Finding space to be creative - whether that's a physical space, a time of day or just a mindset - is so powerful. In the first of a new video series, I discuss different ways of writing songs, and gaining confidence through home recording with Rat, guitarist from Ned's Atomic Dustbin and my duo Obey Robots!
The book Rat mentions is called "Guerrilla Home Recording" by Carl Coryat amzn.to/3Exmzq3
Rat also shows off his guitar collection:
Electrics: 2 x Gibson ES335 Studio Dot Reissue 1989, 2 x Aria Pro 2
Acoustics: Gretsch 5022CE, Yamaha CPX700

Gotta say Thanks to Laura , Miles , and Jon for getting Rat back into his creations ...
What an utter smile fest. Rat comes across as such a lovely guy. I totally get the point he made about Neds not writing filler songs. There is not one skippable track on all three albums. BTW Rat if you're reading this. Brainbloodvolume was Neds creative peak - in my top ten albums of the 90's - a criminally underrated album.
Totally agree about BBV - great album!
Yeah Neds LP's all are good from start to finish.
Absolutely agree about BBV. By the time it was released, I wasn't thinking about Ned's anymore, didn't even know they were still a band. I bought it mainly out of curiosity, and it absolutely stunned me. I listened to that album every day for awhile, which I hadn't even done with the previous ones. All these years later it's still a favorite that brings back fond memories.
Came across this by chance. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of Neds, but the fact that this is a video about creative spaces is fascinating, because I have one myself. I use it for my writing and music, and have to be honest here, it's worth paying the bedroom tax for (long story short, I had to move out of my private rented flat and because of the benefits I'm on, the council offered me a two bed). Whether my work is shared from the room is another matter, but when the black dog and it's friends come, just go to that room, pick up a guitar and just thrash.
Hi there! Ahhh I'm so glad you found my channel - and that you also get to enjoy the wonders of the home studio. I've prioritised an extra room in every place I've lived in since 2008 and it's been well worth the extra money. I'm delighted to hear it's working out for you too - and I agree sharing the stuff isn't necessarily the point. Happy thrashing, happy watching - and more in this series will be coming soon! Laura xo
It makes me really happy to see those Deathbox and Bones Brigade stickers!
I can totally relate to Rat on so many levels and have a similar story to tell. What a sound chap he is 👍🏼
The 11 year old me watching Neds destroy The Word on TV just lost his mind. That's RAT!!!! Man, I am so chuffed to see him playing again, he really was an inspiration for me to pick up an instrument and wear big boots (still doing so now). 🤣
This project sounds ace. Ordering the album now, and all the best to you all with this. 👍
Thank you!
Same here 🥴🐀🐀🐀
What a wonderful interview with a true gent. I can’t wait to get your new record from the postie. It’s been a very long time since I genuinely got excited about an album release.
Thank you, Ian!!
Found this video because there was a thread on the albums with the best guitar sounds. It reminded me that I always wondered how Rat got the sound that he did, so I asked Dr RUclips and found this clip
Thank you both for taking the time to do the interview and putting it up. The genuine joy and gratitude that Rat has at being able to be creative is inspiring
Thanks for watching, Jason! You’ll enjoy this one even more I think: ruclips.net/video/U42B5TAtaWw/видео.htmlsi=JS-zMOnEiF_ClcZx - and there’s more Obey Robots videos floating about here if you’d like to see him in action. Welcome to my channel!
What a lovely video. Thank you. Lovely to see Rat, who I've seen on stage quite a few times but never really heard speak before!
Thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Colin! You might enjoy this playlist then :) ruclips.net/p/PLjSzokSHVfQ1tZgJuC5iOTvHvQ4Qxueaa
Especially this one :) ruclips.net/video/l71w6rHs5tk/видео.htmlsi=jtHEzo9hRLb6UgYm
Thanks for visiting xo
Thank you Rat and Laura for this honest, intimate and very interesting interview and a fantastic album!
What a fantastic look behind the scenes
Peace from New York .. big fan of Ned's ! The classic black white striped guitar always reminds me of the Frankenstrat .(R.I.P. EVH🎸)
Hello over there! Thanks for stopping by :)
What a lovely chap! Thank you for sharing this! And well done Laura for encouraging and letting Rat shine!
Great video! I love Rat x
Thank you, and nice to see a 4x4 Rubiks cube sitting on your desk! 🙂
❤❤love Rat. Seen him in Neds in Toronto twice in the 90’s❤❤
I bet they were wonderful shows!
Such a nice fella. Looking forward to the album.
Can’t believe I’ve found this amazing content. Rat is a legend and a massive influence in my guitar progression. Brilliant stuff
Thanks for watching and for saying hello, Lee! Have you heard the album Rat and I released together earlier this year? Check out this playlist for more 🤖 ruclips.net/p/PLjSzokSHVfQ1tZgJuC5iOTvHvQ4Qxueaa xo
Amazing! I started learning Ableton in 2020 during lockdown. It's inspiring to see one of my idols from my teenage years have a music room that looks a lot like mine.
