Did the Carolina Panthers draft the wrong QB with Bryce Young, or should they have taken CJ Stroud?

- Carolina Panthers rookie QB Bryce Young had one of his worst games in his career, throwing 3 interceptions - including two pick-6's - as the Panthers lose to the Indianapolis Colts, 27-13, at Bank of America Stadium. The question many Panthers fans have right now: Did the Carolina Panthers make the right choice by drafting Bryce Young No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, or should they have drafted Houston Texans QB CJ Stroud?

The pain will really set in when the Panthers finish last and the Bears are picking 1st.
😂😂
They knew 😉
They'll have the first and second overall picks. 😑
Cardinals have entered the chat lol
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Yes they did make a mistake and Houston loves Carolina for that mistake. Thank you David Tepper
LMAO!
You took the words right out my mouth. Nobody knew anybody on the Texans until CJ came. When we played them I was amazed by how fast Tank Dell was!! I never knew the guy until we played them. CJ makes he teammates better
I believe Stroud and Dell connected while attending a few pre draft camps. I read that Stroud spoke to Houston about drafting Dell,
As a texans fan during the rebuild with QB Davis Mills… Nico was legit, just never had a QB.
@@lumineer_3if we sign Higgins or Evans in the season along with signing some defensive studs and drafting another receiver our offense could propel even higher
Dameon Pierce is a notable mention.
Tank a Rookie ofcourse no one know who he was
Did the Panthers make a mistake? Of course they did.
How could he have watched Stroud against Georgia and not pick him first?
Houston fans are thrilled CJ dropped in our laps after 8 games. Remember when everyone said Carolina had a more talented team than Houston during the draft? Now what are they saying. Tepper is like the old Oilers Owner Bud Adams. Always meddling. Thank god Tepper had the final say with the first pick
They forgot that
They are supposed to be a playoff team. Because, the division was up in the air.
A little different situation, though. At least the Oilers could field competitive teams.
Yeah bro the only people that didn't forget that is Houston 😂. We remembered all that shit they were talking about our team. Supposedly Bryce was the far superior QB and CJ is already a bust because he's a OSU QB going to the Texans that have the worst WR group in the entire NFL 😂. The worst part is that they still believe Bryce is better because he beat the Texans on Stroud's worst game. On Bryce's best game he could only score 15 points
Texans will ruin it though. They don’t build teams and have zero culture. Stroud will carry but he won’t be able to mask the issues they have. If he’s smart he goes to a real franchise. Texans are just a pay day. But as a rook you gotta tough it out
The race is definitely over. 470yds and 5 TDs says so.
Race ain't over til he beats Bryce
@@jayjacobs2201he already as lol buddy is about to be rookie of the year and possibly mvp that’s checkmate. Y’all talking about panthers beating the Texans isn’t on stroud lol
@@jayjacobs2201lol. No one cares who won that game. The broncos beat the chiefs last week and no one thinks they are the better team. This is the nfl. Any given Sunday.
@@jayjacobs2201lol that's the only thing that helps yall feel good about the Bryce pick. Oh well, give Bryce the ROY over Stroud because he beat the Texans 😂
I'm at a point where I miss the days when we could be bad one season and be good the next and make the playoffs... seems like a lifetime ago the way things have gone smh. Appreciate that Tepper!! You really came through on your promise, because we're certainly not mediocre anymore... we're just bad...
Yeah, that begat the cardiac cats. I remember it through the Fox years, Rivera picked it up, and it was always good for the watercolor on Monday. Now it just sux.
😆 dude you're right on the money..
I don't blame Young, it is all on Tepper and his annoying AF wife Nicole. 😒
@@jairusbarringer7525Fitterer is responsible as well.
They first made the mistake not taking SAM HOWELL in the third round of the 2022 draft. In 2023 we could have taken Jalen Carter.
💯
I completely agree
Yes because Sam Howell has lit the world up. The most sacked QB other than Daniel Jones
