The pellet grate is to prevent you from getting your fingers amputated by the auger. Presumably while you are digging in there trying to scoop pellets for your smoke tubes.
Makes sense. If someone reached down that far they deserve to lose a finger
@@diyhvacguy LOL!
@@diyhvacguy Many don't know how they work or about an auger or what it even does. Most People are not mechanical. They may be clearing pellets (not smart) for some reason or not thinking. ???
It's also there to help prevent something like a tool, or accessory item from falling down in there and maybe jamming the auger.
If you pull the screws for the guard and put a dab of blue loctite on them, you can put them back in juuuuuuuust enough that you can pull the grate out easy without needing a screw driver so you can clean out the pellet box after the cook.
The loctite will keep the screws from backing out and ending up in the auger.
Considering the auger rotates at half the speed of smell, if you lose a finger there, it’s intentional.
Smart man. Great way to get some extra smoke. Yeah, mine doesn't make much smoke, so I am glad that you showed us this trick. I expected so much more smoke.
Just bought my Traeger and also bummed, thought it would be a lot more smoke and on initial start up it does have smoke.
Will definitely try this method but annoyed I have to now buy add ons.
Cheers for the tip.
Just found ur video. This is beyond great. I bought a Century 885 from Costco I’m so damn disappointed to say the least. I couldn’t believe that it doesn’t smoke. But as soon as I saw ur video I ordered some and will be using them for my thanksgiving turkey. Thanks again man.
Of course!! Smoked turkey for the win! Cheers
You da man! Not only do you solve my HVAC problems……you fix my traeger!
Appreciate the video bro-squatch. Thanks for sharing. Adjusted my chimney to different heights and didn’t notice much of a difference in the amount of smoke. May give these a try.
Right on brotha. I was told a flat one with a flap might work better. I’ve had good success with the pellet tubes though :)
Currently use one tube on my gas Weber - was trying to convince the wife that a $1k Traeger would solve for this, but sounds like 2+ tubes is the way to go. Thanks for the informative video. More folks need to see this prior to a hefty 'investment'
Pellet grills don't add a lot of smoke. This is why offset smokers are still a thing.
How long does the smoke tube burn?
Great video. I have a Traeger 780 and I try to have my food on during start up to get the most smoke flavor but I am now trying to get smoke all the way through the cooking process.
The grate in the pellet compartment is meant to disrupt the pellets as the fall into the auger. It prevents the pellets from making that cone shape and setting off the refill pellet alarm. Weight distribution is the basically what it's for.
Wow man great idea
Do you get acrid smoke? I like mine, but I’m curious what you think coming from a stick burner.
Zelda and Chill....nice. Also, solid solution to the occasional lack of smoke flavor in pellet smokers.
song of storms? That's so cool man!
Yesir 😎
Found your vid hunting around for a solution for the lack of smoke issue. It looks like this is going to have to be the route I go. It's really disappointing though. The 575 Pro I picked up had a price point approaching a grand. The smoke flavor it puts in the food is pretty minimal. Kind of nuts that for this much money, I've got to go out and by an aftermarket work-around to make my really expensive smoker, smoke.
Yeah, my bro said the same thing with his new pellet smoker. Bummer
Also depends on the pellets you are using as well. Using a quality pellet can make a big difference in smoke flavor.
I agree I bought my traeger from home depot last thanksgiving they were running a deal for $150 off plus they were throwing in a grill cover and the shelf that attaches to the front. I was so excited to finally get one, then was super confused at how lil smoke it produced even at temps under 220 which are the temps where smoke is supposed to be produced. It was so pathetic I thought I had to be doing something wrong but nope it just is called a smoker and hardly produces any smoke. So I took mine back to home depot 3 weeks after purchasing it and got a full refund. I have been debating getting the next level up that has the "super smoke" feature but something tells me that will be some nonsense as well.
@@Nick-xw3dk what pellets were you using. I just used my 780 yesterday to make ribs and the smoke flavor was very good.
@@danreed622 Hey Dan, I was using the hickory blend and the signature blend Traeger Pellets. I did multiple ribeyes on the grill and don't get me wrong it had a smokey flavor to the meat when I was done, but nowhere near what I was expecting from a Smoker. I just expected it to be a much more prominent flavor than it ended up being.
Ashes are a big issue with that type of smoke tube is that I found.
Awesome!!!
Any issues maintaining heat? As in it getting too hot, or does the Traeger do a good job of bringing it back down ?
It does perfect. The smoldering pellets don’t put off any heat, it’s never had an issue regulating the set temp.
Can you use real wood chips with this?
How long would those 4 tubes keep putting off smoke like that until they needed refilled? At least 8 hrs? I bought a pellet smoker thinking I could finally sleep while smoking only to find out they make almost no smoke on their own (at least compared to an offset wood smoker like I’m used to). I’ve been pretty disappointed so far, this looks promising if they last long enough.
Yea I typically run 4 of them at the same time and they produce a lot of smoke for about 6 hrs
I have a large wood/coal smoker. Thinking of getting a pellet smoker for the convenience, but everybody keeps telling me it's a mistake, because they don't bring a smoky flavor.
I had a friend who worked at traeger so I got mine for 65% off but if I payed full price I’d definitely do more shopping around. Some of the traegers have a super smoke feature and it cranks out a lot more but without these pellet tubes the level of smoke mine makes is sad lol
I bought mine on sale for $450. It’s okay, the smoke is present. But it’s nothing like real coal and wood. After a year one of the fans has gone out. So I’ll deal with that. But looking back, I should have just bought a offset smoker or kept using the old kettle two zone. Method.
Pit boss with a smoke tube and you will trash your stick burner ..it's so nice to set the temp and go to bed or work ..worry free
How much smoke do you need? Ive never felt the need for an extra smoke tube but you do you
Coming from a offset wood smoker to a traeger pro 780. I can agree with the man that we need more smoke. My ribs taste like that were baked in the oven
first thing I noticed was the Zelda music. haha! nice
Wow, you’re using 4?? How does it taste? I tried using 1 after watching this video and it puts out a ton of smoke. I’m experimenting with using hardwood chips or pellets.
Yea I wanted to get tooons of smoke so most times I’ll burn 4 at once
Yeah 4 seems excessive lol
@@dadude6619 Yeah, four seems like overkill. But, I can sure bet that he gets competition-level BBQ results. I'm envious ... I gotta say.
How long do these produce smoke?
For a pork butt I’ll usually refill them once. For chickens they will last the whole time. So I’d say probably 5-6 hours
Man you must like heavy smoke flavor. I use one and that’s plenty for me.
I just bought the pro 34... so disappointed. First of all they didn't even seal these things good, you have smoke coming out from all around the lid, no gasket or anything, chimney stays open so a lot of heat is lost, the temp probe is on the side where the heat comes up from but in the center of the grill where the brisket goes its like 30 to 50 degrees lower, I thought my meat proves were defective because it was reading ambient temp of 170 to 190 even though the traeger was set at 225 and the traeger Temp probe was ranging between 210 and 245, saw it die down to low 200s, I'm using the traeger pellets so can't blame it on that. If you want to smoke at 225 you need to set it to 275. I'm going to have to close the chimney some more and add rubber gaskets around the lid to see if that helps with the inconsistent Temps... brisket came out OK but nothing like my offset smoker... I wasted a whole 20lb bag and even ended up opening a 2nd bag because it took so long to get the brisket internal temp to 205... I didn't realize I was cooking it at 180 degrees or so it took like 23 hours or 24hrs... I'm so mad lol
Great tip - just bought 4.
My tube will not stay burning when I’m running my pellet grill? Am I doing something wrong?
You should use a torch and really lite it up and let it stay on fire for a couple minutes then blow it out and it will stay lit 👍🏼
@@diyhvacguy I am a construction work and have all the tools, I lit it with my soldering torch let it burn for 10 minutes to make sure it was lit blew it out and it t seems the fan doesn’t let it continue to burn. Where do you place it?
@@jimswanny1193 It works best on a burner where the rod stays hot. Heat the rod up to a good temperature where it can maintain enough heat. You can add shreds of fire starters throughout the rod to attempt to maintain that heat consistently through the burn
A-maze-n recommends to microwave the amount of pellets you need in 30 second increments. After each time, give them a stir and repeat 2 or 3 more times. This helps remove the moisture in the pellets. Then place in a tube or the tray, and light for at least 45 seconds with a small touch. Let burn for 10 minutes. Then blow out the flame. Works well. I've done it without doing the microvave part and mine would go out. A-maze-n manufactures pellet tubes and trays.
@@scoeat1 thank you I will try that
You shouldn't have to do this for a $700-1000 smoker.
You really shouldn’t but I’d rather improvise then get a new grill. Works for me! Another guy mentioned that I should get ride of the existing smoke stack cover and install a flat one that can be closed off partially to contain the smoke. I’m gonna try that!
