I first saw Ned's Atomic Dustin play Raleigh NC opening for Jesus Jones. I was 15 and didn't know who Ned's Atomic Dustbin was to be honest and they, well, changed my life. This was my first show, my sister was 16 and just old enough to drive. They blew my mind. I lived in a little town called Goldsboro, NC, and my only source of music was staying up late on Sunday nights for 120 Minutes. All the other girls were listening to New Kids when I loved the Clash and the Cure. Then I saw Ned's play... I have no idea how the world doesn't recognize them more than they do. Much love for you for doing this and much peace to all.
Awh wow, what a cool story! I've passed it on to Rat and he was delighted to read about your experience. Isn't music magical! Thanks for watching this and for saying hello.
I was the same age and in my freshman/sophomore years in highschool when I first 'discovered' Ned's. I'm not even sure how I did. What I do know is their second album 'Are you Normal' never left my Cassette Tape rotation in my Walkman/Car. Jesus the 90's were already so long ago. I've never been able to see them live, unfortunately I live half a world away.
Neds were a huge part of my teenage musical awakening in the mid 90s, one of the first bands I felt were "mine". I've been lucky enough to meet Jon and Dan a long time ago on separate occasions to tell them how important they are to me. To top it all off, just 2 days ago a friend of my wife who works with Dan and his wife managed to get him to sign a pair of drumsticks for me! Long live Neds Atomic Dustbin.
@@Penfriendrocks I actually already have One in a Thousand! Love the whole album but Next Summer is my jam. You have a fantastic voice and its so cool hearing Rat's guitar playing again.
My new favourite thing is guitarists who love their set up but also freely admit they don’t know what certain bits do or are for. They’re human! Who knew?! Everything sounds awesome. Super excited for the Obey Robots album! Currently tired and sore and yet music is an endless balm. ❤️
90's baby here, just discovered this band TODAY. And as a hardcore Nirvana, Soundgarden and Foo Fighters fan, after hearing Grey Cell Green, for me as a bassist who plays bass more like a guitarist I really appreciate how Alex Griffin plays in the higher register with more chords and melodies. Shit I play my bass through a 2011 Fender Mustang 1 guitar amp and my bass sounds wicked
Thanks for watching!! You should track the band down on Facebook, there's a lovely community of people on there sharing their memories on there - and of course they still play live. I made this video because Rat and I made an album together - Ned's is a totally separate thing to that of course.
I love this , Thx Penfriend . Rats one of my favs . And it's great to see is rig . I'm mainly an acoustic guitar guy and it's nice to see electric setup .
I discovered this video early this morning, I live in Los Angeles. I have watched this mini rig run down 5 times today! I am a big Ned’s Atomic Dustbin since 91, before Nirvana became huge! I bought all the singles and when bite became available I got that as well, everything up to brain, blood, volume. I always wanted to know what Rat was using for his guitars rig. I hope Obey Robots is available soon! Rat really carries the vibe still!
Hello Laura! I am jealous of your gear as well! Mmmmm Moog! I love synthesizes and Moog is definitely top notch. I really want to know from Rat is what guitars was he using in the Nothing is Cool/God Fodder era. His tone is incredible. Definitely amazing how you both sound together! I had taken time off from my musical endeavors and tried my hand at auto racing, when I heard Ned’s it got me playing again. I haven’t stopped! I look for to listening more of what you have on your channel, I got some catching up to do!
Yeah dude, I met these guys when they came stateside. They come from Black Pudding Land, or something like that, which is not far from Liverpool in Scotland. and boy oh boy could those guys drink - gallons & gallons (US of course ha ha) of tea, like it was never in fashion. Jjjjjjjeeeeeezzzzzzz! 🇺🇸by the grace o’ god.
I’m really looking forward to hearing the finished product, seen Neds back in the day over 10x, used to see Rat most Saturday nights at the Birmingham Hummingbird club too, hope this doesn’t offend but a Rat guitar sound, Pixies like timings with a bit of synth thrown in & of course Laura orchestrating it all, can only be a good thing… 🤔
So much fun, Laura! Rocking horses have to be therapeutic. Really educational on Rat's effects set-up too. I recognise the riffs from 'Kill Your Television' and 'Happy' to the degree that they might just as well have come out yesterday and not 30-32 years ago! It's great to see that Rat still plays them with so much energy.
It was so fun to be the only one in the audience for those riffs while making this video! Kill Your Television was the first Ned's song I heard, aged 16, and it's just so iconic.
@@Penfriendrocks Agreed, Laura! It was the first one of theirs I heard too. I was also 16, but I heard it when it hit the indie chart Top 10 in the summer of 1990 (being about seven years older than you!) I think it was beautifully subversive and challenging to the relatively passive cultural status quo at a time when nearly everyone in the UK still spent hours watching programmed TV output on the four terrestrial channels every day. And then there's the current of visceral frustration running through the whole song, and the solid indie musical values, perfect fodder for a teen and young adult audience that doesn't identify with the mainstream. Wasn't until 1992 that the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy reached the UK Top 50 with their rap anthem 'Television: the Drug of the Nation' - which has the challenging of TV culture in common with it, if nothing else!