No they made mistake on not drafting Fields with Cam gone and or passing on Michah Parsons with Luke Kuechly departed and instead drafting Jaycee Horn
@@adriankendrick428144+ sacks and dudes still alive, that's an achievement
He's 5'9 180 pounds. Only delusional football fans thought he was that guy. He's getting worse every game. 🤷♂️
We have plentiful of delusional fans wanted Bryce Young. 😂😂😂
Whats funny the ole guy I talk to said that guy is small he is going to get hurt in there why would they pick him and I looked at him and said you think so he is really swift on his feet and good pocket presence 🤷♂️ I guess he is proving me wrong
Honest I wanted stroud, we got young wasn’t too happy about but now I’m numb to this season & this team I’m pretty done for the season it is what it is at this point 😑
Doesn’t matter now. We’ll be bad for awhile because of this mistake
And many others.
Here’s the problem. It’s not the line, receivers, coaching. It’s the fact his skill set is so limited you can’t put together a good game plan like you did with Andy Dalton when he dropped 400 and the offense looked serviceable. Too small to stand in pocket, too slow to run RPO/Scramble, arm too weak to throw deep so no vertical game. His play processing isn’t what it’s supposed to be either. So the only option is short passes and he’s turning it over so that’s also not working. This primarily is on one guy
He needs Kyle Murray, speed.
I feel your pain, but I respectfully disagree. Football is a team sport. To say that bad O-line play has no effect on a rookie QB and then blame everything on the QB seems a little disingenuous and looks like taking the easy way out to me. I can and will just as easily blame the O-line for the majority of this team's woes. Case in point, during his Super Bowl run with the Eagles last season, Miles Sanders averaged 75 ypg and was a 1k+ yard rusher. He was supposed to come to Carolina and restore faith in the running game after we traded away CMC. However, behind our O-line ONE season later, he is currently averaging 28 ypg. 28! Against the Bears, he rushed for a whopping -5 yards! So, this only proves that he isn’t what we thought he was and needs a top-tier O-line to be effective, which was the knock on him before and during the trade. Meanwhile, D'Andre Swift for the Eagles, who is virtually the same height, build, and speed as Sanders, is averaging 68 ypg! Before Swift got to Philly, he was NOT this good. So, you can blame Bryce all day long, but until we get some better protection and some more weapons (Theilen has 42% of the teams receiving yards, so defenses don’t have to guess where he’s going to throw the ball), I don’t care if you find Cam Newton and run RPO’s all day, behind this O-line will continue to suck and lose games.
Hell yes tepper messed this one up Stroud was the pick
I think part of the problem with Bryce is how specialized the team has to be around him. He was playing with the best recruits/team built for his style of play. He is not gifted athleticall(compared to other QBs) and doesn’t have the height. Until panthers can cater towards that I think he will stay bad. And basically that means they have to completely change their offensive personal. Which I don’t think is possible. There is no reason young should have been the first pick let alone give up what they did to get him.
For a six-foot and-under quarterback to succeed in the NFL, he typically needs to have some uncommon ability to overcome the height/size issue. I never saw what Bryce Young did at an uncommon level that overcame his shortcomings.
lol is Bryce even better than will Levis?
No and that’s the scary part
Thank you Carolina for CJ
Sincerely Houston fanbase
Bryce Young will never be THAT. He doesn't have the physical tools to be THAT.
Our awesome front office thought CJ was bumb and picked the only QB to piss off the combine
Did they not watch OSU play Georgia? Stroud put on a heck of a show.
Texan fan here. Hang in there. Lots of myopia in being a sports fan. Patience is tough when your franchise is fresh off such an important draft. Nice show...like your clear headed thinking
Thank you for the honest opinion. Unfortunately, I don’t see Bryce ever being a good QB.
Hey now, he might be pretty good if you put him in the USFL!