@@diyhvacguy I get it, man. I like the suggestion of closing off the smoke stack partially. That actually might work.
You don't have to do this. You just need to get better pellets. Some of Traeger's pellets don't produce much flavor. The mesquite and hickory do decent, but the fruit ones are almost no flavor at all. Their specialty blends produce great flavor tho , IMHO. I've used the Meat Church and Brisket blends and both produce great flavor. Lumber Jack pellets also produce great flavor.
@@firebirdlover4460 , I have an actual smoker and then bought a Traeger a month ago. There is almost no smoke that comes out of the Traeger. That means it is efficient. But that also means there is not much smoke flavor. Traeger is a grill, not a smoker.
@@nakcrats1750 if you're not getting much smoke, you're doing wrong. I've owned a Traeger for 3 years. It produces a lot of smoke, just not as much as a stick burner. And yes I've used just about every type of grill out there. This isn't my first rodeo, by far.
Holy shit I only use one of those smoker tubes
Lose the smoke tubes. Use a smoke daddy heavy D instead (it doesn't work if you also use smoke tubes for some reason). Thank me later!
I discovered that this fall lol thanks for the tip though!
Can you adjust chimney height on the 780 Pro? Don’t remember reading anything in the manual about it. But I’m a newbie…
Why not make DIY smoke maker?
Lol not enough time in the day
@@diyhvacguy took me 30 minutes to make one but I know when busy time not easy.
Got to say, I’ve owned my Traeger for about 24 hours now have no issues with it smoking all of them matter of the settings that you put it under
Heck, I'll just keep my Natural Gas Weber grill and get some of those magic smoke doobie things. Pellet grills just don't do enough smoke from all I keep hearing.
That’s a thought! Haha
I find zero difference in taste....I've added tubes and had it smoking like crazy....Food taste like I cooked it in a regular kitchen oven. The smoke from pellets are useless to me.
I add actual wood chips in addition to the wood pellets, because you're right, the wood pellets aren't the best wood for smoking.
@@Flakester I haven't figured out a good way of doing that yet. What I tried didn't work. My wood chips smothered out pretty quickly.
@*Joseph* I've tried them all...Pellet combustion just doesn't do it for me.
Interested in more smoke on my Traeger and also interested in turning the fuel screw on my first gen cummins so it rolls coal. #smokecity
Buy a stick burning smoker at this point lol😂
lol right? So disappointed in this traeger lol
We have used our rectec for almost 4 years, after 30 or so years on an offset. I appreciate the ease and consistent temp. But, this is a smoker. This..smoke. Understand the is a point where there is too much or the wrong kind. However I am disappointed in the amount you get, without resorting to these tubes.
Why not just switch to smoke mode for an hour
The 870 pro doesn’t have the smoke mode
The most important question:
Does it affect the taste? How much difference does it make? You didn't answer that! Thanks
Oh it’s fantastic! Whoever invented this is a genius!
“…don’t even know what it’s for”. To keep your fingers from getting chewed-off in the anger, as you dig down and grab the pellets out of the hopper. 🤨
If you are reaching down that far you deserve to get your fingers chewed off lol
Auger turns so slow I don’t see it as an issue
I got a treager 790 and it's WHACK. I got better results from a $200 electric smoker from Lowes. Like WAY better results. I can't believe these things have such a good reputation.
Bought the ironwood 880 with super smoke for $1500, to replace a charcoal only grille I found on the side of the road which cooked endless ribs Picnics and briskets. No flavor what so ever from the Traeger.
Anyone that knows how to smoke knows thick white smoke is the worse thing you can do for flavor 🤦🏽♂️
I like how it tastes.. but to each his own 👍🏽
I don’t want thick smoke, I just want more smoke. I know they say the thin blue smoke is the best and it’s not really seen. But, if I don’t see any smoke and barely taste any smoke, then it needs more smoke.
Dude look at your smoke stack 🤣 lower it all the way down leave about a 8th of an inch or a quarter of an inch open
I never thought about replacing that with a sliding one… wasn’t sure if it would mess with how the wood burner functions.
I may try that! Thanks for sharing
PRO 34 500 Bucks little or no smoke at 250 degrees. 15 smoke tube problem solved, It is truly pathetic
Is this a joke?
Yes. I just put them in my smoker when no one is watching to see how much smoke they will make :)
Are you freaking serious? Apparently you do not know how to use a pellet grill, this has to be a joke
Well you didn’t lie when you created your username that’s for sure. 😂
3 year old traeger? How do you keep it that clean? I'm calling bs
