just the purest, most beautiful, strong, humble human being & the last person that you could ever want to hurt etc with yr negative comments because she doesn’t deserve it.

Guys, superlatives? Yes. I am pleased that you were aware of her pneumonia problem because it gives an insight to this spectacular performance that is a tribute to her beautiful spirit. Her voice was less than normal, but it was her spirit that delivered this iconic performance. Unwilling to break a commitment to her fans, the great lady took the stage. I think it is not at all melodramatic to say that. In my opinion, music experts tend to listen to studio recordings for the technical aspects and evaluate performers from that. It is an absolute truth that one must see Sohyang perform live to understand the musicianship, but much more than that, her ability to deliver the message on a level that is totally enthralling. Even through her flickering image on a little Computer Monitor, she reaches out over the time and the distance to touch you. If one hasn't felt that yet, one needs only to resist talking and just watch. Thanks for your series on Sohyang. Keep going, she has much more.

Brendan Graham, the original songwriter of “You Raise Me Up,” heard Sohyang's cover version of this video on RUclips. He contacted the Korean Embassy to get in touch with Sohyang, and they provided him with Sohyang's contact information. He wanted to give her his new song, and she was honored and agreed to collaborate. This episode is from three years ago, and by the time of this story, “You raise me up” had been remade more than 165,000 times, with Sohyang's version being the one chosen by the original songwriter. Sohyang's new album is coming out in October, and I hope that the song he gave her song.

Just to point out what someone said few years back, they said you can tell her face looked unwell and if you look at her tongue it was white which is a sign of illness. She sings sick quite often. She is a fighter and a trooper.

지금까지 소향님의 'You Raise Me Up'을 리액션한 수많은 사람들이 있었는데 저 경연 당시 직접 참가하였던 Westlife의 Shane Filan을 한눈에 알아 보는 뮤지션은 거의 없었던 것으로 기억합니다. 대부분은 오 왠 서양인이 저 자리에 앉아 있는가? 하는 정도의 무관심으로 지나곤 했죠 ... 그런 점에서 볼 때 이분들은 정말 상당히 많은 경험과 실력을 가지신 분들이라 할 수 있겠네요 ... 비록 실제 공연이 한참 옛날에 진행된 부분이라 그것이 아쉽기는 하지만 그래도 이런 전문가분들이 소향님을 알아 주고 높이 평가해 준다는 점에서 그런 것쯤은 문제가 아니라고 생각합니다. 이제 신곡도 나왔으니 더 많은 사람들이 소향님을 알게 되고 리렉션하고 사랑하여 더욱 큰 사랑을 받게 되기를 바라봅니다 ㅎㅎ

Speaking of Enya, her sister Máire Ní Bhraonáin, better known as Máire (pronounced "Moya") Brennan is also a CCM singer (She goes by "Moya" as a stage name now, probably because many of her fans are on the American side of the Atlantic). Both used to be in the band Clannad together. You should check out some of Moya Brennan's albums. She recorded a song titled 'Song Of David (Psalm 67)' in Gaelic; and she recorded it with a children's choir. It is transcendent, ethereal, and so inspiring. You can hear it here:
