What a great video: thanks, Hannah, for being generous enough to share so much information about the different aspects of your practice and for being so honest about the sheer slog involved in being a pro! Really enjoyed watching your location set up with the Quadra and Rotalux: is your camera bag otherwise known as the "Tardis"?! Lovely video production too: thanks Wex.

Thank you Simon, I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I will always be honest about what's really involved in running the business as it's not always the fun we hope it will be but needs to be done! You are right, I do feel a bit like Mary Poppins with my bag at times on location - seems to blow client's minds when they see it all fold down into one bag! Thank you for your kind words. Hannah

Hannah, WOW! I'm speechless and despite this video is just over 5.5 years old, I'm happy thrilled to have come across it. It is very informative and well done! But ther's a number of points I must point out. First was the family protrait shoot with Vickie. I so loved how you showed doing whatever it takes to get an amazing shot and expression! I'm a fashion photog on the east coast of the U.S. and so so many U.S. photogs believe you have to have these dull, boring perfectly posed and constructed shots. With my fashion yeah I get the general post but then do like you and maybe use a nosie maker or squirt gun to surprise the model or client and like you, you get one of akind genuine expressions as well as awesome shots!
Withe the corportate head shot of Gary and his team, here is another awesome and amazing point. After shooting them you resized and sent them a link to let THEM pick their best 3 images. Awesome! Here in the U.S. you will find most do not allow this and the photog has to do the culling. Like you, regardless if I'm shooting our fashion, or whatever, I always allow my clients to see the whole set. They realize that not every shot will be in focus or perfect, and that is where you educate them I was blown away to see when you got back to the studion Gary had made HIS picks and they were waiting on you. Likewise I have similar results. I always have my picks, and interestingly enough, sometimes the client and I have similar picks, and other times we are worlds apart. But this has allowed to gorow far better than most as the client feel more involved and there is a better value. Also, it save me time going through and picking out images. I also love the honesty with the shot of Gary and while you felt it may not be the best, you improved it with the removal of the red tv light and removal of the chair behind him. It's a great shot from what I could see so major kudos there as well!
I so have to mention and give you major kudos for being real with the business end of your business. 20 yrs. ago I after buying a failed swimwear business that 2 shady photogs bankrupted, I was forced into photography, to shoot my own products and fashions due to these con-artist criminals. Here in the U.S. most every State required some sort of business setup, licensing and/or registration, even it is on the city level for paying taxes. The problem is that 85% of the fellow photogs who inquire, I deal with or look up for others like models, on some level they are violating the law! Operating without a license which is called a Deceptive Business Practice, not paying taxes which is tax evasion, over charging, adding creative fees, and our wedding and commercial photogs are by far the worst! Again 85% to 90% are violating a host of state or federal laws or both. Typically they use U.S. copyright law to further exploit models and clients which is sad! So, that is how I was forced into it. Those two guys were reported to authorites and long story short, they end up in prison for 3 yrs each. In 20 yrs. I have reported some 4600 and put them out of business. It doesn't help when we have an easy coast copyright attorney and wanna-be photog in my view promoting bias to photogs and prejudice to clients, which she fails miserably to educate photogs on the business side and legal ramifications. Because of it, I'm in law school and when I get my license I will go after those shady photogs as we need more like you!!! So many let their customer service slack. I know wedding photogs who charge an arm and a leg for wedding shoots and clients are waiting 4-6 months to get their wedding images! Many females will wait 30 days as they say they get anxious or overwhelmed... girl emotions and yet days later they are taking on another wedding event. You can find this on Reddit, the subgroup of wedding photography. Then they wonder why they can't make a go of it!
That is the thing, most do not want to do or know how to handle the business end. You did an amazing job be honest and real about it. Thank you!!!
I also love how you do you viewings with a big fluffy comfy love seat and a big screen for the client to see their images. Amazing shots Hannah and you could see the expression of your client's face that she was super happy!
You also did an excellent job at the end delivering the images to the client. I hope it all wasn't staged for the video, with is exceptional, but being personal, like a friend, sipping a cup of tea, holding the baby, all of those little things is what makes a business excellent and stands out. I remember back about almost 10 years now, we did a custom fitness compettion suit for a female bodybuilder cleint. Normally this takes 4-6 weeks, but we can do rush orders if needed. We get their measurments, send the client the suit to "fit" and if it needs altered, they send it back. Well, we had a screw up and she had a competition in Las Vegas. We redid the suit and while I could ahve overnighted the suit to her hotel, I booked a flight and it worked out that when she called in panic mode, I was outside of her room to hand deliver her suit. I also took everything I needed in case we need to make an adjustment. She was in such shock and had tear of joy! But it didn't end there. I told her no charge do toy our screw up! I could have left, but I stayed to watch her compete, which she won her class. I even picked up more business both oreders as well as booked a few more shoots with other fitness models. Talk about tears of joy! I got to hang out with her afterward before leaving the next day. Like you, such it was exhausting, but it was going that extra mile that paid off greatly. She sent me so many referals as well as business for photo shoots and our fitness wear and competition suits.
Sorry for the short novel, but it is so so refreshing to see a fellow photog who is doing it right, who is open and honest with the business aspects and just doing anamzing job! I have save your video to my favorites and I will definitely giving links to our crummy U.S. photogs who complain and give excuses why they are not making it. I sincerely hope you are doing well and in the past 5 years you have grown and gotten even more successful! Major, major kudos to you Hannah!!!