What will y all do? If, Will Levis is a better quarterback than Bryce Young?
A quarterback y all could have drafted, and still have Moore, and still have a first round pick?
Wow.
It was so obvious to pick CJ Stroud. I said it from way before the draft, he was more NFL ready for in game situations. On paper, Young looks great but he always looked average under pressure in the pocket.
4:02 The coaches wanted the adult size QB. Tepper insisted on drafting Young
As a Houston fan I’ll say this. Stroud has more weapons and probably a better o line. But young doesn’t have the arm strength, poise, and moxie that cj has.
It’s weird because he had that it factor at Alabama now he looks like a scared mouse
CJ is making his weapons the “weapons”. Thats what a good QB does. “Don’t overhype the Texans supporting cast”. He himself said that in this video lol
I’m a Texans fan. Please stay out of other teams business
CJ is the ‘weapon’! He elevates everyone around him!

CJ has weapons that can get seperation, better protection, better coaching, better run game. & i can point to countless statistics that prove my point if you wanna argue with me. If Bryce still looks like this next yr then sure.... Talk that sh*t

Nico Collins only problem was he couldn't stay healthy. Hes a great deep threat.. Hes better than everyone but Thielen as well. Tank Dell another speedy wr. Even if he is a rookie. You could argue the run game is equal , but id consider singletary & pierce to be better than Hubbard & Sanders who was nothing more than a product of Philly anyways. The O line has unquestionably played better for Houston. Bryce has been sacked 8 more times despite playing 1 less game & their the 4th most penalized team on offense in the league. I wanted Stroud from the beginning because he seemed more NFL ready. Hope Bryce comes around 🙏
Same. Stroud showed by far the best mechanics from drop back to release, he was smooth and quick. That alone would have been the reason I take him 1st overall, without taking their physical characteristics into consideration.
“ Hope Bryce comes around.” --- He will…. once he has moved on to a more fitting league for him in the USFL!
The question you should be asking is if you could go back in time & redraft would you still pick Bryce Young. And if not then that tells you all you need to know !
Bryce Young is the new Zach Wilson. This isn't going to end well.
He's worse imo. As for physical ability/talent....Zack is superior lol
You’re right about flipping the QBS, CJ is all around way better. He’s smarter and has better decision making. If anything everyone was doubting us coming into the season. Panthers were more promising before and after the draft. But too bad so sad we’re a lot better because of CJ.
I was so annoyed on draft night. I was like what are you doing! 😮💨 CJ was the pick not the 5 10 guy!
“Did the Carolina Panthers draft the wrong quarterback with Bryce Young instead of CJ Stroud?” -- You think? It takes you that long to finally realizing it, huh? Duh!
Dont blame the coaches. David Tepper stepped in. Owners have the right to do that but it often doesnt work out😂
Stroud did his buddy a favor and in his belief is to give and you will be rewarded. He took a loss for his friend and was given History. Believe in your faith and he will reward you.

Seems like Tepper means well, but his football judgement has to be questioned after 5 years of failure.
Of course it should be. He thinks that because he was successful in one field, he's automatically good in every field. He has an over inflated since of himself. Running a successful NFL team is a lot different than running a hedge fund.
Texans OL runs circles around Carolina
This was on tepper and whatever rocket scientists in the front office telling him that they were one QB away from being a winning team for sure.
The fact you have to ask yourself this question already tells you.
I heard a statistic yesterday that got me. Frank Riech's last 4 games the team didn't get a single 1st down before getting canned last year. Why would we hire him? Fire Reich!!
Ask a GA fan, when Bryce was under pressure from them Dawgs he was not good.
Yep, and if that OSU reciever had not just fallen down the Buckeyes would have beaten UGA in that national semifinal game.
@@sidviscous5959that had nothing to with reciever that was bad 4th qtr coaching decision

The answer is of corse. CJ had an all time performance, it’s not like good for a rookie, it’s just good.
It will take a while for the gamecto slow down for Young. Stroud clearly makes those around him, better.
Didnt you guys beat Stroud last week?? Try not to get too caught in comparing yourselves to other. Just worry about how this team can get better..
Broncos beat the chiefs last week. No one cares. It happens lol. It’s hard not to look over and be upset . If they have up nothing to get Bryce young they could still be upset. But they gave up soooooo much to get him.
@calebhoffman6368 I've seen the tape on qb school on Young. The tape is good, it's just he has no help. This Him vs Georgia in the national championship a couple years ago when all his weapons were hurt in the rematch of the SEC championship
When he had his weapons he torched Georgia and their 30 future nfl draft prospects on D. In the title game, he struggled but still had moments. The concerning thing is the happy feet. Howell has been sacked 15 more times than Young and he does t have happy feet and it hasn't affected him.. Carolina needs weapons and some online improvements.

The trade up to draft Bryce will do lots of damages. I'm a Texans fan, but I hope Bryce do well and help the team. I feel bad for the dude

Glad I’m a Texans fan! Thanks Mr Tepper! Thanks Lovie!
He would be running for his life just like Bryce is they were switched.
Too little
Hopefully this will be the end of first-round quarterbacks under 6 ft tall because that's just ridiculous 💯
I think Bryce will come around but I dont think he'll ever be up to CJ's level.
I wanted my Texans to draft Stroud from the get go. Based strictly on CJs ball placement and Height. Bryce still might be a good QB. He's 8 games in to his career.
I think Bryce might be pretty good if he plays in the USFL! The NFL might be way over his head!
@@grandwonder5858He'd be 🔥 in the XFL like PJ Walker

