My Korean teacher once told me the difference is the tongue placement as well as "where the sound is originating from" Much like in singing there is a different placement for your tongue. In the west, we use a lot of our throat to speak and not our chest. Try to get out of speaking from the throat or head voice. In the case of (니은, nieun) I believe it is top of the mouth and not behind your teeth at least that's how I remember it. So it sounds like 'na' and not 'nah'.

One thing that would be helpful to know is tongue placement when saying the consonants. I am hearing impaired, and my specific hearing loss is related to high frequencies. In the speaking world, that means it is challenging to hear the differences between consonants… words like ate, ache and ape sound the same to me. I read lips, which is very helpful! And with that, some consonants like d and t not only sound similar, but appear similar when reading lips.
But when I pay attention to what my tongue actually does when saying those letters, there is a notable difference: t’s depend more on the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth; d’s depend more on the end of the tongue being a bit flatter where it touches the roof of the mouth.
Adding info about what is happening with your mouth with the sounds that are a tiny bit different (and very important to correct pronunciation) than what one may say in English would be helpful to everyone probably. An idea for future lessons!

To me the "Ta" sounds like a "Pa." Just like you did with "la/ra" aound. It would've been perfect if you could add the tongue positions of these sounds and compare them with the tongue and lip positions of the english sounds. You could make a separate small series and I believe it would only take maybe 2 or 3 at the most to get all the difficult sounds.

As some one who knows somewhat of how korean sounds are made (no other way I can phrase that...) constants and vowels like ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅂ, ㄱ, ㅈ. (more but are explaining different) are what are called voiceless. Meaning there is no breathe (or air) when saying them as it all comes from the vocal cords. Generally initial constants, especially those at the start of phrases or sentences are unvoiced. Let me know if I’m wrong!

      Just like Bangla.

    • @monikaz8739
      @monikaz8739 3 года назад

You got the explenation of voiceless the other way around. Voiceless = there's only air, sounds a bit like whisper (in English "k" in key, also f, s, t...), voiced = both breathing and vocal chords involved so the sound resonates (in English "g" in "goat", also v, z, d...). Now I'm confused if initial consonants in Korean are in fact unvoiced or not.

I have a big problem when I learned hangul. It was really hard for me to use the left right up down stroke order...as I am left handed the right left up down order was much quicker for me and I can write faster with that. I hope that is okay as when I try to make it right I slow down much more sadly. Also thanks for making this series.

For the longest time I just thought that I was bad at learning, because the course I was taking used romanization. While I found it fairly easy to pronounce the hangul characters as they came, I just could never match them with the romanizations that the course provided. I just got stuck in the first few chapters, never proceeding to anything "fun". After trying an audio only course, it went so much smoother and I had so much fun with it.

It's quite easy for me to learn as in hindi the sentence structure is the same as korean and every sound of hangul has a character in hindi
    For example
    다 has था
Na has ना which actually is a word with means no

When writing I noticed the consonant alone is more square but when paired with a vowel is curvy. Is that something to also focus on and learn or it's just font related?

    • @elenaolvera8297

Regardless of the font (fancier, simpler, etc.) the consonants will always change like that when paired with a vowel.

@@kathycarela6997 Yep! It has to do with fitting the letters correctly into the syllabic block; (for example, 그 vs 기) so each block takes up the same amount of space (more horizontal vs. a little more vertical and stretched out).

I should clarify^^ I meant when paired with a vertical vowel like ㅏ or ㅐ, etc. With a horizontally oriented vowel like ㅛ, they'll have that boxier shape.