Excellent interview with a bigger insight to how things evolved on a few levels..
What a modest guy and a gent.....Great setup also.
Loving this collaboration. Excited to get the album.
Great vid. Really looking forward to the album popping through the letterbox, hopefully tomorrow, as loving what I’ve heard so far. All the very best to you both. Brilliant stuff 👌🏻
loved watching this...
Legend 🎸
Thanks for making One In A Thousand happen, it's a superb album, very moreish lol Any plans to tour? Would be brilliant to hear live! If you do, come to Glasgow please! lol
What a great interview and insight into Rat's journey. I had a similar quest back in the 90"es.. Using a double cassette and drum machine. A multi effects pedal from Boss and guitar and bass.. I started my DAW experience in 2008 and haven't looked back ever since.. Multiple albums and EP"s under our name "Vaylon".. But all synthpop now 😊
Very cool!
Love It!! 😍❤🔥😍
thoroughly enjoyed that!
What an inspiring video. I bought some gear to record with on the computer, but so far I've held off jumping into as it seems like an avalanche of learning. This make me feel like giving it a go. Great interview, nice guy. Some cool guitars too! Thanks
Yes, Gabriel! The book we mention in the video is really accessible if that sort of learning works for you, otherwise RUclips tutorials and Skillshare are fantastic too. Just do it!
@@Penfriendrocks Thanks for the uplifting words. I will make the leap of faith and enbrace the digital, and Obey robots!
a band with members that are prepared to listen to the other members is the basis for a good band I think but is so hard to achieve because creativity is so personal. interesting to hear you found studio one - I found that a few months ago after looking for something to do after decades not creating but feeling inspired by some great new albums. My last experience was with a borrowed tascam when I was a lot younger!
This was so much fun and super interesting to watch and listen to! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with writing and recording music!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Really interesting to see the processes involved.
Worth watching just to hear Rat play that snippet of Mad Jack by The Chameleons
Top points for confusing the hell out of me this morning, Matthew 😂
@@Penfriendrocks apologies lol. Just that little ukelele bit at the end was ace!
Top Marks for hearing that riff :)
@@Rat-vr9gp big fan of the Chameleons.
Loving your new album too. Been on repeat since Friday morning
Fantastic insight to the recording process. Looking forward to the Obey Robots ukulele EP now of course 😊
Now that's a great idea!
Great interview, I'm no musician and wouldn't know how to do any of that technical nonsense but my ears sort of help me to know a good tune or two. If Rat isn't aware of the ukulele orchestra of great Britain please introduce them to him on RUclips. Not only are they wonderful musicians but pretty hilarious too. Their repertoire spans from the theme from the good the bad and the ugly and the theme from Dick Barton special agent to the theme from Shaft, wuthering heights and anarchy in the u.k. Keep up the good work and stay happy, love, Neil.
I love them!!
loved this, congrats on the album!
Thank you!
Dear Laura! How are you guapa?? Cant wait to gey my cd , and an autograph please!! Hahah, my Daughther already has her own rock band, this far :,D , we are very thank full 2 u and Rat, our best wishes 4 ever , < 3 mucho love. Manuel ; )
Such a cool video !. Nice to get an insight. I've got the same Gretsch acoustic as Rat. Stunning guitar. He probably plays it a lot better than i do though !.
I'm of the opinion that we all play things how we play them, and it's all great :)
I have a black Yamaha electro-acoustic like that! I also hated acoustic guitars and mainly chose it because it was black if I’m totally honest - but I love it now.
Fantastic! I'm still waiting to find the right acoustic for me, I have a 3/4 Yamaha which is the closest I've come so far...
Mad Jack on the ukulele! That must be a first!
I need to look this song up!!
Rat! Been waiting for 30 plus years to know what gear you have and use, don’t feel bad just learning the recording software, I was using an Atari for the longest time, I had to relearn the same stuff because I switched to a PC, learning new gear never stops.
Thanks for watching, Don! Have you seen this earlier video where Rat talks through his guitar setup? ruclips.net/video/U42B5TAtaWw/видео.html
Master of masters ❤❤
Was that mad Jack??
Well spotted!
@@Penfriendrocks I love the Chameleons!
Please tell me that was Mad Jack, Chameleons, on the uke at the end!
Apparently! (what is that?!!)
@@Penfriendrocks A fantastic band from Manchester, 1980s. Mad Jack is the opening track from their 1986 release Strange Times. Check it out if you have time.
a big fan of American Werewolf in London are we Rat? Really interesting to watch and listen to. Been playing around myself a bit lately and really hope to get something together pretty soon, and being completely self taught - so I can relate to quite a bit of this.