Too early to evaluate on Young. Thats it and that's all.
All year long with this debate 😅 but in the end, it really comes down to one. qb is just better than the other an ppl cant except that
I don't think drafting Young was the problem per se. The issue is they gave up four premium draft picks and their best receiver just to get him and then saddled him with with a sub-par offensive line. Put that together and they have pretty much guaranteed his rookie year and probably next season will be a disaster. They've put him into a Tim Couch or David Carr situation.
Why do we even keep asking the question?
There are 3 ways to answer the questions....yes, yes and yes.
we moved that meter way up for one good drive so this should be interesting
It is what it is attitude is not the right attitude to have. Can quickly lose the fans
4:01-4:08, they didnt want bryce, they wanted cj stroud it was tepper who made that decision
Big difference in the players that the Panthers have vs the Texans. We had a legit #1 and traded him away. We replaced him with an end of career slot receiver that fell into #1 (not necessarily an X, just the highest target share). DJ Chark has never been THE guy, just a gadget. Miles Sanders got traded because he wasn't needed to win (we have Hubbard who was playing well BEFORE we got AND released D'Onta Foreman - another mistake). Spend the 2nd on Mingo and do idk what after we spent another pick on Marshall previously to do ? We got a new coach who was a complete bust with his last coaching opportunity.
The Texans at least looked capable in small chunks last year with their young RB and the returning WR. They added so many pieces to support through the draft, we didn't do that because we sold the farm. We're gonna be bad this year, I didn't expect that much else given how trash the line is to compile on the lack of weapons, small QB and bad play calling with no identity at the run game.
I wanted CJ but think these are 2 elite options, one just has a higher floor. CJ was more NFL ready and joined a team that was closer to competing. Not like it makes a huge difference but Bryce DID win their first head to head in the NFL, even if it was 13-15 lol I'm not panicking. 1 season doesn't show your future, less yet half of one.
Bryce will be fine after y'all get him better protection and a #1 WR.
Tepper wanted a college coach in Rhule: failure.
...wanted a college qb in Bryce: failure.
He just needs a new HC , linemen , WRs, TE, rb. Then you can evaluate him. But for now like Bryce says “it is what it is”
It’s a bad scheme for panthers how often are they trying to cover their weaknesses by trying move the pocket and rolling out
Yes they drafted the wrong guy.
that's my backup quarterback on your meter there pal
Im a Ohio state fan and laughed when you choose that Alabama qb 🤣
For once, probably ever, the Texans owner, McNair stepped in and forced the Texans to go after a qb this year instead of only drafting Will Anderson jr. at 2. If not for this the Texans probably would have tried to grab a qb in free agency and/or the 2024 draft.
So without McNair sticking his nose in to force a move the coaches weren't 100% down with, the Texans could have missed one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. (this is assuming of course he continues to either play at his current level or, god forbid, gets even better as he gains more experience.
Something to consider though is how many times ownership has done this in the past with Houston football teams and it has worked out positively almost never.
Tbf I’ve always liked the Texans receivers. And Nico Collins is in his 1st year as a pro. Noah Brown came in clutch a few times for Dak and I don’t like the Cowboys
I’ve been saying this all year this was perfect
Watch both CJ and the #1 pick next year win 10 super bowls
It’s so fucking hard to be a panthers fan us missing on cj is a big let down I wanted him from the jump to an now look what we did I’d give him to next year but gosh damn man if we still had dj moore an have up burns we probably be in a better spot this shit really makes me want to pick a different team 😂😂 but I can’t hopefully after his rookie year he starts balling out I guess will see we better get the best wr in free agent for Bryce an a better o line men
I mean the race is over for y’all at least for this year 💀
I knew this before the draft, but you just cant stop that sec hype train.
I'm a Texan fan. I think y'all are bailing too soon on Bryce. He looked great against us. Yes, we are very happy with Stroud, but, Bryce doesn't appear to be a scrub, from what I saw. Now, I can't speak to your coaching situation, GM, or ownership, that's a whole other situation. But Bryce could turn into something good.
We scored 15 points and Bryce was still unable to throw deep or do more than dink and dunk. You can’t win anything with a QB like that.
You’re right! Bryce might have a bright future in the USFL!

CJ Stroud make offense look better, just like in Ohio St CJ make Ohio St WRs look better.

The race is over. I know Hindsight is twenty-twenty but my gut feeling when both were coming out was CJ projected better to the NFL game. Bryce is built differently in terms of overall performance in college but CJ's entire arsenal is built for Sundays. The Panthers made a huge mistake passing on Stroud
